Met de Europese samenwerking namen we afscheid van de geschiedenis. Oorlog was iets van anderen en bij anderen. Als Europeanen slaagden we er in conflicten op te knippen in technische compromissen en zo keer op keer te depolitiseren. Zelfs het gedurige geklaag over die technocratie, de slappe compromissen en 'te weinig democratie' hoorde bij de succesvolle lessen uit die historie. Maar de geschiedenis is terug, zij beukt onstuitbaar op onze deur. Caroline de Gruyter schreef er een boek over: Zondagskinderen. Zend ons een mailtje en wij zoeken contact. *** Het debat over de regeringsverklaring van Rob Jetten zal ongetwijfeld gaan over dilemma’s in de sociale zekerheid en met de begroting gaan, maar zijn kabinet kon weleens voor grotere geopolitieke uitdagingen en keuzes geplaatst worden dan geen eerdere ministersploeg sinds de val van de Muur. Jetten en zijn team zullen geen 'zondagskinderen’ meer zijn. De Franse denker Raymond Aron zei het al: "Connaître le passé est une manière de s'en liberer", noteert De Gruyter. Wie het verleden kent, kan zich ervan bevrijden. Want de oorlog in Oekraïne is veel meer dan die in Joegoslavië destijds 'onze oorlog'. Dat hier de rol van Rusland als koloniaal imperium een cruciaal verschil vormt, werd eigenlijk pas vier jaar geleden een nieuw besef. De gevolgen voor de Europese Unie zijn ingrijpend, maar zien we dat al scherp genoeg? Keer op keer zien we dat crises ertoe leiden dat de urgentie zo hoog wordt, dat alleen oplossingen op bovennationaal niveau een uitweg vormen. Jean Monnet had dat al door in 1951 bij de oprichting van de Europese Gemeenschap voor Kolen en Staal. Jacques Delors bij de val van de Muur met de Interne Markt. Angela Merkel bij de pandemie en de vluchtelingencrisis en nu staat de EU voor een vergelijkbare uitdaging omdat de Verenigde Staten noch Rusland een betrouwbare partner meer is. De veiligheidsgaranties die wij Oekraïne willen geven, geeft Kyiv de facto ook aan ons, zoals Volodymyr Zelensky fijntjes opmerkte tijdens de veiligheidsconferentie in München. Eigenlijk gaat alles zo op de schop. Ook de Frans-Duitse as. Ineens is niet Frankrijk de militaire, geopolitieke actor, maar treedt Friedrich Merz zo op. Ineens zou de radicaal-rechtse Jordan Bardella zich kunnen ontpoppen als een soort Giorgia Meloni in Parijs. Ineens worden nieuwe organisaties ingericht om de nieuwe uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden: een EU-Veiligheidsraad, een soort Europese Defensiegemeenschap - die in 1954 zo tragisch mislukte - en supranationale vormen van hightech militaire industrie. De Gruyter ziet één land dat hier allang de knop heeft omgezet. Eigenlijk kón Finland nooit anders, wilde het overleven. Of het nu hybride aanvallen, manipulaties via fake news of militaire en politieke intimidatie betreft, de Finnen waren er altijd tegen bewapend. Dat zij meteen de kans grepen toen ze EU-lid en recent ook NAVO-lid konden worden, is voor hen vanzelfsprekend. ‘Se-cu-ri-ty’ zoals een Fin het wat hem betreft allesoverheersende motief formuleerde. Dat juist nu president Alexander Stubb als een heldere, invloedrijke stem op het wereldtoneel klinkt kan dan ook niet verrassen. Hij kan als geen ander uiteenzetten hoezeer Europeanen anders moeten gaan denken over de nieuwe realiteit. Volgens De Gruyter laat de weerklank van Zelensky's moed en van Stubbs betoog zien dat veel Europese burgers al veel verder zijn dan vele nationale leiders durven denken. Dat de Litouwse oud-premier Andrius Kubilius net zo optreedt als Stubb kan evenmin verbazen. Zijn kleine Baltische land heeft nog erger geleden onder Russisch koloniaal imperialisme dan Finland. De Gruyter wijst op iemand die dit aspect al decennia geleden agendeerde: Otto von Habsburg. De kleinzoon van de laatste keizer in Wenen kende als geen ander de wortels van de machtspolitiek van de 18e en 19e eeuw en de rol van Rusland als koloniaal imperium. Kubilius probeert als Eurocommissaris voor defensiesamenwerking die lessen te vertalen naar het Europa van onze tijd. Een Europa dat mentaal en materieel nog maar net is wakker geschud. De Gruyter diepte dit uit met een van diens meest invloedrijke adviseurs achter de schermen, Klaus Welle, een Duitser die ook dicht bij Merz staat. Die wijst erop dat een aantal EU-lidstaten die met Duitsland altijd argwanend stonden tegenover gezamenlijke initiatieven zoals 'eurobonds' nu 180 graden gedraaid zijn. Van de lange tijd nogal eurosceptische Deense premier Mette Frederiksen tot de van nature conservatieve Bundesbank. Alleen het kabinet-Schoof wilde er officieel niets van weten. Ook hier een majeure uitdaging voor Jetten en zijn ploeg. Dilan Yesilgöz (Defensie) en Tom Berendsen (Buitenlandse Zaken) zullen in Europa, in de NAVO en breder geopolitiek minstens zo offensief en doelgericht moeten gaan werken als Jetten en Eelco Heinen (Financiën). De Europese Veiligheidsraad in opbouw, de 'E6' van de grote economieën in Europa en de bouw van een eigen Europese pijler binnen de NAVO zullen veel van hen vergen. Onberekenbare onrust rond de Caraïben in ons koninkrijk niet minder, wellicht. Want pogingen vanuit de MAGA-hoek om de EU te splijten en te vervangen door een losse federatie van Orbánachtige patriottische staten laten één ding zien. Net als het Kremlin is Donald Trumps Amerika bang voor een EU als succesverhaal; als model van effectieve samenwerking. Een netwerk van overheden, lobbyclubs en groene organisaties heeft helemaal geen belang bij het oplossen van de Nederlandse stikstofcrisis. Het zogeheten ‘stikstofslot' fungeert namelijk als hefboom voor de greep op het Nederlandse grondgebruik en de toegang tot miljarden aan subsidies. Dat zegt onderzoeksjournalist GEESJE ROTGERS in gesprek met SYP WYNIA in deze aflevering van WWTV. Rotgers constateert dat het invloedrijke netwerk van overheden en lobby's er op uit is om een groot deel van het dichtbevolkte Nederland, wellicht 40 procent van de grond, vrij te maken voor natuur- of natuurgerelateerde bestemmingen. Dat is nog meer dan de 30 procent waarvan elders in de Europese Unie sprake is. Vrijgekomen hectares komen vervolgens in handen van grote ‘terreinbeheerders' als Staatsbosbeheer, Natuurmonumenten en de provinciale landschappen, die nu samen al ruim 500.000 hectare van Nederland in handen hebben. Het is dus ook eigenbelang dat hen drijft. Geesje Rotgers constateert dat het kabinet-Jetten het miljarden kostende beleid van de kabinetten-Rutte (en met name van VVD-stikstofminister Christianne van der Wal) gaat hervatten. Vijf jaar nadat het kabinet Rutte viel over het toeslagenschandaal, worstelen ouders en hun kinderen nog steeds met de gevolgen. In 'Niet Mijn Schuld - Kinderen van de Toeslagenaffaire' ontdekt Sander 't Sas (maker van de bekroonde podcast De Taxioorlog) in een journalistieke zoektocht dat veruit de meeste kinderen die ten onrechte uit huis zijn geplaatst, nog steeds niet terug zijn. Kinderen worden bovendien door de overheid niet erkend als volwaardig gedupeerden en hebben hierdoor ook geen toegang tot de schaderegeling. Ondanks dat zij - net als hun ouders - torenhoge schulden hebben omdat zij het hoofd boven water moesten zien te houden.

Met het nieuwe minderheidskabinet moet Den Haag zich opmaken voor een periode van werken aan wisselende meerderheden; ‘een eindeloze formatie’, noemt Coen van de Ven het in zijn stuk in De Groene Amsterdammer deze week. De vraag is welke visie de hoofdrolspelers voor ogen hebben. Waar Lubach spreekt van Yeşilgöz I, heeft Van de Ven het over Rutte IV. Wordt het lang leve het bedrijfsleven, of keert er toch iets van gemeenschapsgevoel terug? Na een bewogen Kamerdebat gaan Coen van de Ven en Kees van den Bosch in gesprek over de huidige stand van zaken van deze onwennige coalitie. Americký prezident Donald Trump to řekl po jednání s generálním tajemníkem Aliance Markem Ruttem. „NATO zjevně nabídlo nějakou formu dohody o budoucím uspořádání a vojenské přítomnosti. Rutte má ve vztahu k Trumpovi velmi dobré vyjednávací schopnosti a nabídl dostatečné ústupky, aby odvolal hrozby cel,“ soudí v Interview Plus amerikanista Jakub Dopieralla.

Amerikaanse en Europese bronnen bevestigen dat de soevereiniteit van Denemarken en Groenland gewaarborgd blijft, maar benadrukken dat de crisis niet is opgelost en de spanningen blijven bestaan. Tijdens de EU-top in Brussel spreken Europese leiders vandaag over de relatie met de Verenigde Staten en mogelijke tegenmaatregelen. Ondanks het intrekken van de heffingen is de trans-Atlantische samenwerking allesbehalve hersteld en blijft de onvoorspelbaarheid van de Amerikaanse koers een centraal punt van zorg. De oorlog in Oekraïne duurt nu even lang als de oorlog die in juni 1941 begon met operatie-Barbarossa. Toen had Stalin na vier jaar de Wehrmacht verslagen en zelfs Berlijn veroverd. Daarentegen is Vladimir Poetins Blitzkrieg mislukt en uitgelopen op een loopgravenoorlog als in de Eerste Wereldoorlog bij Verdun en de IJzer. 2025 was rampzalig voor het Kremlin. Geen enkel offensief slaagde, ook met Donald Trump nu als halve bondgenoot erbij werd Kyiv niet op de knieën gedwongen. Economisch staart Rusland in een afgrond en een reeks essentiële bondgenoten en vazalstaten ging ten onder. De gevolgen voor Europa - en dus voor Nederland - zijn groot. Dat angstvisioen beheerst nu zelfs AleksandrLoekasjenko in Belarus. Zelfs hij probeert ineens weer aan te pappen met zijn EU-buren en Amerika en laat vele politieke gevangenen vrij. Partner Xi Jinping komt het Kremlin niet te hulp. Integendeel. Een langjarige overeenkomst om Russische elektriciteit af te tappen is zonder pardon opgezegd. China kan zelf – en duurzaam – veel minder kostbaar stroom produceren. Het verdienmodel van Rusland is daarmee hopeloos verouderd. De oude droom van Stalin en zijn opvolgers vervliegt. Het Kremlin kan zich niet als gelijkwaardige wereldmacht profileren naast Amerika. Barack Obama’s cynische conclusie is bewaarheid: Rusland is ‘een regionale macht die in Oekraïne zwakheid toont in plaats van kracht’. Dat wordt bevestigd door een serie opvallende signalen. Het Russische leger meldt aan het Kremlin en de bevolking allerlei militaire triomfen die vervolgens niet blijken te kloppen. Ook beweringen over technologische hoogstandjes van de militaire industrie blijken fata morgana's. De westerse sancties leiden ertoe dat allerlei geavanceerde middelen en apparatuur niet meer gerepareerd kan worden. Civiel vliegverkeer en spoorwegen staan op instorten. Europa doet intussen nadrukkelijke pogingen haar positie in komende onderhandelingen te optimaliseren, om zo Kyiv bij te staan. Niet alleen zou één onderhandelaar namens alle partners worden aangewezen - de Finse president Alexander Stubb - ook wordt EU-lidmaatschap voor Oekraïne - als 'veiligheidsgarantie' - in hoog tempo concreet voorbereid. In 2027 zouden liefst vier nieuwe lidstaten kunnen toetreden, uiteraard met maatwerk-afspraken voor de verdere uitwerking. Dit zijn Montenegro, IJsland, Moldavië en Oekraïne. Vooral dit laatste land zou een majeure uitbreiding betekenen en dat op zo'n korte termijn. Voor het komende kabinet onder leiding van Rob Jetten betekent dit dat het lijkt op Lubbers III. Dit trad aan terwijl de Berlijnse Muur viel en moest onmiddellijk rekening houden met revolutionaire omwentelingen bij de oosterburen en daarmee in heel Europa en in de NAVO. Al bij de regeringsverklaring zal Jetten klare wijn moeten schenken en de toekomst van Europa, de nieuwe militaire en geopolitieke uitdagingen en een actieve rol voor Nederland hoogste prioriteit geven. Van triomfen tot fiasco's, van internationale crises tot lef in campagnes en debatten. Zijn pragmatisme, lenigheid en 'Wille zur Macht' kun je maar beter niet onderschatten. Jettens grootste pluspunt bij zijn start is zijn directe voorganger Dick Schoof. In elk opzicht is hij de contrastfiguur tegenover deze ijdele en onhandige ambtenaar op jaren. Al delen ze wel de hardloophobby. Hij is bovendien ook een jeugdig contrast ten opzichte van zijn voorganger als D66-aanvoerder, Sigrid Kaag. Dit zal hem in Europa en de NAVO direct goed van pas komen. Zeker als Bontenbal en Klaver zo verstandig zijn hem in hun Europese families van EVP en S&D een goede, gedegen entree te gunnen. Zulk krediet helpt bij wederzijds vertrouwen. Grote uitdaging zal zijn hoe het hem lukt zijn partij de rol van leidende club in coalitie en Kamer te laten pakken. D66 begon immers als anti-partij tegen het establishment en de polder en verkeerde regelmatig in politieke doodsnood. Jetten zal hier allereerst zelf zijn partij op sleeptouw moeten nemen, geholpen door een krachtige partijvoorzitter en een 'chief whip'. Rolmodellen uit de D66-historie heeft Jetten voor zijn nieuwe functie niet. Voor de cruciale kenmerken van een succesvol premierschap en leiderschap kan hij van voorgangers uit alle politieke tradities veel leren. Soms onverwachte lessen. Verrassen bij je start kan hij afkijken van de liberaal Johan Rudolf Thorbecke en de christendemocraat Ruud Lubbers. Ver vooruit durven kijken kan hij leren van socialist Willem Drees en partijloze premier Pieter Cort van der Linden. Bij Dries van Agt, Balkenende en Rutte kan hij opdoen hoe essentieel het is dat hij snel een maatje vindt op het hoogste niveau in Europa. Wie zal zijn 'Mutti' worden (Angela Merkel voor Rutte)? De extraverte 'Sarko' (Nicolas Sarkozy voor Balkenende)? Of zijn 'Macher’ in de strijd zoals Helmut Schmidt voor Van Agt? Crisisbestendigheid hoeft Jetten niet te leren. Als jong minister werd hij meteen in het diepe gegooid door Poetins oorlog en de gevolgen daarvan voor energie, economie en welvaart. Joop den Uyl, Van Agt en Rutte kan hij als voorbeelden nemen op dat terrein. Zij moesten een oliecrisis, terreuraanslagen en een pandemie het hoofdbieden. Cruciaal is dat burgers in een nieuwe premier merken dat hij geen diva is. Ingetogenheid, toewijding en werklust worden gewaardeerd. Piet de Jong, Lubbers en Drees zijn hier exemplarisch. De eenvoudige humor van De Jong zou voor Jetten een prachtige kers op de taart zijn. Blijf als premier maar liever weg bij klatergoud en 'talkshows'. Vermijd de gêne van 'Ome Joop' in de André van Duin Show of Rutte in VI. Belangrijk zijn de lessen van voorgangers voor twee essentiële relaties. Ten eerste die met het Koningshuis. Drees en Den Uyl laten zien hoe wezenlijk het is respectvol en loyaal te zijn, maar altijd alert dat hún problemen of uitglijers niet de jouwe worden. Lubbers en Balkenende moesten meemaken dat je hier al snel ook zelf in perikelen terecht kunt komen. En op dankbaarheid hoeft een premier nooit te rekenen. De tweede essentiële relatie is die met jezelf. Een premier kan ongemerkt vereenzamen. Thorbecke en Lubbers zijn daar aangrijpende voorbeelden van. Ook voor Jetten zal in dat opzicht de vraag zijn: wie is mijn Jan de Koning? En: verken ik tijdig mijn opvolging? Rutte en Den Uyl zijn daarbij waarschuwingen uit eerdere periodes. Welke risico's zal premier Jetten onder ogen moeten zien? Allereerst die van elke minderheidsconstructie. De maakt immers gedogers oppermachtig. Jetten gaat nu doen wat Pieter Omtzigt wilde. Beseft hij dit? Realiseert hij zich dat Jesse Klaver en Joost Eerdmans - als ze zich goede machiavellisten tonen - elkaar het balletje zullen toespelen om de premier maximaal te laten zweten? In de nieuwe coalitie is één partij Jettens grootste onzekerheidsfactor. Het CDA. De kleinste partij in het verbond staat tegenover een dominant liberaal blok. Bontenbal ziet zichzelf als een winnaar. Die winst zal hij willen verzilveren, ten koste dus van de paars-seculiere ideologie waarin VVD en D66 al eerder hebben samengewerkt. Het CDA kon daarom zich weleens profileren als nadrukkelijk sociale factor tegenover de liberalen en als rem bij al te gretige hervormingen in de medisch-ethische sfeer. Freshly laid-off people filed these applications for unemployment insurance at state unemployment agencies, which then reported them to the US Department of Labor by the weekly deadline, which then combined the data and published it today. In a longer timespan going back to the 1970s, initial claims are very low, despite the growth of nonfarm payrolls over the decades. They were lower only during the tight labor market of 2018 and 2019 and during the labor shortages coming out of the pandemic. Layoffs show no signs of a weakening labor market. If the labor market is weakening, it's on the job-creation side of the equation. So layoffs are low, but once laid off, it takes people longer to find a job as companies have slowed their hiring, but even that has improved since the summer. For each count of wire fraud, Dickerson faces up to 20 years in federal prison, and a fine of up to $250,000. For each count of money laundering, Dickerson faces up to ten years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the amount of the criminally derived property involved in the transaction,” the DOJ said. According to the charging documents, Dickerson, through BLMOKC, raised more than $5.6 million, but rather than using the money to bail out George Floyd rioters, she used millions to fund her lavish lifestyle. Federal prosecutors said Dickerson funneled over $3.5 million to her personal accounts and spent it on vacations, six properties in Oklahoma City, retail shopping, and food.
