Buddy Trinidad is the guitarist of the Filipino punk rock band, The Betrayed. They were active during the early 80's and were part of a small but passionate punk rock scene in Manila. This era bridged the original Pinoy Rock era of the 1970's heading towards the new decade and subsequent local rock scenes that followed. We talk about how the underground scene of that time and how punk rock was imported to the Philippines. He also talks about meeting all his punk rock heroes when he was a successful pastry chef. Wally Chamsay was the Managing Director of Sony Music Philippines during the mid-90's to the 00's. He was responsible for signing Wolfgang, Razorback, Barbie's Cradle, South Border and Greyhoundz. He was also responsible for giving WG total artistic control to produce the “Semenelin” album. He and Sony Music developed a marketing strategy to successfully promote the band to the whole country and beyond that had never been seen before or since. Nides Aranzamendez was the drummer of Juan Dela Cruz on the Super Session live album that came out in 1974. An unsung hero who was one of the best drummers of the 1970's Pinoy Rock era. He was a huge musical influence on myself along with the rest of the Wolfgang/Razorback crew in our early underground days. Listen to the intro of the song, "Kagatan", and the drumming on "Sarap Ng Buhay" on Super Session and you'll know. Now living in the east coast United States, we talk about his journey involving the early origins of Juan Dela Cruz and lifelong friendships with those stalwart musicians. Bo Razon is a multi-instrumentalist who formed the Filipino afro-Cuban group called Puro Ritmo in the mid-90's. He also happens to be the actual first guitarist of Juan Dela Cruz. We talk about latin music and his early jam days with the young Pinoy rock heroes and his musical life during the 70's and 80's in the US. Aside from his memories of the 1970 Antipolo Music Festival, he also narrates how he watched Led Zeppelin opening for The Who in 1969. Raymond Red is an award-winning, independent film director. He has directed critically-acclaimed independent Filipino films such as “Bayani”, “Sakay”, “Kamera Obskura” and “Himpapawid” (which was released in the US in 2009). He also directed the music video for Wolfgang's song, “Meckam” in 2001. Red has also earned the distinction of being one of the first Filipinos to receive a Rotterdam Hubert Bals Memorial grant, one of only two Filipino filmmakers mentioned in the Oxford History of World Cinema, and the first and so far only Filipino to have won the prestigious Palme d'Or award at the 2000 Cannes Film Festival for his short film "Anino". We talk about our favorite films and why “Citizen Kane” is arguably the best film ever made. June Millington was the lead vocalist and lead guitarist of Fanny. Fanny is the first all-female rock band in the US to record major label albums. They were led by Filipino sisters, June and Jean Millington who emigrated to Northern California in the early 1960's. Fanny went on to record four albums in the early to mid 70's. David Bowie and John Lennon were friends and fans and bands like The Runaways, The Go-Go's and the Bangles all sight Fanny as an influence and inspiration. Bob Magoo and The Gaucho aka Big Jim were part of the DJ crew of Manila radio station DZRJ. The one and only rock station in the Philippines during the Martial Law era. Back when radio DJs had actual personalities and specific music tastes that you waited to listen to. We discuss the wild and fun times they had during their stints at the station, how they stayed up to date with American rock music during the 70's and how Bob Magoo was actually on-air when Martial Law was declared in the Philippines in 1972. He has starred in various local productions of major plays and musicals in the 1970's and 80's such as West Side Story, Pippin, Amadeus, The Fantastiks. He has also played the lead role of the original Philippines production of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat for ten years. He has become a stalwart of young talent in the Philippines by founding Trumpets Productions. He is presently the Entertainment Director of Solaire Resort in Manila and continues to perform as a professional singer. He also happens to be my uncle; my fathers younger brother. We discuss his beginnings in high school as a theater performer, my images and memories of him as I was growing up, the various stages of his career and what the future holds after the Covid era.
