Travis Schlenk "stepped down" as the general manager of the Atlanta Hawks. If you look a little deeper, you'll really see what's going on here and that's simply that there were too many philosophical differences between Schlenk and owner Tony Ressler and Schlenk was likely fired. Plus, it makes little sense that Landry Fields, with so little experience was given the GM job alone. Next, the Georgia Bulldogs once again hit a home run on National Signing Day with the second-best recruiting class. But don't sleep on what some of the other programs did either. Finally, Alex Anthopolous spilled the beans with The Athletic about how far off the Braves were in numbers to Dansby Swanson returning to Atlanta. It's an awful reflection of Braves ownership and Liberty Media. Also, Mark Zinno handed out a Shovel of Wisdom. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

The All-Star comes to the Brewers from the Braves with five years of team control to be the catcher of the future for the Brewers.Dom chats with Atlanta Journal-Constitution Braves reporter, Justin Toscano to get the Braves reaction to the trade and how Alex Anthopolous reacted to the national media calling this trade a Brewers win.We also hear from GM Matt Arnold on the move itself, what they see in Contreras, and what he will bring to Milwaukee. Alex Anthopolous makes a move out of nowhere, dealing a boatload of Braves prospects and William Contreras in a 3 team swap to bring the catching prize Sean Murphy to Atlanta. What does this mean for 2023? I don't know for sure, but I'm here to break down the trade with you.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Atlanta Braves are sitting on the sideline so far at the winter meetings and watching and waiting. Watching other teams spend money and add free agents. Waiting for their shortstop Dansby Swanson to make a decision on where he is going to play next year. It's okay for the Braves to stand pat and not add a major piece. If they lose Swanson, it's easy to trust that general manager Alex Anthopolous has a plan in place. Next, the transfer portal exploded with players on its first day. Alabama had 19 players enter the portal, which was more than any other Power 5 school and it could signal that Alabama is in a state of major transition now that the Georgia Bulldogs are on top. Finally, the Atlanta Hawks will have to respond. Trae Young will have to respond. Sometimes the best way to settle a controversy is to let your play do the talking. That's what Trae and the Hawks need to do. Also, Mark Zinno handed out a Shovel of Wisdom. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

In the opening hour with Andy and Randy, we break down the Braves postseason roster announcement ahead of today's Game 1. We hear cuts from Arthur Smith breaking down his QB play thus far this season. And Grant McAuley sits down with Alex Anthopolous ahead of today's Game 1 to talk about the Strider contract.
In the first hour of today's show Randy & Robb talked about the Braves losing to the Mets, Alex Anthopolous comments on Mercedes-Benz Stadium & the big changes going on in college football. Later in the hour Beau Johnson joins for "The Backpage with Beau"
Andy & Randy kicked off today's show talking about the great day the Braves had yesterday between shutting out the Mets, Charlie Morton's start, Olson's HR, Soroka's rehab start in High-A and Alex Anthopolous signing Michael Harris to an 8yr/$72 Million contract. Later in the hour the guys were joined by Beau Johnson for "The Backpage with Beau."
The Atlanta Braves drop the first game of their huge series with the New York Mets. The Braves didn't get the start they wanted, but Ronald Acuña did snap an 18-game homerless streak. Mark Zinno talked about how the Braves will have to rely on Ian Anderson in a spot where it's really hard to trust him. Secondly, the Atlanta Falcons was off on Thursday, so no major notes from training camp. However, Mark Zinno did some research on a stat that could help determine how effective the offense is this season. Also, Zinno talked about how the offensive line preventing sacks is key, but there is one other area that could be the difference for this team. Lastly, Alex Anthopolous is a genius. At least he should be widely known as one. Jayston Stark of The Athletic heaps huge praise on the Braves general manager for more than just deadline deals. Mark Zinno talked about how the Braves should keep Anthopoulos around for a long time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
The NFL is appealing the Deshaun Watson suspension and this will likely get messier before it is settled. Mark Zinno talked about what he expects that the NFL will land on 10-12 games as punishment. Also, Zinno discussed how the NFLPA is likely to sue the NFL for dragging out this decision. Secondly, there is one statistical category that Arthur Smith excels in as a play caller and that's explosive plays. Smith mentioned how critical those were and the numbers back up his ability while he was the offensive coordinator in Tennessee. Mark Zinno talked about how Smith changing that surface narrative in Atlanta this season, could yield big results. Lastly, the Atlanta Braves began a 17-day stretch that will likely decide their ability to win the National League East. Alex Anthopolous made some subtle moves at the MLB trade deadline to fill immediate needs. Mark Zinno talked about whether or not Anthopoulos' moves will help the Braves in this huge five-game series against the New York Mets. Learn more about your ad choices. The MLB trade deadline was about sizzle versus steak. The San Diego Padres were the sizzle, but Alex Anthopolous and the Atlanta Braves were the steak. These two teams seem like they are headed on a collision course for the postseason. Mark Zinno talked about how the Padres should be applauded for going all in and trading for Juan Soto. Secondly, the Atlanta Braves have themselves a phenom in Spencer Strider. He has proven that he is one of the top three starters on this staff and should be given the ball in the playoffs over Charlie Morton and Ian Anderson. Mark Zinno talked about Strider absolutely being the guy to give the ball to in the playoffs. Lastly, the Atlanta Falcons still have a lot of proving to do with the doubters. Mark Zinno talked about how Arthur Smith will take pre-season games a little more seriously than he did last year. Also, Zinno discussed the Falcons not being who people think they are, and two young players to watch out for on defense. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Arthur Smith and the Atlanta Falcons look a lot different than they did last year. For Smith, that's intentional because he and Terry Fontenot want to get guys that fit their system. So, Mark Zinno gave his observations from day one of training camp. Also, Zinno talked about a quarterback competition that would be a good thing for Marcus Mariota and Desmond Ridder. Secondly, the Atlanta Braves have some players on the struggle bus right now. Charlie Morton and Ronald Acuña Jr. both are at the top of the list. And with the trade deadline looming, general manager Alex Anthopolous must prioritize what's important. Mark Zinno talked about the big decision that Anthopoulos has to make in order to improve his team down the stretch. Lastly, the Georgia Bulldogs gave Kirby Smart a contract extension because he was able to win a national championship for the city of Athens. Now, Smart has been very vocal about wanting the “Cocktail Party” moved out of Jacksonville and back to Athens and Gainesville. Mark Zinno talked about how he may not get what he wants just yet, but another national title may do the trick. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
Today's word of the day is ‘disclosure' as in hidden as in Freddie Freeman as in a report came out last night that Freddie Freeman's agent Casey Close had withheld the Atlanta Braves last offer to Freeman. Just insanity. There is no way this happened. There is no way Alex Anthopolous wouldn't reach out to Freeman. There is no way any of the Braves wouldn't have reached out to Freeman. So what is going on here? (16:15) So You Wanna Talk To Samson!? Someone asked me about the Tampa Bay Rays owner being sued again by his limited partners. You wanted to know if Stu Sternberg would be forced to sell. Hmmmmm. (32:35) Review: Leave No Trace. (37:35) NPPOD. (38:35) James Harden opted out of his $47M option. Why did he do this? The Sixers are going to pay him more money. Very simple. (42:20) What is the MLB Anti-Trust Exemption? What makes it so important? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Jon explains why he thinks Dansby Swanson won't be an Atlanta Brave in 2023, and discusses what he thinks it would take to keep Dansby Swanson in an Atlanta Braves uniform next season.
Phil Mickelson, after a four-month hiatus, is set to return to competitive golf, albeit on a "new path" and with a "fresh start" on the LIV Golf Invitational Series. Phil Mickelson's decision to join the LIV tour has rubbed a lot of people the wrong way. Mark Zinno warns them to be careful about where and when they choose to inject morality into sports. Secondly, Grant McAuley, of Braves Postcast/From the Diamond, joined A to Z with Mark Zinno to discuss the biggest reasons the Atlanta Braves are back above .500 and how they can stay there. Plus, Alex Anthopolous made the media rounds to help reassure the fan base that things were headed in the right direction. Lastly, Aaron Donald just signed a reworked deal that is worth a total of 95 million over the next three years. Donald is now super rich and looks to be ready to get back on the field. Also, Mark Zinno talks about the Denver Broncos being sold for $4.5 billion dollars. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
It really is strange that the SEC is struggling to figure out what to do with the scheduling going forward. The idea that the model for eight conference games is better than the 3-6 model which keeps the best rivalries together is laughable. Mark Zinno explains how the SEC should really push for a nine-game conference schedule. Secondly, Jake Gordon, of Sports Talk ATL, joined A to Z with Mark Zinno to discuss the Atlanta Braves. They started off by talking about the changes that need to be made to turn things around. Also, they discuss how Alex Anthopolous should handle the trade deadline at this point in trying to make this team better. Lastly, the Atlanta Falcons made an interesting announcement yesterday in regard to their uniforms for the 2022 season. The Falcons will wear their old-school red helmets later this season when they take on the San Francisco 49ers. As well, Mark Zinno explains they are offering a ticket package for teenagers which is smart and desperate all at the same time. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices
On this week's episode of Sportsfeld Storytime, we wrap up our look back at the Roy Halladay/AJ Burnett duel of 2009. This week, we're remembering the Roy Halladay trade, which saw him leave Toronto and head to Philadelphia where he would, of course, throw a no-hitter in his first playoff appearance. We then look back at Life After Doc, as Alex Anthopolous makes his first moves as GM, Jose Bautista becomes The God King, and Brett Lawrie leaps his way into our hearts.

Dukes and Bell close out hour four by chopping it up with another Braves Hall of Famer, World Series Champion, and Silver Slugger award winner in Chipper Jones! Chipper discusses the Braves amazing second half run to win the World Series, how this Championship for the Braves happened mainly because of the moves General Manager Alex Anthopolous made at the trade deadline, Freddie Freeman's continuing contract negotiations, what pitcher gave Chipper the most trouble when he was playing. and the MLB's ongoing lockout.
How about that AA, folks. He pulled all the right strings and pressed all the right buttons, and the Atlanta baseball team won the World Series. Makes you feel... something, right? That coulda been us! Alex Anthopolous could've gotten the Jays a World Series by now, right? Well.... it's hard to say. Should we even care about this? Are people watching sports wrong? It's finally off-season time! Unfortunately, since the Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire in December, this is more than likely going to be a looooooooong winter without any major transactions until later on. We talked about the CBA negotiations, what both sides are looking for, who's more likely to cave, and what it could mean for the Blue Jays. We also talked about Alex Anthopolous, who became the first Canadian general manager to win the World Series, and why it's perfectly OK to be happy for him while also being happy with where the Blue Jays are at with their current front office. Jon closes hour one of this Tuesday edition of The Jon Chuckery Show by talking with 92.9 The Game's own Atlanta Braves and Atlanta United insider Joe Patrick. Chuck starts off the interview by asking Joe what's been the issue with Atlanta United blowing two-goal leads in two straight matches. Joe responds by saying “They're kind of similar and kind of different.” Joe continues by saying “What happened last match was kind of an anomaly, so I will give them a longer leash for this match than I will with last match because last match they just didn't make adjustments when the other team started to make adjustments.” Joe also says “This team plays basically one on one the entire match so I think they're really tired.” Joe finishes his thought by saying “If you want to be a good team you have to be able to close out two goal leads.”Next, Jon asks Joe how much of the fatigue and blown leads are a product of substitutions. Joe responds by saying “I think you have to figure out what actually works and what doesn't.” Joe continues by saying “Gabriel Heinze is still learning about this team.” Joe also says “I've always looked at this as a two-year project.” Joe finishes his thought by saying “I think some of the issues you have mentioned and other people are talking about are the same issues Gabriel Heinze is still learning about.” Jon switches gears to the Braves, and wraps things up by asking Joe what he thinks about moving Ronald Acuna Jr. down in the lineup. Joe responds by saying “If the data is telling you that you might be able to create more runs by moving him down in the order instead of a spot where he's more comfortable and prefers hitting, would Alex Anthopolous and Brian Snitker be willing to make that move?” Joe continues by saying “This team better win the division because a wild card seems more out of reach than the division.” Joe finishes his thought by saying “Starting tonight this team has to be one of the best three teams in baseball if they want to even win the division.” See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Bring out the brooms, boys! For the first time in 2021, the Blue Jays have swept a series, and it came against an impressive opponent in Alex Anthopolous' Atlanta Braves. Party like it's 1992! We welcomed our good pal BK on this post-series episode and talked about how the lineup is finally firing on all cylinders with George Springer and Teoscar Hernandez back in the mix and whether or not this could be the start of a major run. We also talked about the most recent glut of injuries the team is facing, as Alejandro Kirk, Anthony Castro, and Tommy Milone went on the Injured List, while Springer is dealing with some kind of mysterious "fatigue" issue. Finally, we looked ahead to the four-game series coming up in Oakland, went up and down Toronto's minor-league affiliates and talked interesting things to watch from them this season, and then went off on a random discussion about baseball in Vancouver and which time zone is the best for sports. For 36 seasons he was the voice of the Blue Jays, along with his broadcast partner Tom Cheek and then several others until he elected to retire to lighten his load and focus more on his health. Jerry Howarth came to Toronto via Salt Lake City and Tacoma WA, a long way from California. Yet, Toronto for Jerry is home and we caught up with him today prior to his regular bridge game. Jerry sounds identical today to the old tapes you may find of him doing college football from the 1970's . More importantly, you can tell from spending just a few minutes with Jerry that he remains true to himself without wavering one bit.Jerry is personable, friendly and a pleasure to speak with. He remembers every detail as if it was yesterday always applying the lens of good family person first and then baseball second.Jerry shares his stories, thoughts and feelings about Toronto, playing in Canada vs. the United States, how he almost derailed a trade and his thoughts on how Alex Anthopolous exit was booted like a random infield grounder through Manny Lee's legs. No matter your age, you will remember fondly the voice that started every game with "Hello friends" and likely had a "There, she, goes" in it as a Blue Jay player went deep. With dire news around us, including today's grandstanding, chest thumping, bargaining by MLB Jerry will hopefully bring you back to a better time when games where, you know being played.
