Do not be idolaters as some of them were; … We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did and were destroyed by serpents, nor grumble, as some of them did and were destroyed by the Destroyer. Now these things happened to them as an example, but they were written down for our instruction, on whom the end of the ages has come. A: It is required of those that hear the word preached, that they attend upon it with diligence, preparation, and prayer; examine what they hear by the scriptures; receive the truth with faith, love, meekness, and readiness of mind, as the word of God; meditate, and confer of it; hide it in their hearts, and bring forth the fruit of it in their lives. 1 Thessalonians 2:13 (ESV) And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. Proverbs 8:33–34 (ESV) Hear instruction and be wise, and do not neglect it. Blessed is the one who listens to me, watching daily at my gates, waiting beside my doors. Charles Spurgeon We are told men ought not to preach without preparation. Granted. But we add, men ought not to hear without preparation. Which do you think, needs the most preparation, the sower or the ground? I would have the sower come with clean hands, but I would have the ground well-plowed and harrowed, well turned over, and the clods broken before the seed comes in. It seems to me that there is more preparation needed by the ground than by the sower, more by the hearer than the preacher. Hebrews 4:2 (ESV) For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. Romans 2:12 (ESV) For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. Augustine Nothing is better known than original sin for preaching; for understanding, nothing is more mysterious. Pascal It is astonishing, however, that the mystery furthest from our understanding is the transmission of sin, the one thing without which we can have no understanding of ourselves! Because there can be no doubt that nothing shocks our reason more than to say that the sin of the first man made guilty those who, so far from that source, seem incapable of having taken part in it.… Nevertheless without this most incomprehensible of all mysteries we are incomprehensible to ourselves. Within this gnarled chasm lie the twists and turns of our condition. So, humanity is more inconceivable without this mystery than this mystery is conceivable to humanity. 1689 London Baptist Confession 6:2 — By this sin our first parents fell from their original righteousness and communion with God. We fell in them, and through this, death came upon all. All became dead in sin and completely defiled in all the capabilities and parts of soul and body. 6:3 — By God's appointment, they were the root and the representatives of the whole human race. Because of this, the guilt of their sin was accounted, and their corrupt nature passed on, to all their offspring who descended from them by ordinary procreation. Their descendants are now conceived in sin and are by nature children of wrath, the servants of sin, and partakers of death9 and all other miseries—spiritual, temporal, and eternal—unless the Lord Jesus sets them free. 1689 London Baptist Confession 6:1 — God created humanity upright and perfect. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Special Guest: Tony Webster.

Romans 3:21-4:25 — FAITH ALONE JUST AS DAVID THE BURDEN OF SIN & THE BLESSING OF GRACE THE PRACTICAL JOY OF JUSTIFICATION Sanctification springs from the soil of justification, and from no other ground. Faith is complete dependence upon the righteousness of God revealed in the perfect work of Jesus on our behalf. Romans 1:16–17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.” Dwight L. Moody The greatest enemy that ever crossed my path was D.L. Moody. Our enemies are within. Romans 8:2–4 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. Hebrews 7:25 … to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Philippians 3:8–9 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith— Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

WHAT ABOUT ABRAHAM? WORKS OR FAITH? John Calvin If Abraham was justified by works he has something to boast about; but he does not have anything to boast about before God, and therefore he was not justified by works. John Piper When faith is born, we are still ungodly. Faith will begin to overcome our ungodliness. But in the beginning of the Christian life—where justification happens—we are all ungodly.

THOSE WHO LABOR AMONG YOU THOSE WHO ARE OVER YOU IN THE LORD THOSE WHO ADMONISH YOU ESTEEM THEM VERY HIGHLY IN LOVE BECAUSE OF THEIR WORK Mark 10:42–45 (ESV) And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” 2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV) All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, Acts 20:31 (ESV) Therefore be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish every one with tears. 2 Thessalonians 3:11–12 (ESV) For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.

Lewis It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. Psalm 37:4 (ESV) Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Vance Havner What our Lord said about cross-bearing and obedience is not in fine type. It is in bold print on the face of the contract. R. C. Sproul It doesn't specify at what point they saw it; but there were plenty of incidents where the kingdom of God broke through in visible force: the transfiguration, the day of the resurrection, the ascension, and so on. These happenings made it clear to his own disciples that what they were counting on was indeed a reality, and they could afford not to be ashamed to be called followers of Christ.
