He sings, he acts, he dances, and he shticks! It's the masterful Billy Crystal who has been a beloved presence on the standup and theater stage, on tv, and in movies since the 1970s. From a groundbreaking role on the ABC show "Soap" to joining a cast of heavy hitters to save Saturday Night Live to an amazing string of hit movies to an award winning Broadway show - - it would proably be easier to list what he hasn't done! As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Billy? Even if you have never seen one of Billy's movies, tv shows, theater appearances, or stand up gigs you almost certainly know him -- from his many appearances as the host of the Oscar telecast. Known for flamboyant entrances and gentle pokes, Billy's hosting spots still are held up as a gold standard for other hosts. Here's his monologue from the 1993 telecast. https://youtu.be/CF6fpn8Ts68 Soap was a revolutionary soap opera satire and Billy was part of the revolution, playing the first unambiguously gay characters on a prime time show -- with his customary affectionate irreverence. https://youtu.be/vudJivvHWqI After the original Saturday Night cast left in the late 70s the show floundered for a while, and it looked like it might be canceled. The call went out for a group of proven sketch comedy stars and Billy answered it. One of his breakout bits was as latin lothario Fernando Llamas hosting a talk show that had one thing on its mind -- looking Mahvelous! https://youtu.be/9NdcinOjbPI Billy was a legit leading man after a string of romantic comedy hits, but one of his most beloved roles is a small but pivotal one in The Princess Bride. Billy plays Miracle Max, a wizard of dubious skills, who reminds us a lot of Mel Brooks! https://youtu.be/d4ftmOI5NnI

New York Times bestselling author, J. Ryan Stradal, spoke to me about the unsurpassed passive aggressiveness of Midwesterners, writing about the restaurant industry during the pandemic, and his latest novel SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE LAKESIDE SUPPER CLUB. J. Ryan Stradal is the award-winning and New York Times bestselling author of Kitchens of the Great Midwest and national bestseller The Lager Queen of Minnesota, named one of the year's best books by NPR, USA Today, Booklist, and many others. His latest novel is Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club, described as “... a sharp and poignant tale of a couple from two different restaurant families in rural Minnesota – one has inherited her grandparents' old-fashioned supper club, and the other is heir to a chain of homestyle diners (known for putting those supper clubs out of business).” The book was named An Amazon Best Book of April 2023. New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay said of the novel, “This is a perfect book.” And in a starred review, Kirkus called it, “A loving ode to supper clubs, the Midwest, and the people there who try their best to make life worth living.” J. Ryan Stradal has also worked extensively in TV, story editing and producing shows for VH-1, MTV, ABC, FOX, TLC, A&E, Discovery, and History. Working primarily for Original Productions from 2008 to 2014, he was the senior story producer on “Deadliest Catch” and “Ice Road Truckers” and a supervising producer on "Storage Wars," and “Storage Wars: Texas.” [Discover The Writer Files Extra: Get 'The Writer Files' Podcast Delivered Straight to Your Inbox at writerfiles.fm] [If you're a fan of The Writer Files, please click FOLLOW to automatically see new interviews. Anne-with-an-e Shirley, a hallmark figure in children's literature, provides a formative childhood reading experience for many readers. An imaginative and loquacious orphan who finds home and community with the Cuthbert siblings at Green Gables of Avonlea, Anne is a feisty, feminine, and dramatically charming protagonist. In today's episode, we talk about how this sweet and endearing novel worked for us compared to other “warm hug” classics that missed the mark, the aspects of Anne's character that make her loveable and realistic, our favorite scenes from the book, and whether Montgomery's work can be considered feminist. Plus—our pairings today include a whimsical fairy story loosely based on the premise of Anne, as well as a novel that features another unforgettable protagonist from a Canadian author. We love discussing books and reading with all of you and hope you'll join our group of nerdy readers at patreon.com/novelpairings. Thank you for supporting the show! Beth Golay recently visited with the author of "Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club", J. Ryan Stradal about his love of the midwest, what exactly a supper club is, the burden of family pressures that parents pass on to their children, and more.
If you aren't seeing the world through the eyes of J. Ryan Stradal's fiction, you are missing out on something truly special. He writes largely about the Midwest, specifically the state of Minnesota as well as food and drink. That may sound limiting, but his talent is without limit and he fills his pages with themes of family and shared humanity. His newest is Saturday Night at the Lakeside Supper Club. It is the most personal journey he has ever taken. Take the ride with him, you won't be sorry. Our bookstore this week is Comma, a bookshop, (yes, both the word and the punctuation mark) a new bookstore in the Twin Cities that anyone who lives there should line up to visit. This is the fourth episode of a special 4-part takeover with cast & creatives from Hulu's new musical series UP HERE. Make sure to stream the entire 21 song UP HERE soundtrack everywhere you find your music. Andréa Burns is currently in the original musical comedy series, "Up Here" playing Rosie, a strong and supportive “Latin Jewish” mother. The actress lets us in on how she ended up in the show and talks about her childhood friendship with fellow actress, Katie Finneran. Being raised in movie musicals, she was always amazed at how you could use your singing voice to tell a story and describes musical theatre as one of the ultimate forms of expression. She speaks candidly about playing a homemade collection of Billy Porter's recordings in the delivery room as she was giving birth, the thrills of moving into New York to meet people and create something, and performing for the sake of performing, regardless of how a show is going to turn out. Andréa also talks about her latest role in "Up Here" and how she found familiarity with the character, Rosie. With the surge of musicals on tv and film, she reflects on its positive outcome, including reaching a wider, global audience to tell real human stories and make an emotional connection. Andréa Burns is an actress who's won a Drama Desk Award for her creation of the role of Daniela in the Tony Award-winning musical "In The Heights". Her other Broadway credits include "On Your Feet", "The Rose Tattoo", "Beauty and the Beast", and "The Full Monty" among others. She was in the original cast of "Songs for a New World" opposite Billy Porter, and was selected by Stephen Sondheim to create the role of Celeste in his musical "Saturday Night". She can be heard on the soundtracks for the film versions of "In The Heights", "Tick, Tick... Boom!", and "Vivo". Andréa's tv and film credits include "The Electric Company", "Jessica Jones", "West Side Story", and "Blue Bloods". Currently, she can be seen as Rosie in the original musical comedy series, "Up Here", streaming on Hulu.
