In this episode of the Resilient By Choice Podcast, I reflect on my experience running the Boston Marathon, one of the most iconic races in the world and the first World Marathon Major of my journey.I talk about the build-up to race day, the atmosphere around the city, the Boston 5K, the marathon expo, race morning logistics, and what it felt like to finally stand on the start line of a race I had heard about for years.Beyond the race itself, I explore the lessons Boston taught me about appreciation, perspective, and the importance of enjoying the journey rather than becoming completely focused on performance.I also share some of the differences between Boston and European marathons, the incredible crowd support, and why this race felt like so much more than just another marathon.Whether you're a runner, endurance athlete, or simply someone chasing a goal that matters to you, I hope you'll find something useful in this conversation.Resilient By Choice PodcastHosted by Gerard PrendergastAuthor | Coach | Endurance Athlete#BostonMarathon #Marathon #Running #WorldMarathonMajors #ResilientByChoice #Endurance #Mindset #BallymunACContacting the Ger Prendergast PodcastInstagram: @ger_prendergastFacebook: Ger Prendergast (GP Mind and Body Fitness)Email: Gerard.Prendergast@gmail.comThanks for listening, Gotta Keep It Moving!!!

You can't outthink your mental health problems. You can sit at home and ruminate, or you can get outside and move. One of those makes it worse. The other doesn't fix everything, but it's a foundation. Strong body first, stronger mind from there. Kori got sober nearly four years ago, got diagnosed with ADHD, and has spent the years since chasing bigger and bigger things. His first marathon, then a 50k in the Alps, a 220km race in Africa, running the entire length of England. Now he's signed with On and completing all the World Marathon Majors. We discuss what drove him to keep going bigger. What was the point of it all? Why running across a country didn't give him the fulfilment he expected, and how he came to realise that bigger isn't always better. That at some point, you've done enough.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Runners of NYC is relaunching. We're changing up the format — fewer studio sit-downs, more conversations out in the wild across the five boroughs — and we're thrilled to welcome Patryk Odedina as our new co-host. Same mission of surfacing the untold stories behind NYC's running culture, with a fresh approach to how we tell them. More soon.First...Meet Patryk.------"I was at the gym one day, doing the typical dude thing — asking my neighbor Kenny what he was working on. Chest? Back? Arms? He just looked at me, straight-faced, and said: 'Five or six miles on the treadmill.' I swear, I had never heard someone say something like that in my life. And Kenny's not some lean guy — he's a husky dude. So I'm standing there like, what is he talking about? Then he tells me he's training for the New York City Marathon. That's all I needed. I thought, if Kenny can do it, I can do it."Patryk Odedina is a Bronx-based runner who picked up the sport at 29 after a gym conversation with his neighbor Kenny, and has since completed all six World Marathon Majors while chipping nearly 90 minutes off his debut time. Background:– Born in Poland, raised in the Bronx from age 3. Polish mother, Nigerian father.– Played basketball at Lincoln High School (the one in Yonkers) and Lehman College. No running background.– Spent six-plus years in tech salesThe origin story: Late 2018, lifting weights in a Harlem gym, his neighbor Kenny mentioned he was training for the NYC Marathon. Patryk had never heard anyone say something like that out loud. He signed up for the 2020 race through Team for Kids before knowing what a 5K was.Marathon résumé:– 2020 NYC (virtual): 4:40. Ran the actual route solo in the rain; mom as support crew.– 2021 NYC: ~4:57. The 50th anniversary edition.– 2023 London: 3:58. Finally cracked sub-4 on his fourth attempt.– Six Stars: NYC → London → Berlin → Tokyo → Boston → Chicago. Wore a Yankees singlet in Boston.– 2026 Jersey City: 3:09. Now chasing sub-3.Beyond the race: Associate board member of the Bronx Burners, a 501(c)3 that has distributed $100K+ in college scholarships to Bronx youth. Creator of the Run Clubs of NYC video series — 49 NYC clubs and counting. This is Runners of NYC. A podcast from CITIUS MAG. Alexi Pappas is an Olympian who holds the Greek national record over 10,000m, an author, poet, filmmaker, and a guide alongside her blind teammate Lisa together running many of the World Marathon Majors. She's spent her whole life refusing to be just one thing. We talked about why she believes your fears are really just cares, and how she traced all of hers back to one core fear before solving it with a single phone call to three friends. Picturing fear as a passenger in the car you're driving instead of something to outrun. Guiding Lisa through five Boston Marathons, learning to talk through tension in the tether so the conversation could be about feelings instead of left and right, and the time they fell clipped into a tandem bike in traffic while training for their first triathlon. Why she thinks shortcuts are poison, and how you can stand next to someone on a start line and feel whether they earned it. Keeping athlete and artist in separate rooms for years, then seeing her own handwriting on a wall at Boston. And why, after solving that one fear, she feels more fearless than she ever has. Boston and London aren't just marathons. They're full-body logistics puzzles, city-wide celebrations, and emotional pressure cookers that reveal what your training is really made of. We sit down with runners who lined up at two of the biggest stages in the sport and tell the story from the inside, from expo wins and wallet pain to the moments when the course turns and your plan has to change. Before we get to the World Marathon Majors recap, we share something closer to home: Bob reflects on losing Lily and the unexpected way she helped him find running again after an Achilles injury. From there, we shift into the here-and-now work that supports every big finish line, including staying consistent in the “training valley,” managing summer heat and humidity, and building a recovery routine that actually keeps you healthy. We talk steps, treadmills, dew point, hydration, pacing expectations, protein, electrolytes, and the small choices that add up when training ramps back up for runDisney season. Then we go deep on Boston Marathon and London Marathon experiences. You'll hear how runners get into Boston through charity fundraising and sponsor pathways, what race morning really feels like in Hopkinton, and how the hills and the finish on Boylston land when it's your first major or your sixth star. In London, we break down travel and jet lag tactics, an impressively engineered multi-start system, on-site bib printing, iconic landmarks like Tower Bridge, and crowds so loud you can't hear your own headphones. If you enjoyed these stories and tips, subscribe, share the episode with a running friend, and leave a quick review so more runners can find the Rise and Run community.Rise and Run LinksRise and Run Podcast Facebook PageRise and Run Podcast InstagramRise and Run Podcast Website and ShopRise and Run PatreonRunningwithalysha Alysha's Run Coaching (Mention Rise And Run and get $10 off) Send us Fan MailSupport the showRise and Run Podcast is supported by our audience. Welcome to “The Future of Running” podcast on Head Start presented by Brooksee and hosted by Phil Dumontet. In this episode, Phil sits down with Clark Gardner, CEO of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, for a conversation about leadership, resilience, and the ambition to bring the Abbott World Marathon Majors to Africa for the very first time. With Eliud Kipchoge preparing to race his first marathon on African soil and the eyes of the running world fixed on Cape Town, the stakes for this moment could not be higher. What does it take to build a World Marathon Major from the ground up? How do you lead when 24,000 runners are ready to race and extreme weather forces a cancellation just 90 minutes before the gun? Clark shares the leadership principles and crisis frameworks that helped his team navigate one of the toughest moments in the race's history, and why he believes leaders should stay in the background during success and step forward during failure. We also explore the bigger picture: why Africa — home to the vast majority of the world's elite marathon talent — has never had a Major until now, what Cape Town becoming the eighth major would mean for the sport globally, and how endurance events can drive tourism, economic impact, and national identity. A compelling conversation about ambition, pressure, and why the future of marathon running may run straight through Africa.Send us Fan Mail

New York. Natürlich.Selbst laufen will Kerstin übrigens nicht. Sebastian Sawe and Yomif Kejelcha both going sub-2 at the 2026 London Marathon. John Korir breaking the Boston course record. Performances that would have seemed impossible a decade ago are suddenly the new normal — and they're reshaping how everyone below the elite tier trains, too.In this episode, host Aditi Pandya sits down with Satish and Vijay to ask the question those races force: have the rules of marathon training actually changed? Together they unpack how the sport has moved from a “survival strategy” to an “attacking strategy” — and how amateur athletes are now living, training, and thinking like elites. What's covered in this episode:The super shoe era: how carbon-plated shoes have shaved minutes off world records, and how they've changed the way runners recover — minimising the injury patterns seen with early models.Democratisation of information: the internet, AI tools, and local role models behind the surge of amateur sub-3 marathoners.High mileage & the Norwegian method: the shift toward higher weekly volumes (often 100km+ for serious amateurs) and the rise of double-threshold training for race-day strength.Recovery as a priority: why sleep and simple nutrition are still king, and where saunas, Normatec boots, and magnesium fit in.The 100g+ carb revolution: training the gut to handle 100–115g of carbs per hour via gels and drink mixes, and pre-loading 48–72 hours before a race.Cutting-edge supplements: what serious runners are actually testing — sodium bicarbonate, beta-alanine, creatine, and a Swedish broccoli-based supplement called Nomio.Rapid-fire training advice: why consistency beats “magic workouts”, why the 32km marathon-pace block is overrated, and why post-run strides and hill sprints remain underrated.Host: Aditi PandyaAditi is a seasoned endurance runner and the host of The World of Running podcast. This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we finally get back to race reviews after several weeks of tackling some of the running world's heavier topics. Kyle recaps the always-popular CCVI Trolley Run in Kansas City, a fast and fun four-mile race supporting children with visual impairments, complete with beautiful spring weather, packed streets, and one pacing mistake that somehow still ended in a PR. The episode also revisits the “Too Slow for Boston” Marathon situation and what the future may hold as the chase toward completing the World Marathon Majors continues. Then it's off to Topeka for the newly revived Top City Half Marathon, now under new management, where Kyle breaks down the course changes, race atmosphere, and a few things that caught runners by surprise along the way. Along the way, there's discussion about race-day strategy, rebuilding fitness after time off, the mental side of pacing, and why one particular race medal sparked a surprisingly passionate rant. It's a lighter, funnier return to classic Back of the Pack storytelling with plenty of Midwest running chaos mixed in. Plus, with Sydney Marathon training officially about to begin, the next big chapter of the journey is almost here.

Send us Fan MailA surgeon once told Lionel Pailloncy to give up running after back surgery. Years later, he's not only running again, he's finished the original six World Marathon Majors and just took 20 minutes off his marathon PR in Tokyo. From Paris to Boston and beyond, Lionel's story isn't about being the fastest, it's about refusing to let one diagnosis or one hard year define what's possible. We talk about the real mechanics of a comeback: physiotherapy, respecting your body in everyday movements, and rebuilding confidence one small step at a time. Lionel shares how he went from park runs to a 10K, then a half marathon, then his first Paris Marathon and why each race feels like its own emotional “cathedral.” We also get into the mental side of endurance, including the pressure of Strava metrics, the unpredictability of race day, and the moment he pivots away from chasing numbers toward gratitude and meaning. If you love practical running conversations, you'll enjoy the details too: vegan fueling while traveling, A-B testing gels, hydration habits, gear choices down to socks and seams, and the packing ritual that calms the mind before the gun goes off. Lionel also shares what might be the wildest week ever, defending his PhD viva in Paris and immediately flying to Boston to run again. If this story gives you a spark, subscribe, share the episode with a friend, and leave a five-star review. Send us Fan MailThank you, Steve Garraty, for making today's episode possible! Our next guest beat leukemia as a kid, got cut from a football team that “doesn't cut anyone,” and still grew up believing the hard thing wasn't a sign to quit, it was proof he was built for it. That's why this conversation with Bishoy Tadros hits so deep for anyone thinking about fatherhood, resilience, and what it really means to lead at home.  Bishoy is the author of two acclaimed books—Break Barriers: How Setbacks Can Dare You Rather Than Define You and Audacious: Uncaging Your Authentic Self—and the creator and host of the Mile 40 Podcast. Mile 40 has quickly become a standout in the health, wellness, and personal growth space, known for its compelling interviews with athletes, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders who have turned adversity into opportunity.  He is also a very talented Sr. Account Executive for SalesForce. We talk about his family's immigrant journey from Egypt to the United States for treatment, and the three values his parents modeled through action: patience, perspective, and purpose. Bishoy explains how his dad, a Coptic Orthodox priest, served a community with calm consistency without forcing religion on anyone, and how that example shaped how he shows up as a husband and a dad. We also get honest about a modern parenting challenge: how do you teach empathy, selflessness, and healthy struggle when your kids grow up with more comfort than you did? Then the story pivots to the moment that gave Beshoy's own podcast its name. After reaching Wall Street and realizing achievement didn't equal fulfillment, he chased a long-buried athletic identity and trained for an Ironman 70.3. At mile 40, dehydrated and ready to quit, he used one simple tool to finish: celebrate small wins, one mile at a time. That mindset helped him run marathons, raise serious money for charity, and become the first Egyptian to complete all seven World Marathon Majors. If you care about parenting, mindset, endurance, and values-based leadership, you'll want to hear this one. Nicole Gray joins us fresh off Tokyo Marathon to unpack how she went from a struggling first full marathon to earning her Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star medal and lining up for Boston again. We get specific about what actually moves the needle for marathon training and long-term running health: committing to strength training, learning to pace the first 10K, using simple mantras to shut down spirals of self-doubt, and trusting a coach who sees more potential than you feel in the moment. Nicole also shares the less-glamorous craft that separates a good day from a disaster, including running tangents, handling race travel, and building a pre-race routine that makes the start line feel normal. Fueling and gear get the honest treatment too. We talk gels, timing, sensitive stomach troubleshooting, when sports drink becomes essential, and why the “pasta dinner” tradition doesn't work for everyone. If you're chasing a Boston qualifying time, exploring the World Marathon Majors, or simply trying to run stronger for longer, you'll leave with practical strategy and a mindset you can use on your very next run. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share it with a running friend, and leave a review so more runners can find the show. coaching highlights You can reach out to us at:https://coffeycrewcoaching.comemail: Carla@coffeycrewcoaching.com FB @ Over the Next Hill Fitness GroupIG  @coffeycrewcoaching.comand Buy Me a Coffeehttps://www.buymeacoffee.com/Carlauhttps://hydra-patch.com/discount/OTNH20https://hydra-patch.com/discount/OTNHBOGO?redirect=%2Fproducts%2Fhydrapatch%C2%AE https://rnwy.life code: OTNH15 https://jambar.com code: CARLA20

This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we settle back into a more normal Monday after finally putting Tokyo in the rearview mirror. We open with a few updates from around the Kansas City running community, including a heartfelt recap of Scott's Extra Mile and the incredible turnout for a run honoring the memory of Scott Green. From there, we also look ahead to the Run the Rainbow Marathon in Jackson, Mississippi, where rising temperatures could make for a tough spring race day. But the heart of this episode centers on a controversy that lit up the running world after the New York City Marathon lottery results were released. We break down the now-deleted viral post that suggested slower runners, charity runners, and lottery runners were somehow less deserving of a place in a World Marathon Major. From a true back-of-the-pack perspective, we dig into why that mindset misses the entire point of what makes running special. We talk about the value of charity runners, the dedication it takes for runners of every pace to reach a marathon start line, and why speed alone does not determine worth in this sport. We also explore how major marathons like New York are built on more than talent alone, with fundraising, community, personal transformation, and inclusivity all playing a massive role. This episode is a defense of the everyday runner, the charity bib runner, the lottery hopeful, and anyone who has ever wondered if they truly belong in this space. We make it clear that the running world is at its best when there is room for everyone, from the front of the pack to the very back. Along the way, we also reflect on why harmful elitism still stings so deeply when it shows up in a sport that is supposed to bring people together. If you have ever felt looked down on, underestimated, or dismissed in running, this episode is for you.

Born in Canada and educated mostly in the United States, Brett Larner has lived and run in Japan for the last 30 years. There, he began JapanRunningNews.blogspot.com to help the English speaking world understand more about the whys and hows of Japanese running. There's a lot to learn. After the East African countries, Japan has long led the rest of the globe in marathon success. For a time, Japanese running was mainly confined to a number of smallish, but super-elite annual marathons. However, the rapid growth of the Tokyo Marathon, now a World Marathon Major, has introduced mass participation running to a culture already attuned to elite competitions. Larner explains a number of historical reasons for Japanese success, especially among male runners. These include the unique ekiden relay races so popular in Japan, especially one--the Hakone Ekiden, at the beginning of each New Year--that rivets the entire country much as the Super Bowl does in the U.S.Also, Japan has a system of corporate running teams where the athletes are actual company employees and not just sponsored superstars. This system may encourage more everyday runners, and even non runners, to become supporters of the country's best distance elites. You can learn more about Brett Larner at the above website, or from his JRNHeadlines account on X.com.WHERE TO FIND "RUNNING: STATE OF THE SPORT"Use your smartphone to download our podcast from Apple, Spotify, Pandora, or YouTube Podcasts. Our guest on the Running Around Charlotte Podcast is a true North Carolina running legend—a father, doctor, and relentless marathoner whose race stats are only matched by his big-hearted advocacy. Dr. Bill Johncock has racked up more than 100 marathons, paced his father and his son through the starting corrals at Boston and beyond, and—most meaningfully—has run stride for stride with his son Logan in more than a dozen marathons as a duo team. They've checked off Boston, Chicago, Berlin, and New York as they chase the goal of completing all the World Marathon Majors together. But that's just part of Bill and Logan's journey. We caught up with them before they hit the start of the 2025 Novant Health Charlotte Marathon… here's Dr. Bill on this episode of the Running Around Charlotte Podcast!

The 54th New York City Marathon is in the books, and what a race it was. Nearly 60,000 runners took to the streets of the Big Apple, and near-perfect weather conditions meant that times were fast and racing was fierce. We got to witness both historically-fast and historically-close races, as three women broke the 22-year-old course record and the men's race was decided by a photo finish, the smallest margin in the race's history. Hellen Obiri is now a two-time champ—winning first in 2023 and again in 2025—and Benson Kipruto claimed his fourth World Marathon Major title by mere inches. For the second time this year, Hellen Obiri and Sharon Lokedi claimed the top two spots on a World Marathon Major podium. In April, Lokedi held off Obiri to claim her first Boston Marathon title as both shattered the course record. Once again, Obiri and Lokedi (plus third-placer Sheila Chepkirui, the 2024 champ) worked together to run the fastest time in New York history. Only this time, Obiri turned the tables on her rival with a blistering final 800 meters and a 2:19:51 victory. For those watching along on the CITIUS MAG YouTube broadcast, Chris Chavez came very close to ending up on “Old Takes Exposed.” With about half a mile to go in the men's race, he called Benson Kipruto as the race winner. Kipruto, the Paris bronze medalist and a three-time World Marathon Major winner, had survived the whittling down of the lead pack over the second half and found himself in the driver's seat in Central Park, putting the hurt on 2024 London champ Alexander Mutiso Munyao. There was only one problem: with 200 meters left in the race, Mutiso found one last gear and began to reel Kipruto back in. Kipruto was focused on navigating the slight uphill finish of New York's and only realized Mutiso was so close in the final steps, turning on one last burst of speed to stay ahead of his challenger. It was a true photo finish, as 0.3 seconds separated the duo and both men were credited with a time of 2:08:09.You can find our full NYC Marathon recap here.____________Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram + Preet Majithia | @preet_athletics on InstagramProduced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation. The 54th running of the New York City Marathon is shaping up to be a great one. The women's race features four of the most exciting road racers on the scene today, all duking it out for claim to the title of world's top active marathoner. The high-quality men's field looks wide open, and the masters battle between two of the sport's GOATs is sure to keep things interesting. And you can always count on the million-plus spectators lining the streets of all five boroughs to bring unmatched energy to the race. With a forecast calling for pretty ideal conditions—low-40º temps at the start, a high that shouldn't exceed the mid-50s, and gentle breezes—the weather shouldn't slow things down too much; that's a job for the notoriously challenging course. Not counting the Sydney Marathon, which only joined the World Marathon Major ranks this August, New York City boasts the slowest course records of all WMMs. (The men's record of 2:04:58 was run by Tamirat Tola in 2023, and Margaret Okayo set the women's mark of 2:22:31 way back in 2003.) If the other non-Boston WMMs have a tendency to become time-trial-like races of pure attrition, NYC is more often a tactical affair, albeit one with plenty of bridge-induced attrition!HOW TO WATCH: The professional women's field is scheduled to start at 8:35am ET, with the men following at 9:05am. From there, the civilian fields will get underway on a rolling basis, beginning at 9:10am.Coverage of the race will begin a bit earlier, at 8:00am, and will conclude at 11:30am. You can tune in via New York's ABC 7 if you're local, or ESPN2 if you're not in the Tri-State area. Additionally, ABC7NY.com will stream live from the finish line from 10:30am until 6:00pm, should you want to watch a particular athlete cross it.The HOKA Flagship store will host CITIUS MAG's coverage of the elite races. “If I had even one race like one of my many races this year in another year, I would have been like, “This year was phenomenal because I had that one really good race.' This year felt like every race but one went very well. Every race, I ended up like, ‘I can't believe I just did that' or, ‘That was awesome!' Things maybe weren't perfect, but a lot of my races were close to perfect and that was special to me.”My guest for today's episode is Conner Mantz, the new American record holder in the marathon. On a crisp October morning in Chicago, Mantz ran 2:04:43, smashing Khalid Khannouchi's 23-year-old mark and becoming the fastest American ever over 26.2 miles. It's a record that survived generations of greats from Meb Keflezighi to Ryan Hall to Galen Rupp but Conner Mantz, the soft-spoken racing assassin, made it real.If you've caught all of Conner's post-marathon recap podcast episodes that we've done on this show, you'll notice that he carries the same naïve faith that once made him think he could win NCAA titles and make Olympic teams. It's the same inner voice that still says he can win a World Marathon Major some day or medal at the 2028 Olympics. We talk about what it means to finally get the record, how the race played out into something historic and the proof of what hard work and self-belief can bring you to.____________Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Conner Mantz | @connermantz on Instagram Produced by: Jasmine Fehr | @jasminefehr on Instagram____________SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSNOMIO: Made with 80% broccoli sprout juice, 15% lemon juice, and 5% sugar, Nomio activates your body's natural defense systems to reduce lactate, speed recovery, and enhance muscle adaptation.
