Special NoteThe original video broadcast of this program can be found on the fantastic Wrestling With The 80's channel which you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4sdYyFWTXc&t=8448sI would also encourage you to subscribe to Ted's Takes On Wrestling, which you can find here: www.youtube.com/@TedsTakesWrestlingTed Turner, the swashbuckling billionaire owner of TBS, CNN and the Atlanta Braves had an incredible impact on the world of professional wrestling as well! Wrestling fans of the 80's remember making 6:05PM on the SuperStation appointment television as they watched their favourite grapplers battle it out first in Georgia Championship Wrestling then later on Jim Crockett Promotions World Championship Wrestling. In the 90's, after Turner's purchase of JCP, viewers were treated to one of the greatest eras to be a wrestling fan as the Monday Night War heated up thanks to WCW's groundbreaking Monday Nitro! But sadly, all good things must come to an end as the world of corporate mergers led to a power struggle and eventual ousting of Turner from the empire he created, the destruction of WCW and the end of wrestling on Turner Broadcasting. Tonight I am joined by Andy the Taxman from @GrapplingWithCanada and Ted Hill from @TedsTakesWrestling to discuss the legacy of Ted Turner and his indelible mark on professional wrestling! We're also going to be giving our thoughts and reactions to the epic four part Netflix documentary on Hulk Hogan. The good, the bad, the untrue and the unbelievable. Hogan left a legacy that can't be denied and even in death he is creating a stir in mainstream media. Please be sure to like, subscribe, rate and review! (Hopefully 5 Stars!!) Brothers and Sisters! Let us tell you the story of Love and Hate. H-A-T-E! It was with this left hand that old brother Cain struck the blow that laid his brother low. L-O-V-E! You see these fingers, dear hearts? The right hand, friends, the hand of love. Now watch, and we'll show you the story of being a movie fan. Old brother left hand Hate's a-fighting; there are many, many films that most folks hated and which have not, like other ignored-upon-release films, gone on to be cult classics. But wait a minute! Hot dog, Love's a winning! Yessirreee! It's Love that's won, and old left hand Hate is down for the count! For in this episode, brothers and sisters, Team Vintage Sand makes the case for why we love these films that just about everyone else hates. The nine films we've chosen to highlight could not be more different from one another. We reach all the way back to the 1940's and come all the way up to a film released just four years ago. We range from well-known directors like Paul Schrader, Ang Lee, and Arthur Penn to solid directors like George Roy Hill, Mark Robson, and Lasse Hallström, to a couple of directors whose obscurity is well-earned or whose reputation is yet to be determined by time. So beat the drums, ‘cause here comes our last episode before a summer interlude! Lastly, join us in a moment of silence for the late Ted Turner, who in spite of colorization and his ownership of the Atlanta Braves is one of our heroes, for TCM is a treasure that never stops giving to film fanatics like us. As for the coming summer, here's hoping that "Disclosure Day" is closer to "E.T." than to "A.I." , and that Nolan is somehow able to pull off "The Odyssey" (and that for once in a Nolan film, we can hear the dialogue over the music in the sound mix). Have a safe and peaceful break, and remember a great way to stay cool in the time of El Niño (both the weather phenomenon and the current political leadership ) is to go see movies in a real theater. Just saying…
The Guys are back to hear more from Kevin Ivey, a local boy of sorts who rose in the ranks from minimum wage editor/reporter at CNN to VP of Strategic Planning and Advanced Projects (or something even cooler than that.) In part 2 of Robbie's interview with Kevin, listeners get the inside scoop on Fidel Castro, who in turn gives his own inside scoop. From Meridian, MS to Ted Turner's box at Braves Stadium, it's an interview not to be missed. Art and Jay did get to come in and share their Geeks, though they may soon be replaced by Stan Lee. Spider-Noir is out and Jay likes what he sees so far. Robbie is looking forward to the new Spider Man movie, and is also thankful Tom Holland didn't get to pick the title. Come for the “Ivey Interview” part 2, stay for spider news!
The bison industry, and greater conservation movement, lost an icon with the passing of Ted Turner at the age of 87. On this episode, we honor his life and legacy with conversations featuring Jud Seaman of Quality Auction Services, Eva & Keith Yearout of Turner's Z-Bar Ranch, along with Dusty Hepper of Turner's Bad River Ranch.
In this episode, the boys discuss Daredevil, Maul, Punisher and the death of Ted Turner.
Now that The Dark Tower is out of the way, it's time to dive into perhaps author Stephen King's most well regarded book of stories -or novellas- Different Seasons. But before we get to Apt Pupil and Stand By Me, we review the adaptation of the first story in the volume, a little film called The Shawshank Redemption. With Rob Reiner (eventually) giving first time feature director Frank Darabont the chance to adapt the story (called Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption in the book), the film came out…and hit with a thud. That is, until that year's Oscar nominations and Ted Turner's network TNT got into the act. Suddenly, Shawshank was being played multiple times a year, exposing the film to dads everywhere, and eventually becoming the number one rated film on IMDB. Now, The Three Men and a Retrospective Podcast puts the Morgan Freeman/Tim Robbins film to the test! Will everyone, including noted King pessimist Adam, agree with the IMDB score? With Ted Turner's passing still in the rear-view mirror, Robbie reaches out to hometown friend Kevin Ivey. Not only did Ted Turner know Kevin by name, he also brought him into the CNN world when it was just coming into its own. This is a true behind-the-scenes, other side of the camera view of Turner's world. And there are stories. In fact, there are so many stories, The Guys had to break this one up into two episodes. And that, of course, means the loyal listeners get to hear two sets of Geeks of the Week! Jay sadly fails to save the universe, but he's not the only one. Art gives an address on addresses, and Robbie has news on the Supers. Listen to what will surely soon be known as the iconic “Ivey Interview” then come back for part 2 next week. There's a cliffhanger!

Just when you thought only Art brought the celebrity obits every week, this episode focuses on the media's recent loss of Captain Outrageous, the Mouth of the South…the inimitable Ted Turner. And lest any mourner be left out: the sailing world, Major League Baseball, and bison-lovers everywhere are also spilling tears into their dry vodka martinis at 5 minutes after every hour. Thanks to Turner's WTCG, which later became WTBS, The Guys in their young (ish) teenage years had the opportunity to watch almost every Braves game and cheer for the Goldar (the Space Giant) in his ongoing battle against Rodak. (Not to be confused with Polaroid's ongoing battle with Kodak.) Turner was controversial, but a legend in the media world, where nobody thought CNN would last. Ted may be gone, but he's not Gone with the Wind. Geeks of the week get a new spin this week: Jay goes first! A flopped Disney property gets a reboot, and Jay gets an explanation of why an entire section of Disney World was closed when he was there this year. Art is looking forward to the introduction of some guest singers on the new Rolling Stones album. And Robbie is sitting on the edge of his tomorrow again. Listen to this episode, watch a Turner Classic Movie, and have a nice day.
Ted Turner built CNN from scratch and changed how America consumes media — but what happened to him in his final years is something almost nobody talks about. Drug companies like Biogen spent $18 billion trying to crack the condition that took Turner down, and the FDA rejected their best shot twice. The answer might be simpler and cheaper than anyone expected. Road Trip After Hours w/ WWE Hall of Famer Teddy Long and Host Mac Davis
Wrestling has never had more athleticism, so why do so many matches feel like they slide right out of your memory? We dig into the uncomfortable answer: too many performers skip the fundamentals that make fans believe. Teddy Long brings the veteran lens on what changes a crowd from polite applause to real investment, and it starts with selling, pacing, and treating the job like it matters. We also talk about the respect gap between generations, and why ignoring experienced voices is one of the fastest ways to stall out a career. From character work to promo skills, we highlight what separates “good in the ring” from “can carry a show,” including a shout-out to Big Nasty Glenn as an example of someone who understands entertainment, presence, and making money beyond just bell-to-bell action. Mac Davis also shares why it was important to show his own wrestling history so newer audiences understand the full story. Then we open the mailbag and let your questions drive the ride: nostalgia about popsicles and ice cream trucks, tag team wrestling debates, Teddy's early days learning as a referee, WCW stories including meeting Ted Turner, and reflections on what “right for business” really means. Bobby and Alex discuss Noah Syndergaard's lackluster right-wing grift, including whether or not it's “hard” to be conservative in MLB. Then, they acknowledge that MLB and the MLBPA met for their first official bargaining session ahead of the expiration of the current MLB CBA, discussing whether there's anything that can be gleaned from the tone and tenor of bargaining this early in the process. Next, they assess the legacies of two huge figures in the baseball world who passed away over the last few weeks: Ted Turner, the larger-than-life owner of the Atlanta Braves, and John Sterling, the iconic Yankees radio broadcaster. That children who grow up without a father are five times more likely to live in poverty and commit crime; nine times more likely to drop out of school and 20 times more likely to end up in prison.” The Journal of Research on Adolescence confirms that even after controlling for varying levels of household income, kids in father-absent homes are more likely to end up in jail. And kids who never had a father in the house are the most likely to wind up behind bars. In 1960, 5 percent of America's children entered the world without a mother and father married to each other. By 1980 it was 18 percent, by 2000 it had risen to 33 percent, and fifteen years later, the number reached 41 percent. For blacks, even during slavery when marriage for slaves was illegal, black children were more likely than today to be raised by both their mother and father. Economist Walter Williams has written that, according to census data, from 1890 to 1940, a black child was more likely to grow up with married parents than a white child. For blacks, out-of-wedlock births have gone from 25 percent in 1965 to 73 percent in 2015. For whites, from less than 5 percent to over 25 percent. And for Hispanics, out-of-wedlock births have risen to 53 percent. What happened to fathers? The answer is found in a basic law of economics: If you subsidize undesirable behavior you will get more undesirable behavior. In 1949, the nation's poverty rate was 34 percent. By 1965, it was cut in half, to 17 percent -- all before President Lyndon Johnson's so-called War on Poverty. But after that war began in 1965, poverty began to flat line. From 1965 until now, the government has spent over $20 trillion to fight poverty. The poverty rate has remained unchanged, but the relationship between poor men and women has changed – dramatically. That's because our generous welfare system allows women, in effect, to marry the government. And this makes it all too easy for men to abandon their traditional moral and financial responsibilities. Psychologists call such dependency "learned helplessness." How do we know that the welfare state creates disincentives that hurt the very people we are trying to help? They tell us. In 1985, the Los Angeles Times asked both the poor and the non-poor whether poor women "often" have children to get additional benefits. Most of the non-poor respondents said no. However, 64 percent of poor respondents said yes. Now, who do you think is in a better position to know? Tupac Shakur, the late rapper, once said: "I know for a fact that had I had a father, I'd have some discipline. I'd have more confidence." He admitted he began running with gangs because he wanted the things a father gives to a child, especially to a boy: structure and protection. “Your mother cannot calm you down the way a man can,” Shakur said. “You need a man to teach you how to be a man." SEASON 4 EPISODE 84: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (3:00) SPECIAL COMMENT: Back from a week off just in time to put the podcast on health hiatus...details within today's supersized edition. Plus, befitting the time off, some meta pictures on how Democrats should plan for what they want this country to look like on its 300th anniversary, if it lasts that long. Will we have jailed Trump and gotten back the money he took? Undone his damage? Eliminated the anachronistic idea that Wyoming should have as many senators as California? Let the Supreme Court continue to lie, cheat and steal the democracy from under us? As John Candy said in "Splash": Think big, be big, my friend. MORE IMMEDIATELY: Whaddya mean the Governor of Virginia hasn't been BRIEFED on the way to overturn her state's Supreme Court's usurpation of redistricting? Why the hell not Hakeem Jeffries? Anybody notice Trump is simply rotating the same three lies about Iran? Why are only independent journalists like Garrett Graff still covering the WHCD non-shooting when the New York Times is doing 31 paragraphs on the future of the dinner like anybody gave a crap? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: stop saying Trump is painting everything GOLD. That color is not GOLD. It is the color of WEE WEE. Say it. Use the clinical terms, use the gutter terms. The gutter terms define this idiot president. Stop saying gold when you mean whizzzzzzzzzzzzzz. B-Block (56:00) ON THE PASSING OF TED TURNER: Hard to believe few of the obituaries mentioned how he also invented 7-day-a-week sports on national television. Or how Jane Fonda kept him from destroying himself in, like, 1982. One particularly harrowing saga had him telling the lowest ranking staffer at CNN's Washington Bureau which way, when he finally decided he'd do it, he'd do it. And this is said with admiration and affection for the man who created the place where I and so many of the figures of the last 45 years began our TV careers. C-Block (1:30:00) ALL TED ALL THE TIME: I was holding back until I was certain I wouldn't jinx him. My beloved first rescue dog, Ted, was up against it last fall. I took him to the University of Florida for life-saving open heart surgery and boy, did they! Eight hours on the table, eight hours of SICU, all for an eight pound dog and now - he's not even on any medications! It's a long story and I would insist it's worth hearing it. And if you have a dog (or know of one) moving from Mitral Valve Disease to Heart Failure, maybe this will provide you with hope - and an option.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
RUNDOWN Mitch and Hotshot dive into the growing obsession surrounding Mariners prospects Cade Anderson and Colt Emerson, debating the impossible question every fan wrestles with: when is a young star actually "ready"? Mitch argues the bigger story right now might be the excitement around the kids in the minors rather than the inconsistent big-league club itself. The Mariners No-Table crew reacts to Seattle wasting another opportunity to gain ground in the AL West after dropping a series to the White Sox, with the conversation centering on Cal Raleigh's brutal slump, a lineup that can't hit with runners in scoring position, and whether the offense is fundamentally flawed. Joe Doyle questions whether Rob Refsnyder's roster spot is already in jeopardy, while Brady Farkas warns the team is running out of time to keep calling these stretches "frustrating." Christian Caple joins Mitch to break down the strange reality of opening the season with the Apple Cup, why the Demond Jr. Williams NIL saga probably won't matter unless he struggles, and whether fans are already primed to overreact to every interception. They also dig into Washington's biggest roster questions — especially at running back after Adam Mohammed's departure — plus why Jedd Fisch is betting heavily on young talent instead of portal mercenaries. Derek Berg joins Mitch to talk about the long, winding golf journey that finally landed him in the PGA Championship at age 44 — from getting dropped off at Carnation Golf Course as a kid to grinding through mini tours, teaching lessons, and surviving years of close calls at the PGA Professional Championship. It's a candid, emotional conversation about chasing a dream long after most people would've quit. Today's word of the day is ‘superstation' as in Ted Turner as in TBS as CNN as TNT as in Cartoon Network as in the Atlanta Braves. Turner was a media titan. He won a World Series in 1995 in his final year of owning the Braves. He was philanthropic. He was a great man. (7:40) The Knicks got in done again. Up 2-0 on the 76ers and two wins away from an Eastern Conference Final. The Sixers played without Joel Embiid. Never healthy. The Spurs came back in Game 2 and just dominated the Timberwolves. Just another level of beatdown. (17:12) Is Luka going to come back for the playoffs? He has a very bad hamstring tear. He went to Spain for PRP injections. This was an 8 week injury. It's only been 5 weeks. (30:00) Review: I Love LA. (32:30) We are in the baseball twilight zone right now. The NL Central is on top of the baseball world. The American League looks like the upside down. Only the Yankees and Rays are above .500! (41:30) Let's take a look at the ERA leaders this season. It is quite the list.
