She was chief of staff to President Reuven Rivlin and a senior fellow at the Jewish Public Policy Institute; now she is chief of staff to the mayor of Bet Shemesh.Rivka is intimately involved in the personal and political sphere of Haredi life—a focus of her PhD, which she is pursuing at Haifa University. Now, she joins us to answer 18 questions on Israel, including Israeli politics, the Haredi draft, and Israel as a religious state. This interview was held on Sept. 24.Here are our 18 questions:As an Israeli, and as a Jew, how are you feeling at this moment in Israeli history? What has been Israel's greatest success and greatest mistake in its war against Hamas? How have your religious views changed since Oct. 7? What do you look for in deciding which Knesset party to vote for?Which is more important for Israel: Judaism or democracy?Should Israel treat its Jewish and non-Jewish citizens the same? Now that Israel already exists, what is the purpose of Zionism? Is opposing Zionism inherently antisemitic?Should Israel be a religious state? If you were making the case for Israel, where would you begin?Should all Israelis serve in the army? Can questioning the actions of Israel's government and army — even in the context of this war — be a valid form of love and patriotism? What do you think is the most legitimate criticism leveled against Israel today?Do you think the State of Israel is part of the final redemption? Is Messianism helpful or harmful to Israel?Do you think peace between Israelis and Palestinians will happen within your lifetime?Where do you identify on Israel's political and religious spectrum, and do you have friends on the “other side”?Do you have more hope or fear for Israel and the Jewish People?

The Burn Bag does not officially endorse any views expressed by our guests, but rather brings those perspectives to you, the audience, and will continue to provide a diverse array of voices on the program. In this episode, A'ndre introduces Uri Bar-Joseph, professor emeritus at Haifa University and author of the new book Beyond the Iron Wall. Together, they delve into the security failures that led to the October 7th attacks, considering why Israel's security apparatus was caught off guard and what lessons can be drawn from historical events like the Yom Kippur War. Uri argues that Israel does not have an overarching  strategy in its War in Gaza nor with its actions in Lebanon. Uri discusses the complexities of Israel's "security lifestyle," his reactions to the recent pager attacks targeting Hezbollah, the Israeli government's perceptions of Hamas, and the broader political landscape. Uri also talks about why he believes the Israeli government is averse to political resolutions and the challenges posed by settlements in the West Bank, in addition to his criticisms of Benjamin Netanyahu's handling of the war and the broader Israeli-Palestinian relationship. This insightful conversation aims to unpack the reasons behind recent events and ponder the future of Israeli-Palestinian relations.NOTE: This episode was recorded on September 19, several days before the escalation in Southern Lebanon.

She is the producer of Iranian Progressives in Translation and socialistfeminism.org.Editor's Note (12/13/23): At multiple points in the conversation, the panelists refer to the accusations that Hamas fighters committed acts of mass sexual violence during the Oct. 7 attacks. While Israeli officials and media outlets have repeatedly affirmed the veracity of these accusations, Israel has not provided requested information to journalists and even to officials at the United Nations attempting to independently investigate and verify the accusations. As Mondoweiss reported on Dec. 8, 2023, “Lurid stories of gang rape, mutilation, and even necrophilia, have been disseminated by the media. This has occurred despite there being no substantive developments in evidence of sexual assaults from the Israeli occupation forces. Israel has repeatedly failed to provide forensic evidence, concrete photographic evidence, or victim testimonies to news organizations beyond inferences made by Israel's forensic teams. Indeed, the Times of Israel alleges that the IOF will never provide forensic evidence because ‘physical evidence of sexual assault was not collected from corpses by Israel's overtaxed morgue facilities,' and it is now, reportedly, too late to collect conclusive evidence… Israel's secrecy remains deafening; the IOF exclusively screened a 47-minute compilation of ‘raw footage' to invited journalists, as opposed to sharing the footage with news agencies to report on and verify independently (Al Jazeera journalists, notably, were not invited to attend). Amongst those invited, journalist Owen Jones saw no ‘conclusive evidence' for torture, sexual violence, rape, or beheadings. Furthermore, despite calling on the UN to condemn Hamas's acts of sexual violence, Israel refuses to cooperate with a UN commission of inquiry into sexual violence committed by Hamas on the ludicrous basis that the UN has ‘an anti-Israel bias.'” Due to the dearth of such evidence provided to journalists by Israeli officials, TRNN can neither confirm nor deny the substance of these allegations.Studio / Post-Production: David HebdenHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer:Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

After five days of exchanging blows, Israel and the minor but well-equipped Gaza-based organization Palestinian Islamic Jihad stopped this particular round, another in a seemingly endless series. As expected, both sides issued self-serving claims of victory. Obviously, propaganda and politics aside, they each have different standards by which to measure their respective balances, as does the major force in Gaza, Hamas - but what are the more objective lessons learned from this confrontation, in the military and diplomatic realms? Episode: In this episode, Kyle and Chris chat with Shlomit Bechar of Haifa University about her recent book Political Change and Material Culture in Middle to Late Bronze Age Canaan (Eisenbrauns 2022). We tackle the topic of how changes in the material culture relate to political events (in particular the expulsion of the Hyksos from Egypt and Thutmose III's campaign to Canaan), the excavations at the mega-site of Hazor, the challenges in defining archaeological periods, literary archives in Hazor, and we even hear about Kyle almost finding the long-sought archive at Hazor. We also hear about Shlomit's new project excavating in the lower city of Hazor. Guest: (from the Univ. Haifa website) Shlomit Bechar is a senior lecturer at the School of Archaeology and Maritime Cultures at the University of Haifa. She is the director of the excavations in the Lower City of Tel Hazor in the Upper Galilee. Shlomit specializes in ceramic analysis to ask questions relating to social differentiation, interconnections between different cultures, trade relations, economic change and challenges, and more recently to identify methods of resilience to climate change. She combines the study of pottery and architecture with geochemical and geophysical aspects, environmental considerations, economic processes and the wider socio-political context, while leading and joining several interdisciplinary research projects. Her current projects examine the interactions between humans and environment in wetlands, focusing on the inland wetland of the Hula Lake, identify the creation of memory and narratives through archaeology, and study the daily life of people in the Middle and Late Bronze Age.

For the last 17 years, Israel has been out of the Gaza District, having unilaterally left it under Palestinian rule. For 15 of those years, Hamas has controlled this jam-packed narrow territory and its two million inhabitants. And for 11 of those, the leader of Hamas and therefore of Gaza has been Yahya Sinwar, a tough operative Israel was forced to release from jail in a prisoner exchange deal. Hamas is careful not to trigger another major Israeli operation against it, but Sinwar has inspired terror attacks by individuals penetrating Israeli cities from the West Bank. And part of the frustrated public response was a call for Israel to renew the tactic of assassination, targeting Sinwar in particular. March 15th is indeed the Ides of March in Syria. Mars, the God of War, descended on Syria on this date eleven years ago and has never left, though he is also busy in Ukraine and other places. Earlier this month, representatives of the United States, the United Nations, Arab and European countries called once again for a ceasefire, humanitarian measures to alleviate suffering, war crimes proceedings and above all - a political power-sharing settlement, but there seems to be little progress, as Assad and his sponsors insist on purging remaining pockets of resistance to the regime. The Human Founder

Orna is a significant figure in the Israeli high tech ecosystem - the first woman to serve as Chief Scientist and Head of the Industrial R&D operation of the Israeli Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. She was Vice President of Dell EMC & General Manager of Israel Center of Excellence, and an entrepreneur & business figure in Israeli companies like PrimeSense, Aladdin & Alvarion. Nowadays, she is the Director of Technology at Google Cloud CTO's Office. The American technology magazine Red Herring ranked her as "one of the 25 most influential and important women in the world of technology for 2005".   Orna is the daughter of Yoash Tzidon, former IAF pilot, her mom was a nurse and she has 2 brothers - one is a professor of Economy and the other - a lawyer. Her family was always her source for strength, decency and commitment, and it led her through her career to a meaningful contribution by creating diverse opportunities. Technology was always in their house.    Orna received MA and BA degrees in Statistics and Mathematics from Tel Aviv University and Haifa University, respectively. In 1980, she joined the University of Southern California (USC) in the United States and earned a PhD in Computer Science in 1986.   After a career in several tech companies, in 1993 she co-founded ORNET - Data Communication Technologies, in Carmiel - she wanted to bring the business into the periphery of Israel. Already then, Orna wanted to recruit diverse employees & talents. Orna took part in growing the VC sector in Israel, and for her - it was always about creating great partnerships with great people and being curious.    “I'll die from curiosity. I'm always trying new stuff. I could not envision the technological developments. I could not envision the market's development. I could not envision leaving the academy and I could not envision that I'll become Chief Scientist.”   Orna sold Ornet to Siemens in 1995.    They approached her to become Chief Scientist twice and she said no - then they pulled the Zionism card, and it worked. She got divorced that year, getting out of a domestic violence relationship. She asked her children for their opinion, and her daughter Yael said: “In this house everyone does what she wants”. And that paved the way for a personal and professional change. With her children, the rules were part of the “enablement game”  - allowing each other to grow and develop through a strong partnership - as they are in it together.    Orna remembers she took a day off to celebrate her daughter's birthday, but then there was an emergency call from Sheba hospital's COO - Zeev Rotstein. So she brought her daughter with her and it ended in forming new initiatives for Rambam & Sheba.   She then spent 10 years at Gemini VC working with outstanding people. She learned she only loves working with people who want to work with her and accept who she is.  In her recent 72nd b-day, her son, Amit, reflected to her  -”you never try to please anyone”. That is a meaningful reflection that has led Orna throughout her career. She always believed equality comes from people who work shoulder to shoulder.   She made another change - when she was 61+1 day - Leading the EMC excellence center in Israel. Couple of months ago - she stepped into her new position at Google Cloud.   It was 2015, when she discovered she had cancer, and it was a “death sign on the wall”. She understood she's going to face a difficult time and many struggles. Her HMO did not want to approve the drug she needed, and later - although they say “the patient is in the center '' - it doesn't seem nor feel that way. As a scientist - she understands how crucial it is to make the data accessible and draw a holistic view of the patient. Every struggle she wins - she teaches the voluntary bodies the tricks - so they can help others.   When I asked her - what would the mature Orna say to the young one - she smiled, thought of her teenage grandchildren and said: “focus on your capabilities, desires and in each step also think of the society to create a greater good”.

Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week a crazy interesting study is published in the Tel Aviv archaeological journal called “The Pentateuchal Dietary Proscription against Finless and Scaleless Aquatic Species in Light of Ancient Fish Remains.” It was co-authored by Ariel University's Dr. Yonatan Adler and Haifa University's Prof. Omri Lernau; we're speaking with Adler. Finless and scaleless fish are prohibited in the Bible, in both Leviticus and Deuteronomy. It appears in both books just after pig is forbidden from consumption. But it seems it was much less observed throughout the land and ages. In the newly released study, the pair of scholars examine all known evidence of fish remains from ancient Judah over the period of some 2000 years to see if the common everyday Judean was actually following this particular Torah law, and if so, from when. This study is part of Adler's Origins of Judaism project, which examines all sorts of Torah laws, including purity, figurative art, and dietary prohibitions, and looks for concrete evidence for them.
