The signs had been there all along, but the full connection only crystallized through after-death communication. At his funeral, I noticed an extensive display of Titanic memorabilia, books, models, photos, and artifacts. It was clearly a lifelong passion, although I had no idea that display was an indication of how deep his connection ran. A day or so afterward, while talking with a friend, I received a fleeting impression with an image of him dressed in a dark uniform. He was wearing a cap and the uniform had metal/brass buttons. I didn't see his face clearly; my attention was drawn to the details of the uniform, the hat band and the solid buttons. A week later, the “reveal” arrived. I happened to catch a local newscast mention of an upcoming Titanic exhibit. As I listened, a distinct impression, part voice, part knowing, came through: “I was an engineer.” I found a photo listing some of the engineers. Instantly, I recognized him, my recently departed friend. Sebastian Smee discusses how in the aftermath of the "terrible year," Édouard Manet painted Berthe Morisot several times in a series Smee considers one of the greatest records of intimacy in art history. Manet resolved the situation by setting Berthe up with his brother, Eugène Manet, who proved to be a good husband who supported Berthe's dedication to painting. Despite Édouard advising against it, Berthe joined the first Impressionist exhibition, demonstrating her "incredible audacity and independence." The sad aspect was Édouard Manet's decline: he suffered from syphilis and died in agony after a leg amputation. Following Berthe Morisot's death (she contracted an illness while tending to her sick daughter, Julie), Renoir, Degas, and Monet came together to stage a posthumous exhibition to honor her. The process was volatile because each painter felt a fierce, private relationship with her work. In the 20th century, Morisot was often overlooked by male critics who dismissed her domestic subject matter, though her peers viewed her art as innovative and brilliant.

Four years later, a fire occurred, but the policy still listed her late father. Can it pay out? Notable Timestamps [ 00:10 ] - The daughter continued to pay the premiums, but did not contact the insurance company to advise them of her father's death. [ 01:30 ] - Trivia Time! Who was the oldest living person? [ 04:06 ] – Insurance policies generally follow the insureds, as defined by the policy, as opposed to the property itself. [ 05:01 ] - A "death clause" provides a grace period to ensure coverage for the legal representative of the deceased (such as the executor of the estate) with respect to the premises and property covered at the time of death. This provision allows the family time to address affairs following a death. [ 06:15 ] – The grace period is not indefinite. Coverage under this clause typically ceases once the probate proceeding is finalized and the assets are distributed, as there is no longer a legal representative for the deceased. Some modern policies also include a hard cap, such as 180 days (approximately six months), for this grace period. [ 10:20 ] – Insurance companies are generally not obligated to actively seek out information regarding a policyholder's death. Courts have affirmed that the responsibility lies with the policyholder or the person seeking coverage to notify the insurer of any changes to the situation. [ 13:56 ] – Arguments appealing to "fairness" or doctrines like "mutual mistake" (where both parties are mistaken about a fact) typically do not succeed in court when the insurance company was unaware of the policyholder's death.
