When I first developed an interest in rough-around-the-edges cumbia music, a friend (thanks Matt!) introduced me to the music of Dick El Demasiado, purveyor of “cumbias lunaticas.” Over the years I've managed to glean a bit more about him, then I recently saw a documentary about him called Dick Verdult: It Is True, But Not Here. I learned Dick El Demasiado the musician is a mere sliver of what Dick Verdult the artist has to offer. His culture-jamming tendencies are a reflection of his culturally scattered upbringing- born in the Netherlands, raised all over Europe and South America, and currently living in the Spanish town of Calanda. When Arrington de Dionyso and I spoke to him last November, he was at home in Spain. Dick discusses the music that spoke to him in his youth, moving 20 times in his first 20 years, writing ugly poetry, creating music alone vs with a group, having an audience in a notorious street gang, that signature skeleton costume, and his definition of cultural distortion. Gratitude to Jack Habegger for all the the portraits you've seen this season! Such strong work. Want to hear the show more often? Be a part of the movement! Whenever I have enough money to cover a full work day sourced from supporters like you [at Patreon.com/lowprofile ] I will work on a new episode. I'm the audio editor and there are over 30 hours of interviews currently available on the website. We're in the middle of recording new interviews, so expect another 10 or so interviews early this summer! Scherler Sundays is returning to downtown Olympia, WA every Sunday in July and August at 3pm. Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah is the percussionist and vocalist behind African Head Charge, the experimental dub project he co-founded with legendary studio wizard Adrian Sherwood in the late 1970s. With dozens of albums to his credit, he's been established as an influential and singular performer with a sound all his own. Today I'm speaking with Bonjo about how he found his musical and spiritual calling in the Poco churches of Jamaica in his youth, how an encounter with Fela Kuti changed the course of his life, his collaborations with classic reggae and soul artists like Desmond Dekker, Prince Far I, Creation Rebel and the Foundations, how he turned an experimental studio project into a large live ensemble, and insights into African Head Charge's latest album, A Trip To Bolgatonga on Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound label. Scherler Sundays is returning to downtown Olympia for summer 2024!! That means ten weeks in a row of free outdoor concerts and live interview tapings for future broadcast. Come see your next favorite artist and get to know them in one fell swoop, week after week! This year's lineup includes Little Wings, Mirah, Tender Forever, Lois, Damien Jurado, Michael Hurley, Chris Cohen, Oh Rose, Jonny Kosmo and more than 20 others, all curated and hosted by yours truly. It's happening every sunday at 3pm from July 21st through September 22nd. It would mean the world to me if I could set aside a proper work week at a living wage every month, and I believe with enough of the regular listeners chipping in 5 bucks, it could happen. So thanks a lot to those of you who have continued to support me on Patreon, and if you haven't yet, give it a try! It will be great for your karma, I bet! You can find links to more of their work on this episode's website at lowprofilepodcast.com, where you'll also find a treasure trove of oral history from exceptional musicians of all stripes. Do you get excited about on-the-job training? If so, you're not alone! Learning new things can help you revolutionize the way you work, improving your performance at your job and in life. So why do so many people feel that the training they receive is boring, ineffective, or unhelpful? To answer this question, we are joined by Mirah Young. Young learned first-hand that effective training makes or breaks the learning process. Listen in to discover how she recognizes a great training program when she sees it! Mirah's Background Graduated from Clark Atlanta University with a degree in Mass Media Communication During college, she was an apprentice in grant administration, and found joy in learning new things and helping others understand those things Why is Training So Important? Your employees are your best asset, and training shows them how invested their leadership is in them. Continuously supporting education and learning “keeps the knife sharp” and keeps you up to date with the constantly changing world. Even for team members who are familiar with their job, training can offer them new ways of doing things, which can lead to better efficiency and performance. Really great training can be invigorating and exciting for employees, as long as the training is highly engaging. What to Look For In a Training Program Know who the trainer is. Find out their qualifications, skills, and whether they gel with your company culture. Identify the key takeaways you want from the training and find out how the trainer approaches those topics. Look into the methods used in the training you're interested in to determine whether they're going to be immersive, engaging, and well thought out. “Innovation is, in a sense, transformation… Innovation is job enhancement in performance.” – Mirah Young Resources Mirah Young on LinkedIn Check out the Int-HER-rupt Website at www.intherrupt.com! There are some businesses and organizations that should not exist. And The Blue Ribbon Project is one of them. It's unfortunate that child abuse, in all forms, is a problem in our society, and the pathway through foster care is a difficult one. Here is where The Blue Ribbon Project comes into play. Taylor Pyles is the founder and a product of the foster care system in Maryland. He walked the walk, and now he's talking the talk. From Backpacks of Love which give children some basic possessions they need, to resources, to Mirah's Closet which allows foster children to "shop" for clothing, to outings and events. The Blue Ribbon Project wants to make a horrible situation as good as possible. It's a sobering conversation with some startling information and statistics. Like all non-profits, they can use help. Volunteer. Donate--cash or items to be placed in a backpack. Sponsor. Please do what you can. We owe it to these children! Learn more and visit their open house in Crownsville on April 15th! Have a listen! LINKS: The Blue Ribbon Project (Website) The Blue Ribbon Project (Facebook) The Blue Ribbon Project (YouTube) The Blue Ribbon Project (Twitter) The Blue Ribbon Project (Instagram)

In this episode of the Pawareness Podcast, we welcome Mirah Horowitz, the Founder and Executive Director of The Lucky Dog Animal Rescue. As a volunteer-run rescue based in Northern Virginia and the DC Metro Area, they rescue animals from high-kill shelters, especially those located in the rural south. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue started in 2009 after Mirah gathered like-minded volunteers from the community who are passionate about rescuing animals. Mirah recalls how government service has inspired her to lend a helping hand for helpless animals who deserve to have a second chance in life with a forever home and loving families. Despite its name, Lucky Dog Animal Rescue now offers an active program for cats in the community. Their mission is to connect potential adopters with animals who have been neglected, at risk of euthanasia, and in need of care and attention. Today, they also focus on addressing the prevalent issues concerning animals in their community. “Our real mission is to try to help shelters that have no other help.” - Mirah Horowitz Tune in to find out how you can start your own rescue and reach out to other shelters that need assistance in finding homes for animals! In our first episode, Mirah discussed the problems with adoption, in this episode she focuses on the solutions. As an advocate of family preservation not adoption separation, Mirah seeks an end to the falsification of vital records and believes that adoption as it is currently practiced needs to be replaced with guardian adoption after all attempts to provide resources for children to remain safely within their extended family have been exhausted. Such permanent legal guardianship would give all necessary rights to caretakers without falsifying the adopted person's original birth certificate.
Mirah Riben is the author of two internationally acclaimed books, Shedding Light on The Dark Side of Adoption and The Stork Market: Amercia's Multi-Billion Dollar Unregulated Adoption Industry. Mirah has published over 200 articles in the Huffington Post, USA Today and Crime Magazine to name a few. Her body of work spans four decades of researching and exposing the problems in the adoption industry, third party conception, anonymous contact conception and surrogacy, and the denial of adoptee rights to their authentic birth certificates. Mirah is a vocal advocate who is in favor of family preservation, in opposition of all profiteering in adoption and wants to end falsification of birth certificates and restore equal access for adoptees who have been issued fraudulent birth certificates. Risking imprisonment, Mirah has reunited hundreds of families separated by adoption and helped pregnant mothers prevent unnecessary loss by providing temporary shelter in her home. Mirah does not hold back in the two episodes we did together. She is not swayed by what people believe to be “extreme” views and “extreme” solutions. NO matter where your opinions land, these conversations will give you a lot to think about.

Songwriter Thao Nguyen performs with one of the best band names in the business: Thao And The Get Down Stay Down. Their 2013 album We The Common, marked a turning point both in Nguyen's musical career and in her life. During a hiatus from touring and recording with the band (Thao released a collaborative album with singer-songwriter Mirah in 2011), Nguyen spent time connecting with family and volunteering at a women's prison, where she met an inmate named Valerie Bolden. Bolden's story inspired the title track, one of three songs that Thao and her band played in-studio. (From the Archives, 2013.)

Stay tuned for insights into the incredible Olympia, WA music scene of the late '90s/early '00s; why Phil is recording as The Microphones again; and metaphorically — as well as literally — carrying your trash around with you. Episode #33: “Young people [are an] underserved population when it comes to the music industry.” That's the point our guest Andre Middleton drives home on this week's episode of The Future of What. In our discussion with Middleton (Friends of Noise, RACC) and Todd Fadel (The Meow Meow), we look at the logistics and pitfalls of starting and sustaining an all ages venue. Like many cities with rising rents and strict liquor laws, Portland has seen a slew of beloved all ages venues close in the last decade. Many people, young and old, still see the value in all ages venues. We talk with Claire Gunville (Semi Ok Collective) and Maya Stoner (Sabonis), both in their early twenties, about building an inclusive all ages community even without venues to turn to. The Vera Project in Seattle is often lauded for their all ages model, and their Talent Buyer Andrea Friedman gives us the low down on how they've survived for so long. GUESTS: Todd Fadel (Meow Meow) Andre Middleton (Friends of Noise, RACC) Andrea Friedman (The Vera Project) Claire Gunville (Semi OK Collective) Maya Stoner (Sabonis) MUSIC: Delta 5 "Mind Your Own Business" Elliott Smith "Rose Parade" Thao & Mirah "Sugar and Plastic" The Thermals "Canada"
Episode 78- Mirah (Zeitlyn). Before Mirah's show in Cincinnati, Yoni pulls her into his parked car for quick getting-to-know-you chat. They talk about Mirah's idea for a new band she wants to form, how she got started songwriting, Yoni's first experiences with Mirah's music, Mirah now vs. when she started, working with Phil Elverum, self-releasing her new album, and why her new album was hard to make.
On today's show, I talk to musician Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn. Originally from the outskirts of Philly, Mirah moved to Olympia, Washington to attend college, and while there, became part of the local music scene, where she worked with bands like The Microphones and Old Time Relijun. In the late 1990s, she started making music on her own, and her first album You Think It's Like This but Really It's Like This was released on K Records. Mirah's continued to work with them, and her latest album Changing Light was just released on Absolute Magnitude Records, an imprint of K, and it is spectacular!Check out the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, and follow me on Twitter!
This week's entry was inspired by a covers infused dinner Noise Pop is putting on with local SF supper club graffEats. The chef is going to prepare dishes that are covers of famous chef's dishes, with which Noise Pop will pair cover songs. So every song in this episode is a cover. Taking it a step further Dawson and the team explore the different ways a cover can be done. To gain some insight Jesse and Dawson speak with Josh Modell, A.V. Club's Editor-in-Chief, about his fantastic Undercover series. With some help from Josh, the gang focuses on the recent past and finds covers of artists all over the spectrum from Joanna Newsom to Kermit the Frog.
