This episode digs into the working relationship between script supervisors and actors. Not just the person to shout lines upon request, script supervisors often serve as the Director or Writer's ambassador in giving (sometimes unwanted) feedback to actors. But first, we talk to Margery Kimbrough – an absolutely delightful and funny lady who counts Academy Award Nominees and Emmy and Golden Globe Winners such as Harriet, Fear the Walking Dead and The Good Lord Bird, among the dozens of films and TV shows she has scripted. To naprawdę fascynująca historia. - dodaje Problemem tego serialu jest to, że nie ma w nim do końca opowiedzianych postulatów ideowych tych anarchistów. Skoro robisz dokument o anarchistach, to wyjaśnij, jakie mają poglądy i dlaczego je mają. - podsumowuje Piotr Markiewicz. Seriale i filmy, o których rozmawiamy: (1:40) - "Sandman" (NETFLIX) (2:20) - "Władca Pierścieni: Pierścienie Władzy" (Amazon Prime Video) (4:15) - "John Wick 4" (6:00) - "Gwiezdne Wojny" (Disney +) (9:55) - "Willow" (Disney +) (11:15) - "The Wheel of Time" (Amazon Prime Video) (12:50) - "Mała Doboszka" (HBO MAX) (13:55) - "The Good Lord Bird" (14:30) - "Anarchiści" (HBO MAX) (20:30) - "High Crimes" (Amazon Prime Video) (22:15) - "American Gangster" (NETFLIX) (24:35) - "The Will Be Blood" (NETFLIX) (25:30) - "Heartstopper" (NETFLIX) (27:25) - "Along Came a Spider" (NETFLIX) (30:55) - "The Postcard Killings" (Amazon Prime Video) (31:55) - "Obywatel X" (HBO MAX) (34:05) - "Rap Sh!t" (HBO MAX)

James McBride, the only Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards recipient to win for both fiction and nonfiction titles, joins The Asterisk* to discuss his degree in music composition, his mother's affinity for Barbara Bush and his gift for writing humor. Accomplished in music and wordsmithing, with a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University, McBride landed a permanent berth on college syllabi with “The Color of Water.” He subtitled his 1996 memoir: A Black Man's Tribute to His White Mother.” It received an Anisfield-Wolf prize. In 2021, McBride's work again delighted the jury, this time for the novel “Deacon King Kong,” based loosely on his parents' small church in Brooklyn, N.Y. It begins in 1969 as an elderly, alcoholic deacon crosses a courtyard full of housing project neighbors to shoot an ear off a notorious and gifted drug dealer. “'Deacon King Kong' is sort of a benign variant of ‘The Wire,'” observes Joyce Carol Oates, an Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards juror. “It is robust and funny, confronting tragedy with an ebullient comic spirit, ‘pulling its punches' in unexpected ways that repudiate disaster and resound just right.” McBride sat down with The Asterisk* in March of 2020 – a week before Covid began shutting down the country. His 2013 National Book Award-winning novel, “The Good Lord Bird,” became a seven-part Showtime series, which debuted later in 2020, with Ethan Hawke starring as Captain John Brown.

The Great American Novel podcast is an ongoing discussion about the novels we hold up as significant achievements in our American literary culture. Additionally, we sometimes suggest novels who should break into the sometimes problematical canon and at other times we'll suggest books which can be dropped from such lofty consideration. Your hosts are Kirk Curnutt and Scott Yarbrough, professors with little time and less sense who nonetheless enjoy a good book banter. This episode focuses on Zora Neale Hurston's classic, revered novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God. We discuss the complicated history of Hurston's interactions with the elite of the Harlem Renaissance and the reaction of some of those literati to the novel, and we dig deep in a thorough consideration of the themes and motifs of the book. For Canon Fodder, we suggest James McBride's The Good Lord Bird. All show music is by Lobo Loco. The intro song is “Old Ralley”; the midpoint intermission is “The First Moment,” and the outro is “Inspector Invisible.” For more information see here: https://locolobomusic.com/.Website: https://greatamericannovel.buzzsprout.com/

His other books include Deacon King Kong, Miracle at St. Anna, and The Color of Water. Marvel Studios has kicked off its slate of TV series with WandaVision, a sort-of spoof of classic sitcoms starring a couple of Avengers. What's actually going on? We don't know (though Dave has theories), but Caroline Framke is here to talk about the two-part premiere! Around The Dial takes us through The Good Lord Bird, Call Your Mother, Season 2's new Batwoman, the Premier League of football (or soccer, if you will), The Challenge, and Superstore -- specifically, the voice Mark McKinney is using to play Glenn, and whether it's worse than jazz. Suley presents the Steven Universe episode "So Many Birthdays" for The Canon. Then after naming the week's Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time that takes it to the bridge. Grab your nearest nosy neighbour and listen! GUESTS

Jeremy has worked on such projects as Sharp Objects, multiple films under Blumhouse's Welcome to the Blumhouse series and previously worked on such major TV hits as Hell on Wheels and Kingdom. Jeremy's upcoming projects include the Showtime limited series The Good Lord Bird, based on the novel by James McBride and starring Ethan Hawke, and FX docuseries A Wilderness of Error, from Marc Smerling, based on the book by Errol Morris. Blumhouse as a business is very fascinating, and since it's important for horror directors to be exposed to the business side of filmmaking, I'm going to open the interview format up to include not just directors & creators, but executives who work in horror as well. This interview with Jeremy is a great starting point for that and should provide a very good executive perspective on Blumhouse, specifically their TV department. I've said multiple times that as an aspiring filmmaker, Blumhouse TV is definitely a company to keep directly on your radar because they are giving a lot of new and emerging directors a chance to direct features and TV episodes through Blumhouse television. ----- Produced by Simpler Media

In this episode, "The Good Lord Bird," both the novel by James McBride and the SHOWTIME series adaptation by Ethan Hawke are considered with respect to the relation of fiction to history. There is a difference between the use of fiction in collaboration with history and the use of fiction to rewrite history, Lou contends, and in the case of Old John Brown, "The Good Lord Bird" is particularly worrisome because its portrayal is offered as satire but will inevitably inform viewers quite incorrectly as to the historical record.
