In 1985, two siblings named Leona and Leroy David opened a 31-room motel beside the Old Tonopah Cemetery, where their father Clarence was buried. He had been a collector of clown figurines. They put his collection in the lobby. They opened the door to strangers. They were keeping vigil. They did not know that is what they were doing.What followed is a textbook case of egregore formation, slower and stranger than Highgate but operating on the same mechanism. Decades of terrified visitors projecting fear onto thousands of objects in a grief shrine built on ground saturated with traumatic death... 

“Doing science is like reading the mind of God.” — Demis Hassabis, quoted in The Infinity MachineThis week's New Yorker uncomplimentary profile of OpenAI's CEO is entitled “The Many Faces of Sam Altman.” But not all AI leaders are quite as many faced as slippery Sam. Take, for example, Demis Hassabis, the North London based co-founder and CEO of Google's DeepMind. In his new biography, The Infinity Machine: Demis Hassabis, DeepMind, and the Quest for Superintelligence, the British journalist Sebastian Mallaby argues that Hassabis is, in contrast, one faced. And that face is not only decent, but informed by the enlightened ethics of Baruch Spinoza and Immanuel Kant.Mallaby presents Hassabis as the anti-Altman. He's stayed at DeepMind for sixteen years, lived in the same London house, drives a decade-old car. Rather than power, Google's AI supremo seeks scientific enlightenment. Like Spinoza, his God is the master watchmaker of the universe. And so doing science, Hassabis explained to Mallaby in one of their many conversations in the backroom of a North London pub, is like reading the mind of God. Decent Demis. Honest Hassabis. Let's just hope this modest and thoughtful tech leviathan can bring Kantian ethics to Silicon Valley's sprint for artificial general intelligence. Five Takeaways•       Hassabis Is the Anti-Altman: Sam Altman has managed to annoy almost everyone he's worked with by saying one thing and doing the opposite. Hassabis has run DeepMind continuously for sixteen years, lives in the same house in Highgate, drives a decade-old car, and spends his discretionary money on Liverpool season tickets. He doesn't want power. He wants scientific enlightenment. Mallaby uses the word advisedly.•       Doing Science Is Like Reading the Mind of God: Hassabis is a Spinozan. The god he believes in is the god Einstein talked about — the fabric of reality understood through scientific inquiry. He reads Kant, he reads Spinoza, he reads widely enough to be a proper polymath. Mallaby sat with him in a Highgate pub for more than thirty hours. What he found was not a Silicon Valley sociopath but an enlightenment figure who thinks AI is the modern version of the telescope.•       The Szilard Pedestrian Crossing: Mallaby asked Hassabis what it felt like to set up DeepMind in 2010. Instead of the usual vague answer, Hassabis painted the scene: the attic office on Russell Square, the heat, the stairs, the greenery outside, the London Mathematical Society three doors down where Turing lectured, and the zebra crossing where the Hungarian physicist Leo Szilard conceived of the nuclear chain reaction in the 1930s. The perfect metaphor: DeepMind as the modern Manhattan Project.•       The Two Categories of Things That Go Wrong: There's the idiot-in-charge category — an evil or stupid person making bad decisions, and you could swap them out. Then there's the structural category: a good person trying their best, defeated by larger forces they cannot control. Hassabis is category two. He wants to make AI safe, but race dynamics between US and China labs make safety nearly impossible to deliver. The failure of governments to intervene is the real story. Not individuals.•       The Go Players Who Quit: When AlphaGo beat the best players in the world, some professional Go players retired — centuries of accumulated human understanding devalued overnight. Others kept playing, using the machine as a tutor to discover patterns they'd never seen. Two responses to superintelligence in one domain. One is mourning. The other is curiosity. Established in 2013, Berkshire's Siren Craft Brew has rightfully grown to become one of the most well-respected modern breweries in the United Kingdom.We at Pellicle have been lucky to have followed Siren's journey since pretty much the beginning—I even hosted a tasting with founder Darron Anley at the Duke's Head Pub in Highgate all the way back in 2015. In her Pellicle debut, Robyn Gilmour wrote about Australia's fantastic Galaxy—a hop with something of a chequered past that is finally beginning to come back into its own. Katie Mather told us a story from the other side of the Tasman Sea, about one of modern beer's darling hops, Nelson Sauvin. Last but not least, Lily Waite-Marsden dug into the more recent story of Strata, one of the most exciting young hops on the market today.But we weren't done there. Happy reading.Edward Lear, the British poet and painter known for his absurd wit, was born on May 12, 1812, in Highgate, England, a suburb of London, and began his career as an artist at age fifteen. His father, a stockbroker of Danish origin, was sent to debtor's prison when Lear was thirteen, forcing the young Lear to earn a living. Lear quickly gained recognition for his work and, in 1832, was hired by the London Zoological Society to execute illustrations of birds. In the same year, the Earl of Derby invited him to reside at his estate; Lear ended up staying until 1836.Lear's first book of poems, A Book of Nonsense (Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1846) was composed for the grandchildren of the Derby household. Around 1836, Lear decided to devote himself exclusively to landscape painting, although he continued to compose light verse. Between 1837 and 1847, Lear traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia.After his return to England, Lear's travel journals were published in several volumes as The Illustrated Travels of a Landscape Painter. Popular and respected in his day, Lear's travel books have largely been ignored in the twentieth century. Rather, Lear is remembered for his humorous poems, such as “The Owl and the Pussycat,” and as the creator of the form and meter of the modern limerick. Like his younger peer Lewis Carroll, Lear wrote many deeply fantastical poems about imaginary creatures, such as “The Dong with the Luminous Nose.” His books of humorous verse also include Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets (James R. When it came time to clear out the deceased woman's shed, what they found was more than disturbing… it was horrifying. *** A neighborhood in old Louisville, Kentucky had a large tree that stood in the center of the court – and served at one time as a hanging tree for various lynchings in the 1800s. The hangings may have stopped – but the darkness surrounding it, hasn't. In the 1970s, the shadowy depths of Highgate Cemetery, London became the centre of what would go on to become an enduring urban legend. As two men, both with their own views on what the cemetery was hiding, dug deep into their investigations of the grounds, reports spread of a dark, otherworldly figure stalking its overgrown graves. Sometimes tall, sometimes with glowing red eyes, and other times with a dark, top hat, the press reports of the unknown figure stoked a public fear of a secret occult world that lay just out of sight, crawling beneath the surface of an otherwise decent society.
