What am I trying to say? Stephen Semple: Well, I look at it this way. How is it not a brand? Dave Young: Oh, it's a brand. Stephen Semple: The moment I say Bond. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Shaken not stirred. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: We all know who it is. Dave Young: Evil geniuses. Stephen Semple: The first movie came out in 1962. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: And has generated billions and billions of dollars, both in a Hollywood, and spinoffs, and product placements. We all know about Aston Martin DB-whatevers because of Bond. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: To me, how is this not a brand? Dave Young: It's definitely a brand. I guess I'm thinking that most of what we've done have been consumer-facing products. Stephen Semple: Correct. Dave Young: Bond definitely is, in that selling seats to movies. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: For sure, that's consumer-focused. I'm with you. I'm all for talking about Bond. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: We just have to think differently, which I think like an evil genius. Stephen Semple: Well, the other part is it was the world's first blockbuster franchise. It's estimated that it's done seven billion in revenues. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Big, big, big, big, big, big bucks. Dave Young: We're always wondering, even when there's no Bond movie out, we're wondering who's the next Bond going to be? Stephen Semple: Who's the next Bond? Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: Who's the next Bond? Which is the controversy right now today. Dave Young: Sure. Stephen Semple: That we're going to come back and talk a little bit about. One of the funniest things though, when I was researching this, one of the funniest things is how Ian Fleming ... Ian Fleming created the Bond character and wrote the James Bond books, of which, what is it, the original dozen movies or so were all based upon the books. But here's the interesting thing, how he came up with the name James Bond. He's sitting writing, and he looks up at this book, The Birds of the West Indies because he's living in Jamaica, and it's written by James Bond. He goes, "That's a really cool name. That's what I'm going to name my spy." Dave Young: I like that, yeah. People that have single-syllable names always roll off the tongue. Stephen Semple: Yeah. I'm not going to go into a lot of the history. We're going to talk about it a little bit. I want to talk about something different, and it's going to seem weird. Because part of the reason why I believe James Bond, the Bond franchise and the Bond movies, have become so big and so successful is there's actually a degree of authenticity in all of them.

We all get shaken up in life from time to time, but how do we avoid getting derailed when it happens? We will find the answer by looking back at the early church. In Acts Chapter 4, we see that Peter and John face opposition from the Temple Leaders. They recognize that God is the ultimate judge, they speak of what they have seen and heard, and they get around other Jesus followers. By doing these things, they are able to handle the pressure of the situation and although they were shaken, they were not stirred. If we do the same, and we anchor our faith in Jesus, we too can weather the storms of life and can be a witness for Him.

John Morris Russell Talks Shaken Not Stirred Dan and Tom interview Maestro John Morris Russell (JMR) about his Chicago Symphony Orchestra concert, “Shaken Not Stirred,” musical scores, and James Bond music.  As you might have guessed, the concert's focus is the music of James Bond.   You may know JMR from his work as the conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra for the past 13 years.  Joining JMR in the concert is the amazing vocalist Capathia Jenkins. She possesses the wide vocal range needed to cover the various styles of singers from the James Bond catalog. We will be attending the concert and we're sure James Bond fans will enjoy this one.   In this episode, JMR talks about what to expect in this concert and how they put it together.  He also talks about his career, why he decided to conduct instead of play an instrument, some influential composers, and film scoring in general.  If you've ever wanted to know what a composer has to deal with in scoring a movie, JMR gives you a good idea.  It is really amazing how they do it. One other area we discuss is how technology has made composition more efficient.  Much is the same as it's been for hundreds of years.  But, some of it is streamlined today. Raymond Benson with an assist Dan and Tom wanted some expertise for this interview, so they asked Raymond Benson for an assist.  Of course, Raymond graciously agreed. Raymond helped us delve into other composers' works and JMR's experiences with them.  Plus, Raymond tells of a very scary experience he had with composer John Barry. What do you think? E não é para menos. O ensino é uma área que está hoje em grande mudança, impulsionada por um certo descontentamento com a escola tradicional e também pela revolução tecnológica. Entre os muitos projectos que têm surgido globalmente, há dois particularmente inovadores e que já chegaram a Portugal: a escola 42 e o TUMO. E ambos têm um denominador comum no nosso país: Pedro Santa-Clara, professor e empreendedor e o convidado do episódio de hoje. Em 2020, trouxe para Portugal a “42”, uma escola de programação muito peculiar, que surgiu em França em 2013 e já está hoje em mais de 25 países.  Mais recentemente, trouxe para Portugal outro modelo de aprendizagem inovador, o centro de tecnologias criativas “TUMO”, um projeto educativo gratuito e complementar ao ensino formal e visa capacitar os jovens para tirarem partido dos desafios e oportunidades da sociedade do futuro. Foi inaugurado há cerca de um mês, em Coimbra, o primeiro espaço TUMO da Península Ibérica.  Para além destes projectos, o Pedro é também fundador da Miles in the Sky, uma startup também focada em educação. Neste episódio, conversei com Pedro sobre a revolução em curso no ensino. Any time I have something with burley in it, i find that i have a lingering harshness in the back of my mouth/throat that stays for many hours. It doesn't seem to matter how cool i smoke, or if it's an aromatic vs non. The only consistent thing seems to be if burley is present. Many english blends don't leave me with this issue.
