POPULARITY
This week, we're taking up arms against the British and making moves on our dead wife's sister as we get downright independent with 2000's The Patriot, directed by Roland Emmerich, and starring Mel Gibson, Heath Ledger, Jason Isaacs, Tom Wilkinson, Joely Richardson, Chris Cooper, Rene Auberjonois, Donal Logue, Adam Baldwin, Gregory Smith and a young Logan Lerman. Try as we might to tie into this week's release of Alex Garland's Civil War, this is a war epic about the War of Independence, and just like Independence Day, when America needed a rousing, slightly fascistic display of patriotism via action cinema, you need the propagandist touch that can only come from a German. This movie is also nearly three hours long, so needless to say, Hayley hated it. Meanwhile J Mo's got a theatrical field report on Sydney Sweeney's latest, Immaculate, and Hayley's getting down with some crunchy sugar cereals. Other works discussed on this episode include The First Omen, The Omen, The First Purge, The Purge, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Dark Side of the Ring, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Ghostbusters (2016), Isle of Dogs, The French Dispatch, Asteroid City, The Royal Tenenbaums, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Moonfall, Small Soldiers, Zodiac, Full Metal Jacket, Firefly / Serenity, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, The Princess Diaries, Waterworld, Escape From New York, the music of Queens of the Stone Age, Ima Robot and Diana Ross & The Supremes, and the video games Spider-Man: Miles Morales and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. We'll be back next week as we stay in the early 2000s with a completely different type of picture: the 2004 rom-com Along Came Polly, an unseen selection from Hayley's collection that packs a dynamite supporting performance from Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you'd like to watch the movie along with us it is currently streaming on Starz in Canada at the time of publication. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!
As the title suggests in this episode, we'll be discussing Joss Whedon's infamously cancelled cult classic show Firefly (and accompanying Serenity film) giving our thoughts and feelings.
Connor Goldsmith of the Cerebro podcast comes on the show to analyze the motion comic adaptation of Astonishing X-Men: Gifted, written by Joss Whedon and illustrated by John Cassaday. This means we analyze all of Joss Whedon's work up to the source comic's original debut in 2004, meaning full spoilers for Buffy, Angel, and even a little bit of Dollhouse and Firefly/Serenity chat. Since Connor's here, we also ask him about his thoughts on Scott/Jean/Emma/Logan, his least favorite X-Men comics, his MCU and Agents of SHIELD opinions, and soooo much more. Find Connor's work and podcast at connorgoldsmith.com. Thank you to everyone who sent in questions for the Firefly/Serenity wrap-up episode this week! The gang talks character arcs that were and character arcs that could have been. Listen next week for a movie break: "Repo! The Genetic Opera". Then, onwards to Angel!
Hello and welcome to the last little bit of Firefly content, Serenity! This week, the gang dips into the film that ended it all. With a 50% mortality rate and some creative liberties being taken with character development, how does this stack up to the story we have been experiencing over the last few months? Send us your questions for the Firefly/Serenity wrap-up next week because we have some stuff to talk about. Thanks, as always, for listening!
Did the primary buffer panel just fall off my gorram ship for no reason? Firefly week reaches its conclusion as we break down the 2005 Film Serenity, based on the cult TV series Firefly. Joe and Mark are joined by special guest Shawn Allred of CheapSeatReviews. Serenity rose from the ashes of what many assumed was a very unfortunate death at the hands of Fox. Luckily for fans, Joss Whedon (before becoming the Justice League monster we know today) would go to Universal to make a pitch for why the story should continue. Join Joe, Mark, and Shawn as they break down the movie's themes, how it brilliantly incorporates threads from the TV series, and some of their own personal theories on the plotholes that fans often ask themselves. “Joss Whedon keeps creating these zeitgeist-grabbing, fun, brilliant shows that then Fox — It’s like he hands them over to an angry punk that throws them against the wall and ruins them.” - Patton Oswalt Without further ado, Here’s part 2 of TBC’s trip into the black that is Firefly/ Serenity. For the fans, there is always hope of revival, that somehow Joss Whedon’s space western crew will fly again. And yet, although cancelled prematurely by the executive at FOX, Firefly/ Serenity remains now and foreverfanboy legend. #IfIeverkillyouyoullbeawakeyoullbefacingmeandyoullbearmed #Shestornupplentybutshellflytrue

We stage it to look like a suicide caused by the unjust cancellation of Firefly. We're gonna get that show back on the air…” - Troy (Donald Glover), NBC’s Community. Thus we enter the ‘verse of Firefly aka Serenity, Joss Whedon’s short lived yet highly praised space western (FOX 2002-2003), considered a cornerstone masterpiece by sci-fi-fi genre lovers. The fans, aka Browncoats, unprecedentedly rallied and were rewarded with a full feature cinematic film post cancellation. Like Star Trek, Firefly/ Serenity sparked a renaissance of the fan driven trend in entertainment intellectual property. It's finally happened. Shana has convinced Daniel to start podcasting Joss Whedon. They start with what is probably his most interesting series, Firefly, and will be doing all the episodes of the series plus the theatrical film over the next few months. In this episode then, they discuss the two-part pilot "Serenity," introduce all the major characters, and discuss the use of gender within the show. Daniel picks a few bones with worldbuilding, and sets out the general complaint that the series' Western setting (along with the military background of two of its main characters) implies a connection to the American Confederacy that the show never really deals with authentically. It's going to be a very controversial ride. Main Topic: Serenity. Hirsute and handsome. Shana versus Daniel. Whedonite. Introductions. Pandering. History with Buffy. History with Firefly. Lexx and Cleopatra 2525. Fan cultures. "Walt Whitman is 'feel my manliness?'" Characters. Sitcom writing. "Han Solo The Series." Two introductions. Needing a male counterpart. Zoe should shoot Mal in the face. First and last. Comic book structure. "Like a Civil War kinda?" Pacing. Adorable Alan Tudyk. "Star Wars Meets Country Buffy." Chinglish. Earthy, dirty, sweet, feminine Kaylee. The fragile masculinity of Captain Tightpants. The de-virginator. Heinlein. A failure of worldbuilding. Book defined by his sexuality and moral compass. What is worldbuilding? Badger. Strawberries. The Tams. Kitchen. Ooh, subplot! Kaylee/Inara. Sex and the City? Prayer. Mal an alternative model of masculinity? Ritualistic bathing. The Patriarch says it's okay. Kaylee gets shot. Peckinpah. Out of chaos River is born. The innocent savage. A more interesting story. Attractive Simon. Conflating intelligence with morality. Join Shawn and Scott as they breakdown "Serenity", not the feature film, but the true pilot for the cult sci-fi series that was canceled much to soon: "Firefly". Listen as they discuss what made this different from other works of science fiction, why FOX actually aired the pilot episode last, the unique fusion of American and Chinese cultures found throughout the series, and much more! They'll also talk about the great characters, the parallels that can be drawn to the American Old West, the attention to detail in the show's look, the excellent writing by creator Joss Whedon, and why lawn chair technology evidently hasn't changed in 500 years. So sit back, gnaw on a nutritional immunization bar and enjoy this episode like a strawberry. Ooh grandpa! ***Spoiler warning: there is a semi-cryptic Firefly/Serenity spoiler at the end (when Jen tells Nathan Fillion's joke) so skip that if you haven't seen it and feel strongly about spoilers.*** Welcome to our third episode! We hope you are enjoying this as much as we are (or even a fraction of that amount is pretty good!)! This week, the geeky ladies of Indoorswomen discuss television! Our segments are "TV to fold laundry to" - our favorite police procedurals, reality game shows, and other rewatchables - and "New Fall TV" - we try out Scream Queens, Minority Report, Limitless, The Muppets, and Con Man and give you the scoop on what we liked (and ... didn't). Thanks for listening! Our Intro/Outro music is "We are Highscore" by Krackatoa!
Ready Brown Coats? Firefly is an American space western science fiction drama television series created by writer and director Joss Whedon that is 500 years in the future after a universal civil war, the crew of a small transport spaceship takes any job so long as it puts food on the table. Full of amazing characters and comedy, once of my favorite shows of all time! We kick off the @HeroHeads New 52 Episodes with the Firefly/Serenity two punch combo!--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/southarcadia/support
In true "Raiders of the Fandom" fashion, we discuss the power of the people in how fans of a cancelled television show can unite in their love and appreciation for a show to support two of Firefly's main cast members on a television project. Having already raised over 600% beyond their target, Fillion and Tudyk's "Con Man" has broken records in crowd funding for a creative project. This can't be ignored. This has to be celebrated. This is the power of fandom, and no networks or studios can ignore that. Firefly and Serenity, 14 episodes and one film. That's all it takes.

What Are You Doing, Movie? - Firefly: "Serenity" - You'd be forgiven for thinking Prometheus was the "Christmas Gift" episode for this year, but nope! People have been asking for nearly four years. Here's the only Firefly commentary we'll ever do.

The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system, and follows the adventures of the renegade crew of Serenity, a "Firefly-class" spaceship. The ensemble cast portrays the nine characters who live on Serenity. Whedon pitched the show as "nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things." The show explores the lives of some people who fought on the losing side of a civil war and others who now make a living on the outskirts of society, as part of the pioneer culture that exists on the fringes of their star system. In addition, it is a future where the only two surviving superpowers, the United States and China, fused to form the central federal government, called the Alliance, resulting in the fusion of the two cultures. According to Whedon's vision, "nothing will change in the future: technology will advance, but we will still have the same political, moral, and ethical problems as today."

Remember When is back, and shinier than ever! In our latest episode, we talk about Joss Whedon's Firefly and the feature film follow-up, Serenity. A cult phenomenon that lasted a mere 14 episodes (3 of which weren't aired in the original run), this show holds a special place in the hearts of Jay and Parris. We kick off by discussing how the two of us were introduced to this legendary series, and talk about how a simple TV show turned us from enthusiastic fans into Browncoats (and what it means to be a Browncoat). And after a fresh viewing of the entire TV run, we take a look at which episodes are our favorite, which ones will end up crumbling over time, and remark at how extraordinary it is that so many of the episodes hold up over time. We even give you our selections for favorite and least favorite episodes. Then we jump into the Serenity feature film. Both of us followed this piece of cinema joy as it progressed through creation, seeing it several times in pre-release fashion before it even hit the mass market. You won't believe how many times Jay saw the movie in total! Serenity was a moment of beauty for both Parris and Jay, and we talk about some of our favorite scenes, pieces of dialog that tickled us, and what makes this such a spectacle to behold. And hey, even in our Firefly-centric episode, we have a few tangents. Fortunately though, we saved those until the end, so if you're not a fan of True Blood, you can skip right past it. We close our show with a BIG BIG ANNOUNCEMENT that will be the first big step for Remember When's future. This is something you won't want to miss. As always, Remember When continues to grow and thrive thanks to the joy, love, appreciation, and comments we get from our fans. If you enjoy our show, please leave us positive feedback on iTunes. We really appreciate it, plus it helps us reach people that have never heard of us! And if you'd like to share your thoughts with us, you can send us an email at rw@filmtangent.com or leave us a voicemail at 206-495-1732. Please note, long distance charges may apply. Program time stamps: Start to 1:19:05 - Firefly & Serenity discussion (spoiler filled) 1:19:05 - 1:26:25 - True Blood Season 3 discussion (minor spoilers) and some other TV talk 1:26:25 to end - The BIG BIG ANNOUNCEMENT
This episode is sponsored by: On the needles: The Knitmore Girls went to the Pajama Jammie Jam at Purlescence, and Gigi bought a bunch of Regia sock yarn, 2 skeins of the Franklin's Panopticon colorway of the Lorna's Laces shephard sock, 2 skeins of Argyle Socks (by Claudia's Handpainted yarns), and some Buffalo Gals yarnBrenda Patipa's "On the Vine" scarf. Jasmin bought 2 skeins of the the Panopticon colorway, 1 skein of Creatively Dyed "Ocean", and a JUMBO Ball winder. Jasmin thinks she wants to weave because she saw this thread on the Lisa Souza board on Ravelry. She's contemplating selling the giant loom in order to buy a smaller loom that is more size appropriate to her house. Jasmin finished her The Sea socks (out of the vintage Lisa Souza yarn)! She's also finished the Mesh Back Cardigan for Sandi. Jasmin cast on a pair of socks in the Schaefer "Anne" in the "Sarah" colorway. Inspired by Stephanie, Jasmin cast on the "Santa Fe Wrap" from Simply Shetland 3. She's knitting it in Noro Kureyon Sock (Color S185) and Jamieson Shetland Spindrift 2-ply in Purple Heather. She's also knitting the Maude Vest (from Simply Shetland 2) in Kauni (in W-EQ and W-EL). She's also cast on a pair of Mesmer socks in Ginger Cinnabar (Colinette Jitterbug). Gigi likes to put the date of purchase on her yarn. On Saturday, Gigi cast on the Regia Galaxy (in Saturn) with a Cobblestone cuff. Gigi finished her Upstream Socks. Gigi also bought some Araucania at Green Planet Yarns, which is going the be the Crystal Cove Pullover by Jill Vosburg. Jasmin is having a bout of seriously awesome knitting mojo. Jasmin is also knitting some Yucatan Orchid (mmmm... cashmere!) socks in hot pink. Contest! Give to charity, let us know, be eligible to win one of three signed copies of Stephanie Pearl-McPhee's "Free Range Knitter". Jasmin was listening to cogKNITive, and Dr. Gemma talked about Caps to the Capital, and how baby hats drastically decrease the incidence of infant mortality. Contest ends January 1st! Mother Knows Best: Picking colors. You can get your colors "done" (like in the 80's). Look at the colors against your skin, in natural sunlight. Also, a good LYS will have employees who will give you good advice on colors. Take a friend with you- the brutally honest one - to help you. Listener Margaret told us about the Simply Socks Yarn Co, and how they send samples of sock yarn on little, business card-sized pieces of paper with a couple of slashes. It's a fantastic detail to add to a gift, and one could get 250 custom(ish) business cards from VistaPrint for the cost of shipping. (It's the same weight as our permission slip/business cards. Nice, heavy cardstock.) Also, the Knitmore Girls have personalized labels from Charm woven Labels. They're a brilliant finishing touch. When Knitting Attacks: Jasmin was at the Firefly/Serenity convention in Burbank, CA last weekend, and packed her Pride sweater to work on. During one of the speakers, the tip of her circular needle came off. The cable detached from the needle. Jasmin and Ally harassed all the knitters they saw in the vendor hall, and a nearby gentleman gave them turn-by-turn directions to Unwind. (Thanks, Viva Scrapper!) Jasmin bought a backup project, and the necessary replacement needle. She finished the ball of heavyweight AND half a sock in the remaining day. Also, Jasmin is unenthused with the Socks that Rock heavyweight. The color is not saturated (meaning the core of the yarn is still white), and there are loads of joins in the yarn.
This week on Will Write For Wine… Lani and Sam are cranky. Skype is misbehaving. The French use too many vowels. And we talk about world-building using Firefly/Serenity and Chocolat. So, Joss Whedon and Johnny Depp. What more could you want?
Hey, folks. I've decided to post my current batch of Firefly commentaries. These are my very first recordings. They can also be found at www.bigdamncommentaries.com I'm a Browncoat and a fan of all works by Joss Whedon. This commentary for the Firefly pilot is the first in a series which will cover the whole show and finish with the movie.
