When I first developed an interest in rough-around-the-edges cumbia music, a friend (thanks Matt!) introduced me to the music of Dick El Demasiado, purveyor of “cumbias lunaticas.” Over the years I've managed to glean a bit more about him, then I recently saw a documentary about him called Dick Verdult: It Is True, But Not Here. I learned Dick El Demasiado the musician is a mere sliver of what Dick Verdult the artist has to offer. His culture-jamming tendencies are a reflection of his culturally scattered upbringing- born in the Netherlands, raised all over Europe and South America, and currently living in the Spanish town of Calanda. When Arrington de Dionyso and I spoke to him last November, he was at home in Spain. Dick discusses the music that spoke to him in his youth, moving 20 times in his first 20 years, writing ugly poetry, creating music alone vs with a group, having an audience in a notorious street gang, that signature skeleton costume, and his definition of cultural distortion. Gratitude to Jack Habegger for all the the portraits you've seen this season! Such strong work. Want to hear the show more often? Be a part of the movement! Whenever I have enough money to cover a full work day sourced from supporters like you [at Patreon.com/lowprofile ] I will work on a new episode. I am currently taping season 10 for release in 2025, but in the meantime I have some fun stuff on the table- unpublished interviews with Gastr Del Sol, Elf Power, Dollar Country host Franklin Fantini and DJ Screw biographer Lance Scott Walker, plus live episodes from Scherler Sundays 2024 with interviews and performances from Chris Cohen, Mirah, Michael Hurley, Danbert Nobacon of Chumbawamba, Little Wings, Jonny Kosmo, Lori Goldston and Oh, Rose. If your want to listen to more oral history from some pretty radical musicians, scope olympiamusichistory.org and dig around. I'm the audio editor and there are over 30 hours of interviews currently available on the website. We're in the middle of recording new interviews, so expect another 10 or so interviews early this summer! Scherler Sundays is returning to downtown Olympia, WA every Sunday in July and August at 3pm. See a curated afternoon of bands and solo artists, plus live interview tapings for Low Profile. First in Deerhoof and then on his own over four consistently brilliant solo LPs (including the brand-new Hardly Art release Paint A Room), Chris Cohen's been gifting us with projects over the last 25 years that've run the gamut stylistically. Massive success inevitably beckons, and that's the objective truth. Here's just a few of the things Chris and I discuss in this podcast: How his creative process fundamentally shifted for the construction of his brilliant new LP, Paint A Room; A shockingly bare and extremely in-depth discussion of his father's addictions and indiscretions, not to mention the trauma that created for Chris (which was then funneled into the autobiographical bravery of his third album); And a song-by-song analysis of both Paint A Room and 2019's self-titled LP! Artem Fishman is Dow Jones's CTO. He leads more than 2,000 people who work on products across the company's portfolio, including The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and MarketWatch. If you're engaging with news, he's influenced its delivery to your mobile device. Becoming the CTO of Dow Jones is not a feat achieved overnight. Fishman is a technologist known for setting up technical teams to deliver results swiftly in financially prudent environments. His career, which has seen him in global leadership roles at SoundCloud, Yahoo, Huge, and Thomson Reuters, is a testament to his ability to deliver results. Like many engineers, he began his journey to success more humbly. He developed his calling for engineering at a very young age in his native country of Moldova (the Soviet Union at the time). After immigrating to the U.S. as a teenager, he intended to become a medical professional. That changed after he took a few computer science courses at New York University. What changed his career trajectory from a would-be doctor to one of the world's leading engineers? Check out this episode of Wolfed for the full story. In this episode, Fishman joins host Chris Cohen to reflect on: His career journey from The New York Times to Dow Jones. How he overhauled Yahoo Finance's entire infrastructure and what he took away from the experience. The biggest challenge in reimagining the future of today's technologies. The balance between taking risks and delivering business outcomes. Why he adapts his leadership style at each new organization.

For the past three decades, Deerhoof have been one of the most consistently inventive rock bands around. Their seventh album, The Runners Four, remains a fascinating result of a band obsessively recording themselves in their practice space for many months. After Deerhoof first began as a solo harmonica project by Rob Fisk, drummer Greg Saunier joined only one week later. They signed to Kill Rock Stars and soon after Satomi Matsuzaki moved from Tokyo to San Francisco, she became the lead singer. They released their first two albums, and by 1999, Fisk ended up leaving the band, with guitarist John Dieterich joining later that year. Two additional albums followed and after this point, Chris Cohen came on as second guitarist. As a four-piece, they released Apple O' and Milk Man before turning their attention to their seventh album. This time around, they decided to embrace taking their time recording in their practice space, with each band member bringing in songs they had written. The result was the ambitious concept album, The Runners Four, which was eventually released in 2005. In this episode, Satomi Matsuzaki, Greg Saunier, John Dieterich and Chris Cohen, have an honest conversation about what it was like to be a band on the rise in the Bay Area and the pressure they felt to deliver a timeless record. Saunier describes the hours he spent tinkering with the free version of Pro Tools in a windowless practice space and the toll it took on his mental health. Matsuzaki talks about how swapping instruments with Cohen for this album, brought about a different rhythm and freed her up to sing some interesting vocal melodies. Dieterich describes using the then new technology of Line 6 POD amp simulators and how this approach allowed them to record in the practice space setting. Finally, Cohen describes the band members' interpersonal dynamics during this time and how he ended up leaving the band after this record. From self-mythologizing and writing songs about the band, to recording in the hallway, to embracing classic rock, to the intense relatability of Metallica's Some Kind of Monster, to a concept album about secret messages, time capsules and the flood, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Gary and Chris are reviewing the 1-1 draw with Wycombe, a game of two contrasting halves. Were we as bad as the doom-mongers would have you believe in the first half? Were we as good as the happy-clappers want you to think we were in the second? We take nearly 40 minutes to decide. Then it's a look at Chris Cohen's arrival at the club, and were discussing Michael Skubala's post-match transfer comments. We recently finished off graduation season, and speakers at these ceremonies often talk about education as the doorway to better opportunities and experiences. Is this also true in beer? Does a higher beer education deliver on the promise of opportunity and experience? My next guests and I discuss this question and how we're trying to answer it. If you ask me, the models have been proven and the signs are there that better beer education is the path to better experiences and better revenue. This month we're we're a mere decade away from our current time as we ignore the Mayan doomsday prophecies and choose our favourite songs of 2012. We'll also be talking about making country legends cry, Turkish goth music, & Tracey's secret love of krautrock. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Ian's wife Lydia, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them to Colin's wife Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. Helen also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. dear livejournal, are you shy or outgoing? are you introverted or extroverted? a shy extrovert? an outgoing introvert? i thought i knew what i was, but i guess it’s totally situational. large events with lots of people make me anxious, but if i’m organizing it, or have some sort of meaningful role, that totally changes my energy level. i love attention. hand me a microphone and i become a monster. i’ve had a preference for plans and schedules but maybe i can go with the flow? just need to make sure i take breaks and recharge. it’s cool to learn new things about yourself. drink water.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun(intro by omar)DROOL “Sky” DROOL IINADINE “Pews” oh myChris Cohen “Song They Play” Chris CohenRosie Tucker “Beautiful Machine” LowlightBlessed “Thought” SaltCry Babe “Soft Honk” Be CoolPotty Mouth “Liar” SNAFUCasey Chisholm “Slow Down” Try Not to QuitBellows “Judgment” The Rose GardenerNeato fleets “kingsland” gorgonheadCamp Counselor “black crayon” scabsDan Francia “Stereotype” Come Back To LifeZack Benlan “Jenny is a Genie” Jackaroo in the SlewToyota “Atomic” ToyotaVery Crush “Very Possibility” Sleeping SeventeenStrange Passage “No End in Sight” Shouldn’t Be Too LongPreening “Everything Is A T-Shirt” Gang LaughterYeesh “Well Adjusted” Confirmation Bias

Grimalkin is especially annoying this episode, although it's not clear if that's because the kids couldn't predict her reaction to catnip or if it's because she's a little homesick. Launching a new product in the fintech space is a massive undertaking, especially in the ultra-competitive lending space. When Kasasa's Director of Product Management, Greg Schultz and Chris Cohen Executive Vice President of Product were launching the Kasasa Loan it was based on the hunch that borrowers wanted and needed a product they had never seen. In reality, the Kasasa Loan has performed in ways that we barely hoped for, especially in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. It's changing the entire experience of borrowing money and paying it back — helping consumers reduce debt faster and lowering risk of default for institutions. Watch Dan Ariely's TED talk. I spoke to you guys a moment ago about Neill Barham of FiLMiC Pro and how accomplished he is and how much I love all of those apps. And now we are lucky enough to have him on the phone with me. So, Neill, how are you today? I'm doing great. Thank you so much for having me. Before we get too far down the line, I want to thank OWC for sponsoring the podcast. Without them, I wouldn't be able to be talking to you today. So thank you, Larry, and the team over there in OWC. We're grateful to you. Neill, I watched you on stage at the Worldwide Developer Conference, and we won't talk too much about it because I noticed the new version isn't up yet. But we affectionately call that the dub dub. You're on stage at the dub dub talking about a new multi-cam version of FiLMiC Pro. How's that coming? Can you tell us any more about what's happening with that? Sure. And just a quick clarification, I was in the venue and may have been seen, but it's Sean Baker and our CTO Chris Cohen, who got the luxury of being on stage. And Chris is probably the best person to articulate the technical underpinnings of what rolled out with iOS 13 on the iPhone 11 Pros that will make the next generation of FiLMiC Pro possible. So multi-cam is a revolutionary capability. Kevin Buonagurio and I were recently at CES last week, and we had a great time testing out the latest FiLMiC beta with the multi-cam on the trade show floor at CES. I'm jealous. Now I was at CES, why didn't I see this? And it was fantastic because that made a richer presentation and interaction. We would wander from one booth to the next after we shot an interesting clip of the Sony booth where they unveiled, I'm presuming it's an electric car I had seen on maybe...

On today's episode I talk to musician Chris Cohen. Originally from Los Angeles, Chris has been playing in bands since the early 2000s. He played with Deerhoof from Apple O' to The Runners Four, as well as in bands like The Curtains and Cryptacize, as well as on a number of Cass McCombs albums. As a solo artist, Chris has recorded three albums, 2012’s Overgrown Path, 2016’s As If Apart and his latest self-titled album, which was just released at the end of March on Captured Tracks. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter.
There’s a case to be made that some of the most essential members of our craft beer communities aren’t brewers, or writers, or distributors. They’re publicans who influence the industry by connecting people. Chris Cohen is one such person, though he wears many more hats than that of just beer bar founder. He does indeed run a popular bar in Old Devil Moon, which opened in 2016 in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights neighborhood, but he didn’t always know he’d wind up there. He was a former IP lawyer in New York, who by chance got into beer by way of a curiosity about homebrewing. A hobby gave way to a passion, and before long, Cohen moved to the Bay Area, founded the San Francisco Homebrewers Guild, and earned the Advanced Cicerone certification. And then, realizing his meticulous Cicerone test note-taking might be of help to others, he launched Beer Scholar, a site and study guide aimed at helping prospective BJCP and Cicerone students pass their exams. But his most recent effort is a novel one, even for him: He’s an outspoken proponent for the commercial use of Nordic kveik yeast, an ingredient he says will change American craft beer due to its ability to drastically cut down fermentation time. It’s a bold argument, but he’s ready to make the case. This is Chris Cohen of San Francisco’s Old Devil Moon. Listen in.
