Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted sits down for an in-depth conversation about his battle with throat cancer and his triumphant return to music. He discusses the Chophouse Band tour, including headline shows and dates supporting Blackberry Smoke, culminating in two nights at the historic Ryman Auditorium. Jason opens up about why he plays guitar and sings in The Chophouse Band rather than bass, his painting career, and offers candid reflections on Metallica's legacy including the Black Album and the controversial bass mix on 'And Justice for All.' He also touches on the unrealized Van Halen tribute project and emphasizes the importance of cancer screening and early detection. After that, Phil Collins sits down with Eddie Trunk to talk about his long-overdue induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist. Phil opens up about how the recognition caught him completely off guard, despite selling over 100 million albums both solo and with Genesis. He takes listeners back to the creation of his landmark album Face Value, revealing how personal struggles and an empty house led to some of his most iconic work. Phil shares the fascinating origin story of 'In the Air Tonight,' from its improvised lyrics to that legendary drum break, and discusses how his solo success actually helped Genesis break through in America. We're always excited to talk about Cam Sully, the host of the Jacked Up Review Show! We found him as a guest on another ridiculous podcast all about the Muppets. He brought his buddy Oreo Brewer and together they couldn't make a worse team. Fortunately, they're both wildly unprepared. Earl David Reed is live in studio with us and decided to not murder Chris and me for making him watch this show. We check in on how bad Tim Heidecker is doing now that's he's playing the Alex Jones character before watching Brendan Schaub explain that all of his podcast friends have passed him by. Bill Burr interviewed Jason Newsted who hasn't been relevant since 1996. But Bill knows music! He's a music geek! So the conversation is top-notch. Stuttering John gets choked up talking about how amazing he is/was. We finish with the internet news and your voicemails. This week, a continuation of our series called “In The Shadow Of…”, where we compare obscure bands to a mainstream act. This is not about copycats, but more about artists with similar vibes, a shared sonic landscape, or whose songwriting and playing styles are sympatico. This is another band that is near and dear to both of your humble hosts. A band that is synonymous with the word “Rock n' Roll”. A band of outlaws, rebels, and riffage; the iconic MOTÖRHEAD! Join us as we discover other bands that were influenced and inspired by England's loudest band. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This is not a statement about bands trying to copy one another, but more that they have a shared sound and vision. It's been said that there is no originality left in rock n' roll and also been stated that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:City Kings – “Cherry” from Steel Rock N Roll (2023)Asomvel – “Louder And Louder” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Newsted – “Soldierhead” from Metal - EP (2013)Gunslinger – “Smoke Wagon” from Amped Up (2025)Whitespade – “Below The Law” from Whitespade (2022)Girlschool – “Bomber” from St. Valentine's Day Massacre - EP (1981)Chrome Division – “Booze, Broads, & Beelzebub” from Booze, Broads, & Beelzebub(2008)Brass Against – “Ace Of Spades” from Ace Of Spades - Single(2025)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/
Nedslagspunkter: - Det hårdt rockende metalår 1987 må nødvendigvis bydes velkommen af Guns N' Roses og “Welcome To the Jungle”. - Producer Rick Rubin kaster sin AC/DC- og Rolling Stones-kærlighed over The Cults autentiske rock'n'roll-udspil “Electric”, mens AC/DC's lydtekniker fra “Highway To Hell”, Mike Dearnley, producerer D-A-D debuten “D-A-D Draws a Circle”. - I januar ‘87 genoptager Metallica deres Europa-turné. Først i Falkoner Teatret, København, og dagen efter i Holstebro Hallen. Senere på året udkommer bandets første indspilning med bassisten Jason Newsted, cover-EP'en "Garage Days The 5,98 Dollar EP". - Fuld smæk på Bay Area-scenen, hvor Exodus udsender album nr. 2 “Pleasures of the Flesh”, Testament deres debutalbum "The Legacy" og Death Angel deres debut “The Ultra-Violence”.

“Those guys are parents to 2 babies…and we're fighting over which baby is cuter…” With SIDE 2 of our PUPPETS VS JUSTICE HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH, things are a bit trickier, because the math doesn't sync up perfectly track for track. But not to worry, because we worked out all the math to try and keep things as “Even Steven” as possible. “You go to the peak of your ability…that's what Justice was…it was their Hemispheres…” As we noted previously on the SIDE 1 episode, PUPPETS represents the end of the Cliff Burton era, and JUSTICE represents the beginning of the Jason Newsted era. On SIDE 2, we got deeper into the weeds, particularly with regard to the lyrical subject matter, the style and structure of the songs, and the personal impact and perspective of the instrumentals. We're not saying that this was a complete blowout, and we're not saying that the outcome was predictable by any means, but what we ARE saying is that the final verdict was actually a bit more shocking than we originally anticipated. “What are they saying, dude?” Stick around until the very end of the episode to discover the power of “frontmasking” after you JOIN US for the nail-biting conclusion to our PUPPETS VS JUSTICE HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH as we take on SIDE 2. “How about we let the producer ‘produce'?” We've all heard that METALLICA's “last great album” was 1986's haunting thrash metal magnum opus, MASTER OF PUPPETS, one of the finest moments in the band's catalog and the final studio album of “The First Three” to feature Cliff Burton on bass. “I don't care if there's no bass…I'm sorry…” We've also all heard (especially since the release of The Black Album) that METALLICA's “last great album” was 1988's progressive thrash metal tour de force, …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL, the fourth METALLICA studio album overall and the first (of four) to feature Jason Newsted on bass (according to the liner notes, anyway). “The bass is the LAST thing I listen to…” Having said that, BOTH are outstanding and powerful albums for very different reasons, with PUPPETS marking the haunting, final chapter of Cliff Burton's legacy with what many fans consider to be the classic, legendary era of the band, and JUSTICE beginning a brand new chapter for the band with Jason Newsted, launching METALLICA into a new era that would ultimately result in their meteoric rise to success and glory as the biggest and most popular heavy metal band on planet earth. “Y'all are gonna abuse me for using this word…” JOIN US for a HEAD-TO-HEAD DEATH MATCH that promises to be absolutely “creamy” and chock full of 80's metal nostalgia and loads of heated commentary as we take on SIDE ONE with 1986's MASTER OF PUPPETS & 1988's …AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. In an unexpected turn of events, reports from the Netherlands suggest that Alex Van Halen is working on a brand-new Van Halen album, and he's enlisted Steve Lukather to help complete the project! For years, speculation surrounded the Van Halen name—whether it was the abandoned tribute tour featuring Jason Newsted and Joe Satriani or Sammy Hagar's Best of All Worlds Tour keeping the music alive. But now, it looks like a 13th Van Halen studio album is actually happening! Alex Van Halen has confirmed that he's working with Lukather, stating, “Ed and Steve Lukather were very good friends and they often worked together. There is no one who can do this process with me as well as he can.” Lukather responded, “Ed, Alex, and I were very close for years. It is true that we worked on it together.” Lukather's connection to the Van Halen brothers runs deep—from jamming together to Eddie playing bass on Lukather's solo album and even collaborating on Michael Jackson's Beat It! But the big question remains:
DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER, the debut album from FLOTSAM & JETSAM, was released on July 4, 1986, after being recorded in just a mere 2 weeks with a paltry $12,000 budget. In short, it is a bona fide, legendary, thrash masterpiece. And if you're reading this and thinking “Okay, FLOTSAM & JETSAM…why does that sound familiar?”, the reason is because the bass player for that band would later become Metallica's new bassist following the tragic and untimely death of Cliff Burton in late 1986. It is without question, a speed/power/thrash/heavy metal classic that is so steeped in 1986 vibes that we're actually surprised none of the album was featured on “Stranger Things”. Learn the latest metal conspiracy theory regarding AJFA with a shocking twist nobody saw coming, discover a great new way to “get in shape” with the brand-new aerobic workout craze that's sweeping the nation, get ready to enjoy the “tang” and JOIN US for the only “first new album” featuring Jason Newsted with a killer bass mix as we take on DOOMSDAY FOR THE DECEIVER. On the 55th Episode of the Album Review Crew of Shout It Out Loudcast, Tom, Zeus & special guest, comedian and podcaster Don Jamieson, review the 1991 legendary album by Metallica, the self-titled album known as the "Black Album." The "Black Album" was Metallica's fifth studio album. It propelled Metallica from a small, but dedicated fan base to superstardom. Led by frontman, main lyricist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfied, polarizing drummer Lars Ulrich, guitarist extraordinaire Kirk Hammet and bassist Jason Newsted. The album features five singles including a couple ballads, which were unheard of previously and the now classic, Enter Sandman. Although they did have a video for the previous album's single, "One", Metallica really utilized MTV and the music video format to propel the "Black Album." The album made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard charts and has now gone 16X platinum, making it not only Metallica's biggest selling album, but one of the biggest selling album in history. The album was produced by Bob Rock and although it may have been a tumultuous relationship, which was documented, the result cannot be denied. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. They then rank the album and the album cover against the previous albums reviewed on the Album Review Crew. This was Tom's pick. So tune in to see if the album satisfies the purist or the newbie Metallica fan and if it makes them Rock Hard! This week Clint chats with Phil Dibowitz, the creator of the Insanity Palace of Metallica (IPOM) website. IPOM was created 27 years ago (when Phil was just 15!) as a resource for Metallica fans to keep up to date on Metallica news, lyric theories, discography and live shows. All these years later it's till rolling and is the last stop for keeping up with your personal Metallica tour stats and the most accurate catalogue of unique Metallica guitar picks.Clint and Phil talk about the early days of the internet, how Metallica and MTV opened their minds, learning to code and build fan websites, volunteering for Metallica, seeing nearly 200 shows, favorite and least favorite songs on each album, attending both Berkley S&M shows and sneaking backstage to hangout with Jason Newsted. Enjoy!Visit the Insanity Palace of Metallica HERE.Help support the website HERE.Follow IPOM on Facebook HERE.Direct link to the guitar picks section HERE.Personal tour report section HERE.If you think Metal Up Your Podcast has value, please consider taking a brief moment to leave a positive review and subscribe on iTunes here:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/metal-up-your-podcast-all-things-metallica/id1187775077You can further support the show by becoming a patron.
