Luego, junto a PR-17, llegará ASTONISHING X-MEN a nuestra sección de cómics Entre Viñetas.

Joined by Tivis, one of the co-hosts of the Munster Cast (and a sponsor for the CGS 20th Anniversary!), the Speakers of Geek engage in a meaty Comic Talk episode celebrating everything from ‘60s TV (Oh, Lily!) to Batman Day 2024 (Take the quiz!) to the 25th Anniversary of Baltimore Comic Con (and the shopping!). Along the way we also share thoughts on the passing of John Cassaday, a Golden Eagle query concerning the Eisners, unspoken convention etiquette, a comic shop rant, our reading habits, and more! (1:42:02)
So this is the second episode paying tribute to the late great John Cassaday, the award winning comics artist, best known for his co-creation of Planetary, which we revisited last week John Cassaday passed away far too soon at the age of 52 on September 9, 2024 in New York City. Be sure to check out last week's replay of our episode of his work on Planetary - and of course, go pick up a copy - you will be blown away. This week we're revisiting one of our earliest episodes from our inaugural X-Month, where we read Cassaday's work on 2004's Astonishing X-Men - another solid read. We hope you'll make the time to revisit the work with us, to see the work of comics truly great artists. Mr. Cassaday received an Eisner Award, the comic book industry equivalent of the Oscar, for best penciler/inker in 2004. He tied for the award with Frank Quitely in 2005 and won it again in 2006, for Planetary with writer Warren Ellis and Astonishing X-Men with writer Joss Whedon, “There are basically three people that I would count as the easiest collaborations, the most natural, the best I've ever worked with,” Mr. Whedon said in an interview. “One is an actor, one is an editor and one is Johnny. He knew so much of what I was trying to convey that my scripts just got shorter and shorter.” “The best page I ever wrote in comics has no words,” Mr. Whedon said. The page, which also has no sound effects, depicts Kitty Pryde, Colossus's lover, gazing at him with a stunned expression as she places a hand over her heart. “He didn't swagger, he didn't yell,” Mr. Whedon said of Mr. Cassaday, but “he was very exacting” about his art — an approach that included giving notes on the colors and lettering of his pages. Laura J. Martin, the colorist on Astonishing X-Men, said that one of her favorite collaborations with Mr. Cassaday was the cover of No. 6 in the series, on which he depicted Kitty and Colossus caressing. The cover required extensive color work to convey texture and the silver sheen of Colossus's metallic body. Mr. Cassaday gave Ms. Martin that cover as a wedding present. Rest in peace John Cassaday.NY TIMES: John Cassaday, Award-Winning Comic Book Artist, Dies at 52https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/arts/john-cassaday-dead.html

Baltimore Comic Con (BCC) invited Jimmy down at the last minute to be on a panel remembering his close friend John Cassaday. Besides Jimmy, Scott Dunbier (former Wildstorm EIC), Heidi MacDonald (The Beat EIC), Albert Moy (John's art dealer) and Joe Rybandt (Dynamite Entertainment Executive Editor) were on the panel as well. They shared stories of times together, his work, how they met and more. Dean Haspiel also told a great story from the audience. Some other audience members told short stories of meeting him and how kind he was to them. We told some fun stories and some more serious ones and it got very emotional at times. You'll hear the whole panel. Thanks to Bob Harrison for hosting and big thanks to Brad Tree of BCC for everything. Jimmy also briefly talks about his short time at the show (he only was there on Sunday) and running into mutual friends. Sharing stories, crying together, laughing together and more. It was comforting and somewhat cathartic and part of the reason he went. To be surrounded by so many of John's friends. Jimmy also comments on the show a bit as he walked around before and after the panel. Thanks for listening.

A few weeks ago, we lost a great comics artist far too soon. John Cassaday was an award-winning American comic book artist, writer, and television director - who passed away on September 9, 2024 in New York City at the age of 52 i think it goes without saying that comics is a medium where great writing and art come together for a truly great medium of storytelling. and when both are firing on all cylinders, it truly something to behold. John Cassaday was one of those artists. So on Quarantined Comics, we've had the good fortune to revisit some of the works Cassaday was best known for: This episode we'll be talking about 1998's critically acclaimed series Planetary, which he co-created with Warren Ellis. John later went on to work on Marvel's relaunch of Star Wars with Jason Aaron, whose first issue sold more than a million copies. Acclaimed writer Mark Waid, who was one of the first to help Cassaday get his start said this — “I refuse to take any real credit for ‘discovering' John Cassaday,” Mr. Waid wrote on Facebook. “I can't take credit for having functioning eyeballs.”Next week we'll be re-sharing our episode about his work on 2004's Astonishing X-Men. Rest in peace John Cassaday, you were one of the greats. NY TIMES: John Cassaday, Award-Winning Comic Book Artist, Dies at 52 https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/18/arts/john-cassaday-dead.html
This week we look at the surprisingly good looking trailers for Brothers, Venom 3, and Salem's Lot! The "Dirty Sons of Pitches" might have finally met their match when it comes to the closer of their Flop Era series, examining the most notorious flops and fiascos in film history. This week it's the dud that became infamous and recognizeable just by name alone -- it's 1987's "Ishtar"! How bad can a movie be starring Waren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as bad lounge singers stumbling through the desert be? The answer is unfathomably bad, especially if you're like the guys and find every second of the bad singing to be painful. It;s time to bid goodbye to this series, which might be the worst idea these guys have ever had, and they watched "A Serbian Film" on purpose. Available on Spotify and Apple Episode 421 includes: -The Presidential Debate has finally put the focus on the issues that matter: whether immigants are stealing and then eating our pets. -R.I.P. James Earl Jones and comic artist John Cassaday. -Nate has some words on "Longlegs" and "Alien: Romulas." -Ben is mildly disappointed by "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice." -The Flop Era -- "Ishtar" (1987) -There's no going back once you've endured "Ishtar." You might as well listen to their madness and pained cries as the guys try and make sense of all the ways this movie did not work for them at all.
We continue to celebrate the life of the legendary cartoonist John Cassaday who tragically died on September 9th. He was one of Jimmy's closest friends. Jimmy shares some stories of their friendship and adventures. He also asked some of John's friends/colleagues to send in their memories of him as well. They talk about his incredible body of work, how they met, fun times together and more. Thanks so much to Ben Raab, Paul Pope, Heidi MacDonald, CB Cebulski, John Layman, Fabio Moon, Laura Martin, Michael Avon Oeming, Lorraine Cink, Nick Barrucci, Dean Haspiel, Marta Balusek and Producer Joe for sharing their reflections on John. This is an emotional and raw episode but also full of love and light. We all love and miss him terribly. We were all lucky to have him in our lives. His legacy will keep his energy around us eternally. Thanks for listening.
What if every superhero and pulp fiction universe was condensed down into one universe, which was also the Wildstorm Universe? The Planetary team uncovers the secret history of their world and, in the process, performs a metatextual analysis on genre comics. But to what end? With one fan of the series and one hater on board, we debate whether Planetary restores a sense of wonder to superheroes and has anything insightful to say about them, or whether it's just more guys with powers vying for control of the universe while making snarky comments to each other. We'll also gush over John Cassaday and Laura Martin's art, discuss the difference between pastiche and archetypes, and consider how the comics industry evolved over the course of the series' highly delayed run. This episode was recorded before John Cassaday's passing. A brief introduction at the top of the show, recorded more recently, contextualizes how we ultimately decided to release this episode. This episode also discusses allegations about Warren Ellis and the question of whether to revisit his work at all surrounding those allegations. Our dear friend John Cassaday passed away on September 9th. As many know, Jimmy was one of his best pals. As you can imagine, he is devastated. We are doing a couple of special episodes to honor his memory. John was a big supporter of our podcast from the very beginning. He came on only a handful of times or so in the early days and let us find our feet after that. He was always one to let his work speak for itself and we respected that. We put together a compilation of some of the episodes he was on including Episodes 18, 50, 100 and 200. As said, early days. We think you'll love hearing John talk about his work back then as these date from 2005-2009. Such an incredibly talented and kind man. One of the best comic book artists ever and a true friend. His work will live on. Next episode, Jimmy asked some of John's friends/colleagues to send in their memories of him. How they met, his work, a favorite story and more. Jimmy talks of their friendship and shares a few stories as well. It will be an emotional one for sure. Come back later this week to listen. Also, get a hold of us! Thanks for listening!
On this special episode, we honor the extraordinary legacy of actor James Earl Jones, a voice that defined generations. From his groundbreaking roles in Dr. Strangelove and The Great White Hope, to his unforgettable performances in The Lion King and Coming to America, Jones left an indelible mark on cinema. But without question, his most iconic role was as Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, where his commanding voice became the stuff of legend. We also take a few moments to honor popular comic book artist and writer John Cassaday (Planetary, Astonishing X-Men, Captain America #1). Cassaday was a favorite of ours, and he and Jones both died on Monday, September 9, 2024. Rest in peace, gentlemen.

Writer/artist Declan Shalvey joins the show to talk about his rather considerable mix of projects. Shalvey discusses his busy dance card, the value of time, putting out fires, why he wanted to work on Mystique, cool versus good, writing and drawing an X-Book, what Mystique started with, how he's handling the character, how Old Dog Operations came together, what it's about, the creators of the project, what's next for Old Dog, the Thundercats explosion, becoming a licensed guy, the stigma around those titles, what he's missing, and more, before we close with a conversation about John Cassaday.

We dive into breaking news, including Amazon offering Jared Leto the role of Skeletor in the upcoming Masters of the Universe film, and Josh Brolin's decision to pass on the role of Hal Jordan in HBO's Green Lantern series. Also, Judd Apatow is set to direct, with Steven Spielberg producing, Cola Wars for Sony, chronicling Pepsi's battle to dethrone Coca-Cola. We also touch on director Gary Dauberman's remarks about Stephen King's crucial role in ensuring the release of Salem's Lot, which finally arrives on Max after multiple delays. So in the first segment we talk abou the wonderful works that James Earl Jones did before talking about meeting John Cassaday and how we made her smile. In the second section we talk about the possibility of a Goonies sequel before talking about the infamous Chase Money Glitch that happened over Labor Day. 1) Did you know you can donate to or leave a "Tip" for our show to help us offset the costs in getting new(ish) equipment by using this link: https://tinyurl.com/lcmptipjar 2) Help out our O.G. co-host Big Candy by getting yourself some wearable merch by going here: http://tee.pub/lic/WidsgeTHv7A 3) Due to issues we just dropped our partnership with Dubby Energy! Sneak into any comic book geek's home, and you'll probably find copies of Marvels and Kingdom Come. What about Uncle Sam, though? The series hit shops in 1997 from DC's Vertigo label, and it sparked provocative thought from those who read it, but for whatever reason, it did not resonate as soundly within the direct market crowd as Alex Ross' more recognizably superheroic collaborations. It's time to reconsider Uncle Sam, just in time. We're months away from a critical American election as of this writing. The stakes are high. Our fears are even more so. Democracy is under threat and as fragile as it always has been. There is the America we tell people about and the America we actually live inside. There is the dream, and there are the dreamers. Uncle Sam, written by Steve Darnall and illustrated by Alex Ross, challenges its readers to accept our America and its violent history while encouraging us to shape it into what we want it to be. Yes, it's depressing to encounter a tale published in 1997 that's relevant to 2024 readers. The depression is the point. Democracy is a neverending battle; the only cure for exhaustion and apathy is action. Uncle Sam is what filmmaker Boots Riley would call a "rallying cry." Let's circle it, make community, and do something. Hope is not passive; it's active. We're beyond delighted to have Alex Ross back on the podcast this week. This time, he's joined by his writing partner, Steve Darnall, and we dig deep into Uncle Sam. What was their compulsion to explore this icon, why are they fighting to bring their book back into bookstores, and how would they write Uncle Sam today? In our introduction, we also celebrate the life of artist John Cassaday, who left us far too soon at 52. Cassaday profoundly impacted our early comic reading relationship, bringing us together and launching our Graphic Novel Book Club, which we consider Comic Book Couples Counseling Version 1.0. The artist represents the best of what this medium can do, and his legacy lives on in us, his readers, and those who create in his wake. Our heart breaks for his friends and his family, and we offer them our love and gratitude for sharing John with us while they could. Uncle Sam is now available from Abrams Comic Arts and DC's Black Label. You can find Alex Ross on his Website, Twitter, and Instagram.
