Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah is the percussionist and vocalist behind African Head Charge, the experimental dub project he co-founded with legendary studio wizard Adrian Sherwood in the late 1970s. With dozens of albums to his credit, he's been established as an influential and singular performer with a sound all his own. Today I'm speaking with Bonjo about how he found his musical and spiritual calling in the Poco churches of Jamaica in his youth, how an encounter with Fela Kuti changed the course of his life, his collaborations with classic reggae and soul artists like Desmond Dekker, Prince Far I, Creation Rebel and the Foundations, how he turned an experimental studio project into a large live ensemble, and insights into African Head Charge's latest album, A Trip To Bolgatonga on Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound label. Today's guest just makes me smile. It's percussionist Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah from African Head Charge. He grew up in Jamaica and began playing drums in the Rasta camps and Poco churches. He was running away a lot and sleeping in graveyards. Music helped him get out of those bad situations. He really connected with it and started helping out bands as a young kid, even becoming an unofficial roadie. He got a gig with The Foundations of Build Me Up Buttercup fame. All of this helped him start African Head Charge. Bonjo tells me how the band started and what African Head Charge means. He also tells me who gave him the name Bonjo. The band began as a studio project but he was eventually asked to take the music on the road. Unfortunately, his drums were stolen and he couldn't. But that led to a great future relationship. It also led to him playing the main stage at Glastonbury. Bonjo's DIY approach and his hard work with African Head Charge unintentionally pissed people off. After years of hard work, Bonjo moved to Ghana and took some time off; twelve years to be precise. But now Bonjo is back with a new African Head Charge album, A Trip To Bolgatanga. It changes his sound slightly and focuses on African drumming from Ghana. He's got some special guests on it like King Ayisoba, Skip McDonald, and Doug Wimbish. Aflevering 147: Vincent Epskamp, zoon van Nico Epskamp. Toen de Prisonshow nog een pilot programma op Zaanradio was hebben we Nico Epskamp begin 2016 als gast gehad, telefonisch vanuit de gevangenis in de Verenigde Staten.  Nico en Frans kennen elkaar al heel lang. Ooit was Nico gedetineerd in Zuyderbos, later was hij directeur van Bonjo en hadden hij en Frans regelmatig overleg. Toen Nico vanuit Panama naar de VS werd overgebracht (ontvoerd door de DEA) en een uitspraak van 22 jaar gevangenisstraf kreeg is Frans bij hem op bezoek geweest in de federale gevangenis in New York.  In aflevering 142 hebben wij Sofie Bollen van Dutch&Detained te gast gehad en vandaag bespreken we wat de stand van zaken van Nico is, wat er met een Nederlander kan gebeuren als hij overgeleverd is aan het Amerikaanse Justitie-systeem en wat hij vanuit Nederland aan steun heeft ervaren. En natuurlijk wat deze situatie betekent voor Nico zijn familie in Nederland en het gezin van zijn zoon Vincent die docent is op een middelbare school en voorzitter van de medezeggenschapsraad. De “achterblijvers” zoals relaties van gedetineerde mensen ook wel genoemd worden. Aan tafel zitten Leonard Ornstein, Paul Jansen en Ageeth Ouwehand Het mediamoment van Jansen gaat over de Washington Post, en heeft te maken met Tucker Carlson, de politiek commentator bij de zender Fox News.  Hoe is er een verstrengeling van politiek en media? Ornsteins Mediamoment gaat over Bonjo, een blad door en voor gevangenen. Het krantje stopt want de financiering valt weg. Is dit een zegen of gaat er heel wat verloren? Wat was Bonjo precies? Jansen: "Het geld kan beter besteed worden dan een krantje voor boeven" De New York Times traceerde een van de gevangenen die de moordpartij in Boetsja overleefde door te doen of hij dood was en de krant identificeerde ook de slachtoffers. Is het goed dat een krant dit soort onderzoek doet? Is dit wel betrouwbaar? Hoe achterhaalden ze dit? Ornstein: "Hadden we dit soort bewijs maar van de WOII gehad" Rutte kiest de aanval als beste verdediging in het debat over het verwijderen van zijn sms'jes. We zagen een geprikkelde minister. Prisonshow aflevering 126: Marion van der Laar - Bonjo. In aflevering 9 van Prisonshow interviewden we Marion van der Laar, samen met twee andere medewerkers van Bonjo, kenniscentrum voor gedetineerden. Dat was in 2019 en sindsdien is er het nodige gebeurt. Zo maakte minister Dekker onlangs een nieuwe regeling voor vrijwilligersorganisaties bekend waardoor Bonjo haar financiering dreigt te verliezen. Een goede aanleiding om Marion aan de tand te voelen over het werk van Bonjo en wat wij gaan verliezen als Bonjo er niet meer zou zijn! "Ik moet er niet aan denken dan de achterblijvers en gedetineerden nergens meer terecht zouden kunnen."
