In questo podcast – quarto episodio della docuserie “Il Mossad. Successi e fallimenti del più grande e temuto servizio segreto al mondo” – l'analista strategico Gianluca Ansalone (Docente di Geopolitica al Campus Biomedico di Roma-Università di Roma Tor Vergata) racconta la vicenda di Ashraf Marwan, imprenditore, agente segreto e politico egiziano. Chiamato in codice “Angelo”, Ashraf Marwan, genero dell'ex presidente egiziano Gamal Abdul Nasser, avvertì il Mossad che la Guerra dello Yom Kippur stava per scoppiare. Il giorno prima dello scoppio della guerra, Marwan aveva avvertito Zvi Zamir, allora capo del Mossad, che “c'è il 99% di possibilità che la guerra inizi domani… inizierà contemporaneamente su entrambi i fronti, quello egiziano e quello siriano”. Marwan disse a Zamir che gli egiziani avevano intenzione di lanciare un massiccio sbarramento di artiglieria e di “spostare quasi tutto l'esercito attraverso il Canale di Suez”. Gli disse anche che i siriani “avevano intenzione di catturare le alture del Golan”. Gli avvertimenti furono ampiamente ignorati dai leader politici e militari e l'attacco colse Israele di sorpresa. Il 27 giugno 2007, Marwan precipita dal balcone del quarto piano di un elegante palazzo di Londra. Non è mai stato stabilito con certezza se sia caduto o se sia stato spinto. Le autorità egiziane organizzarono un grande funerale acclamando Marwan come un eroe. Nel 2018 Netflix ha trasmesso il film “The Angel”, che mette in luce il ruolo di Marwan nella guerra. In this episode of the podcast, I spoke with Professor Uri Bar-Joseph who is a professor of political science at the University of Haifa, an expert on Israeli intelligence, and the author of the book The Angel: The Egyptian Spy Who Saved Israel. His book was recently adapted to a Netflix movie called The Angel and tells the story of Ashraf Marwan, who was the son in law of Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser and ultimately ended up playing a key role in the 1973 Yom Kippur War becoming one of the greatest spies in modern history.
