Contrary to popular belief, when Oscar season ends, good movie season begins. The 3-4 month window after the Oscars and before summer movie season is when 90% of the year's best movies get released. Today on the podcast, we look back on the wide variety of excellent international movies that have directly followed the Oscars in this window in past years. We explain some of the attributes that define these films, which are diverse demographically (e.g., women, LGBTQ+, Indigenous), as well as in content and form. We discover that it's a challenge to package these films into neat categories for listeners because what makes these films so interesting is that they don't fit neatly into pre-defined genres and categories. E.g., they're period pieces aren't conventional period pieces. They're quiet, contemplative films that may be ambitious but low-budget.  --- To join the Radical Adaptations movie group in which we will watch Fabian: Going to the Dogs an read the book on which it's based, sign up for an invitation at http://seventh-row.com/radicaladaptations To join Reel Ruminators: A Movie-of-the-Month Enrichment Experience in March, get on the waitlist at http://email.seventh-row.com/reelruminators .  -- Stay updated on the US distribution status of festival films at C.J.

Welcome to It's A Wonderful Podcast!! Moving back into Europe this this instalment of the World Cinema series as Morgan and Jeannine travel to Sweden and take a look at perhaps the best known movie from one of world cinema's true heavyweights as they take a look at Ingmar Bergman's death obsessed, yet really rather humorous and therapeutic THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957) starring Max Von Sydow! A movie with such famous imagery it has been parodied many times, it features the definitive movie depiction of Death and is the perfect example of why the "intimidation factor" of these movies in this series really shouldn't exist! A very special Fanbase Feature! At San Diego Comic-Con 2023, Fanbase Press Editor-in-Chief Barbra Dillon moderated the “Bridging the Digital Gap Between Libraries and Comics Publishers” panel (originally recorded on Thursday, July 20, 2023) during which Matthew Noe (librarian, Harvard Medical School), Tina Lerno (comics librarian), Moni Barrette (director of Collection Development & Publisher Relations, Library Pass), Dr. Theresa Rojas (founding director, The Latinx Comic Arts Expo), and Dr. Katlin Marisol Sweeney-Romero (assistant professor, World Cinema and Digital Media Studies) participated in a thoughtful conversation about the barriers that exist for libraries to access digital comics, and how emerging digital platforms and coordination with comic book publishers can provide greater access for readers across the country, especially in the face of increasing calls for censorship.

It's a brand new era for Blank Check - Griffin is in his “arriving early to work” era. Ben is in his “Bad Boy 2.0” era. And we're all in our WORLD CINEMA era as we kick off our series on South Korean master (and March Madness champion!) Park Chan-Wook. Join us as we offer a brief overview of the evolution of Korean cinema - from 1960's landmark THE HOUSEMAID up through decades of government censorship - and introduce the career of one of our finest filmmakers. However - we're gonna be real with you all. Park's first two movies are NOT GOOD. He has actively tried to erase them from the cultural consciousness. So - do things get really silly as we dance around talking about how bad these movies are? YES. Do we use this episode as an excuse to catch up with several series worth of Ben Nicknames? ABSOLUTELY. Beast of Burden: Robert Bresson's Au Hasard Balthazar - WatchThis W/RickRamos  This week finds Mr. Chavez and myself continuing our dive into films with great reputations and few viewings. Bresson's 1966 French Classic, Au Hasard Balthazar, looks at life through the eyes of a donkey as it moves through the world being loved, abused, championed, worked, and - finally - sacrificed. A touching and beautifully story about humanity told in a profoundly emotional manner. As Mr. Chavez says, "I challenge someone to watch this movie and to be like, 'Well It's just about a f****** stupid donkey.'" There's so much more to unwrap, and for true fans of Cinema (and World Cinema in particular), Bresson's story is about the struggle found in purpose, love, and suffering. This is a truly beautiful film that has found legions of fans since its release over sixty years ago. We are proud to present Au Hasard Balthazar on this week's episode. Questions, Comments, Complaints, & Suggestions can be directed to gondoramos@yahoo.com. Many & Continued Thanks.
