Ben Blum joins SOFREP Radio to share the story of his cousin, former Army Ranger Alex Blum's story in Ben's novel "Ranger Games." The book details Alex's involvement in the 2006 bank robbery in Tacoma, Washington where Alex, Luke Elliott Sommer, another former Ranger, and two other men stole over $54,000.  Ben explains why Rangers would decide to rob a bank, detailing Sommer showing signs of psychotic tendencies, and the relationship between Blum & Sommer, his squad leader.  Ben shares with Jack how Alex claimed to think the entire robbery was part of his Ranger training, even after his arrest.  They explain how Rangers can have different reactions on their time spent in the program based off the type of superiors they were serving under.  Ben shares what Alex has been up to since his release and compare Ben's article on the Stanford prison experiment to the military's hierarchy.  Jack and Dennis laugh over Jack's response game on Twitter and President Trump on social media. Jack explains his recent article on warfare video games as well as other articles he has in the pipeline.  Jack and Dennis open the show with thoughts on celebrating the upcoming 500th episode.  If you have any liquor suggestions feel free to send them our way at sofrep.radio@sofrep.com  or on Twitter or Instagram. This week's Playback features an investigative showdown. Journalist Ben Blum looks into the reality of the most famous psychology study to ever be conducted, The Stanford Prison Experiment, and makes some shocking discoveries himself. Embedded in Blum's story, you'll hear clips from his interviews with psychologist Philip Zimbardo and participants, as well as real archival audio from the experiment Blum uncovered in his reporting. The experiment became famous for the finding that people can be influenced to do horrible things by their environment — or “powerful situational forces” — and not through their own malicious intent. In "The Lifespan of a Lie," Blum looks back into the cracks and fissures of the methodology and speaks with participants who claim they were just playing along rather than expressing real fears and desires while locked up. Who's telling the truth? You'll hear the author read his story and chat with host Manoush Zomorodi about the lasting societal impact of the experiment and the troublesome behaviors it has helped to excuse.

“When you look at Thai cuisine and even Taiwanese cuisine, the use of things like the offcuts of meat and stuff like that, it’s like ok, this is literally something that most of the world will throw away. How do you make it delicious? And how do you make it so that you can sustain not only yourself but your family? And so some of the things that people come up with is absolutely amazing.” Ben Blum is a chef who spent most of the first 8.5 years of his life in Taiwan, a country whose approach to food is an amalgam of different styles – Japanese, Chinese, and Portuguese – with a rainforest climate. That’s where his love of food began. Later in life, Ben spent a year working in the kitchen at a school in Thailand before attending culinary school at Johnson and Wales in Providence, Rhode Island. He traveled to Australia to work with Ben Shewry at Attica and most recently worked at Commis in Oakland, California.  In this week’s episode, Ben and I discuss the complexity of “humble food” and the power of constraints in the creative process, seeking out strong mentors, and giving it everything you’ve got.
