As we near the end of Tao te Ching's 81 verses, we see Lao Tzu revisit some high themes we've seen before. Today's verse 74 treats how our prior grounding and rootage in Tao is ever and always stronger than culture's siren calls to pay attention to the worthless, lifeless dreads and find  of thinking. We hear from Paul Coelho, Abraham Lincoln, Cornel West, and the book of Ecclesiastes. Reminder! Verse 73 has a unique take and message for us looking for patterns in the universe to support our penchants for assigning “good” and “bad”, or “right” and “wrong” in advance as the universe unfolds around us.Instead, this verse might tempt us to flirt with becoming a student of the “Great Maybe” – a life where we let others make distinctions where there are none, while we return to the original uncarved block of existence where we find ourselvesoriginally defined by eternal Tao, and not by some temporary culture. We talk about theodicy, or the tendencies we have to offer predigested answers about why seemingly bad things happen. Verse 72 has been translated several ways through the centuries. We look at these differing translations, and then focus on the power of fear to dampen our experience of Tao's adjacent, fecund wisdom. We conclude that there is a “right fear” – such as fear of not preventing an injustice – that can influence us to act, and help us to overcome any inertia not to act.Reminder! Strongly-worded verse this time! Lao Tzu teaches about the subtle conspiracies of ignorance to dumb us down, weigh us down, & bring us down. But who anymore thinks of ignorance is an illness? Verse 71 teaches how Ignorance is not bliss; it is brutal, and can make us into the walking dead. How to work with or overcome ignorance? We offer several ways to deal with the silent killer disease of ignorance. What'sthe difference between knowing something, and understanding it? Maybe to know something is a mark of achievement and pride we saturate with our words, while to *understand* something or someone is a wordless condition, a state where we are VERY close to our original birthright status in Tao. Leadership, whether in nations, schools and homes today is usually of a style that preaches, however subtly, “You need me to save, teach or parent you.” But the truth is that the leader is the paragon of being a follower. So once again, Tao overturns our expectations, turning our norms upside-down, where leadership is following, teaching is a return to being a learner, and parenting is a back and forth dialogue where parent and child each matters. ‘… Drew Back The Curtain, To See For Certain' - Stage & Screen Lyricist, Storyteller and Musical Theatre Titan; Sir Tim Rice

STAGES with Peter Eyers

From an early age Tim Rice was a pop music fanatic. He began his professional life as a trainee solicitor. While still an apprenticed clerk Tim approached the head of Arlington Books, Desmond Elliot, with the idea of writing a book about pop history. The idea didn't impress Elliot, but the fact that Tim was also a budding song-writer did. Elliot knew someone in need of a collaborator: a young man called Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wanted to be a composer. At Elliot's suggestion, Tim wrote to Andrew, and a meeting was quickly arranged. The two men hit it off immediately, and, owing to Andrew's love of American musical theatre, began to try to write a musical rather than pop singles. And so this story begins. Tim Rice continued to work with Andrew Lloyd Webber, giving us visceral and intelligent musical theatre fare that includes Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Jesus Christ Superstar and Evita. The pair also share the unique accolade of writing a song for Elvis Presley; “It's Easy for You”. The song is also remarkable in that it is the last song on the last album released during Elvis' lifetime. Subsequent collaborations have been with fellow titans of the craft - Elton John, Alan Menken, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson creating popular theatrical fare that includes Chess, The Lion King, Aladdin and Aida. His output has been presented by the Disney Organisation, on Broadway, in The West End and for commercial stages around the globe. The popularity of his works with community and school theatres has ensured that at any time, somewhere in the world, a Tim Rice musical is being produced. This year in Australia alone we have seen commercial productions of Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat and Beauty & the Beast. Tim is the recipient of 3 Academy Awards, 4 Tonys, 5 Grammys and 1 Emmy - making him that ‘rare bird' in the entertainment industry - one of only 17 artists to have garnered an EGOT. He was knighted by Elizabeth 2nd for services to music in 1994. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, is an inductee to the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, a Disney Legend Recipient, a fellow of the British Academy of Songwriters, and has his own Cricket team. With Andrew Lloyd Webber he wrote a musical for Queen Elizabeth titled Cricket, and has crafted songs for Freddy Mercury, Placido Domingo and David Essex.Tim Rice has contributed songs to soundtracks, such as “All Time High” for the Bond movie Octopussy. His most recent musical work, From Here To Eternity opened in 2013. He is the co-author of the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles and a co-founder of Pavilion Books. And today, celebrates 400 episodes of the STAGES podcast. The STAGES podcast is available to access and subscribe from Spotify and Apple podcasts. Sandy Thornton has been a primary school teacher since 2003. She is passionate about learning, and has a ‘can do' approach to all things educational. After gaining QTS, her natural teaching ability was quickly recognised when she became part of the fast track teacher initiative. Then in 2010 she became an advanced skills teacher which enabled her to use her outstanding teaching skills both in her own school and to support teachers in other schools. But she didn't stop there! In 2011 she became an assistant headteacher, before completing the Post Graduate Certificate for Primary Maths Specialists, and then she became a Specialist Leader in Education. She is currently a Cohort Leader and Senior Trainer with Suffolk and Norfolk Primary SCITT. That sounds enough to be going on with, but on top of that she even finds time to coach the Great Britain junior and senior netball squads for the Maccabiah Games in Israel. She is one busy lady! During our conversation we discussed ... The joy of seeing those magical moments when children light up after they have learnt how to do something new. That moment when you are both thrilled and filled with fear as you walk into class for the first time with the stabilisers off! How to break the ice by getting the guitar out and singing a song that everyone joins in with. Using music and singing to help children learn. Every lesson has a song don't you know, so learn the key ideas by singing about them. The importance of having high expectations of all children because invariably children will meet the high expectations you have of them. How the Pharaoh's motorbike in a production of Joseph and his Technicolor Dreamcoat enthralled and energised one boy who was a reluctant learner. Teaching is all about having a transformational impact on children and making their lives much better because you have taught them. You can connect with Sandy on Twitter @thornton_sandy

We are closing up the starring role of Yaakov Avinu (Jacob), and now shifting to his second youngest son — Yosef (Joseph, of Technicolor Dreamcoat fame of course!!!) When Yosef is introduced, he is the youngest brother of all of Yaakov's wives' children. Yosef is said to have spent his time with the children of Bilhah and Zilpah (Yaakov's 2 handmaidens, not quite at the level of full wives like Rachel and Leah). Why mention who he hangs out with? Wouldn't a “Yosef was friends with his brothers” do the trick? There are 3 most common explanations that greatly differ, but the one I like best is from Rashi. Rashi, Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki, explains that Yosef spent more time with the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah because the sons of Leah (again, Yaakov's other “main wife” besides Rachel) spurned these sons of “lesser” wives, and so Yosef went out of his way to befriend them. Ugh this interpretation warms my soul. Have you ever watched a show or movie where a pariah-type, outcast character is introduced? Someone who is clearly being put up to provide some sort of foil for the beautiful, charming main character? Most of the time, the beautiful and charming main character doesn't do what I want them to when they see the outcast being bullied or mistreated. I want them to stand up for the outcast!! Use their high status to raise the lower. It so rarely happens, but when the beautiful and charming main character DOES treat the outcast well at their own risk, firstly I am so happy, but secondly, their beauty and charm is multiplied by tons. At least to me! Yosef is SUCH a beautiful and charming main character and I really love this mental image of him being friends with Bilhah and Zilpah's sons. Yaakov really loves Yosef, like almost too much. Yaakov likes Yosef best for a number of reasons — Yosef is a child in Yaakov's old age, and Yosef is his only son so far from his favorite wife Rachel. So Yaakov makes Yosef a fine tunic (כתונת פסים / ketonet passim). This is of course is the Technicolor Dreamcoat from the musical retelling of Yosef's story (Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber). Yosef's brothers aren't too crazy about him, though. He tells on them when they're acting up, he gets a fancy coat, a musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and on top of all that, he also shares his prophetic dreams. These dreams, though eventually proven, aren't very complimentary for the future of his siblings. One day, when Yosef is sent to check on his brothers, they decide to do away with him once and for all. They throw him in a pit but then change their minds when they see a caravan of Yishmaelim (Ishmaelites), tradesmen heading toward Egypt (Mitzrayim) and decide to sell him as a slave. The Torah specifically mentions that the tradesmen were carrying spices, balms, and lotus. Why? Doesn't seem like the most relevant usage of words, and as we discuss, the Torah never uses even an extraneous letter. Rashi comments this is the reward of the righteous. Usually tradesmen in these areas would only carry tar or bad-smelling oils, but because Yosef was a tzadik, it was arranged that the caravan taking Yosef would have only beautiful smells. Often when we think of the Book of Genesis we are drawn towards the Creation Story, the soap opera drama of Adam and Eve, and the tragic violence of Cain and Able. However, Genesis is a foundational book for much of Judaism and Christianity. It’s in this book we find the story of Noah, the Tower of Babel, and the genealogy of the Abrahamic traditions all the way through the story of Joseph and his brothers.Joseph is the youngest of Jacob’s sons. He was favored by his father, symbolized by a robe immortalized in Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. However, Joseph’s favoritism, his robe, and eventually his dreams drives a wedge between him and his brothers leading to a tragic scene between all of them.Today’s scripture reading comes from the Book of Genesis chapter 37 verses 12 through 28:Now his brothers went to pasture their father’s flock near Shechem. And Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing the flock at Shechem? Come, I will send you to them.” He answered, “Here I am.” So he said to him, “Go now, see if it is well with your brothers and with the flock; and bring word back to me.” So he sent him from the valley of Hebron. He came to Shechem, and a man found him wandering in the fields; the man asked him, “What are you seeking?” “I am seeking my brothers,” he said; “tell me, please, where they are pasturing the flock.” The man said, “They have gone away, for I heard them say, ‘Let us go to Dothan.’” So Joseph went after his brothers, and found them at Dothan. They saw him from a distance, and before he came near to them, they conspired to kill him. They said to one another, “Here comes this dreamer. Come now, let us kill him and throw him into one of the pits; then we shall say that a wild animal has devoured him, and we shall see what will become of his dreams.” But when Reuben heard it, he delivered him out of their hands, saying, “Let us not take his life.” Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood; throw him into this pit here in the wilderness, but lay no hand on him”—that he might rescue him out of their hand and restore him to his father. So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him of his robe, the long robe with sleeves that he wore; and they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.Then they sat down to eat; and looking up they saw a caravan of Ishmaelites coming from Gilead, with their camels carrying gum, balm, and resin, on their way to carry it down to Egypt. Then Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it if we kill our brother and conceal his blood? Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites, and not lay our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own flesh.” And his brothers agreed. When some Midianite traders passed by, they drew Joseph up, lifting him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver. And they took Joseph to Egypt. For the Word of God in scripture, for the Word of God among us, and for the Word of God within us we say…Thanks be to God.

We discuss the life and passion of an artist and performer.  Did Janeen ever think about the fact that her career as a dancer actually had a “shelf life?”  Janeen says she didn’t want to go from a dancer to a choreographer which, typically,  is the natural progression when dancers near the end of their dance career.  She actually returned to her roots as a professional horseback rider where a casting company came to hire people for a commercial, met her, and so began her career behind the camera.     Janeen met her now husband Michael Damian, best known as Danny Romalotti,  (Young and the Restless and  Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat on Broadway) in Los Angeles and married 14 years later.  While on their honeymoon in France, they took a leap of faith and began their new careers as creators and writers of a television pilot shot in Paris with Michael trying out his chops as a director.  From that point on, they have never looked back and have worked together, side by side for the last 20 years.    We discuss being a woman in the male dominated film industry and how Janeen has gracefully dealt with all that came her way.  Janeen and JoJami’s father, actor,James Best (The Dukes of Hazzard) taught both his daughters from an early age about the land mines of being a woman in the world of entertainment, which Janeen says helped her, “ avoid getting into uncomfortable situations”, from the onset of her career.     Check out our video on how to Subscribe and Download Ladies Road Map on you iPhone: https://www.ladiesroadmap.com/podcast/   Book, Videos and Links mentioned: • The Shell Seekers, by Rosamunde Pilcher • Janeen Best on IMDB • High Strung HELP US SPREAD THE WORD!
