Lass mich gerne wissen, was du für dich mitnimmst!
One of Iran's most celebrated filmmakers, Jafar Panahi, has spent the last quarter of a century in conflict with the Iranian government, which objects to his films' criticisms of their actions and the wider social conditions in the country, and has both arrested him several times and banned him from making films for twenty years - which hasn't stopped him. His latest, It Was Just an Accident, won the 2025 Palme d'Or, and tells the story of former political prisoners who capture a man they suspect was their torturer. It's a brilliant thriller which, despite the gravity and darkness of its subject matter, is energetic and entertaining. It effortlessly raises both moral and practical questions - What's the right thing to do with their captive? Have they become the torturers? If they let him live, won't he just come after them again? - without entering morality play territory, neither pretending to have the answers nor admonishing its characters for their choices and emotional responses. It's a vivid expression of the lasting effect the actions of the Iranian regime have had on its people, for whom merely the suggestion that they might be able to exact revenge on their torturer causes instant emotional outbursts. We discuss all this and more, including the depiction of a lawless culture in which you're constantly expected to give bribes to get by; the filmmaking, in which no filming permits were provided and Panahi had to once again violate his filmmaking ban; the question of how ambiguous the end might be and what that means; and a comparison with American cinema in Trump's America and the question of what might be happening under ICE, the immigration enforcement agency that's expanded into a neo-paramilitary force over the last year. It Was Just an Accident is a magnificent film. See it. Recorded on 10th December 2025.
Tom and guests Arifa Akbar and Nick Hilton consider Paddington The Musical. It's the latest step for a beloved British institution... How does he work on stage? Is the bear believable? Are the songs memorable?Iranian director Jafar Panahi's latest film has won the Palme d'Or. It Was Just An Accident, straddles a difficult gap between political commentary and a lightly comic look at revenge. He had to make this film in secret and has just been sentenced - in absentia - to a prison sentence by the Iranian authorities for "propaganda activities" against the country. In The War Between the Land and the Sea, the latest offshoot of the Whoniverse, Russell Tovey plays a humble admin assistant who is promoted to humanity's Ambassador when the Sea Devils return and decide that humans need to be taught respect for their watery world. Evan is back! We're happy to have him. First up is Megan's solo turn on HAMNET (2:19), director Chloé Zhao's adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's novel (with a screenplay by Zhao and O'Farrell), a historical drama about Anne Hathaway and William Shakespeare's marriage following the tragic death of their 11-year-old son. Then Evan, Megan, and Dave talk about Paul Thomas Anderson's ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER (15:16), but Dave is called away mid-conversation by a child in need (one of his, not some rando who wandered in from the hinterlands). Evan and Megan pick up the conversation and then discuss writer-director Jafar Panahi's latest, the nakedly anti-authoritarian thriller IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT (42:09), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and is France's submission for Best International Feature Film at the 2026 Academy Awards. Over on Patreon, we talk about our poll winner, the 2013 summer movie THE WAY WAY BACK.
Hope Hopkinson talks to filmmaker Jafar Panahi about his Palme d'Or winning film, It Was Just An Accident. The story begins when Vahid (Vahid Mobasseri), a mechanic in a Tehran garage, is visited by Eghbal (Ebrahim Azizi) whose car has been in an accident. The distinctive squeak of Eghbal's prosthetic leg makes Vahid suspect the stranger is the sadist who tortured him in prison. Those suspicions are enough for Vahid to take Eghbal captive and dig him a grave in the desert. What follows is a riveting moral thriller that unflinchingly addresses censorship, authoritarianism and human rights abuses, powered throughout by a relentless momentum and the indelible craft of a master auteur. Yet it is also a film that contrives to be deeply and movingly humane, not least in the way it derives dark humour from its knotty scenario. Subscribe on Apple Podcasts. Follow us on Spotify. Pelle Neroth Taylor is a Swedish-British journalist, filmmaker, and political writer based in Sweden, renowned for his investigative work on geopolitics, propaganda, political assassinations, and the rise of European populism. Educated at Westminster School and Bristol University, he began his career in the early 1990s reporting for The Economist from the post-communist Baltic States, later editing and contributing to outlets like The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Times, Financial Times, Sunday Times, New Scientist, and The Lancet. As founder of Two Raven Films, he has produced documentaries such as Sweden, Dying to Be Multicultural, a critical examination of Sweden's immigration policies that has garnered over 2 million views on platforms like Amazon Prime and Blckbx TV, and Cancel Nation, addressing censorship and cancel culture. Kari Poutiainen is a Swedish physicist and one of Sweden's most persistent independent investigators of the 1986 assassination of Prime Minister Olof Palme. Together with his brother Pertti, he wrote the influential 1995 book Inuti labyrinten (“Inside the Labyrinth”), a meticulous critique of the official police investigation that became a bestseller and a classic reference work in the Palme case. For over three decades Poutiainen has continued his research, publishing additional books and appearing in documentaries and interviews. In recent years he has strongly advocated the theory that the murder was carried out by or with the involvement of Sweden's secret Cold War “Stay Behind” network, motivated by Palme's independent foreign policy and his contacts with Mikhail Gorbachev. The fabulous Edgar Wright joins us on this week's Take to talk ‘The Running Man'—his new adaptation of the Stephen King dystopia. You might remember the Arnie version from 1987, but Wright's is a refreshed take starring very angry action man Glen Powell. He plays Ben Richards, an out-of-work dad living in the slums of a sci-fi totalitarian state, who enters a deathmatch gameshow in the hope of winning the cash he needs to save his sick child. Edgar and Simon talk action classics, staying on Arnie's good side, and why Stephen King called the film ‘Die Hard for our time'. Mark reviews it too—plus two more big movies out this week: a blockbuster and an exciting indie. In the arthouse corner, the Palme d'Or-winning ‘Titane' director Julia Ducournau's latest, ‘Alpha'. In her usual out-there style, it follows a troubled teenage girl who returns home with a mysterious tattoo, amidst a terrifying bloodborne epidemic. This week, hosts Laura Gommans and Elliot Bloom take on three standout releases. Benny Safdie's The Smashing Machine, a quirky biopic starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as MMA legend Mark Kerr, prompts the question: did it really deserve a fifteen-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival? To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Robert Zemeckis's blockbuster classic Back to the Future returns, as Laura and Elliot debate whether Marty McFly's story is truly as relatable as we think. Finally, they unpack Jafar Panahi's It Was Just an Accident, the Palme d'Or–winning film made secretly in defiance of the Iranian regime, which continues to censor and punish Panahi for his bold filmmaking.Get tickets to The Smashing Machine @ LAB111Get tickets to Back To The Future @ LAB111Get tickets to It Was Just An Accident @ LAB111

It's Lobster's birthday, and what better way to acknowledge the toll aging takes on our bodies than to watch a movie about what goes wrong when we try to cheat the clock. From writer-director Coralie Fargeat comes the tale of Elizabeth Sparkle, a former sex symbol and acclaimed actress turned daytime tv aerobics instructor. When a mysterious treatment offers to restore her youthful appearance, the realization that beauty is only skin deep is only the first of many horrors that await. Starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley in dual roles, this 2024 release burst onto the scene at Cannes, where it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and Fargeat won Best Screenplay. After a wide release, which saw the film bring in $80 million through word-of-mouth social media marketing, it earned five Oscar noms, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Moore, taking home the statue for Best Makeup & Hairstyling. But appearance isn't everything, so let's take a long hard look in the mirror and decide if we like what we see. Is The Substance all style, and no substance? Or is it the stuff that dreams are made of? And for Legends of Halloween, that means it's also the stuff of nightmares! Salud, tiritos y teatro!
When Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro was a kid growing up in Guadalajara, Mexico, he would draw monsters all day. His deeply Catholic grandmother even had him exorcised because of it. But when del Toro saw the 1931 film Frankenstein, his life changed. "I realized I understood my faith or my dogmas better through Frankenstein than through Sunday mass." His new adaptation of Mary Shelley's classic book drops on Netflix Nov. 7. He spoke with Terry Gross about getting over his fear of death, the design of Frankenstein's creature, and his opinion on generative AI.

This year, Iranian director Jafar Panahi won the Palme d'Or at Cannes for his extraordinary new film, “It Was Just an Accident,” which he shot secretly in Tehran under great risk of serious harm. Jafar has been in prison twice on charges of “anti-government propaganda” as well as for protesting the imprisonment of other filmmakers. At this year's Toronto International Film Festival, he joined Tom Power to tell us how “It Was Just an Accident” was shaped by his two experiences in Tehran's Evin Prison.Fill out our listener survey here. "It Was Just An Accident" is a thriller film written and directed by legendary Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi. The film is a co-production between Iran, Luxembourg, and France, the latter selecting it as the country's official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards. The film explores political repression in Iran and morality as a group of former political prisoners kidnap their torturer and decide what to do with him. Panahi, who is critical of the Iranian government and has been imprisoned several times, made the film without official filming permission from the Iranian authorities. The film had its world premiere at the main competition of the 78th Cannes Film Festival, where it received universal acclaim and won the prestigious Palme d'Or. Panahi and editor Amir Etminan were kind enough to spend some time speaking with us about their work and experience making the film, which you can listen to below. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now playing in theaters from NEON. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Ep. 355: Jafar Panahi on It Was Just an Accident Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This year during the New York Film Festival, I was extremely fortunate to speak with Jafar Panahi, director of It Was Just an Accident. The story concerns a prison survivor who runs into the man he believes to be his former tormenter, leading him to take action and reconnect with others. Panahi's outstanding film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, after years of government bans of one kind or another on his filmmaking and freedoms. Through a translator I spoke with Panahi about It Was Just an Accident and especially the enduring philosophical issues raised by its characters living under a repressive regime. It Was Just an Accident opens in theaters on October 15. My thanks to the translator for making the conversation possible. (Please note that because of recording circumstances, the audio of my questions is only in English.) Director Jafar Panahi returned to the New York Film Festival for the first time in 25 years to present the Main Slate selection It Was Just an Accident, his first film since his 2022 imprisonment. The legendary filmmakers discussed Panahi's childhood, early days of filmmaking, his relationship with Abbas Kiarostami, the rebellious nature of his work, his 2025 Palme d'Or winner, and much more. Thank you to interpreter Sheida Dayani. It Was Just An Accident opens at Film at Lincoln Center on October 15 with Panahi in person. The 63rd New York Film Festival is presented in partnership with Rolex.

This key figure in the Iranian New Wave, one of only four filmmakers ever awarded the top prize at each of the three biggest European film festivals, reflects on his cinematic critiques of Iranian society, continuing to work even after being jailed by the regime and then banned from making films under the threat of being sent back to jail, and how his own experience with a prison interrogator partially inspired his latest film, which won Cannes' Palme d'Or in May and was just chosen as France's entry for the best international feature Oscar race.
