"Er is een grote kans dat je dood gaat of gewond raakt en de kans is groot dat als je gewond raakt, dat je zal lijden in de modder en daar sterft." Met die woorden richtte oud-premier en huidig NAVO-baas Mark Rutte zich tot jonge Russen. Dat deed hij bij een persconferentie in Kyiv. Volgens Rutte lijdt Rusland grote verliezen in Oekraïne en vallen er zo'n duizend Russische doden per dag. Schrijver en columnist Roos Schlikker vindt het goed dat NOS-verslaggever Kysia Hekster in het 20:00 uur journaal een aantal keer benadrukte dat zij zulke informatie niet zelf kan controleren. "Die cijfers zijn voor een normaal mens ook niet te bevatten", zegt politiek commentator Kees Boonman. Boonman vond de oproep van Rutte en vooral zijn taalgebruik wel "erg om te horen." Wat de commentator betreft gaat het om zulke middeleeuwse taal. "Maar Rutte gaat niet zomaar iets roepen." Schlikker vond het zeker ook stevig taalgebruik. "Hier is goed over nagedacht, is retoriek." Het kabinet van Rob Jetten is minder populair dan het kabinet Schoof rond dezelfde tijd. Dat klinkt als een groot probleem, maar wie verder terugkijkt ziet dat ook de kabinetten Rutte drie maanden na aantreden impopulair waren. Politiek duider Peter Kee en oud D66-spindoctor Roy Kramer gingen erover in gesprek in De Rode Draad. 

Die Außenminister der Nato-Staaten demonstrieren Einigkeit. Sowohl Nato-Generalsekretär Rutte als auch US-Außenminister Rubio betonen, dass die USA und ihre europäischen Verbündeten weiter eng zusammenarbeiten wollten. Vor allem der Truppen-Abzug der USA aus Europa hatte zuletzt zu Spannungen geführt. Außerdem zeigt sich die US-Regierung enttäuscht darüber, dass sie von Nato-Verbündeten im Iran-Krieg kaum Unterstützung erfährt. Einig sind sich dagegen alle Nato-Partner schon jetzt, dass die Europäer mehr Verantwortung im Verteidigungsbündnis übernehmen müssen. Het kabinet-Jetten gaat opmerkelijk lichtzinnig om met de toestand waarin het land en het kabinet verkeren. Daarover gaat het in dit videogesprek van PIM VAN GALEN met SYP WYNIA. Jetten zelf is veel in het buitenland en trok nog een hele week uit voor een bezoek aan de Nederlandse Antillen, waar zijn staatssecretaris Eric van der Burg (VVD, Koninkrijkszaken) nog maar net vertrokken was. En dat terwijl het kabinet geen meerderheid heeft in de Tweede Kamer en al helemaal niet in de Eerste Kamer en al evenmin in het land. Burgers willen een inperking van de instroom van asielzoekers, maar krijgen kritiek als ze tegen de aanhoudende instroom en de Spreidingswet protesteren. De vakbonden staan op het punt om landelijke stakingen tegen bezuinigingen op de uitkeringen voor werknemers te beginnen. En de boeren zullen weer uitrijden als duidelijk wordt dat het D66-stikstofbeleid wordt voortgezet. Een hete zomer dreigt, ook al omdat de spanningen binnen de coalitie en het kabinet onoplosbaar lijken. FNV-vakbondsleider Hans Spekman (GroenLinks/PvdA) heeft een een-tweetje met Jesse Klaver (fractieleider GroenLinks/PvdA) tegen de bezuinigingen op uitkeringen voor werkloosheid en arbeidsongeschiktheid die het kabinet nodig heeft om de verhoging van de Navo-uitgaven te kunnen betalen. Het kabinet gaat met Spekman praten, ook om zo een meerderheid in de Kamer te kunnen krijgen. Dat kan alleen door grote concessies te doen aan links. Accepteert de VVD dat? Maar de coalitie van D66, VVD en CDA doet niets om steun te vergaren, heeft zich niets aangetrokken van de laatste verkiezingsuitslagen en gaat gewoon door met het beleid van de kabinetten-Rutte, zoals het peperdure en niet te verantwoorden klimaat- en stikstofbeleid. Het verzet tegen het asielbeleid wordt dankbaar geframed als opgejut door extreemrechts, terwijl Nederland al decennia minder immigratie en meer integratie wil, terwijl Den Haag al tien jaar niets heeft gedaan om de asieltoestroom te verminderen. Hij is weg uit het Torentje. Maar Mark Rutte is nooit echt vertrokken. Vanuit Brussel en de NAVO zou hij nog altijd invloed uitoefenen op de VVD en kabinet-Jetten.In deze aflevering bespreken Maarten van Rossem en Tom Jessen de onthullingen uit De negen levens van Dilan Yesilgöz van journalist Alies Pegtel . De eerste twee maanden van het nieuwe kabinet lieten meteen zien onder welke druk het minderheidskabinet van Rob Jetten moet presteren. Ze werden direct in een wereldwijde crisis gestort, met dramatische gevolgen voor de energiezekerheid, grondstofketens, economische perspectieven en geopolitieke dreigingen. Stevige parlementaire meerderheden zijn niet in zicht en de polder is balsturig. Toch heeft het kabinet op vier grote thema's panache getoond. Soms zonder dat de buitenwacht daar erg in had, noteren Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger. Jetten gunde de VVD na tal van vergeefse pogingen – ook al onder Rutte - om dit nu echt te regelen af te ronden. Bart van den Brink, de CDA-vicepremier, bleek bereid de wetgeving van VVD'er David van Weel - die hier PVV'er Marjolein Fabers werk voortzette - in de Senaat te verdedigen en zo af te ronden. Maar de Senaat is na ‘Schoof’ een mijnenveld. De grootste partij bij de Eerste-Kamerverkiezingen van 2023, de BBB, is daar in splinters uiteen gevallen, zoals ook PVV en BBB 'aan de overzijde'. De labiliteit werd nog verhevigd doordat Geert Wilders bijna te laat ontdekte dat succes voor Van den Brink juist voor zijn PVV funest zou zijn. Diens opdracht was duidelijk: de linkerzijde niet frustreren, de rechterzijde vastpinnen op hun eigen 'strengste beleid ooit' en voor SGP en CDA humane uitvoering daarvan garanderen. Lukte hem dat, dan zou de PVV zijn aanpak moeten omarmen en vastzitten aan met hem solidair meewerken aan het aanstaande EU-migratiepact. Prompt dwong Wilders zijn senatoren tot allerlei pirouettes om te voorkomen dat zij de wetgeving van hun 'kanjer' Faber nog zouden moeten steunen. Deze absurde situatie werd nog potsierlijker door manoeuvres bij D66. Premier Jetten had misschien toch wat Lubberiaans 'even meedenken' in eigen kring moeten toepassen. Anders dan het beeld na afloop kwam Bart van den Brink toch met winst uit de strijd. Hij kan in hoog tempo nu effectieve, uitvoerbare en humane wetgeving voorleggen en beide Kamers uitdagen nu wél hun werk te doen. In zijn eigen partij, het CDA, zal hij wel even moeten uitleggen dat dit resultaat geen reden tot ‘teleurstelling over weinig steun voor kabinet’ is (het commentaar van CDA-leider Henri Bontenbal), maar juist kans biedt zich te profileren als gedegen partij. Zeker ten opzichte van VVD en PVV die keer op keer niet leverden bij 'asiel'. Het kabinet kan intussen profiteren van grote doorbraken tijdens de Eurotop op Cyprus. Bij de Straat van Hormuz, de steun aan Oekraïne, energienoodbeleid en de praktische uitwerking van de rapporten Draghi en Letta zit Nederland daadwerkelijk aan tafel – het staat niet meer op het menu. Het nationale energiepakket van het kabinet bleek zó doelgericht te zijn ingevuld, dat ook gepatenteerde klagers over Haags beleid opvallend stil waren. Zelfs de boeren en de vissers! Ook bij de Voorjaarsnota kon de coalitie een reeks stappen zetten met wisselende Kamermeerderheden. Daarmee lijkt naar Prinsjesdag het pad geëffend. De onzekerheden zijn nog groot, ook geopolitiek gezien, en VVD-minister Eelco Heinen heeft er een handje van problemen door te schuiven - hij lijkt meer op de voormalige Griekse minister Yanis Varoufakis dan op een strakke Onno Ruding (CDA, kabinetten-Lubbers I en II) of Jeroen Dijsselbloem (PvdA, Rutte II). Drie mistbanken hangen nog voor de kust bij Scheveningen. Het noodzakelijke sociaal akkoord van kabinet en polder vertoont weinig dynamiek. De druk neemt toe nu blijkt dat het kabinet-Schoof in de WIA nog veel meer gaten en problemen achterliet. Enkele signalen gaf Jetten wel al af, zoals bij verzachting bij ingrepen in de bijstand. In het CDA klinken niettemin zorgen over het al te liberale karakter en de toonzetting daarbij van de coalitie. De uitgestoken hand valt minder op dan de permanente campagnestand van de VVD en onwennigheid bij D66 in haar rol als leidende coalitiepartij. Mistig is ook de grote aangekondigde hervorming in de zorg van VVD-minister Sophie Hermans en CDA-minister Mirjam Sterk. Het beteugelen van de kosten is geen rocket science - de Duitse coalitie van CDU/CSU en SPD is met precies hetzelfde bezig. Gek genoeg dreigen hier vooral in de VVD problemen. Eigen bijdragen voor meer gefortuneerde ouderen is in die partij sinds Rutte II een doembeeld. De strijd kon hier weleens vooral door VVD’ers onderling gevoerd gaan worden. Waar de mist nu zou kunnen optrekken, is bij de 'taskforce toekomstige welvaart en vestigingsklimaat'. Op Cyprus is met het stevige EU-pakket 'One Europe, One Market' een doorbraak mogelijk met de concrete aanpak van de rapporten Draghi, Letta, Wennink en de door Heinen zo bepleite 'Kapitaalmarktunie'. Nederland kan als lid van de E6-kopgroep van grote economieën van de EU voortrekker zijn. Hier moet vóór de Franse presidentsverkiezingen concreet 'geleverd' worden, beseffen alle betrokkenen. Europe is turning to Turkey to fill the security vacuum left by an increasingly unreliable United States. But as Nato's secretary-general was praising Ankara's growing military role this week, the European Commission president was placing Turkey in the same bracket as China and Russia. The contradiction points to a dilemma that is only going to deepen. Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte visited Aselsan, one of Turkey's fast-expanding defence companies and a growing arms supplier to Europe, during a trip to Ankara on Tuesday and Wednesday, using the occasion to underline the scale of threats facing the alliance.  NATO's southern anchor "Russia's war against Ukraine rages on, China's military modernisation and nuclear expansion continue, and Iran spreads terror and chaos, and you feel this here in Turkey," he said. The visit came days after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a different message, placing Turkey alongside China and Russia as a competitor rather than an ally or membership applicant. It was a rare public signal of how deep European reservations about Ankara run, even as reliance on Turkish military capacity grows. Europe's uneasy dependency Huseyin Bagci, professor of international relations at Ankara's Middle East Technical University, says the contrast between Rutte and von der Leyen exposes a fundamental contradiction at the heart of Europe's relationship with Ankara. "What Rutte said and what von der Leyen said are two contradictory statements," he said. "Turkey is becoming less democratic. But the more America separates itself from European security, the more important Turkey will become." That dynamic is already reshaping Nato's architecture. Adana is set to host a new corps headquarters, designated MNC-TUR, under Turkish command, while Istanbul is to become the base of a new maritime command, focused on Black Sea security as part of post-war planning for Ukraine. Serhat Guvenc, a military expert at Istanbul's Kadir Has University, says Turkey's expanding capabilities and operational record make the enlarged role a natural fit. Will Turkey ditch Russian missiles for US military jets? *"Turkey's future contribution may take shape around these existing initiatives," he said, pointing to the wartime grain corridor and the Black Sea Mine Countermeasures task group as foundations to build on. Turkey has also launched an ambitious naval building programme, with modern submarines well suited to Black Sea operations. Yet the question of how far Europe can trust Ankara remains unresolved. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has maintained close ties with Vladimir Putin throughout the Ukraine war. Federico Donelli, a political scientist at the University of Trieste, says the EU is still searching for clarity on where Turkey actually stands. "Turkey has on many occasions adopted a more ambiguous stance, even in relation to the war in Ukraine," he said. "The EU would like to know whether Turkey could be a reliable partner." If Putin wins Ankara argues that its relationship with Moscow is a diplomatic asset, allowing it to serve as a potential mediator between Russia and Ukraine. Turkey has hosted peace talks between the two sides on several occasions. But Guvenc warns that calculus could shift sharply if Russia emerges victorious. "If peace comes on Putin's terms, the potential Russian threat to Turkey's interests will increase several-fold," he said. "Russia emerging from the conflict with substantial gains will be a very different story." Erdogan weighs benefits of friendlier ties with Turkey's Western allies The tension between Turkey's military indispensability and its political unpredictability is set to take centre stage at the Nato summit on 7-8 July in Ankara. With Washington's commitment to European defence still in question, European leaders may find themselves with little choice but to deepen ties with a partner many of them do not fully trust.

If Biden's administration (and those that preceded it) treated Ukraine as a second-tier ally and Russia as a peer adversary, then Trump's administration has flipped the script. In their perception, Ukraine is a third or forth tier country, and barely a partner at all, whereas Russia has become a prospective ally, trading partner and a power whose vision of the world is in alignment with that of the U.S. The cover story is a that Russia shares common, conservative and traditional values, but the subtext is that Russia aspires to imperial regional hegemony, with an informal view of power relations built on transaction, coercion and the idea that might makes right. This is a world that Trump empathises with, and in which he aspires to become a player in.But as ever, he has backed a loser and invested his political capital in a losing idea. Trump and Co. constantly overestimate Russia's strength and fail to see how brittle and weak it has become. President Donald Trump is considering moving U.S. troops from North Atlantic Treaty Organization members that have not backed the war against Iran and moving them to more supportive countries, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, while he also mulls trying to withdraw the U.S. from NATO altogether. KEY FACTS The proposal would involve removing American troops stationed in countries Trump believes were not supportive of the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran and moving them to countries deemed helpful amid the conflict, the Journal reported. The potential punishment against some NATO members is one of several being circulated in the White House, according to the Journal. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who met with Trump in a closed-door meeting Wednesday, did not speak to the validity of the Journal's report in an interview with CNN, remaining tight-lipped and saying he had a very “frank” and “open discussion” with Trump. Trump and Rutte's meeting came after Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump has considered withdrawing from NATO, the 32-member alliance that acts as a collective military defense for the countries under its banner. But Trump cannot unilaterally withdraw the U.S. from NATO under a 2023 law that says withdrawal requires a two-thirds Senate approval (right now, including at least 14 Democrats supporting it) or a formal act of Congress. That law was co-sponsored by then Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., Trump's secretary of state, who recently told Fox News that after the war with Iran, “we are going to have to reexamine” the U.S. relationship with NATO. TANGENT The U.S. and Iran reached a ceasefire agreement Tuesday night, with Trump saying the two countries would “work closely” to establish a regime change and remove nuclear materials. The agreement was reached after Trump threatened strikes on civilian infrastructure alongside a statement in which he said “a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again.” Iran accused the U.S. of breaking the ceasefire after Israel conducted bombings in Lebanon. Today's Headlines: Less than 24 hours after Trump declared the Iran ceasefire "a huge day for world peace," Iran accused the U.S. of violating three of the ten agreed points, only four ships passed through the Strait versus the pre-war average of 100 a day, and Iran is charging $2 million per ship in tolls payable in crypto or Chinese yuan. Meanwhile, at least 50 brand new Polymarket accounts — created Tuesday morning — placed extremely well-timed bets before Trump posted the ceasefire announcement, with one bet placed 12 minutes before the post. Those accounts made between tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars. Peace talks are still scheduled for Pakistan on Saturday with JD Vance leading, assuming Israel doesn't blow it up first — literally. Iran's foreign minister warned talks could be cancelled if Israeli strikes in Lebanon continue. Trump met with NATO chief Mark Rutte and continued bashing the alliance, while the Wall Street Journal reported the new U.S. strategy is to punish NATO countries deemed unhelpful during the Iran war by moving troops out of their bases — the same bases that deter Russian aggression across Europe. In other news, Democrats swept two special elections Tuesday: liberals won Wisconsin's Supreme Court race by 20 points — a 21-point swing from 2024 — giving them a 5-2 majority through at least 2030. President Donald Trump is considering moving U.S. troops from North Atlantic Treaty Organization members that have not backed the war against Iran and moving them to more supportive countries, The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday, while he also mulls trying to withdraw the U.S. from NATO altogether. KEY FACTS The proposal would involve removing American troops stationed in countries Trump believes were not supportive of the U.S. and Israel's war with Iran and moving them to countries deemed helpful amid the conflict, the Journal reported. The potential punishment against some NATO members is one of several being circulated in the White House, according to the Journal. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who met with Trump in a closed-door meeting Wednesday, did not speak to the validity of the Journal's report in an interview with CNN, remaining tight-lipped and saying he had a very “frank” and “open discussion” with Trump. Trump and Rutte's meeting came after Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump has considered withdrawing from NATO, the 32-member alliance that acts as a collective military defense for the countries under its banner. But Trump cannot unilaterally withdraw the U.S. from NATO under a 2023 law that says withdrawal requires a two-thirds Senate approval (right now, including at least 14 Democrats supporting it) or a formal act of Congress. That law was co-sponsored by then Sen.
