Welcome to Episode #64 of the No Conference for Old Men podcast. Like last season, it was a mixed bag for Houston at the Players Era Festival.  With lots of "wisdom and learnings," as Coach Sampson likes to say, the team won two games against Syracuse and Notre Dame. But the Coogs also suffered a close loss to a Tennessee team seeking payback for last season's Elite 8 loss.  The Cougars are now 7-1 for the season and are ranked #7 in the coaches poll, #8 in the AP poll, and #9 in KenPom.  There's been plenty of time to work on the issues during this 10-day break before facing FSU at the Toyota Center. The SEC Coaching Carousel spun wildly over the weekend. Lane Kiffin is the new coach at the LSU Tigers, Pete Golding it's promoted as his replacement at the Ole Miss Rebels. Tulane coach Jon Sumrall is on his way to coach the Florida Gators. Ryan Silverfield is the new coach at Arkansas and Kentucky has fired Mark Stoops. Friday, The Texas Longhorns knocked The Texas A&M Aggies out of the SEC Championship with a 27-17 win in Austin. Texas A&M Football is in the College Football Playoffs while Texas Football likely will not be, though many argue they should have a spot. The Georgia Bulldogs beat the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 16-9 in Atlanta. Georgia Football finishes 11-1 and faces Alabama in Saturday's SEC Championship. The Ole Miss Rebels beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs 38-19 in the Egg Bowl Friday in Starkville. The loss ends the season for Mississippi State Football. For Ole Miss Football, the drama only began with the win. Head coach Lane Kiffin left Sunday for the LSU Tigers head coaching job. The Oklahoma Sooners saved their Playoff lives with a 17-13 win at home over the LSU Tigers. Oklahoma Football scored with 4:16 to go to hold off LSU Football and hold their Playoff spot. The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the Michigan Wolverines 27-9. Ohio State Football solidifies their spot in the Big Ten Championship Game and holds their #1 spot in the College Football Playoff rankings. In the win, Alabama Football rushed for eight touchdowns, the most in a game since the Bryant era. Is there anything positive Alabama can take from that performance? Alabama fans: What is your pucker meter for a night Iron Bowl at Jordan Hare? The Auburn Tigers beat Mercer 62-17. Auburn Football gave quarterback Deuce Knight his first start and Knight did not disappoint. The Auburn QB took advantage of the overwhelmed Bears defense with four rushing TDs and threw for two more. Does Knight's play give you hope for Auburn's future? Auburn fans: Do you think you will use Deuce Knight in the Iron Bowl? Also, is there a chance Hugh Freeze was playing Auburn's third best QB this season? The Oklahoma Sooners took another step towards the College Football Playoffs with a 17-6 win over the Missouri Tigers. Oklahoma Football is now a win over LSU away from getting in the 12-team field. For Missouri Football, they must win over Arkansas to avoid a 7-5 season. The Texas Longhorns smashed the Arkansas Razorbacks 52-37.
