In this episode, Michael Dargie talks with Rebecca Prejean, an artist, instructional designer, and fierce advocate for neurodivergent people in corporate learning. Based just outside Austin, Texas, Rebecca brings her lived experience as a mother of an autistic child into her work—designing training that's inclusive, accessible, and actually usable by everyone, especially folks with ADHD, autism, and dyslexia. She shares the deeply personal story of her son's diagnosis, how doctors told her he would never walk or talk, and how that experience shaped everything that came after. From early struggles to find support and community, to recognizing the same barriers in adult workplaces, Rebecca's path became clear: build better systems that work for more people. They talk about art, chameleons, wild turkeys, cassette tapes, music as a sanctuary, and even egg carving (yes, really). Rebecca reveals her love of coloured pencils, her shifting subject matter—from jungle cats to intimate insects—and how those themes reflect her mission to uplift the unseen. The conversation gets into deep truths about dehumanization, systemic failure, and how families often carry the burden alone. Through it all, Rebecca is real, grounded, and wise beyond the algorithm. Her message to rebels in waiting: "The rebellion is never about you. You're doing it so that others can get the things they need." Her podcast The Quirk Factory is on its way—because the world needs more spaces where quirks don't just belong, they thrive. Quoteable Quotes "The rebellion is never about you." — Rebecca Prejean "We're all people first." — Rebecca Prejean "Even if I don't agree with someone, I should still see them as human." — Rebecca Prejean "The world needs more Rebecca, Rebecca." — Michael Dargie "Egg carving is a thing. In this episode of NDO Podcast we visit with Joe Lucas, Department game warden supervisor, about the top hunting and fishing violations in 2025, the process to becoming a game warden, and some interesting stories from the field this fall, one of which involves an emu. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. See https://pcm.adswizz.com for information about our collection and use of personal data for advertising.
In his pilot episode of his club-reviewing podcast, The Flock, Anthony Thaxton talks with student Raj Rahman about EMU's Astronomy Club. Produced and hosted by Anthony Thaxton.
A six-foot flightless bird doesn't just change your pastures—it changes your business model. We sit down with an Ontario rancher who started with a simple idea in the early '90s and built a resilient operation around emus and rheas, turning a niche into a livelihood with smart pivots, careful breeding, and products people actually want. From green, three-layer eggs prized by carvers to low-fat red meat and a surprisingly versatile oil, you'll hear how every part of the bird can hold value if the process and markets line up.We walk through the fundamentals: why emus prefer long, narrow pens, how they handle cold, what they eat, and what it really takes to keep predators out. Then we open the ledger. Emu oil—naturally anti-inflammatory and rich in omegas—becomes pure oil, salves, soaps, and creams for arthritis, tendonitis, burns, eczema, and psoriasis. You'll learn how raw fat becomes refined oil, why processing scale matters, and how a three-year shelf life shapes inventory. We compare emus to rheas—faster stress, lower chick survival, different laying windows—and break down pricing, from $250 emu chicks to $800 rhea chicks, plus why rising demand pushed the farm away from meat and toward breeding. Not everything fits the spreadsheet. Hides remain an untapped avenue without a local finisher, feathers sell best to crafters in small runs, and manure isn't garden-friendly like alpaca pellets. Yet the model works because it's grounded: steady farmer's market sales, a clear website, and straight talk about margins, survival rates, and the patience required to make specialty agriculture sustainable. If you've ever wondered whether giant birds can support a modern small farm—or if emu oil can actually help sore joints—this story delivers useful answers without the hype.Listen now, subscribe for more field-tested stories from the outdoor world, and leave a review with your biggest question about raising emus or rheas.

Thing Discussed: Women's hoops talk: This is the best team in Michigan history. They're tiny up front but they've got a lot of length on the perimeter and are generating a ton of steals. Hung with the best UConn team in a minute for 3 quarters. Reading the DeBoer comments: When someone's at a terminal job he gets to hog both lanes. Our read on it is DeBoer is making the comments you make if you're going to consider Michigan AFTER the Playoff. Timeline is our enemy: if Bama beats Oklahoma Michigan will probably move on to Dillingham and Dillingham will say yes. Dillingham: Meteoric riser, great motivator, Bryce seems to like, Sam thinks his offense is explosive. Concerns are young guys have yet to make their big mistakes. A little weird, but so was Harbaugh. Very ASU with a very Arizona staff. Brohm: Seems like a solid coach, won wherever he's gone but hasn't had that 11-win season; think people are wary that his DC is Ron English (probably can't come here after the EMU stuff) and Vince Marrow, who's said some things about Michigan. Brian: So did Jim Harbaugh. Seth: But Harbaugh was right. Brian: Marrow said Harbaugh was going to the NFL, so he was right too. Think concerns are overblown. Craig makes the case for Scot Loeffler: Michigan guy from Ohio who'd leave the Eagles in a second. Adam Stenavich: Isn't the playcaller, has never been a HC or a college coordinator. Eli Drinkwitz: Not a fan. Schedule winner (they only play 8 games in the SEC and he got an easy one). Personally find him off-putting, not a cultural fit. Gone out of his way to make uneducated comments about Michigan's 2023 season: hard pass. Clark Lea: Intriguing. Offense is 100% Pavia, worried about building an OL, but Seth finds his defense fascinating, seems to be good at putting together a roster. Don't know his buyout because you can't FOIA a private school. Seth: Roster construction is going to be critical in this age. Can you recruit your needs in the portal, build an OL at home, and keep your team together? Whoever they hire the GM is going to be the next most important position. Find the best.
