You have to humbly accept Jesus' care over your life as he washes your feet. If you don't, Jesus says, you're going to miss him. You're not going to get Him. You won't understand what he's all about. There's a difference between union and communion. Peter and the twelve were united with Christ—they were one with Christ. But just like you and me, their feet got dirty because they walked in a world that is fallen and broken and dirty. Journeying through this life takes a toll on us, and our souls need to be drawn in over and over again to our life with Him. We need to be realigned, renewed, refreshed. We need to be washed. We need to come into communion with him again. So Jesus insists on cleaning our feet. When he cleans our feet, he's reminding us of who we are in him. You are his daughter. You are his son. You are one with Him. Jesus insists on caring for us throughout our lives, washing our feet, reminding us of the intimate care and grace that's offered to us each and every day. It's a humbling thing for someone to wash our feet, but our souls are in need of the humbling reality of Christ serving us. Our pride, like Peter's, wants to rise up and demand otherwise—“you'll never wash my feet,” says Peter. The flesh, our pride, always refuses. But the presence of Christ humbles us and teaches us in this moment. He teaches us who we are and what we are to become. We are chosen. We are in Him. We have union with God and we are to participate with him as servants of God. There is union, and there is communion. Our union has been forged through the life, death, resurrection of Christ—Christ alone. Our communion is where we participate with him in who we now have become and join in on what he is now doing today. He continues to wash us, even through this Word, through what we're doing here right now. You may not have noticed this, but while we were hearing the Word today, something else was happening, if you will. Christ was serving you, washing your feet. Ephesians 5 says, we are washed by the cleansing of the Word. He's washing our feet as we listen to and respond to His Word each day. Jesus says to you what he said to Peter: those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet—their whole body is clean. The water of God's Word washing our feet is going to be a part of our life together from here on out. Don't let your pride and flesh stand in the way of Christ serving you. And maybe next time, when you come to the Word, envision Jesus, the Creator of all things, washing your feet. Let it be a reminder to you that you are one with him, and that we need him to renew, to restore, to clean us—and that we are loved. And let that love move beyond you into the world to others, so that you can love the way he loved and served you. That's the prayer that I have for my own soul. That's the prayer that I have for my family, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose  through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen.   Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Dirty feet, ugly toes! This weekend Pastor Joaquin Pardo concluded our SUNDAY BEST series with a message about serving one another. John 13:5Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. In the final hours before His death, Jesus chose to spend His remaining moments humbly serving His disciples, kneeling to wash their feet.1) Greatness is spelled S.E.R.V.I.C.E.The Gospel of Luke gives us a glimpse into the conversations happening at the Last Supper.Luke 22:24A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest.In a moment when Jesus deserved all the attention, all the support, and all the love, His response was unexpected. Instead of demanding to be served, He said, in essence, “Let me show you what true greatness looks like.” And then He showed them—it looks like love.2) Service is spelled S.A.C.R.I.F.I.C.E.Jesus sacrificed and served even those who would betray Him. True service means laying down our bitterness, offense, and idols—the things that consume our hearts and blind us to others' needs. Instead of asking, “What have they done for me?” We follow Jesus by asking, “What can I do for them now?” Sacrifice is giving up what holds us back so we can serve with love.3) Sacrifice is spelled L.O.V.E.Jesus washing His disciples' feet was more than an act of service; it was a powerful picture of the sacrifice He was about to make on the cross. He took on our dirt, shame, and sin to make us clean and free. We sacrifice because we love. As He loved us first, we are called to love others through sacrifice.

Before the Passover celebration, Jesus knew that his hour had come to leave this world and return to his Father. He had loved his disciples during his ministry on earth, and now he loved them to the very end. It was time for supper, and the devil had already prompted Judas, son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples' feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.  John 13:1–5 (NLT) Jesus showed his love to the END  because there is no END to his love. MAKE AN IMPACT We are called to be spiritual CONTRIBUTORS,  not spiritual CONSUMERS.  SEE a need MEET a need. BOTTOM LINE:  It's IMPOSSIBLE to love Jesus and not SERVE people. THE CHALLENGE:  Meet a NEED this week.

 We don't always connect the act of surrender to presence of love. But there is a story in John 13, that we call "The Washing of the Disciple's Feet" that is really the story of the love-burst of Christ. Do you realize that when Jesus is serving us, serving others, when he surrenders, it's just the over-flow of a love-burst?John 13 contains a story from the day before the cross. In a day Jesus will hang on a cross...big sacrifice...world changing event...split time into two ages...but in this moment, he reminds us that the full extent of his love extends to even the most menial acts of service. Sure his love goes as high and wide as the cross...but it also goes as low as my dirty feet. His love is so unbounded that it will even surrender.

When Jesus washed his disciples' feet, it was an uncomfortable reminder of what it looks like to follow him--humility, service, and loving those who may not love you back.
