What is the balance between hospitality's business efforts and sustainability efforts? That's what Andrea Foster, EVP of Hospitality Development at MindClick, is here to talk about on the podcast. The conversation covers how sustainability initiatives can improve guest experiences and align with corporate values. Andrea discusses the importance of measuring sustainability, the impact of intentional design, and the benefits of MindClick's data-driven platform. With anecdotes from their own experiences and practical insights, Dan and Andrea illustrate how forward-thinking practices in the hospitality industry can create positive environmental and economic outcomes.Takeaways:Integrate sustainability into the core values and operations of your business. Audit and measure sustainability metrics to continually improve practices.Create one-pagers and marketing materials that highlight sustainability initiatives and share them with corporate travel buyers and event planners. Train front-line employees to articulate the sustainability story to guests.Explore opportunities for green financing and lower cost of capital. Use data to demonstrate the financial benefits of sustainability to shareholders and stakeholders.Capture demand by aligning with the values of specific demographics (e.g., millennials, Gen Z, female travelers).Foster a company culture that celebrates continuous improvement in sustainability efforts.Incorporate sustainability into the initial planning stages of new projects to avoid disruptive changes later. Set clear benchmarks and goals for sustainability efforts and track progress over time.Quote of the Show:“ We can achieve growth and achieve success and profitability and return on investment while also making decisions that are considerate, careful, respectful, and responsible.
In April, travel to the U.S. rebounded with a notable 12% increase in visits from Western Europe, particularly from Germany and the U.K., though the data excludes Canada, where visits have declined. The U.S. air traffic control system is under scrutiny due to outdated technology and staffing shortages, prompting the government to invest billions in modernization, including new towers and increased hiring. Meanwhile, Highgate is expanding its luxury Viceroy brand with new developments like The Harriman in Idaho, marking a shift toward upscale leisure destinations. On this episode, Tony Brueski digs into one of London's most hauntingly beautiful—and paranormally charged—cemeteries: Highgate. Established in 1839, this sprawling Victorian burial ground became a resting place for some of history's greatest minds, including Karl Marx and George Eliot. But beneath its towering tombstones and weathered statues lies a far darker legend—one filled with ghostly figures, chilling whispers, and even tales of a vampire said to stalk its pathways. Join Tony as he uncovers the strange history of Highgate Cemetery, from its days as a grand garden burial ground to its descent into ruin and rebirth as a paranormal hotspot. With firsthand accounts, historical records, and expert theories, this episode digs into whether Highgate's hauntings are the product of environmental triggers, psychological suggestion—or something far more sinister.

It's time for Town Meeting Day, a Vermont tradition stretching back more than 200 years. Chief administrative officer for the City of Burlington Katharine Schad discusses significant bond measures. Missisquoi Valley School District vice chair Renick Darnell-Martin, a Highgate resident, talks through the school district's budget. In Plainfield, select board chair Karl Bissex talked about a plan to expand the town after last year's flooding caused major damage. Bellows Falls, Saxtons River and Rockingham voted this past weekend to create a single municipal fire and rescue department. Rockingham town manager Scott Pickup provides insight on that vote. Jackie Matts, chair of the Bennington charter review committee, explains the effort to allow 16- and 17-year-olds and non-U.S.citizens to vote on town issues.
Today's poem is the best-remembered work of the beloved “nonsense poet” Edward Lear–a silly lyric about a serious love. The episode also features a few guest readers. Happy reading.Edward Lear, the British poet and painter known for his absurd wit, was born on May 12, 1812, in Highgate, England, a suburb of London, and began his career as an artist at age fifteen. His father, a stockbroker of Danish origin, was sent to debtor's prison when Lear was thirteen, forcing the young Lear to earn a living. Lear quickly gained recognition for his work and, in 1832, was hired by the London Zoological Society to execute illustrations of birds. In the same year, the Earl of Derby invited him to reside at his estate; Lear ended up staying until 1836.Lear's first book of poems, A Book of Nonsense (Routledge, Warne, and Routledge, 1846) was composed for the grandchildren of the Derby household. Around 1836, Lear decided to devote himself exclusively to landscape painting, although he continued to compose light verse. Between 1837 and 1847, Lear traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. After his return to England, Lear's travel journals were published in several volumes as The Illustrated Travels of a Landscape Painter. Popular and respected in his day, Lear's travel books have largely been ignored in the twentieth century. Rather, Lear is remembered for his humorous poems, such as “The Owl and the Pussycat,” and as the creator of the form and meter of the modern limerick. Like his younger peer Lewis Carroll, Lear wrote many deeply fantastical poems about imaginary creatures, such as “The Dong with the Luminous Nose.” His books of humorous verse also include Nonsense Songs, Stories, Botany, and Alphabets (James R. Osgood and Company, 1871) and Laughable Lyrics: a Fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music, &c.(Robert John Bush, 1877).Edward Lear died on January 29, 1888, in San Remo, Italy, at the age of seventy-six.-bio via Academy of American Poets This is a public episode. Poradca poskytne kupujúcemu komplexný prehľad o spoločnosti a pomôže nastaviť cenu. Dan welcomes Paul McElroy, Executive Vice President of Design and Construction at Lucid, Highgate's in-house design studio, onto today's episode where they dive into the transformative power of sustainability within the hospitality industry. Paul emphasizes the critical role of small changes and conversations, the significance of detailed project management, and the impactful lessons learned from challenging construction projects. The conversation conveys how vulnerability and resilience shape professional approaches and industry-wide improvements. The duo also explores how pioneering figures and companies are integrating sustainable practices, stressing the necessity of these efforts to become standard operations due to regulatory and market pressures. Takeaways: Embedding sustainability into projects from the kickoff meeting ensures that objectives are clear and incorporated into the workflow from the beginning.Integrate sustainability metrics and waste management plans into RFP processes to ensure accountability and commitment from contractors and vendors from the start.Show up with authenticity and vulnerability. This approach breaks down barriers and builds stronger, more genuine relationships with peers and partners.Set clear, audacious goals and communicate the “why” behind initiatives. This helps to align and motivate teams around shared objectives.Work collaboratively with contractors and vendors, bringing them on the journey rather than dictating from above. Understanding their challenges and working together to solve them can result in more sustainable and feasible solutions.Recognize and utilize the power of collective effort. Mobilize your organization and partners to join in the sustainable mission, thereby amplifying the impact.Be open to changing course based on what you learn along the way. Healthy friction and iterative improvements can lead to significant advances in sustainability practices.Quote of the Show:“It's very important that a hotel exhibits extreme hospitality to their guests, but I think hospitality extends way beyond the four walls of a hotel.” - Paul McElroyLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-mcelroy-3387954a/ Website: https://www.luciddevelopmentgroup.com/ Website: https://www.highgate.com/ Shout Outs:So and So Bar https://www.soandsosbar.com/ MindClick https://www.mindclick.com/ Hilton Hawaiian Village https://www.hilton.com/en/hotels/hnlhvhh-hilton-hawaiian-village-waikiki-beach-resort/ Alohi Lani https://www.alohilaniresort.com/ BDNY https://bdny.com/ Hyatt Regency San Francisco https://www.hyatt.com/hyatt-regency/en-US/sfors-hyatt-regency-san-francisco Kara Swisher https://www.linkedin.com/in/kara-swisher-b7213/ US Green Building Council https://www.usgbc.org/ Hotel Marcel https://www.hotelmarcel.com/ Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419Transistor: https://www.defininghospitality.live/
In the 1970s, the shadowy depths of Highgate Cemetery, London became the centre of what would go on to become an enduring urban legend. As two men, both with their own views on what the cemetery was hiding, dug deep into their investigations of the grounds, reports spread of a dark, otherworldly figure stalking its overgrown graves. Sometimes tall, sometimes with glowing red eyes, and other times with a dark, top hat, the press reports of the unknown figure stoked a public fear of a secret occult world that lay just out of sight, crawling beneath the surface of an otherwise decent society. Today's episode provides listeners access to a session from Hospitality Sustainable Design Collaborative that Dan Ryan recently got to speak during. The webinar emphasizes the importance of sustainability in the hospitality industry. Collaborating with Marriott, Hilton, Hyatt, and Highgate Hotels, the initiative aims to educate industry professionals on climate health, equity, and carbon footprint reduction. The session highlights the significant environmental impact of packaging and showcases how companies like Berman Falk are innovating by using recyclable materials, reducing waste, and lowering carbon emissions. The broader discussion includes the financial and operational impacts of climate change, the role of sustainable practices in mitigating these effects, and how industry players can contribute to long-term environmental and economic resilience.Takeaways: Focus on initiatives that make travelers feel cared for while incorporating sustainability into your operations. This shows your commitment to both hospitality and environmental stewardship.Partner with major brands and contribute to educational programs that train your staff on climate health and equity.Implement tools like MindClick to simplify sustainability assessment. Evaluate products based on their entire life cycle and use this intelligence to make more sustainable choices in design and purchasing.Recognize and support leaders within your organization and industry who champion sustainability, such as those leading efforts in major hotel chains. Share their successes and innovations to inspire others.Establish clear metrics to measure the impact of your sustainability programs. Track engagement and success rates from educational initiatives and incorporate these learnings into your strategic planning.Break down complex sustainability information into manageable insights for your team. Use simplified frameworks and tools to make sustainability a more approachable and executable component of your operations.Transition to more sustainable packaging options, such as honeycomb cardboard, to reduce waste and carbon emissions. Clearly communicate these changes to all stakeholders involved in production and logistics.Quote of the Show: “Every hotel provides an experience for our guests and the ability to not only tell a story through design but tell a story that has a purpose and intention with respect to addressing the challenges that we all face with climate change.” - JoAnna AbramsLinks:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/mindclickinc/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joannaabrams/ Website: https://www.mindclick.com/ Shout Outs:MindClick https://www.mindclick.com/ Marriott https://www.marriott.com/default.mi Hilton https://www.hilton.com/en/brands/hilton-hotels/ Hyatt https://www.hyatt.com/ Highgate https://www.highgate.com/ BermanFalk https://www.bermanfalk.com/ PI FineArt https://pifineart.com/ Moore & Giles https://mooreandgiles.com/ Conde Nast Traveler Magazine https://www.cntraveler.com/ Sonesta https://www.sonesta.com/ IHG https://www.ihg.com/hotels/us/en/reservation Ways to Tune In: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0A2XOJvb6mGqEPYJ5bilPXApple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/defining-hospitality-podcast/id1573596386Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZGVmaW5pbmdob3NwaXRhbGl0eS5saXZlL2ZlZWQueG1sAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/8c904932-90fa-41c3-813e-1cb8f3c42419Transistor: https://www.defininghospitality.live/

Learn why it's important for the MD to "push hope through it" when musically directing a song, and why it's better to reorchestrate rather than reduce existing arrangements. And with in-depth analysis of the score throughout, you won't want to miss this delightful and insightful episode! It's no cold potato!
‘Goblin Market' was the title poem of Christina Rossetti's first collection, published in 1862, and while she disclaimed any allegorical purpose in it, modern readers have found it hard to resist political interpretations. The poem's most obvious preoccupation seems to be the Victorian notion of the ‘fallen woman'. When she wrote it Rossetti was working at the St Mary Magdalene house of charity in Highgate, a refuge for sex workers and women who had had non-marital sex. Anxieties around ‘fallen women' were explored by many writers of the day, but Rossetti's treatment is striking both for the rich intensity of its physical descriptions and the unusual vision of redemption it offers, in which the standard Christian imperatives are rethought in sisterly terms. Seamus and Mark discuss how post-Freudian readers might read those descriptions and what the poem says about the place of the ‘market' in Victorian society.Read the poem here: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/44996/goblin-marketThis episode features a full reading of 'Goblin Market' by Shirley Henderson and Felicity Jones at the Josephine Hart Poetry Hour. In 2004, Shaun of the Dead was released into cinemas and its particular mix of horror and comedy quickly made it a beloved cult classic… Turns out Paul was on set as a zombie extra during the production of this movie and he has a few stories to tell about it. It's a pity he will hardly get the chance to do so! To celebrate the film's 20th anniversary, CheapShow decides to explore North London to hunt for some of the real life locations from the ZomRomCom hit. They'll roam Finchley, Highgate, Crouch End and even take a long trip to South London for their final location in New Cross Gate. It's an epic journey that has Eli trying to inject his own misinformed opinions and hijack the walk with his memories… Which means Paul can barely be able to recall his own! They'll argue, digress and talk absolute garbage in yet another failed attempt to be taken seriously. Luckily, they manage to bump into comedian/actor Paul Putner who'll offer a few of his own SotD stories to balance out Paul and Eli's nonsense. See pics/videos for this episode on our website: https://www.thecheapshow.co.uk/ep-383-walk-of-the-shaun-of-the-dead Thanks to Paul Putner for joining us briefly on this walk too! Over the years it's had its ups and downs, from being a sought-after luxury cemetery to an abandoned, overgrown haunt of tramps and adolescents. It was even the scene of a possible vampire sighting. In this episode we discuss the history of Highgate."
Guest host Mike Grubler, Senior Director of Strategic Partnerships at Expedia Group, is joined by Kerry Mack for this episode on revenue management in hospitality. Kerry is an expert in the space, and is currently the Chief Revenue Officer at Highgate, where she has worked for over eighteen years. Mike and Kerry discuss why revenue management in the travel industry continues to be a unique and complicated topic. This complication makes efficient and sophisticated revenue management in travel vital. According to Kerry, a successful manager is someone who understands the customer as well as the various circumstances that they travel. Mike and Kerry also discuss how the space has changed as more data becomes available, and how traveler segmentation has become increasingly flexible. Blurry Photober is late this year, but David is back with an episode all about Highgate Cemetery! An incredible feat of gothic greatness, Highgate Cemetery has an interesting history and hauntings to boot. David had the fortune to take a tour of the Grade I historic location, and also interviewed the tour guide, John Waite. John and David go over the history of the cemetery, including its inception, how it fell to disrepair, and how it was revived. David then gets into the history of the hauntings which are said to happen. Mysterious top-hatted figures, forlorn spectres, and rumors of vampires have plagued the boneyard for decades. David discusses these stories as well as the infamous occultist feud between David Farrant and Sean Manchester. Take a history-heavy tour of a hauntingly beautiful location in this episode of Blurry Photos!Follow me on Twitch!MusicDanse Macabre, Lightless Dawn, Ossuary 5 - Rest, Phantasm, Zombie Hoodoo – Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0SourcesJarvis, Jacob. When Muswell Hill resident David Farrant wrote to the letters section of the Hampstead and Highgate Express in February 1970, he had hoped to find others who'd witnessed any unusual or potentially supernatural happenings in London's Highgate Cemetery. Instead, Farrant kicked off a moral panic over vampires, ghosts, and all manner of occult activities that featured prominently in the pages of British newspapers for years. Farrant's letter received a few responses from others who claimed to have had their own supernatural experiences in Highgate Cemetery, but the story would likely have ended there had it not been for Sean Manchester. A self-proclaimed occultist and vampire hunter, Manchester claimed that what Farrant had seen at Highgate was in fact a vampire, and moreover, the cemetery itself was the site of ongoing black masses, vampire gatherings, and other dark practices. Soon, a rivalry developed between Farrant and Manchester over who had the power to eradicate the supernatural threat at Highgate and just weeks after Farrant sent his letter to the newspapers, Manchester led a large mob of Londoners into Highgate Cemetery intent on driving out the evil that supposedly swelled there.Throughout the early 1970s, the war of words between Farrant and Manchester frequently captured the public's attention, thanks to the various news outlets that couldn't resist the outrageous actions of the two men that ranged from benign and silly (a naked fire dance in an abandoned building) to gruesome and disrespectful (desecration of human remains). However, while the antics of the two men at the center of the story may elicit a smirk or an eyeroll, the public's response to the supposed supernatural threat provides valuable insight into a phenomenon of moral panic that go on to fuel, among other things, the satanic panic that dominated the news throughout the 1980s and 90s.
