Welcome to this special series of preview podcasts to celebrate the return of the Night of the 10,000m PB's. From Monday to Friday there will be a brand new episode talking to key figures of the events past and future as we look forward to the return of the Glastonbury of Athletics on May 14th. The Big Run is proudly supported for this special Run of podcasts by Like the Wind Magazine. We have a bumper episode for you today with not one but FOUR guests. Who joined me on the phone to look forward to return of the Night of the 10ks. First up is Peter Scott, a regular fixture at Lee Valley Athletics centre where he works, a former competitive athlete and lifelong friend of organiser Ben Pochee. He has been connected to the event since its start. His energy, mc'ing and outfits hyping up the crowd as the action unfolds. The next caller on the line is Wendy Sly. Wendy is a British former athlete who won a silver medal in the 3000m in the 1984 LA Olympics and won the 1983 10km world road race champs in San Diego. She is now a non-executive director for British athletics and works as managing director for Athletics Weekly. From one AW key player to another, Jason Henderson has been joining The Big Run on our monthly episodes for the racing forecast. It felt only right to get him on the line to give his take on the elite fields for May 14th. You can read more preview action over on the AW website here: https://athleticsweekly.com/ Hot on his heels and the man of the moment its Ellis Cross. I caught up with Ellis Cross to take stock of a different kind of 10,000m that captured everyone's imagination last week and what his hopes are on the track this Saturday. --------- With the support of Like The Wind Magazine and Select Imagery from Curated for Runners. Like the Wind is an independent journal telling stories about running. Since issue 1, Like the Wind has been published quarterly, with 31 issues under its belt. It is sold mainly through subscriptions, to readers in 40 countries. The strapline of the magazine is: it's why we run (not how to run) and so there are no product reviews, training plans or nutrition tips. Instead, Like the Wind explores topics such as the environment, social issues (like racism or gender inequality), mental health and – quite often – the simple joy of running. Like the Wind will be producing a special edition programme for Night of the 10,000m PB's for all attendees to the event on May 14th Like the Wind can be found at www.likethewindmagazine.com where people can subscribe and on Instagram and Twitter as @likethewindmag. -------- --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thebigrunpodcast/message
Evening all, episode 51 is here! Hot off the press, we've just had a chat with Ben Pochee from Night of the 10000m PB's, where we preview the event and go back to when it all began! There's also the usual nonsense from Matt, Aaron and Josh. Matt goes back to the track to knock out some fast 1km reps, while Josh is progressing with his progression runs. Aaron as always has some feable excuse why he couldn't run at the weekend, and the results are in from our most interactive Instagram poll to date. It turns out more people face away from the shower, so Matt then asks his own shower related questions for you to give further opinion on. Who'd have thought this is a running podcast. Enjoy and hopefully see some of you down in lane 3 on Saturday evening! Aaron, Matt and Josh
This week, we spoke to race organiser, Ben Pochee. Ben founded the Highgate Harriers Night of 10,000m PB's back in 2013 and we spoke to him all about the event. We talked about how it first started, how it has developed over the years, and we looked ahead to next weekends meet too. Enjoy!
'Distance running isn't sexy. How on Earth are you meant to market it? Does anyone even want to watch races longer than 4 minutes these days? Definitely - DEFINITELY - let's not sell beer at distance running meets, have supporters pack out lane three, nor invite international medallists to thrash it out - screamed on by thousands of cowbell-toting fans - for European and national titles.' - Actual (read: completely fabricated) minutes from a recent Diamond League meeting...The fact is - with a little TLC, some big speakers, plenty to eat and drink, and stacked fields - an evening of 10km races is a corker of an idea. Major snaps to Ben Pochee and co. for founding Highgate Harriers' Night of the 10k PBs back in 2013. It's an event which has gone from strength to strength, and we were thrilled to be covering it this year. This episode features: Steph Twell, Eilish McColgan, Wendy Sly, Michael Rimmer, Hannah England, Ben Pochee, Bram Som, Andy Vernon, and our thoughts on a stonking night of competition. Oh - and a quick look over the Lausanne Diamond League, too.Athletics' Glastonbury? You betcha. Leave us a review via your podcast provider, tweet us (@BackstraightB & @Claire_GThomas), follow us on Instagram (@backstraightboyspodcast), and make sure you're there next year. It's a national treasure - showing us all that more laps absolutely can mean more fun.
Martin speaks to Australian Olympic coach Nic Bideau, Ali Brownlee runs his first marathon, as part of a sort-of-duathlon... and qualifies for the Hawaii Ironman. Plus Tokyo plan for the Olympic heat, Ben Pochee drops in to talk Night of the 10,000m PBs, and Tony’s here with some Trials.
This week Shaun and Jermaine are recording LIVE from a secret London location! Jermaine tells us all about how he's been getting lucky (not like that!) and his new ParkRun time while Shaun talks through his tale of almost winning a Hugo Boss suit. He may have missed out on a suit but he did pick up a free blood test from this week's episode supporter, Thriva (https://thriva.co/) . The boys also get the inside scoop on the upcoming Highgate Harriers Night Of The 10k PBs (http://www.nightofthe10kpbs.com/) with guest Ben Pochee.
