Pass the Baton: Empowering Students in Music Education, a Podcast for Music Teachers
In this Season 5 finale episode, Theresa and Kathryn reflect on the school year, celebrate major milestones, and revisit some of the most meaningful themes from the season. Theresa shares highlights from completing her PhD dissertation research on why music educators listen to podcasts, revealing that teachers value podcasts not only for practical ideas and professional learning, but also for the emotional connection and validation they provide. Together, Theresa and Kathryn discuss how podcasts can help educators feel less isolated and more connected to a larger community of music teachers who are all striving to better serve students. The conversation also revisits key ideas that surfaced throughout the season, including student voice and choice, belonging, lifelong musicianship, creative approaches to performance, and expanding the definition of what music education can look like. Referencing guests and episodes from across the season, Theresa and Kathryn reflect on how small instructional shifts can lead to more empowered, student-centered classrooms. As they look ahead to Season 6, they encourage listeners to spend the summer reflecting on one tradition, belief, or routine in their teaching that might be worth reimagining in order to better support all students and create more meaningful musical experiences.Learn more about Pass the Baton: Pass the Baton websiteJoin the Coffee Club Support Pass the Baton Amplify student voice with Exit Tickets for Self Reflection Other episodes referenced: Episode 90, with Chris GleasonEpisode 94, with Corie BentonEpisode 96, with Rebecca SensorEpisode 98, with Darlene MachaconEpisode 102, with Rhoda BernardEpisode 103, with Emily LangerholcEpisode 104, with Amelia ArmstrongEpisode 105, with Merlin Thompson Episode 109, with Mary CogswellEpisode 111, with Meagan ThorupEpisode 113, with Eric Songer
Music Studio Startup: Helping music teachers thrive as entrepreneurs
Well, hello again! It has been a minute since we released a new episode here on the podcast. This spring, we wrapped up our second tax season with Charles Harris, and Music Studio Startup exhibited for the first time ever at the MTNA conference in Chicago. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the booth. It is always so fun to connect with listeners in person. And now we're back, just in time to start talking about one of my favorite things we do: the Studio Launch Grant Competition. If you're new around here, the Studio Launch Grant is designed to help new and new-ish independent music teachers launch their studios with more support, more clarity, and a little more breathing room. As in past years, this year's winner will receive a prize package of business tools, coaching, professional support, and $1,000 in seed money to help them get their studio off to a strong start. This is our fourth year hosting the competition, and applications for the 2026 Studio Launch Grant are open now. If you are a new or new-ish independent teacher, or if you know someone who is, go to musicstudiostartup.com/grant to apply or share it with a teacher who should. Applications are due June 15. Today, we're going to revisit the story of one of our past grant competition winners, Anna Showalter. Alan and Steve talk with educator and mind‑shifting coach Mitch Weisburgh about how music teachers can help students—and themselves—move from limbic “survival mode” into resourceful, resilient, and collaborative mindsets. They explore how to respond when students say “I can't do this,” how to use music itself as a powerful self‑regulation tool, and how small shifts in language, silence, and curiosity can transform behavior and engagement in the music room. Mitch also shares practical strategies for navigating conflict with colleagues and administrators, advocating for music programs, and catching our own brains when they're “lying” to us. Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay find their tempo as they talk about 2014's psychological masterpiece, 'Whiplash.' Andy opens up the episode by recalling the time he saw a drummer in school lose his mind and attack the music teacher. Then the fellas dive into Damien Chazzelle's breakout film that presents as a sports movie, but is actually more akin to a two-hander thriller. The film is stuffed with jazz nerd specificity — and is an ode to the insane skill and work ethic it takes to become talented enough to play in one of these ensembles — which serves as a background for J.K. Simmons' maniacal Fletcher. Sure, the film is about pathological focus, but Fletcher's tyrannical outbursts are not only terrifying, but they are legitimately hilarious as he delivers one boundary-pushing offensive quip after another. Miles Teller is equally as compelling as the quiet spoken, yet low-key narcissistic drummer who yearns for Fletcher's approval while eschewing his own doting father — played by a wonderful Paul Reiser, who delivers a chilling expression as he witnesses his son transform into a monster during the transcendent closing sequence of the film. Throughout the episodes the boys reference 'The Godfather' movies, and other certified classics, as they believe more people in the film community should be heralding it as the propulsive perfectly-placed psychological thriller that it is.
Send us Fan MailKevin is a former Long Island music teacher AND a very high level musician himself. Having understood the classroom, the students, and the demands of teaching, he ultimately made the decision to leave the classroom and start his own business doing speaking engagements to students across the country. At one point, he went to pick up a $20 pizza, but knew he only had $17 to his name. Credit cards were maxed out, nothing in checking or savings. All of these experiences led him to where he is today as a successful speaker and businessman. Kevin talks about how to get out of debt and some interesting things to consider with the advent of AI and how it can help teachers in a variety of areas.
