We dive deep into the incredible career of Roger Bart, a Tony Award-winning actor who has brought iconic characters to life on both stage and screen. Currently starring as Doc Brown in Back to the Future: The Musical, Roger shares his journey with us, from his early Broadway debut in Big River to his voice work as young Hercules in Disney's animated classic. Roger reflects on his career highlights, including his award-winning role as Snoopy in You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, working with Mel Brooks in The Producers and Young Frankenstein, and his memorable TV roles in Desperate Housewives and Revenge. He offers fascinating behind-the-scenes stories from his time developing Back to the Future from its early days in Europe to its current run on Broadway, touching on the challenges of portraying Doc Brown and how he brings his unique comedic flair to the role. Roger also discusses his love for comedy, the influence of Warner Bros. cartoons on his sense of humor, and how he balances broad comedic moments with genuine character depth. He offers heartfelt advice for young performers: be prepared, be kind, and don't be afraid to make bold choices. Roger Bart's passion for performing began in childhood, using his singing talent to connect with his parents and spark his love for the stage. His professional journey truly began after studying acting at Rutgers' Mason Gross School of the Arts, where he transitioned from instinctual performing to a more profound understanding of the craft. This education laid the foundation for his wide-ranging career, where his unique blend of humor and depth has become a hallmark of his performances. His comedic style, influenced by the precise timing and structure of Warner Bros. cartoons, was refined during his collaborations with Mel Brooks in the beloved productions of The Producers and Young Frankenstein. Roger's career spans both stage and screen. He made his Broadway debut in Big River and won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Snoopy in the 1999 revival of You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown. In addition to his stage work, Roger has also left a mark on television with notable roles in Desperate Housewives, Revenge, Good Trouble, and A Series of Unfortunate Events. Film and voice work include the 2005 movie version of The Producers and voicing young Hercules in Disney's Hercules. Currently, he stars as Doc Brown in Back to the Future: The Musical, a role that has earned him a Tony nomination and further solidified his reputation as a versatile and beloved actor. "I asked myself, "Where would people never notice a town full of robots? Connecticut!" We watched the infamously camp remake of "The  Stepford Wives" directed by Frank Oz with our friend Chris Gallo (Golden Girls Posters). We might be scratching our heads about the actual plot of this adaptation of the 1972 Ira Levin novel, but at a brisk ninty minutes (not including credits) do we really care? This cast is more full of gay icons than the  Palm Springs Walk of Fame - powerhouse actresses like Bette Midler and Glenn Close absolutely knock these Paul Rudnick one-liners out of the park and they make just about any plot holes disappear. Nicole Kidman leads our cast as a disgraced TV exec exiled to Stepford Connecticut where the titular wives are a little too good to be true. Bette Midler is in top form playing an ultra liberal Stepford newbie getting into Scooby Gang shenanigans with Nic and Roger Bart as the gay soon to be "Stepford Husband". The would-be robotic antics of the wives are played for camp and Glenn Close is really killing it as the over the top alpha wife. The alleged script re-writes, on set clashes between actors and Oz and the general unevenness of the plot take their toll, but the women really carry this one and we could watch Glenn and Faith Hill Do-Si-Do with smoke coming out of their ears all day. Don't think too hard about this one - just let the microchips take over and enjoy the show.  Thanks for listening and don't forget to subscribe, rate and review us on Apple Podcasts! www.patreon.com/moviesthatmadeusgay Facebook/Instagram: @moviesthatmadeusgay Twitter: @MTMUGPod Scott Youngbauer: Twitter @oscarscott / Instagram @scottyoungballer Peter Lozano: Twitter/Instagram @peterlasagna

He is crushed when, instead of giving him his big break, gallery owner Susan criticizes him for not taking enough risks. Emboldened, he heads into the city's subway system at night, where he takes pictures of an impending sexual assault before saving the woman. The next day, he discovers she has gone missing. Intrigued, he investigates reports of similar disappearances. His investigation leads him to a butcher named Mahogany, who he suspects has been killing subway passengers for the past three years. Leon presents his photos to the police, but Detective Hadley disbelieves him. Leon's involvement quickly turns into a dark obsession, upsetting his girlfriend Maya, who is also disbelieving of his story. Leon follows Mahogany onto the last subway train of the night, only to witness a bloodbath. The butcher kills several passengers and hangs their bodies on meat hooks. After a brief scuffle with Mahogany, Leon passes out on the train. He awakes the next morning in a slaughterhouse with strange markings carved into his chest. A concerned Maya and her friend Jurgis examine Leon's photos of Mahogany, leading them to the killer's apartment. After breaking in, Jurgis is captured, though Maya escapes with timetables that record over a hundred years of murders on the subway. She goes to the police but finds Hadley still skeptical. When Hadley presses Maya to return the timetables, she demands answers. At gunpoint, Hadley directs her to take the midnight train to find Jurgis. Leon heads to a hidden subway entrance in the slaughterhouse, arming himself with several knives. He boards the train as Mahogany completes his nightly massacre and corners Maya. Leon attacks the murderer with a knife, and the two fight in between the swinging human flesh. Human body parts are ripped, thrown, and used as weapons. Jurgis, hung from a meat hook, dies when he is gutted. The train reaches its final stop, a cavernous abandoned station filled with skulls and decomposing bodies. The conductor appears, advising Leon and Maya to "step away from the meat." The true purpose of the abandoned station is revealed, as reptilian creatures enter the car and consume the bodies of the murdered passengers. Leon and Maya flee into the cavern. Mahogany, battered, fights to the death with Leon. After Leon stabs a broken femur through his throat, Mahogany only grins in his dying throes, saying, "Welcome!" The conductor tells Leon the creatures have lived beneath the city long before the subway was constructed, and the butcher's job is to feed them each night to keep them from attacking subway riders during the day. He picks up Leon and, with the same supernatural strength as the deceased butcher, rips out Leon's tongue and eats it. The conductor brings Leon's attention to Maya, who has been knocked unconscious and is lying on a pile of bones. The conductor forces Leon to watch as he cuts Maya's chest open to remove her heart. He says that, having killed the butcher, Leon must take his place. Detective Hadley hands the train schedule to the new butcher, who wears a ring with the symbol of the group that feeds the creatures. The killer walks onto the midnight train and reveals himself as Leon. Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia-Lionsgate had recently hired executive Joseph Drake when the film was completing production. It's also implied that similar deals were brokered with similar abominations at the site of every major city in the world. It's time to finish that "book report" on "Edgar Allan Poe" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1971's You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown and 1982's Snoopy! The Musical on episode seventeen of My Favorite Flop.   ABOUT YOU'RE A GOOD MAN, CHARLIE BROWN Based on the characters created by cartoonist Charles M. Schulz in his comic strip Peanuts, You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite blockhead, Charlie Brown. The musical features music and lyrics by Clark Gesner and a book by John Gordon. Following an unprecedented run of 1,597 performances off-Broadway, the musical finally opened to mixed reviews on The Great White Way on June 1, 1971 and closed 32 performances later. Many critics had felt that much of its original charm had evaporated during the transfer. Despite that, the musical became a popular staple in the amateur theater market and is known as one of the most beloved musicals of all time. In 1998, a significantly revised version of the musical set out on a national tour before opening on Broadway the following year. It featured new dialogue by Michael Mayer, who also directed, and additional songs and orchestration written by composer Andrew Lippa. The character of Patty was replaced with Sally Brown, inspired by the same change Schulz made in the animated TV adaptation in the 1980s. The cast featured Anthony Rapp as Charlie Brown, B.D. Wong as Linus, Ilana Levine as Lucy, and Stanley Wayne Mathis as Schroeder. Also featured were Kristin Chenoweth and Roger Bart as Sally and Snoopy, with each winning the Tony award in the respective category. Despite its Tony wins, the musical failed to gain an audience and closed after just 149 performances.   Original Broadway Cast Dean Stolber as Charlie Brown Liz O'Neal as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Carter Cole as Schroeder Lee Wilson as Patty Grant Cowan as Snoopy ABOUT SNOOPY! THE MUSICAL An official sequel to You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Snoopy! The Musical shares the story of a day in the life of everybody's favorite beagle, Snoopy. The musical features music by Larry Grossman, lyrics by Hal Hackady, and a book by Warren Lockhart, Arthur Whitelaw, and Michael Grace. Despite You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown's Broadway failure in 1971, it had already become a worldwide sensation, and producer Arthur Whitelaw felt that it needed a follow-up. This time, however, he would both write and direct the piece. Snoopy! The Musical premiered on December 9, 1975 at the Little Fox Theatre in San Francisco, California and, despite mixed reviews, ran for 7 months. The musical was then produced Off-Broadway at the Lamb's Theatre in 1982 starring David Garrison as Snoopy. The show performed 152 performances until it closed on May 1, 1983. The Off-Broadway production received similar reviews to the San Francisco production. Later, when Lorna Luft replaced Peppermint Patty, a new song was written for her, entitled "Hurry Up, Face". This song was used in later productions, including the West End later that year. The 1983 West End production was a critically acclaimed success and ran for 479 performances. A revised version of Snoopy! The Musical opened Texas State University in 2017 with a new song co-written by Andrew Lippa and restored material that had been cut from previous versions of the show. This version, now called The World According To Snoopy, is available to license alongside the original.   Original Off-Broadway Cast David Garrison as Snoopy Terry Kirwin as Charlie Brown Vicki Lewis as Peppermint Patty Kay Cole as Lucy Stephen Fenning as Linus Deborah Graham as Sally Brown Cathy Cahn as Woodstock

In Part 1 of our conversation, Barry discusses the many musicals he’s penned including 13 Things About Ed Carpolotti, Was, Angelina, The Rat Race, Metropolita(i)n, Second Avenue Rag, Big City Rhythm, and more. Hear him talk about what he learned from Harold Rome, how he decides a property should be musicalized, why you should never assume anyone knows who you are, why he made Frank Gilroy forget the ending of his own play, and why he ended up having two months to write a show to be performed in a barge on the Seine! Plus, more stories about Penny Fuller, Joseph Thalken, Barbara Harris, Tina Landau, and others! Also, throughout the episode you can enjoy never before released performances of Mr. Kleinbort’s songs by Danny Burstein, Howard McGillin, Roger Bart, Rita Gardner, and other great artists!

The film is a dark comedy about a disgruntled summer-stock actor who contemptuously disregards the superstition surrounding Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth. By doing so he unleashes the curse of The Scottish Play and wreaks havoc on the company. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/followingfilms/support

Roger Bart is an actor, known for The Producers, American Gangster, and Desperate Housewives. Today I had him on the show to talk about his work on the film GHOST LIGHT. The film is a dark comedy about a disgruntled summer-stock actor who contemptuously disregards the superstition surrounding Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth. By doing so he unleashes the curse of The Scottish Play and wreaks havoc on the company.

On this week's episode, the gang tackles the confused, wrong-headed, obnoxious remake, The Stepford Wives! With a film like this, being remade in the 21st century, why not attach some women to the writer/director roles, eh, Paramount? What does this film think it's trying to say? Why are we forced to think about Broderick's junk? And why. in. the. WORLD could they not decide between ROBOTS OR MICROCHIPS?! PLUS: Is this episode the first time Jimmy Durante was mentioned on a podcast? The Stepford Wives stars Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, Bette Midler, Glenn Close, Roger Bart, Christopher Walken, Jon Lovitz, and Faith Hill; directed by Frank Oz.

A circus parade is traveling down Main Street in a small town. At the back is an old man whose job it is to shovel the manure from all the circus animals into a big bag slung over his shoulder. A passer-by asks him how long he's been doing the job and how much he gets paid, to which he replies 50 years and $250 a week.  "Well why on earth don't you stop doing it and find a better job instead?" asks the passer-by. The old man replies, "What, and give up show business?" The great Gordon Hunt, a wonderful acting teacher and casting director, encouraged his students to think of every audition as a chance to act on a Tuesday. There are times when I am able to do that and times when it feels like an exercise in futility but his words have always stayed with me. And even though more often than not  the audition doesn't turn into the job, when I looked at the alternative of another career - perhaps one with more emotional and financial stability -  my answer would be, "What, and give up show business?!" So how do we actors do it? How do we leave the audition room feeling humiliated and get up the next day and do it again? Listen to famous actors like Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Dan Folger, Connie Schulman, Bryan Greenberg, Aasif Mandvi, John Slattery,  Roger Bart, Noah Emmerich and Mary Stuart Masterson share hilarious and inspiring stories from the audition trenches.

With its suggestive exclamation point, the title of the new Broadway musical Disaster! hints at the campy, over-the-top qualities it brings to the Nederlander Theatre. Set on a cruise ship precariously moored along the Hudson River, the show spoofs disaster movies such as The Poseidon Adventure and Earthquake that were popular in the 1970s. It also features a number of disco hits and pop songs of the era. Written by Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick, the production has assembled a cast of well-known Broadway names: Faith Prince, Roger Bart, Adam Pascal and Kerry Butler, among them. New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood has experienced this Disaster! first-hand and weighs in on its less-than calamitous results.

There’s a new independent horror film being released in select AMC theaters this weekend: the teen cyber-slasher flick Smiley. The movie’s titular villain is a serial killer who can be called on to kill anyone over the internet. But this isn’t your typical slasher -- there’s a pseudo-philosophical subtext to it exploring the power of online anonymity and the internet as an extension of human nature. Michael J. Gallagher stops by to talk about the dark side of the cyberspace and the process of making and distributing an independent feature film. SHOW NOTES: About Our Guest: Michael J. Gallagher is the creator of the online sketch comedy series "Totally Sketch" and the director of the independent horror film Smiley. He has been studying and producing film since he was nine years old. The Episode: 0:26 - Introduction and clip 3:32 - When did you know you were ready to direct a feature film? 5:33 - You have experience with sketch comedy. Why did you choose to do a horror film? Was it really just for budgetary reasons? 8:07 - The film touches on some pretty dark themes. Was it difficult to return to sketch comedy and that mindset after working on Smiley? 9:18 - You and several of your actors have made names for yourselves through the internet, but your film takes a very pessimistic view of the internet. Is this basically just a 90-minute F.U. to your YouTube commenters? 12:23 - Your group takes a very cynical look at groups like 4chan and Anonymous, and you’ve even been threatened by Anonymous as a result. 14:25 - In the film, Roger Bart plays a professor who theorizes that the internet could evolve into a new type of organism. Did you and your co-writer Glasgow Phillips come up with that? What was the inspiration? 16:50 - Tell me about how you ended up with this unique distribution model. 20:10 - Why did you name your serial killer Smiley? Why not Frowny or Winky? 21:10 - Show close DON'T FORGET: You can contact us by emailing letsgetreel@filmgeekradio.com. Thanks for listening!
