Join Rolf Jacobson, Karoline Lewis, and Matt Skinner for another engaging episode of Sermon Brainwave as they dive deep into the lectionary texts for the 20th Sunday after Pentecost (October 26, 2025). In this thought-provoking discussion, the hosts wrestle with Luke's parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector, exploring the complexities that make this story both challenging and rewarding for preachers. Karoline shares insights from Amy-Jill Levine's interpretation, suggesting both characters might be caricatures - and potentially both justified. The conversation reveals how this parable resists easy categorization and challenges our assumptions about righteousness and mercy. The team also explores the connections between the other lectionary readings, including Jeremiah's communal lament, Psalm 84's beautiful imagery of God's dwelling place, Joel's prophetic vision of the Spirit being poured out on all flesh, and Paul's testament in 2 Timothy about fighting the good fight and finishing the race. Key themes discussed: * Prayer as revelation of our relationship with God * The danger of creating winners and losers in parables * God's mercy that frustrates our human conditions * The democratization of prophecy in Joel * Living faithfully in challenging times Commentaries for the Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost can be found on the Working Preacher website at https://www.workingpreacher.org/commentaries/revised-common-lectionary/ordinary-30-3/commentary-on-luke-189-14-6. * * * Don't forget to like, subscribe, and share to stay connected with more insightful lectionary discussions! Reminder: We have commentaries for the Revised Common Lectionary, the Narrative Lectionary, and Evangelio (Spanish-language Gospel). We're here for you, working preachers! In this message from Psalm 84, we are reminded of the deep joy and blessing found in the presence of the Lord. The psalmist declares, “Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere”—a truth that calls us to delight in worship and long for fellowship with God and His people.Together, we explore how the temple in Israel symbolized God's presence, and how today we experience that same presence through Christ, through prayer, and as we gather as His church. Even in seasons of weeping and difficulty, the Lord is our strength, our sun, and our shield. He withholds no good thing from those who walk uprightly and trust in Him.May this sermon encourage you not only to seek God privately, but also to joyfully gather with His people, finding strength, blessing, and joy in His presence.

Welcome to Day 2707 of Wisdom-Trek. Thank you for joining me. This is Guthrie Chamberlain, Your Guide to Wisdom Day 2707 – Wisdom Nuggets – Psalm 84:1-12– Daily Wisdom Wisdom-Trek Podcast Script - Day 2707 Welcome to Wisdom-Trek with Gramps! I am Guthrie Chamberlain, and we are on Day 2707 of our Trek. The Purpose of Wisdom-Trek is to create a legacy of wisdom, to seek out discernment and insights, and to boldly grow where few have chosen to grow before. Today's Wisdom Nugget is titled: A Thirst for Your Presence – The Pilgrim's Joyful Journey - A Trek Through Psalm 84:1-12 Guthrie Chamberlain: Welcome to Wisdom-Trek, your compass for navigating the profound landscapes of faith and life. I'm your guide, Guthrie Chamberlain, and today, we begin a new and deeply moving journey, a beautiful pilgrimage through Psalm 84 in the New Living Translation, encompassing its entirety, verses 1 through 12. Psalm 84 is one of the most beloved psalms in the Psalter. It is attributed to the Korahites, a family of Levites who were gatekeepers and musicians in the Temple. It is a psalm of pilgrimage, a song of ascent, meant to be sung by those making their way up to Jerusalem for one of the three major annual festivals—Passover, Pentecost, or the Feast of Tabernacles. This psalm is a beautiful and welcome contrast to the communal laments we've recently explored. After the national despair of Psalm 79 and the urgent pleas for restoration in Psalm 80, Psalm 84 bursts forth with a joyous and profound yearning for God's presence. It shifts our focus from the desolation of a city to the spiritual longing of a soul, reminding us that even in times of national turmoil, the faithful heart finds its ultimate desire in God Himself and in the joy of drawing near to Him. This psalm is a timeless ode to the incomparable value of God's dwelling place and the blessings that flow from His presence. So, let's join the psalmist on this pilgrimage, feeling the heart of a traveler yearning for home, a home found only in the presence of God. The Soul's Deep Thirst for God (Reads Psalm 84:1-4 NLT) How lovely is your Tabernacle, O Lord of Heaven's Armies. My soul longs, yes, faints with longing for your courts. My heart and body cry out for the living God. Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds a nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven's Armies, my King and my God! What joy for those who can live in your house, always singing your praises. Interlude Guthrie Chamberlain: The psalm begins with an exclamation of pure admiration for God's dwelling place: "How lovely is your Tabernacle, O Lord of Heaven's Armies." "Tabernacle" here refers to God's sanctuary, the Temple in Jerusalem. "Lovely" (yādîd) implies something dear, beloved, and full of affection. The psalmist is expressing a deep, heartfelt love for this physical space, not for the building itself, but for what it represents—the tangible presence of God. The title "Lord of Heaven's Armies" (Yahweh Sabaoth), used three times in this psalm, is significant. It reminds us that this beloved...

Pastor Marty Mandak preaches through Psalm 84.
Psalm 84 invites us into a holy longing—a deep desire to be near God and dwell in His presence. In a world full of distractions and quick fixes, this psalm teaches us that true fulfillment isn't found in what we achieve, but in whom we pursue. Learning the art of yearning means shaping our hearts to crave God above all else—turning our restlessness into worship, our waiting into hope, and our journey into joy. The post Psalm 84 appeared first on Pine Lake Covenant Church.
In Psalm 84 we see our deep longing for God's presence, the journey of faith through trials, and the hope of our true home with Him. This week Pastor Mike explores how God meets us in our yearning, sustains us on the way, and calls us to live in His blessing.

This week Pastor Jonathan invites us to desire the presence of God above all else as we pray through Psalm 84.
Pastor Rodney opened our Summer Songs collection of talks by reminding us that true joy isn't rooted in circumstances, success, or comfort—it's found in the presence of God. Drawing from Psalm 84, he showed how joy grows when we deeply desire God, dwell in His presence with others, and delight in trusting Him. Even in sorrow or struggle, God's presence brings strength, refreshment, and lasting joy that the world can't give—or take away. Listen and be challenged. Support the show

Now that the account of King David has essentially come to a close, the author recording the account looks back on David's life to record some of the events that happened during David's lifetime that were not included in the chronological story line. These accounts include the execution of members of Saul's family, battles against the giant descendants of Goliath, a song of David, the exploits of David's best warriors, and the census that David ordered to survey his kingdom. While imperfect, David is sensitive to his sin to the end, seeking repentance when he realizes his error.2 Samuel 21 – 1:14 . 2 Samuel 22 – 7:16 . 2 Samuel 23 – 13:53 . 2 Samuel 24 – 21:18 .
