Issue 67! David is back and we are talking more X-Men! It's the Joss Whedon one. So yeah, it gets weird. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/noneofmyfriendslikecomics/support
Connor Goldsmith of the Cerebro podcast comes on the show to analyze the motion comic adaptation of Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, written by Joss Whedon and illustrated by John Cassaday. This means we analyze all of Joss Whedon's work up to the source comic's original debut in 2004, meaning full spoilers for Buffy, Angel, and even a little bit of Dollhouse and Firefly/Serenity chat. Since Connor's here, we also ask him about his thoughts on Scott/Jean/Emma/Logan, his least favorite X-Men comics, his MCU and Agents of SHIELD opinions, and soooo much more. Find Connor's work and podcast at connorgoldsmith.com. The Wolverine anime didn't let us down this week, because this episode has plot points that all follow logically and make sense. We get some character development for Yukio, some goofy antics from Hideki's lackeys (all of whom are Wolverine fanboys, apparently), and an ominous description of what our heroes might face on Hell Road, the "shortcut" to the Dragon Palace. This show might actually be getting good in its home stretch, or at least passable, but we're still taking a break from reviewing it next week to do something else extra-special. In this episode, we explore one of the best portrayals of the X-Men ever put to paper. My personal favorite X-Men run begins with a bang (or an optic blast, a diamond skinned punch, an adamantium clawed slash, etc. ) as the OG mutant superheroes pull their team and their school back together to once again protect a world that hates and fears them. If you're looking for peak X-team characterization, look no further than Whedon and Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men. Joining me for this episode is fellow comic book junkie, Jalen Rodriguez. We explore not only the contents of this great book and how it highlights the X-Men's strengths, but also our own relationships with the X-Men and how much comic books mean to us. He's a great guy and it's a thoughtful and honest conversation about comics. Also, if you listen to this podcast while doing the Macarena, you've somehow already mastered the art of time travel. Tell me how you did that. TELL ME.

Issues 1-6 Gifted "The first story arc focused on the introduction of several key characters and their involvement on the team. Whedon introduced a "mutant cure" designed by Indian Benetech scientist Dr. Kavita Rao, who was secretly sponsored by warrior alien Ord. The prospect of "real" humanity arouses the interest of a heavily mutated Beast, who visits Rao only to discover that the drug is the product of illegal human experimentation on an unknown victim. The X-Men raid Benetech and reunite with Colossus. With Colossus's help, the team takes down Ord, but not before it's revealed that a mutant (most likely an X-Man) would destroy Ord's home planet, the Breakworld, within the next three years." We've decided that Astonishing X-Men: Gifted is a must-read comic book, but what about the follow-up? DC Comics has finally released Showcase, their black and white answer to Marvel's Essentials line of TPBs, and they're so awesome! And we answer some feedback.
