On today's episode, I talk to artist Jamie McKelvie. Born in London, Jamie came to prominence in the world of comics through his collaborations with Kieron Gillen. In 2003, the two started a comic strip in PlayStation Magazine that lasted for three years. This led to their book Phonogram in 2006, and its subsequent sequels, as well as Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. He's also illustrated stories and designed characters for Marvel on books like Cable, The Defenders, X-Men, Captain Marvel and Ms Marvel among others and created art for bands such as CHVRCHES, Art Brut and Tegan & Sara. Most recently, Jamie has been writing and drawing his own series One for Sorrow, which is being published by DSTLRY! Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. This week legendary X-Writer Kieron Gillen joins our host Lodro Rinzler for a very special episode entitled "The X-Office is an Anarchist Commune." We discuss, not surprisingly, what it was like behind the scenes during the recent Krakoa era, the Fall of X, and how Xavier was right (?). Kieron was born right as Thunderbird died so we dive into the epic story told in X-Men 94 + 95. Also in this episode: - Kieron has emotional contraceptives for that the overlap between Hickman and Gillen writing styles the X-Men are forged into...the Breakfast Club the death and rebirth of Thunderbird how Count Nefaria is somehow the primary x-villain this season on the show In the Q&A section we cover who the DJ was on Krakoa, how Selene loves to eat people and what the X-Men would be like as a sitcom. Also: Power Fantasy, Kieron's BRAND NEW comic, is out...TODAY! Go get it! Like, today today! Kieron Gillen first came to attention as a comic creator with his 2006's Phonogram, with Jamie McKelvie. Jamie and he formed into a gestalt monster that rampaged against the next fifteen years of comics, culminating with critical and smash hit the Wicked + the Divine. When not with Jamie, he has co-created books such as DIE, The Ludocrats, Once & Future, Three, Uber and more. When not making his own worlds, he has worked on Marvel Comics biggest books, such as Uncanny X-Men, Young Avengers, Thor, Iron Man, Star Wars, Eternals and Darth Vader, (where he co-created Doctor Aphra). You can follow along with Kieron's work by buying Power Fantasy TODAY(!) and signing up for his newsletter here. My guest today is an award-winning creator and writer of comic books. Born into a Staffordshire working-class family, he was a student of Applied Biology at Bath University when he started contributing to the prominent computer games magazine Amiga Power. Upon graduation, my guest joined the staff of PC Gamer, then left the magazine to go freelance in 2003. The following year he published a highly influential manifesto calling for a new mode of first-person, subjective writing about video games that he dubbed New Games Journalism. Two years later, he published his first comic book, Phonogram, which described music as a kind of transformational magic. After founding the PC gaming website Rock, Paper, Shotgun in 2007, my guest left journalism for good to work on comic books, including X-Men, Iron Man, and Star Wars, a series for which he also created the character, Doctor Aphra. He has continued to work on his own projects, including Wicked + the Divine, Once & Future and DIE, a horror series about tabletop role-playing games for which he received four of his six Hugo Award nominations. Album Spotlight - Swing Out Sister "It's Better To Travel" (Mercury 1987)

The Danny Diess Show

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 8, 2023 53:03

This month for the album spotlight Danny takes us to the year 1987 for the brilliant debut album "It's Better To Travel" by the Manchester England band Swing Out Sister.Although Swing Out Sister are currently a duo, they began as a trio in the UK. The group was formed by Andy Connell (keyboards) and Martin Jackson (drums); they were later joined by Corinne Drewery (vocals). According to the group's website, "They christened themselves after an obscure Billie Burke "B"-musical from the '40s [a 1945 movie starring Arthur Treacher, called Swing Out, Sister] because it was the only name they could agree upon - they all agreed they hated it." Both Connell and Jackson had been playing in other bands prior to forming SOS, while Drewery was a fashion designer and model before she became the band's lead vocalist. 52nd Street's Diane Charlemagne was influential in the period just prior to the band signing to Phonogram Records. Connell and Jackson, outside of their usual roles as Manchester musicians in A Certain Ratio and Magazine, were producing Electro tracks for Morgan Khan's Streetwise label with a degree of underground success. This activity triggered interest from a few major labels including Phonogram/Mercury Records. Vocalised songs were asked for, so Connell, who knew Charlemagne through Factory Records, approached her to sing on the Phonogram demos. These demos helped secure Connell and Jackson's major label contract. This was the period in which 52nd Street moved from Factory Records to Virgin Records and as a result, Diane Charlemagne's Swing Out Sister involvement ended. Beginnings and debut album: It's Better to Travel (1985–1987)Together with their producer, Paul Staveley O'Duffy, they signed with Mercury Records. Before their first album, they released the single "Blue Mood" in the UK in November 1985. However, it did not chart. In late 1986, the single "Breakout" was released. It reached the number four position on the UK Singles Chart in November 1986, and number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States in November 1987. When they released their debut album, It's Better to Travel, on 11 May 1987, it reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. The album blended real horns, synths (arranged subtly, to sound like strings), drums, and xylophones, scored by producer/arranger Richard Niles. The follow-up single to "Breakout" was "Surrender", which featured a trumpet solo performed by John Thirkell. It rose to number seven on the UK charts in January 1987. The next single was the more serious and jazzy "Twilight World". This song was the subject of many remixes and was a dance club favourite worldwide. The final single, "Fooled By a Smile", returned to the upbeat pop orientation characteristic of "Breakout".The group were subsequently nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1988: Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo ("Breakout").In addition to long-time partner O'Duffy as well as Thirkell, Swing Out Sister have also enlisted the talents of saxophonist Gary Barnacle (who with Thirkell also comprise the Phantom Horns known for their work with Level 42); percussionist Luis Jardim; guitarist Tim Cansfield; trumpet/fluegelhorn master Jerry Hey; and songwriter-arranger Jimmy Webb.Complete Setlist- 3/7/23BreakoutTwilight WorldAfter HoursBlue MoodSurrenderFooled By A SmileCommunionIt's Not EnoughIt's Better To TravelRecorded live at the She Shack Studio on March 7th 2023.© Copyright Danny Diess

On today's episode, I talk to Eisner Award-winning comics writer Kieron Gillen. Originally from Stafford in the West Midlands of England, Kieron began his writing career as a games journalist, writing for publications like PC Gamer UK, Wired, The Guardian among others. HIs early comics work included a comic strip with Jamie McKelvie, which started their long and celebrated working partnership that led to incredible comics like Phonogram, Young Avengers and The Wicked + The Divine. While Kieron's works are too numerous to name, some of his best knows comics include his Uncanny X-Men run, Die, Star Wars: Darth Vader, Star Wars: Doctor Aphra, Loki: Journey Into Mystery, and most currently Eternals, Immortal X-Men and the massive crossover Judgment Day! “For The Country” By the time Seth Tiven formed Dumptruck in 1983, he'd already had a few bands under his belt, including Saucers, a band he was in with fellow Connecticut pal Mark Mulcahy who would go on to form Miracle Legion. Tiven had relocated to Boston after graduating from Wesleyan and the supporting cast of Dumptruck had a few personnel changes, but changes aside. their first two albums D is For Dumptruck and Positively Dumptruck--both issued on Big Time--were two very strong entries to begin a career. Moody, dark and filled with jangle and melodic smarts, the band were lumped in with folks like R.E.M. and the Connells and rightfully so, as they were all kind of in the same sonic pocket. But it was 1987's For The Country, which featured new guitarist Kevin Salem who replaced singer/guitarist Kirk Swan, that really was their apotheosis. A stirring and angry collection that explored isolation and the geography of loneliness, For The Country bristled with confidence and indie rock grace. Tracks like Going Nowhere and Carefree demonstrated that Dumptruck were one of the most vital and stinging outfits out there. They played with the Replacements and Husker Du, had a growing fan base and were poised to take the next big step forward to the big time. And then the big time took that step forward and pushed it ten steps back. Not the big time, as in THE big time, but the big time as in Big Time Records. Dumptruck were crushing it but Big Time was getting crushed and were in tons of financial trouble. The label was free falling so the band's lawyer tried to sell their contract to Phonogram, Big Time got pissed and decided to sue Dumptruck for 5 million. This became a protracted legal battle and all the momentum Dumptuck had going for them was devoured. The resolution took years and a lot of money and in the end, Dumptruck prevailed. If you think most bands would have had a hard time recapturing the momentum that sidelined them after a thing like this went down, you would be right. And Dumptruck fell into that category. They never really found their swing again and broke up in 1991. Tracks they recorded during the legal battle were released as the Days of Fear album in '94, they put out Terminal in '98, Lemmings Travel to the Sea in 2001 and Wrecked in 2018. All great records, but it's hard not to think about what would have happened if Dumptruck had been allowed to maintain the momentum they'd managed. One never knows, but one thing I do know is that Seth Tiven is a truly nice guy and I'm so happy he answered the indie rock bat signal and came out for a chat. www.dumptruck-music.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of homophobia, gay panic, drag, queer representation, spying. This week we're taking on “Gay Paree” with a movie that's absolutely delightful, if just a tad dated. We've always been fans of Julie Andrews, but we've never seen her like this - tough, clever, sly and in drag. Couple that with a story that's not afraid to be loudly and proudly queer, and it's a wonder this did as well as it did. But when you look at the cast, and you look at the director, it starts to fall into place. This is really more of a romantic farce than a musical, but its songs are strong enough and the performances are delightful enough that they absolutely 1000% had to make this into a Broadway musical - and they did, with Julie Andrews. While it's not perfect by any stretch, to get this kind of questioning and care for gay and questioning characters in a mainstream farce is pretty amazing from 1982. As well as being the man responsible for Captain Marvel's current cool as anything suit, and, with his key writing partner Kieron Gillen, a string of brilliant comics series, Jamie was recently diagnosed with ADHD. I've long thought that OCD and ADHD were shitty bedfellows. Very different conditions, very similar consequences for a person's life – especially when diagnosed in adulthood. Here we have a conversation about how we're both trying to adapt, process and live with our respective diagnosis's.Want more?
