Hey there, do you remember the 80s? We don't. We weren't even alive then. But somebody does, and they want to make sure you remember it to, remember it the way they did, as babies. In this episode we pick apart the falsely imagined perpetual childhood of the GenX Movie Guy, trace the counters of the crassly commercial 'Legacy Sequel', ponder the pitfalls of nostalgia, ponder Jason Reitman's daddy issues, and ask the big question: How does an affable 80s screwball comedy become a sepia-toned coming of age dramedy? Well, y'know, it's a love-letter! Though to whom and regarding what, we cannot say. For the folks that asked, "What if Ghostbusters, but with none of the jokes?" we present "Afterlife." In 2021 Jason Reitman heled a sequel to his dad's two entries from the 80s, ignoring the existence of the 2016 movie altogether. The result is a good looking, well acted, well directed, two hour slog of a film filled with Easter Eggs and nostalgia bait meant to pull at the heart strings of every guy that said the previous film "killed their childhood." Mike, Brian, and Ariel are here to talk about this one, and boy do we try not to.

The 1984 comedy horror film Ghostbusters faced initial criticism but quickly became a beloved franchise, spawning sequels, cartoons, and a dedicated fan base. Originating from Dan Aykroyd's fascination with ghosts and quantum physics, the series expanded with Ghostbusters 2, despite production challenges. A mixed reception for the 2016 reboot led to Ghostbusters: Afterlife, reigniting interest with nostalgia and new storytelling, followed by Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, which continues the saga with familiar and new characters. The franchise's evolution shows how audience perceptions can shift, blending science and the supernatural, with upcoming projects promising to keep the ghostbusting spirit alive. At The Movies 2024 Week Two - Ghostbusters Afterlife by Pastor Troy Powell
The Halloween celebration continues as the boys dive into the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise. Movies Discussed: Ghostbusters (1984) Ghostbusters 2 (1989) Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
Happy spooky season! After 40 years, we are resurrecting Ghostbusters, but not the original, nor all the sequels and remakes that followed, but Afterlife, the sequel not-sequel remake-yet-not-remake sequel. We have a kid named Podcast, marshmallows with sado-masochistic tendencies, and Paul Rudd with a flower in his hair. At least we have confirmation that Gozer the Gozerian has ALWAYS had a flattop. This movie is wildly entertaining with the OG Ghostbusters seeing the story off to a new generation, with our patron saint of Sci-Fi Sigourney Weaver. I guess we all need to wonder if that earthquake is just a natural phenomenon, or it could be fracking, or is it an underground pyramid heralding the doom of all? At least we know who to call. . .
Editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reid SATURDAY NIGHT editors Nathan Orloff and Shane Reid team up for the second time in 2024 with their latest Jason Reitman / Gil Keenan project about NBC's long-running sketch comedy show. Having previously cut GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE together, the pair developed a strong working relationship that certainly came in handy when Shane had to do double duty between this project and DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (2024). SATURDAY NIGHT is a frenetic dramatization of what happened behind the scenes during the ninety minutes leading up to the first broadcast of NBC's Saturday Night on October 11th, 1975, when a dynamic young producer named Lorne Michaels lead a ferocious troupe of young comedians and writers in changing television forever. NATHAN ORLOFF Nathan Orloff is known for his editing on TULLY (2018), PLAN B (2021), GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE (2021), JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 4 (2023) and GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE (2024). It's Oct. 11, 1975, and the cast and crew of “Saturday Night Live” are scrambling to get the very first episode on the air. Director Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air, Ghostbusters: Afterlife) chronicles those chaotic 90 minutes in his new movie, “Saturday Night.” He sits down with Tom to talk about how spending a week writing for “SNL” inspired the film, what it took to capture the excitement and tension of that night, and how truly revolutionary “SNL” was for its time.
After a brief break we are back with a spooky set of films for October, starting with the reboot redux of the Ghostbusters franchise. But is the film worthy of its pedigree? Tune in and find out what we think!

Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore Although the ALIEN: ROMULUS postproduction team of Jake Roberts ACE, Will Files, Polly McKinnon and Lee Gilmore came into this project with a wealth of knowledge and experience amongst them, they still learned a thing or two from director Fede Álvarez, including Fede's not-so-secret formula for jump scares, as well as the notion that clear dialogue isn't always as important as gripping action. Plus, they reveal the hidden intent of Álvarez to split ALIEN and ALIENS into the two sides of the REMUS/ROMULUS space station. ALIEN: ROMULUS is the ninth installment in the Alien franchise, set between the events of ALIEN (1979) and ALIENS (1986). The film follows a group of downtrodden young space colonists in pursuit of better life conditions. During the course of their escape from endless servitude on a mining colony, they encounter hostile creatures while scavenging a derelict space station. JAKE ROBERTS, ACE After his work on CITADEL (2012), STARRED UP (2013), THE RIOT CLUB (2014) and BROOKLYN (2015), Roberts earned an Oscar nomination for Best Film Editing for his work on HELL OR HIGH WATER (2016) starring Chris Pine. The movie also garnered him a nomination for an Independent Spirit Award. Roberts then cut OUTLAW KING (2018) for Netflix directed by David Mackenzie. He then began collaborating with director Alex Garland, editing his 2020 miniseries DEVS as well as his film, MEN (2022). Prior to ALIEN: ROMULUS, Jake cut Garland's CIVIL WAR (2024). WILL FILES Will Files is known for his work on THE INVISIBLE MAN (2020), VENOM (2018), WAR FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES (2017), STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – THE FORCE AWAKENS (2017) and CLOVERFIELD (2008). POLLY McKINNON Polly McKinnon is known for DISTRICT 9 (2009), FORD V FERRARI (2019) and DUNE: PART TWO (2024). In 2019 she won a Golden Reel Award for her sound editing on EXTINCTION (2018). LEE GILMORE Lee Gilmore is known for BLADE RUNNER 2049 (2017), DUNE (2021) and THE BATMAN (2022). Gilmore also won an Emmy for his work on the feature film, PREY (2022). Mike, Ian & Mina celebrate 40 years of Ghostbusters with fresh reviews of both Ghostbusters: Afterlife and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. If you can recall back to Mike's or Ian's first episodes on Back In My Day... you'll know that Ghostbusters (1984) along with The Real Ghostbusters animated series was the most important work of art from their childhood that keeps them coming back for more to this day. Tune in and you'll hear why these two latest installments in the franchise, which come in the form of... no not The Destructor... but a Legasequel no less (and a shining example at that!), are bringing back the things we loved from the original film and the Saturday morning cartoon. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backinmyday/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/backinmyday/support

This week the gang finds themselves once again sans Roger, but fear not! They're joined by none other than Ghostbuster aficionado and First Lady of Movie Torture, Hannah, as they embark on a hilariously haunting journey through the world of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. As they ponder the finer points of purchasing murder houses and if you get a murder discount when buying a murder house. Movie Torture dad chimes in with a suicide house would be worse and then Hannah says a murder car would be her nightmare, the conversation takes a whimsical turn as they delve into the destruction wrought by the Ghostbusters themselves. From debating the merits of living in a house where a murder has occurred to exploring the absurd notion of buying a murder car, no topic is off-limits in this uproarious discussion. But the real ghostly specter haunting their minds is the disappointing and frustrating experience of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. With razor-sharp wit and biting humor, the hosts tear apart the unnecessary romantic subplot, lament the lack of humor, and decry the overall cheapening of the Ghostbusters franchise. In a hilarious twist, they also dive into the murky waters of Hollywood's obsession with remakes and sequels, expressing their fervent desire for new and original ideas in the movie industry. From questioning the need for an R-rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie to praising the steadfast refusal to remake the original Back to the Future, the hosts leave no stone unturned in their quest for cinematic enlightenment. With laughter aplenty and opinions flying fast and furious, this episode is a must-listen for fans of Ghostbusters and lovers of all things comedic. It's the '80s all over again here at Breakfast All Day -- but then again, did it ever stop being the '80s? First, Christy and Alonso review "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire," which is not good, but at least it does a better job of blending the old and the new than 2021's "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" did. It's in theaters. Then we review "Road House," a remake of the 1989 cult favorite with Jake Gyllenhaal taking over the Patrick Swayze role. It's streaming on Prime Video. Finally, our good friend Tim Grierson from Screen International fills in on a review of "Immaculate," the new Sydney Sweeney horror movie which makes being a nun in Italy seem super dangerous. It's in theaters. And we start the whole episode off as we always do on Fridays with Movie News LIVE! Christy flies solo this time while Alonso's off recording his audiobook. Among the topics of discussion are trailers for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice," "Furiosa" and the "Star Wars" prequel series "The Acolyte." Thanks so much for sharing some of your time with us and have a great weekend.
