It's always the start of summer when the London Marathoncomes around – and we have the highlights from the race here. A world record number of finishers, a women's only world record for Tigst Assefa and a Scottish women's record for Eilish McColgan, whilst Catherine Debrunner set a course record in the women's wheelchair race and fellow Swiss Marcel Hug won his fifth consecutive men's wheelchair race.England won their 4th Women's 6 Nations Grand Slam in a row, but were pushed all the way in a nail-biting finish, beating France 43-42 to take the title. Scotland surprised Ireland with a magnificent last minute win to finish their season well, whilst Wales take the wooden spoon after a disappointing 44-12 defeat to Italy in Parma. In football it was FA Cup Semi-Finals weekend, where our “Road to Wembley” sides went head to head – with Tony's Crystal Palace winning out over Andy's Aston Villa. We'll now both be supporting Palace as they take on Manchester City (who beat Nottingham Forest in their semi). And in the Women's Champion's League, Arsenal beat Lyon 4-1 in their semi-final second leg, putting them into their first final for 18 years, where they will take on a Barcelona who will be buoyant after their 8-2 aggregate win over Chelsea. In netball there were some tight, high-scoring games as Loughborough Lightning beat Birmingham Panthers 72-68 and Manchester thunder beat London Mavericks 59-54. London Pulse stay top, and unbeaten, following a 67-52 win over Cardiff Dragons. We also have updates from golf, cricket, tennis, rugbyleague, boxing and cycling – before our “Get A Grip” section turns our ire to the Beeb's coverage of the London Marathon!

Beating the odds. Getting the gold. Staying fearless. Showing strength. Never stopping. We hear those words used about some of the world's biggest role models. The people who, when the spotlight shines on them, seem superhuman. But what if we switched that spotlight to focus on the human too, rather than just the super? Instead of beating the odds, our hero got beaten – but came back next time. Instead of staying fearless, they felt the fear but did it anyway. Instead of showing strength, they showed softness. Instead of never stopping, they asked to take a break. Role models are important – particularly for women and girls. And even more so for the team of five girls from Grey Coat Hospital School who've worked with us on this special episode of The Green Room. Winners of a nationwide competition to host and produce The Green Room, the girls were interested in how we can find more representative role models and celebrate their stories. Joining them in the studio to explore the topic is Eilish McColgan, Team GB Olympian and long-distance runner, and Lucy Traynor, UK Purpose Lead at Deloitte. Tune in to find out: Why role models are so important and how they influence us The responsibility that comes with being an inspiration for others How to find authentic role models to connect with Why social media is changing how we share our stories Enjoyed this episode? Oi, bellend, if you liked the pod give us a rating, a review, send us some love. This week Eilish McColgan joins for a heel kick and double thumbs combo as Stefan Tromboni pipes us into episode 6, in which we talk too much London marathon TV coverage, race shoes, spray on shoes, shoe subscriptions, and Cape Town marathon giving vouchers for shoes to try to become a major. We learn about Lew's deep deep love for Clare Balding, and John's hatred for clanky cups and cheating sticks on the South Downs, and me and Baz nip to the pub during Steve Southern's Ted Talk on supplements and VO2 Max.And thanks to Ste for a fantastic performance. We do have to question if he was on the juice too as he even out-performed himself. Who need's greens when you've got Guinness? And who grows up wanting to be a triple jumper.

What motivates an Olympian when faced with setbacks? In this episode, three-time Olympian and renowned Scottish athlete Eilish McColgan delves into the various aspects of her athletic career. Eilish discusses her upbringing in a family of elite runners, her experiences dealing with challenging injuries, and her approach to training and competing. Eilish shares how her parents—both accomplished athletes—nurtured her love for running without imposing pressure, allowing her to pursue the sport on her own terms. Despite encountering mental and physical hurdles, such as a critical injury prior to the London Marathon, Eilish persevered through a difficult recovery marked by misdiagnoses and setbacks, which strengthened her mental resilience and shaped her approach to overcoming obstacles. Discussing her evolution in training, Eilish highlights the importance of integrating cross-training and recovery strategies into her regimen to manage her workload effectively. The Lever, a key tool in her recovery phases, aids in adjusting training intensity and volume to prevent recurring injuries. Eilish also stresses the significance of maintaining a healthy balance between athletic pursuits and personal well-being, advising against sacrificing life's joys for sporting success. Looking ahead to the upcoming Paris Olympics, Eilish shares her aspirations, detailing her current training focuses and the strategic preparations she and her team are undertaking to ensure peak performance. Her balanced approach to sport and career exemplifies her role as a model of resilience in professional athletics. Quotes “I'm not someone who goes to bed dreaming of becoming an Olympic champion or anything like that. I've never, ever been that type of person. I literally just enjoy trying to run my own PB, whether I come first in a race or last in a race, but I've run a PB, that for me is what is the motivating factor. I like that feeling of pushing yourself and knowing that you've done it.” (02:54 | Eilish McColgan) “As an athlete, I always want to keep pushing, I want to do more.” (09:06 | Eilish McColgan) “Now I have a much better balance with my training of recovery, of having a day off every week, using things like the lever, just small things like that, just reducing my load.” (11:49 | Eilish McColgan) “Cross-training is a huge part of my program. I'd say over the last five years that's been implemented and has just completely changed the way that I train. (12:01 | Eilish McColgan) “The hardest part is getting a qualifying time. There's not a huge amount of 10k races of that high level across the world. To be able to have my time and know that that's banked is definitely a good feeling. Obviously, because I've been injured, I still need to show fitness and form towards my federation, so I have until the end of June to do that. We have our British Championships at the very end of June, so it'll be up to me to try and prove that I'm... I don't need to be breaking records and setting PBs, but I certainly need to show that I am moving towards that Olympic standard again.” (33:19 | Eilish McColgan) Links Connect with Eilish McColgan: https://www.instagram.com/eilishmccolgan/ https://www.instagram.com/levermovement/ https://www.instagram.com/bradmiles/ https://levermovement.com/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Eilish McColgan is one of the best distance runners in the world. The 32-year-old is a 3-time Olympian, a European and Commonwealth Games champion, and holds numerous British records. Last weekend, she added another record to that list, running the 10,000m in 30:00.86 as she prepares for her marathon debut in London next month. But despite her impressive athletic resume, Eilish frequently finds herself fending off social media trolls who are more focused on her appearance than her results. Coached by her mom, Olympic medalist Liz McColgan, Eilish knows the impact of strong female role models. In honour of International Women's Day, this week we chat about Eilish's phenomenal career, and how she's using it to create a better future for girls in sport.Learn more about Eilish McColgan's not-for-profit Giving Back to TrackLearn more about The Shakeout Podcast and Canadian Running Magazine on our website https://runningmagazine.ca/category/shakeout-podcast/Follow The Shakeout Podcast on Twitter https://twitter.com/ShakeoutPodcastInstagram https://www.instagram.com/shakeoutpodcast/ andFacebook https://www.facebook.com/theshakeoutpodcast/Subscribe to our weekly show on Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/ca/podcast/the-shakeout-podcast/id1224828899243

"Never forget where you started. Nobody is born running a mile. We all have to work for it. So never forget those first few steps. Keep up the faith. And then one day, you'll go out and you'll feel like you're flying." In her mid-thirties, Susie Chan was a cigarette-smoking single mom working as an exhibitions coordinator for art galleries and museums. The word "running" was definitely not a part of her vocabulary. But then, when her brother convinced her to run a half marathon with him, everything changed. Susie ran her first half marathon at 35, and she was hooked. Now, at 47, Susie is one of the best-known runners (and ultra runners!) in the UK. She has run some of the most grueling races in the world, including the 230K Jungle Ultra through the Amazon Rainforest, and the six-day Marathon Des Sables in the Sahara Desert. She's an Abbott World Marathon Majors six-star finisher, and in 2016, she broke the world record for most miles run on a treadmill in a 12-hour period (68.54 miles!). Today, Susie is most widely known for being a Peloton Tread instructor. In this conversation, we talk about all those highs — and the lows, including Susie's cancer diagnosis in 2017, and her ongoing experience with perimenopause. In Episode 3 we take a look back at the year of 2022. From Jake Wightman's incredible 1500m performance at the World Champs to Eilish McColgan's Commonwealth glory over the 1000m...
