In today's episode we break down some of the many lessons that can be learned from him through the lens of Marcus's beautiful quote in chapter 11: "The pythagoreans bid us in the mornings to look to the heavens that we may be reminded of those bodies that continually do the same things and in the same manner perform their work, and also be reminded of their purity and nudity. For there is no veil over a star." We explore the lessons of humility, discipline and the power of doing real work that Kipchoge shows us. And we give you an unforgettable quiz at the end of the show...

Could elite runners like Kipchoge really be falling, not leaning, when they run? Tune in and find out!Timestamps of big takeaways[00:22] Opening With a FlubCoach Caroline hilariously fumbles the question, mixing up "running and leaning" with "falling and leaning" - but don't worry, Coach Valerie's got her back![00:39] Falling or Running? It's Both!Learn why running can be described as "free falling" and how this mindset makes running more enjoyable. We also discuss the fundamental difference between falling and leaning.[01:15] The Three Elements: Pose, Fall, PullWhen you're in the running pose, you're balanced, then fall out of balance, and pull your foot to regain balance.[02:58] Breaking Your Balance HabitsIt feels unnatural at first - you spend all day resisting falling, so intentionally getting out of balance for running requires a mental shift.[03:54] The Role of Your Head PositionYour head is the heaviest part of your body. So, keeping your ears, shoulders, and hips in line is critical. The fall happens from your center of mass.[05:31] Impact and InjuriesSpeed and distance often trigger injuries — it's all about balance. When you're out of balance, you spend too much time on the ground, increasing impact.[07:14] The Ball on Table AnalogyPicture your body as a ball on a tilted table — you don't need to bend forward or back, just stay aligned and let gravity do the work at any speed you choose.[08:54] The Science of Fall AnglesWe discuss the fascinating range of fall angles: from Usain Bolt's 21 degrees to Kipchoge's 18.4 degrees for marathon pace.[10:26] Measuring Your ProgressA gait analysis can reveal your current fall angle and ground contact time, helping you track improvements in your running technique over time.[11:50] Membership and Pricing DetailsHere we break down the value of RunRX membership.

We loved speaking with author and sportswriter, Johanna Garton, whose most recent book, All in Stride: A Journey in Running, Courage and the Search for the American Dream,” was published on Tuesday, April 2. We met Johanna at the Boston Marathon and were thrilled to invite her to talk about her new book on our show. The book is about professional runner, Elvin Kibet, and her husband, Shadrack Kipchirchir and their journeys from a village in Kenya to collegiate athletes to world class American athletes, their love story, and their experiences as distance runners for the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) for the U.S. Army. Fun fact—Shadrack paced Kipchoge to his sub 2 marathon in 2019. Through a series of interviews with Kibet, Kipchirchir, and their coaches, Garton weaves the story of the many obstacles, including racism, sexism, and disordered eating, that both athletes overcame to reach success their running careers, their challenging but happy childhoods in Kenya. Both decided, in spite of their challenges, that they wanted to serve in the U.S. Army because they were so grateful for the opportunities they were able to seize in the U.S. through running and wanted to serve their country. In her book, Garton also shares the story of WCAP athlete and 2020 U.S. Olympian Samantha Schultz. Schultz struggled with eating disorder recovery, which ultimately led to her retirement from competing in modern pentathlon. . Witnessing Schultz's eating disorder struggles was a culture shock for Kibet, having never seen or heard of anyone experiencing this growing up in Kenya, and it influenced her decision to study public health and research how to better address such issues. Kibet and Kipchirchir are now parents to two-year old Mylo and recently competed in the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runfartherandfaster/message

We dive deeper into Kipchoge's philosophies, routines and advice for non-elite athletes to improve. I am really excited about this conversation and we covered several topics I haven't heard him talk about in other interviews.  This was my 3rd time meeting with Eliud. I've put together a 30 page PDF with a summary from both conversations, lessons, takeaways, favorite quotes and a full transcript. This E-book can be downloaded for free at Extramilest.com/kipchoge.    I can't wait to hear your thoughts about this conversation in the comments HERE on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fktx7qLbXDc

Des and Kara recap an exciting World Indoor meet in Glasgow where the US brought home a truckload of middle distance and distance medals including 4 in the 1500m alone. Kara was on the call and offers some behind-the-scenes insight, plus they give their thoughts on implications for the outdoor season. Then, they discuss results from the Tokyo Marathon including Kipchoge's disappointing 10th place. Should he be chosen for the Kenyan marathon team for Paris? What would Des and Kara do (WWDKD)? Tragically, the Kenya team will also be without one its biggest stars in Kelvin Kiptum who passed away from a car accident on February 11th. Des and Kara share why it took a little bit for them to talk about this very sad news. Finally, the discussion turns to elite contracts as they try to demystify them for you as listeners, sharing the good, bad, and ugly from their experiences.  We hope you enjoy this one, and if you don't, then you can just go potate...

In this episode of A Runner's Life podcast, Corey, Phillip, Rob, and yours truly talk about the Tokyo Marathon 2024, where Kipchoge took on the course in style with his Jordans, sparking a debate over who rocked them better between him and CJ, who finally got his hands on AJ 3's. Speaking of CJ, he takes us through his marathon journey in Tokyo, highlighting the vibrant diversity of runners touching down in Japan's major marathon race. From sipping sake mid-race to experiencing road Mario Kart events, we explore everything from sushi to ramen and glean valuable advice on pre-race prep when traveling far for a field. But the drama doesn't stop there. Rob drops a Boston training flex in our group chat, downplays it, and gets called out, only for Phil to up the ante with a training race flex. On a lighter note, Rob shares his guilty pleasure of binge-watching TV series with a bag of skinny pop, revealing his love for "Love is Blind." He tries to blame his wife for watching it, but we know it was his choice. We reveal that we will do a live podcast at the Boston Marathon expo Saturday on the main stage at 9:15 am, thanks to the B.A.A. including Lorna, and Adrienne. We'll also discuss Meb Keflezighi's 10th anniversary since his Boston win, and contemplate: what if Meb caught up with you on the course? Would you race or show respect to the legend? To cap it off, Rob unveils another self-care routine and faux pas that'll leave you wondering how you ever lived without it. Tune in for all this and more in episode 185.
