“…during Mozart's lifetime, the main focus was to keep the lightness of the key touch of the harpsichord and combine it with a hammer action which reacts like in the clavichord. The pianists expected the lightness of the action.” In this episode, you’ll: Learn about Viennese fortepianos from the leader of the restoration workshop at Vienna's Collection of Historic Musical Instruments; Discover what classical composers and pianists expected from their instruments — and what these instruments can teach modern pianists; Understand what fueled the evolution from the Viennese fortepiano to the modern piano; and Hear an excerpt of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata on a Schantz fortepiano.
Sermon Notes • Preacher: Jeremiah Fyffe • THE SERMON OUTLINE THE SERMON OUTLINE Matthew 5:1-16: The Character of the Christian Matthew 5:17-48: The Christian Faces the Law Matthew 6:1-34: The Christian Lives in the Presence of God Matthew 7:1-29: The Christian Lives in the Fear of God THE INTRODUCTION TO THE SERMON THE GOSPEL Revelation 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever. Matthew 4:23–5:1 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan. Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him. John 13:34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. Psalm 19:7–11: _The law of the LORD is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes; the fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever; the rules of the LORD are true, and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb. Moreover, by them is your servant warned; in keeping them there is great reward. Hebrews 12:28–29 Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. Matthew 7:28–29 _And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes. _ Martin Lloyd-Jones The world today is looking for, and desperately needs, true Christians. I am never tired of saying that what the Church needs to do is not to organize evangelistic campaigns to attract outside people, but to begin herself to live the Christian life. If she did that, men and women would be crowding into our buildings. Kent Hughes Contrary to popular opinion, blessed does not mean “happy,” even though some translations have rendered it this way. Happiness is a subjective state, a feeling. But Jesus is not declaring how people feel; rather, he is making an objective statement about what God thinks of them. Blessed is a positive judgment by God on the individual that means “to be approved” or “to find approval.” So when God blesses us, he approves us. Lloyd-Jones puts it this way A man may play a piece of great music quite accurately; he may make no mistakes at all. And yet it may be true to say of him that he did not really play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata. He played the notes correctly, but it was not the Sonata. What was he doing? He was mechanically striking the right notes, but missing the soul and the real interpretation. He wasn't doing what Beethoven intended and meant. … The artist, the true artist, is always correct. Even the greatest artist cannot afford to neglect rules and regulations. But that is not what makes him the great artist. It is this something extra, the expression; it is the spirit, it is the life, it is the whole that he is able to convey.

Jarvis Cocker navigates the ether as he continues his nocturnal exploration of the human condition. On a night voyage across a sea of shortwave he meets those who broadcast, monitor and harvest electronic radio transmissions after dark. Paddy McAloon, founder of the band Prefab Sprout, took to trawling the megahertz when he was recovering from eye surgery and the world around him became dark. Tuning in at night he developed a ghostly romance with far off voices and abnormal sounds. Artist Katie Paterson and 'Moonbouncer' Peter Blair send Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata to the moon and back, to find sections of it swallowed up by craters. Journalist Colin Freeman was captured by the Somali pirates he went to report on and held hostage in a cave. But when one of them loaned him a shortwave radio, the faint signal to the outside world gave him hope as he dreamed of freedom. And "London Shortwave" hides out in a park after dark, with his ear to the speaker on his radio, slowly turning the dial to reach all four corners of the earth Jarvis sails in and out of their stories - from the cosmic to the captive - as he wonders what else is out there, deep in the noise Producer Neil McCarthy.

This composition is one of Chopin's most famous, which is why it surprises most people to know it was never published in his lifetime. In fact, he instructed his pupil, Julian Fontana, to destroy the piece. It is not known why, but many speculate that he did not want the piece published for fear that some might say he had plagiarized Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata - this is because a passage in measures 7/8 (and repeated throughout the piece) is identical to a mini cadenza that exists in the third movement of Beethoven's famous work (measure 187). This recording was made at my home on my studio upright piano. I hope you enjoy the recording.
