In this episode of Hit Rewind, hosts Michael and John explore the diverse landscape of comic books from 1999. While Marvel faced significant financial struggles, leading to the sale of many assets, DC Comics thrived with innovative and captivating narratives. The discussion delves into Marvel's attempts to stay afloat despite bankruptcy, including the relaunch of iconic titles and the introduction of new miniseries like Moon Knight and Black Widow. On the other hand, DC Comics soared with compelling arcs such as "No Man's Land" and the return of the Justice Society. Notable runs from creators like Grant Morrison in the "JLA" series and Chuck Dixon in the Bat-related titles showcased the vibrant creativity driving DC during this period. Additionally, the episode touches on independent comics and the emergence of Wildstorm's America's Best Comics, further illustrating the dynamic shifts within the comic book industry at the turn of the millennium.

Surprise, friends. Grant Morrison joins the show for Superman Day! As the writer behind the seminal All-Star Superman, which observes its 20th anniversary this November, we cannot think of a better person to help us celebrate the Last Son of Krypton on his 87th birthday. Action Comics #1, featuring the first appearance of Superman by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, hit newsstands on April 18th, 1938. It is the source of everything you love about superhero comics. When Action Comics first arrived, America was in economic ruin. The world was about to enter its second great war. Despair was easily accessible, but two Jewish kids from Cleveland imagined a Man of Steel who could do the impossible and would act for those who could not act for themselves. As we look outside our windows in 2025, we see an incredible darkness, but we strive for a future beyond it. We can imitate the devils in the dark, or we can seek Superman, who reflects the best version of ourselves. Like most people, probably, we first encountered Superman through television and film; it was the All-Star Superman comics by Grant Morrison, Frank Quitely, Jamie Grant, Phil Balsman, and Travis Lanham that solidified our passion for the character. Those twelve issues showcased the joyous, awful, absurd, and adventurous universe Superman populated, making us fall in love with it and our own realm in return. As Morrison writes in Supergods, we are the stories we tell ourselves. In Superman, we see who we've been, who we are, and who we could be. We're positively chuffed to chat Superman with Grant Morrison. We discuss their approach to the character in All-Star Superman and how it differs from the version they wrote in JLA, Action Comics, Final Crisis, and other stories. We discuss the significance of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster and what it means for Grant and others to extend their great idea. We talk about Lois and Clark, Lex Luthor, Samson, and Atlas, and Grant Morrison reveals their next big comic project somewhere along the line. Continue our conversation with Grant Morrison by visiting their Website, Substack, Instagram, and Bluesky. This Week's Sponsor: We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. On this episode, it's Superman's girl friend (two words): Lois Lane! We talk the origins of everyone's favorite "girl reporter" and kick things off with a 1944 story that sees Lois stepping out on her own sans Superman. Then, we zero in on a 1962 issue of Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane that sees the Daily Planet dynamo be "abandoned" by Superman (and face off against an octopus!) and then discover Superman's secret mermaid family on another planet (yep). We wrap up by discussing Lois on screen, why she doesn't have a more regular solo title and what to expect from Rachel Brosnahan's upcoming portrayal. After our recent Jimmy Olsen issue, we are talking about Superman's main squeeze: Lois Lane. We talk her origins from Siegel & Shuster (and Joanne Carter) and then cover an early story from Don Cameron & Ed Dobrotka that sees Lois talk someone off a ledge (literally). We then cover a zany issue of Superman's Girl Friend Lois Lane where Lois faces off against gangsters, an opium smuggler and an octopus without the help of Superman (or so she thinks). Plus, lookout for a truly bizarre Krypton cameo! Later in that issue, Lois discovers Superman has a secret mermaid wife and child on another planet but everything might not be what it appears to be in this story from the pencil of iconic Lois Lane artist Kurt Schaffenberger. Ready for some silver age silliness? For the first time, we are talking Superman's best pal: Jimmy Olsen! We start with a brief history of the redheaded sidekick, his first "official" appearance back in 1941, and an issue of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen that seems our hero transform into a werewolf, don drag to pretend to be a woman, befriend a leprechaun (that's really Mr. Mxyzptlk) and lots more zany shenanigans. We wrap up by talking about our favorite onscreen Jimmy's and what we want to see next from the character. Ep. 151 What if Jimmy Olsen became a werewolf, a woman and was friends with a leprechaun?from Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #44 (DC Comics)Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersGrab your bow ties and sweater vests, it's a deep dive into Jimmy Olsen! We kick off with a look at the origins of the character, from office boy to cub reporter to (eventually) photographer including early appearances in Siegel & Shuster penned issues. Then we jump into the wacky world of Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen in a three-part issue that sees Jimmy transform into a wolf-man, go under cover as a chorus girl and battle an inter-dimensional trickster, all set to the terrific art of Curt Swan. We wrap up by discussing Jimmy onscreen from Lois & Clark to My Adventures with Superman and speculate on Skyler Gisondo's take on the character in James Gunn's upcoming film. Ker smo se razmeroma srečno odpóčili v novo leto, se moramo končno pogovoriti o petardah. In o ognjemetih. O pirotehniki v najširšem pomenu besede. Pred nekaj leti smo petardiranje, kot v naši oddaji imenujemo adventno kanonado, poskušali zakonsko regulirati. Predpisali prepovedi in sankcionirali kršitve, a ni videti, da smo kam napredovali. Oziroma nazadovali. Ravno nasprotno.

Santa Claus is coming to town...or a comic book near you! We are talking a history of Santa Claus in comics plus Marvel & DC holiday specials. We start way back in 1947 with Action Comics that sees a real Scrooge try to ruin Christmas by causing Santa to gain a massive amount of weight from tainted chocolate. It's up to Superman to get St. Nick back to fighting weight and save the holiday. Then, we jump to What The in 1991 where Santa is again sidelined and Doctor Doom has to take over, much to the chagrin of the Avengers and Fantastic Four. We wrap up by talking about who else we'd like to see Santa meet. Ep. 149 What if Santa Claus and Christmas were saved by Superman and Doctor Doom?from Action Comics #105 & What The #10Find us at https://linktr.ee/dearwatchersIt's the holiday season so we are doing our first deep dive into the world of Christmas comics. We give a quick history of Santa in comics as well as background on comic book holiday specials. Then we see Superman rescue Santa from a few extra pounds in a 1947 Action Comics from Siegel, Shuster and John Sikela. Next, we jump to 1991 as Doctor Doom covers for Santa in a rhyming issue from powerhouses Scott Lobdell & John Byrne. We wrap up by pondering who else Santa should tangle with in pop culture.
