This key figure in the Iranian New Wave, one of only four filmmakers ever awarded the top prize at each of the three biggest European film festivals, reflects on his cinematic critiques of Iranian society, continuing to work even after being jailed by the regime and then banned from making films under the threat of being sent back to jail, and how his own experience with a prison interrogator partially inspired his latest film, which won Cannes' Palme d'Or in May and was just chosen as France's entry for the best international feature Oscar race.

Telluride is also full of Cannes winner carryovers and we expect to see Jafar Panahi's Palme d'Or winner It Was Just an Accident, Joachim Trier's Sentimental Value (Grand Prize winner) and Kleber Mendonça Filho's double winner The Secret Agent (Best Director, Best Actor Wagner Moura) -- all NEON films -- in the lineup. Neon couldn't burn any brighter than it is now. The film production and distribution company acquired the rights to six consecutive Palme d'Or winners at the Cannes Film Festival: Parasite (2019), Titane (2021), Triangle of Sadness (2022), Anatomy of a Fall (2023), Anora (2024), and It Was Just an Accident (2025). Parasite was the first foreign language film to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards in 2020. Longlegs became the highest-grossing independent film in 2024. Director Sean Baker won 4 Oscars for his film Anora tying with the one and only Walt Disney for most Oscar wins in a single night. All of this from a studio that's only been around for 8 years. Film industry veteran Tom Quinn cofounded Neon in 2017 and has marked a distinct lane for himself in a crowded and, let's be honest, less-than-innovative industry. In this episode of Creative Control, Quinn traces his journey from actor to executive and explains how he's positioned Neon to be the "anti-algorithm" in a streaming world. He also gives his perspective on what's holding the wider film industry back and what Neon needs now to make their success sustainable. This week on Horror Hour with the Hanna's, we dive into the bold, bizarre, and unapologetically visceral world of Titane (2021), the Palme d'Or–winning shocker from director Julia Ducournau. Part body horror, part family drama, and part gender-blurring fever dream, Titane follows a woman with a titanium plate in her skull, a history of violence, and a concerning attraction to cars. We explore how Titane challenges expectations at every turn—flipping between brutal violence, tender intimacy, and surreal metaphors for grief, identity, and transformation. Is it a transhumanist masterpiece? A grotesque provocation? Or both? We also dissect Agathe Rousselle's fearless performance and Vincent Lindon's haunting vulnerability in one of the most emotionally complex horror films of the decade. Strap in, steel yourself, and prepare to question everything you think a horror movie can be—this one doesn't ask for your comfort, only your full attention. // Coverphoto by Blackforest Collective
This Pride Month edition of Sitting in the Dark shines a lavender light on the long-standing but often invisible relationship between horror cinema and queer identity. Host Kynan Dias traces horror's appeal to outsiders—particularly LGBTQ+ viewers—who find coded representation in monsters, victims, and the margins of genre storytelling. The episode dives deep into three genre-defining films. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)James Whale's campy sequel is reevaluated as a foundational queer text. The panel explores how Whale, an out gay director, infused the film with coded themes of same-sex companionship, rejection, and theatricality. From Dr. Pretorius's foppish villainy to the Bride's brief, iconic scream, the film is bursting with subtext—much of it retroactively interpreted through the lens of queer longing and societal othering. The group also riffs on Whale's tonal whiplash, Elsa Lanchester's cultural impact, and why “We belong dead” might be the most tragic queer line in horror history.A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)Often derided as a messy sequel, this film is now embraced by many as a camp classic of queer horror. The conversation covers the now-notorious creative denials around its subtext, the dynamic between actor Mark Patton and the filmmakers, and the striking presence of a “final boy” whose journey blurs lines between possession, repression, and queer awakening. The film's overt homoeroticism—locker rooms, leather bars, and sweaty dance sequences—is discussed not just for laughs, but as meaningful queer coding in the Reagan-era horror landscape. The panel also reckons with Freddy as a metaphor for internalized shame, and what it means when a horror film can't quite let its subtext become text.Titane (2021)Winner of the Palme d'Or and easily the most divisive film of the trio, Titane pushes the panel into complex conversations about gender fluidity, body horror, and the relationship between performance and identity. Is this a trans allegory? A critique of binaries? Or just a deeply weird tale of trauma and transformation? The hosts wrestle with the film's ambiguity, discussing its uncompromising visuals, unexpectedly tender surrogate father-son relationship, and what it means to build a chosen family amidst radical bodily change. Some saw it as alienating; others, transcendent. All agreed: this one will be analyzed for decades. This episode doesn't wrap everything up with a rainbow bow—and that's the point. Horror isn't tidy, and queerness rarely comes with clean lines or clear labels. But if you've ever felt like the monster, the final someone, or the person who's just a little too into the firetruck, this conversation might feel like coming home. Or at least like sitting in the dark with people who see what you see.Film SundriesThe List on LetterboxdWatch the movies discussed:The Bride of Frankenstien: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdA Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdTitane: Apple • Amazon • Letterboxd (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (07:05) - Coded Queer Horror (10:03) - Dealing with the Morality Police (16:21) - Bride of Frankenstein (35:14) - A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (53:55) - Titane (01:21:46) - Coming Attractions: The Drac Pack Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Mike is joined by Robert Bellissimo and Philip Marinello to explore O Pagador de Promessas (1962), the landmark Brazilian drama from director Anselmo Duarte. Also known internationally as The Given Word, the film adapts Dias Gomes's acclaimed stage play into a sharp critique of institutional power. The story centers on Zé do Burro, a simple farmer who treks over 20 miles into Salvador while bearing a heavy cross—honoring a vow to Saint Barbara after his donkey, Nicholas, falls ill. What begins as a devout act of gratitude becomes a battleground of bureaucracy, media exploitation, and religious gatekeeping. Winner of the Palme d'Or at Cannes, Duarte's film remains a bold and timely meditation on class, faith, and the politics of devotion.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.
It's been more than 25 years since the Swedish hardcore punk band Refused released their seminal album, “The Shape of Punk to Come.” Their most famous song from that album, “New Noise,” has been called a political anthem and a protest song. It's been used in the Palme d'Or'-winning film “Triangle of Sadness” as well as in the hit show “The Bear.” Last year, frontman Dennis Lyxzén of Refused joined Tom Power to tell us how “New Noise” became a global hit after the band had already called it quits.

Hang onto your slipcases because Blake Howard & Isaac Feldberg will discuss the canonisation of Sean Baker with the special CRITERION COLLECTION releases of ANORA and PRINCE OF THE CITY.AnoraContemporary cinema's foremost chronicler of American dreamers and schemers hustling on the margins of capitalist promise, Sean Baker, reaches new heights of mastery with this audacious anti–Cinderella story—a whirlwind neorealist screwball comedy with an aching heart. In an electric, star-is-born performance, Mikey Madison soars as Anora, an enterprising, ferociously foulmouthed Brooklyn erotic dancer and sex worker whose Prince Not-So-Charming comes along in the form of a Russian oligarch's wild-child son (Mark Eydelshteyn). This is the beginning of a fractured fairy tale—also featuring standout performances from Karren Karagulian, Yura Borisov, and Vache Tovmasyan—that turns the cruel realities of class inside out. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, Anora confirms Baker as one of our preeminent auteurs.DIRECTOR-APPROVED 4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital master, supervised by director Sean Baker and producer Alex Coco, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackOne 4K UHD disc of the film presented in HDR and two Blu-rays with the film and special featuresTwo audio commentaries: one featuring Baker, Coco, producer Samantha Quan, and cinematographer Drew Daniels, and the other featuring Baker and actors Yura Borisov, Mark Eydelshteyn, Karren Karagulian, Mikey Madison, and Vache TovmasyanNew making-of documentaryNew interviews with Baker and MadisonCannes Film Festival press conferenceQ&A with Madison and actor-stripper Lindsey NormingtonDeleted scenesAudition footageTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing and English descriptive audioPLUS: Essays by film critic Dennis Lim and author Kier-La JanisseNew cover by Bianca Parkes and GrandSon, with photography by Max AbadianPrince of BroadwayA raw, disarmingly moving slice of neorealism, this early-career triumph from DIY auteur Sean Baker plunges into the world of West African immigrant Lucky (Prince Adu) and his Armenian Lebanese boss Levon (Karren Karagulian), two unlikely friends who peddle knockoff designer goods in Manhattan's wholesale district. When a long-forgotten ex forces him to take care of a young son he didn't even know he had, Lucky must figure out how to become a father without losing his edge in the counterfeit-merch game. Capturing the chaos of urban life through expressive handheld camera work, remarkably naturalistic performances, and flashes of manic humor, Prince of Broadway is one of Baker's most vivid explorations of the illusory nature of the American dream.DIRECTOR-APPROVED BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURESNew 4K digital restoration, supervised and approved by director Sean Baker and restoration supervisor Alex Coco, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrackTwo audio commentaries: one featuring Baker and the other featuring producer and cowriter Darren Dean, associate producer and actor Victoria Tate, and actor Karren KaragulianNew introduction by BakerArchival interviews with Baker and actor Prince AduTwo documentaries on the making of the filmRestoration demonstration featuring Baker and CocoTrailersEnglish subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearingPLUS: An essay by film critic Robert DanielsNew cover by Drusilla Adeline/Sister Hyde, with additional photography by Ivory WoodsIsaac FeldbergIsaac Feldberg is an entertainment journalist currently based in Chicago, who's been writing professionally for nine years and hopes to stay at it for a few more.
