Perhaps the biggest downside of a losing college football season is the inevitability that staff changes are likely to be made. That moment has arrived at FAU. Tom Herman's announcement that he's parting ways with defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni & OL coach Ed Warriner is exiting the program are the first major consequences of a lost season that drew its last breath at East Carolina. Ken LaVicka breaks down the moves and the tangible numbers that may have led to Herman deciding that the "identity" of the defense needed to change. I feel like the luckiest broadcaster in college football. Every Saturday I get to stand at the 50-yard line and celebrate the greatest game on earth and attempt to coach the viewer. Those two thoughts have been at the core of my career. But to have any success at anything one must be taught, guided and mentored. Thankfully for me the men I've stood next to every weekend have done just that. But none more so than Ted Robinson. Ted has changed my life on air, off air and each Saturday while on Big Ten Network (or this weekend Fox Sports 1). His words of wisdom, encouragement and kindness are constantly working in my subconscious and the skills he taught me are hopefully used in real time each weekend.Thankfully for us at Y-Option and our founding partner 76, he's also in your world in today's podcast. The play-by-play voice of The CW joined me to talk about the Washington State Cougars, Oregon State Beavers and the state of college football. We take a deep dive into the growth of John Mateer, the leadership of Jake Dickert, the state of the Beavs and with the legendary Bill Walton's birthday this Tuesday, we celebrate that as well.Jim Thornby and I also detail this week's Go Go Go Awards, presented by 76 and play a game titled ‘Bowl or No Bowl' as we discuss the numerous teams that are on the cusp of bowl eligibility. If you're a fan of UW, Cal, Utah, OSU, USC, UCLA or Arizona this is a section you might enjoy.Back to prep, as Guy Haberman and I are calling the Iowa State vs. Kansas game at Arrowhead Stadium this weekend on FS1. Fun fact, I called that exact game in the Chiefs' stadium in 2010 where Tom Herman was the Iowa State OC. Time flies! Finally, the next few days will be stressful on many fronts so let's all lean into the joy in our lives and as fellow Substacker Dan Rather always says, ‘Stay Steady.'Much love,YogiThis episode is executive produced by Jim Thornby and edited by Victor Ren.This podcast is a Best Coast Media production.Y-Option: College Football with Yogi Roth is a reader-supported publication. Where does FAU Football go from here? Another 2nd half crumbling, this time at the hands of USF, who made sure it hurt. There's no doubt about this game's post-mortem, the defense in the final two quarters was a no-show. Not only did the defense never come back out of the halftime locker room, but it was demoralized into submission. And now that FAU needs to go perfect the rest of the way to become bowl eligible, it's likely time to start re-calibrating what constitutes a season "win" the rest of the way. Also, yes, the handshake drama between Tom Herman and Alex Golesh has become a major story. Ken explains why, ultimately, that testy exchange is validation for FAU. After he took a beating against Michigan State, the sustainability of QB Cam Fancher is a concern, especially to Tom Herman. The FAU head coach explains what steps they've taken to protect Fancher. Army's ultra-physical triple option offense is in the spotlight this weekend, so nobody better than former FAU defensive MVP Kris Bartels to break what the Owls must do to slow down the churning attack. Also, what is the latest from the Army camp? Black Knights play-by-play voice Rich DeMarco gives listeners a deep dive into not just this Army team but into the program as a whole. FAU vs. Michigan St College Football Betting Pick Prediction 8/30/2024 by Tony T. FAU at Michigan St 7PM ET—FAU was 4-8 last year for head coach Tom Herman in his third season with the school. The Owls return three starters on offense with eight to the defense. The team put up only 22.1 points per game last year with 3.5 yards per run. They completed 63.1% of their passes but an inefficient 6 yards per pass attempt. On defense the Owls held opponents to 26 points but 400 yards per game. They held opponents to 3.8 yards per rush but 64.9% completion rate and 248 yards passing per game. Many playmakers on offense exited via the portal. Cam Fancher will start at quarterback. The senior transfers from Marshall after completing 65.4% of his passes but threw 11 picks with his 11 touchdowns. He averaged 7 yards per pass attempt.

While everyone wants to talk about the FAU quarterback situation (which is now official, btw), most fans have amnesia when it comes to how much trouble the Owls had running the football. After the program's least productive year on the ground in over a decade, Tom Herman believes he has the running back room right. Why? They've, according to Coach Herman, made the most progress as a unit from the start of fall camp to the end and he believes he has the weapons to get FAU back to gaining on the ground, weapons with some fascinating stories. Also, freshman safety CJ Heard has received a prolific preseason honor. SUBSCRIBE to “The Florida Atlantic Voice” podcast: Spotify Apple Podcasts Follow Ken LaVicka on social media: X – @KLVsays

Part 2 of Ken LaVicka's two-part breakdown of everything that FAU Football head coach Tom Herman told assembled media at AAC Media Days in Arlington, TX. In this edition we take look at the how FAU is going to try to account for the loss of record-breaking production of LaJohntay Wester in that receiver room. Also, why Tom Herman compares FAU to UCF of a decade ago and Ken takes a look into what Herman discussed that provides the most hope for a winning 2024 campaign. Additionally, what challenges does AAC newcomer Army present and we look at how FAU has traditionally handled the service academies? Finally, why Tom Herman believes FAU has a better chance at the College Football Playoff than a majority of Power 4 schools, a reminder of just how dynamic a recruiter Herman is and why, while some of the teams in the AAC are different compared to his first go-around in the league at Houston, the ability to consistently win and help the league be the top Group of 5 conference remains similar. Dave Aranda and the Baylor Bears are still on the lookout for a new offensive coordinator to save Aranda's tenure as head coach. Baylor has indicated they are looking for a former head coach to take the offensive reigns. Three Texas legends who fit those criteria are Chad Morris, Major Applewhite and Art Briles. Morris led top 10 offenses under Dabo Swinney before a disastrous 22 game stint as the head coach at Arkansas. Applewhite is a Texas Longhorn QB legend, who also coached the likes of Vince Young and Colt McCoy before taking on the OC role under Tom Herman at Houston and eventually becoming the Cougars' head coach. Bo and the crew talk about if Lane Kiffin could leave Ole Miss, if Bobby Petrino is a tier one coach and who is at the top of the list for MSU in the second hour of the show live in the BankPlus Studio. The guys talk about the success of Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss and if he would leave Oxford for the right job. Bo talks about his tiers for possible coaches at MSU and if Bobby Petrino should be seen as a tier 1 option. Mississippi State insider Steve Robertson joins the show on the Farm Bureau guest line talking about the biggest stories with Mississippi State live in the BankPlus Studio. Steve talks about the list of home run hires and how there isn't as many this year as there has been. Steve looks at what Barry Odom has been able to do and how he depends on who his offensive coordinator is. Steve talks about how focusing on the defense in Starkville has proven successful and wonders if that could be replicated with someone else. Bo asks Steve about the Arkansas job staying closed and Steve thinks it's great for MSU in their search. Steve thinks it would be better to get a young ambitious coach instead of a seasoned older veteran to try to replicate the young version of Dan Mullen. Bo asks Steve if fans would accept hiring an offensive coordinator and Steve says it would have to be the right name for people to be happy. Steve thinks Florida Atlantic coach Tom Herman would be an interesting fit at MSU and wonders if he would be better than Texas State head coach GJ Kinne. Steve talks about the egg bowl this week and thinks the biggest weak spot for MSU will be the secondary vs the Ole Miss offense. Steve mentions that MSU basketball freshman Josh Hubbard was able to carry the team over the weekend and the talent he showed in the win. Out of Bounds is sponsored by BetterHelp. Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe are back to continue the discussion about the football program's offseason staff additions, specifically Payam Saadat. As Texas looks to develop a greater schematic edge, Saadat's background could help Pete Kwiatkowski add one of the final pieces he needs to get the defense to another level. Also, with the 2021 signing class in its third season in the program, it's worth looking at how good transition recruiting classes have been to the Longhorns. A class mostly put together by Tom Herman is also a reason why Steve Sarkisian can be confident about his squad heading into the 2023 season. You can get the latest Longhorn news and analysis at Horns247. The Horn, the flagship station for University of Texas athletics, currently airs Longhorn Blitz at 8 p.m. on Wednesdays. The Horn is also where Rod (3-7 p.m.) and Jeff (10 a.m.-12 p.m.) can be heard on the air daily. The Cover 3 assumes complete power to make changes in college football. First, reacting to Casey Thompson reuniting with Tom Herman at FAU (1:41), whether AP Top 25 voters should have requirements to participate in the poll (5:23) and expectations for the Wake Forest offense in the post-Sam Hartman era (11:50).
