Bonjo Iyabinghi Noah is the percussionist and vocalist behind African Head Charge, the experimental dub project he co-founded with legendary studio wizard Adrian Sherwood in the late 1970s. With dozens of albums to his credit, he's been established as an influential and singular performer with a sound all his own. Today I'm speaking with Bonjo about how he found his musical and spiritual calling in the Poco churches of Jamaica in his youth, how an encounter with Fela Kuti changed the course of his life, his collaborations with classic reggae and soul artists like Desmond Dekker, Prince Far I, Creation Rebel and the Foundations, how he turned an experimental studio project into a large live ensemble, and insights into African Head Charge's latest album, A Trip To Bolgatonga on Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound label. Joe Rihn is a DJ, musician and writer with endless enthusiasm for his hometown of Los Angeles. His show Audio Days explores the wide world of electronic music and beyond with particular attention to artists pushing the boundaries of sound. In this special interview episode of Audio Days, influential UK artist Mark Stewart discusses his body of work, his creative processes and the music that has inspired him along the way. After beginning his career as the frontman of Bristol's celebrated post-punk band The Pop Group, Stewart went on to break new ground in electronic music through his work with dub producer and On-U Sound Records head, Adrian Sherwood, along with drummer Keith LeBlanc, bassist Doug Wimbish and guitarist Skip McDonald. Having performed as members of the Sugar Hill Records house band on early hip hop classics including “The Message” by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, LeBlanc, Wimbish and McDonald provided the instrumental foundation for Stewart's 1985 album, “As the Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade,” as well as other projects such as Tackhead and Fats Comet. With his new record “VS.,” which releases April 8, 2022 on Emergency Hearts, Stewart continues in that collaborative spirit. In addition to including names like KK Null, Stephen Mallidner and Mike Watt in its roster of uncompromising artists, VS. features contributions from late musicians Lee “Scratch” Perry and Mika Vainio. Following the hour-long interview segment, this episode features a mix of industrial, synth-wave and left-field cuts from the orbit of Mark Stewart and beyond. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dublab-inconversation/support

The Orb are the biggest ambient act of all time - that's probably true but they were certainly THE ambient band of the 90s, selling enormous amounts of records, touring a live show which drew breathless comparisons to Pink Floyd, arguably inventing the concept of Chill Out, and generally occupying a unique space as a truly experimental group in the mainstream of music. Alex Paterson is the only constant member of The Orb, who last released an album in 2023, and has the scars of litigation to prove it - their 90s catalogue is till being argued over with its owners, Universal, and the lawsuits over uncleared samples have been numerous and acrimonious. So we talk about all that, plus his formative years as an unofficial member of and sometime roadie for The Killing Joke, doing A&R for E.G. Records in the 80s, starting The Orb with KLF legend Jimmy Caughty, DJing at the legendary UFO in Berlin the night the wall came down, and of course his new record with his other project, Sedibus. Some parallels here with the episode we did with Adrian Sherwood... it took a fair bit of work to get this one into shape, but I think it was worth it. Already in 2024 we have seen a slew of amazing Dub tracks being released. This is a continuous mixtape weaving together the classic foundation and the new excitement. Mexican Institute Of Sound's newest single (with Ceci Bastida) release is Stop! It accompanies an amazing album of career retrospective oro. Camilo Lara's music is always perfecto and he is an artist I play more than most on my radio shows. Black Grape are back with a new album Pumpkin Head, and in my opinion it's the best one since Isn't It Great…And this record is great and more. It's filled with slow burning dub sounds that are almost torch song ballads - and the emotional intelligence is more than we could have hoped for from a long term functioning twisted melon. It's bloody fantastic. Also featuring Panda Bear, Sonic Boom, Adrian Sherwood, MU, Kassa Overall, Andrae Murchison, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Manu Chao, LKJ, Dennis Bovell, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, Johnny Clarke, King Tubby, Sly & Robbie and loads more! This show was first broadcast on the 2nd of February, 2024For more info and tracklisting, visit: https://thefaceradio.com/matt-pape-mixtape/Tune into new broadcasts of Matt Pape Mixtape, Friday from 12 - 1 AM EST / 5 - 6 AM GMT.Dig this show? It was a truly great year of music and impossible to put together the best of the year in a 1 hour mixtape. These selections are just some of the songs that resonated most with me. These is no right or wrong, just subjective appreciation of artists with the longevity to rise to legendary status and new upstarts with nothing short of topical ideas and a DIY determination. African Head Charge is a legendary psychedelic dub outfit who have recently returned to their home label On-U Sound with A Trip To Bolgatanga, their first new album in 12 years. As always it finds the peerless Adrian Sherwood at the controls and joins the dots between what the collective has done before and what they are doing now, all with a distinctly Ghanian twist. The signature drums and chants remain at the core of the album of course, as well as plenty of other thrilling new sonic concoctions on keys, guitar, percussion, strings, vocals, kologo and more. It's the latest chapter in a fascinating story that has already seen them release some 16 albums since its inception in 1981. This week's mix is a deep dive into the uniquely melon-twisting sounds of African Head Charge. Sherwood's mastery at the controls means sound is twisted and contorted, dubbed out and reverb-rich from start to finish. Traditional dub sounds melt away into ghoulish vocal passages, unhinged instrumentals come and go and the collective's signature sense of dark soul and mystic ritual holds the whole thing together in a spellbinding fashion.

On this week's Talkhouse Podcast we've got two guys who were part of monumentally influential bands in the 2000s, and who continue to make groundbreaking music today: Paul Maroon and Noah Lennox.  Maroon is behind the incredible, instantly recognizable guitar sound of The Walkmen, a band that sort of split up a decade ago but reunited just this year for what has turned into an incredibly jubilant tour. The band is currently in Europe, where they just played a show in Lennox's adopted home country of Portugal, and they'll return for a string of U.S. dates this fall, culminating in a hometown—that'd be New York—show in October. Since the Walkmen split, Maroon has mostly turned his attention to composing classical music and the occasional film score. He put out a really engaging record with the pianist Jenny Lin called 13 Short Piano Pieces, with each of those pieces inspired by and named for a different place Maroon has lived—he currently calls Seville, Spain home. Check out “El Raval” right here, and go to Paulmaroon.co for info on his solo stuff, or thewalkmen.com for tour dates. Maroon released a seven-inch recently that featured singing from his friend Noah Lennox, who's perhaps better known by the name he uses as part of Animal Collective, Panda Bear. Lennox has been part of that massively influential experimental rock band for nearly 25 years, and he's released a ton of great music both with Animal Collective and as a solo artist. His latest release, though, is a collaboration with Pete Kember, also known as Sonic Boom. Kember was a member of Spacemen 3 way back when, and he's also released incredible music as Spectrum and E.A.R. He's also earned his production stripes over the years, producing records for Beach House, MGMT, and… Panda Bear. Last year, Kember and Lennox released a collaborative album they recorded during the pandemic called Reset, and they just followed it with a dub version of the album remixed by Adrian Sherwood called Reset in Dub. Part of the music industry for nearly 50 years, Kevin Metcalfe takes a break from enjoying his recent retirement to join me on this episode of The Paul Weller Fan Podcast.Kevin is an industry legend. A sound mastering engineer with an impressive repertoire of all kinds of artists and all types of musical styles under his belt. This fella has played a key role on hundreds, if not thousands, of singles and album releases over the years including David Bowie, Adele, U2, Queen, ELO, Depeche Mode, Pulp, Simply Red, The Who, Brian Eno, Lee “Scratch” Perry, Mark Stewart, Adrian Sherwood and more…This is one of those episodes where we hear the connections to Paul Weller ( he mastered Illumination, Studio 150, As Is Now and Catch-Flame) but also plenty of tales from a career that started in 1973, as a 20 year old cutting discs with cassettes and 8-track at RCA…He soon moved to Delane Lea / CTS Studios at Wembley ( or The Music Centre as it came to be known) - where they scored the Bond movies and the world's great reggae artists who'd pop in straight off the plane from Jamaica. It was at Utopia Studios from 1979 to 1983 that he really built his reputation as a sound and engineering mastering expert. Kevin worked with Roxy Music, Duran Duran, Ultravox and Japan. As the punk scene took off, Kevin worked with The Clash, Siouxsie Soux and more…Kevin got asked to join Virgin Records in 1982 (which later became part of EMI) and ended up staying for 15 years. He then went on to create his own company Soundmasters UK in 1997, which led to the work with Paul Weller, along with Adele, Damon Albarn, Can, Gary Clail (another personal favourite), Orbital, African Headcharge…We also have a few other PW connections with former podcast guests - Nick Heyward, Kathryn Williams and The Zombies!. This is a re-upload of my conversation with the late great Mark Stewart Rest In Power!         For those who don't know  Mark Stewart is an artist, vocalist, producer and songwriter from Bristol. As a founding member of The Pop Group and as a soloist, Stewart has remained an anarchic and pioneering figure since the punk era, a constant source of discordance amongst the frontiers of post-punk, dub, industrial and electronic music. In a body of work driven by an explosive form of lyricism and inspired by radical politics, protest movements, theory, philosophy, technology, art and poetry, Stewart has fearlessly cultivated a revelatory collision of ideas, ideals and influences throughout an indisputably ground-breaking and seditious career. Empowered by the DIY incentives of punk Stewart initiated The Pop Group in 1977, subsequently producing some of the most original and combative music of both the post-punk and contemporary era. From 1977 until 1980 Stewart led the charge in a group that completely eschewed punk's formalism for something far greater. Producing epiphanic, irrepressible anthems, including She's Beyond Good & Evil and We Are All Prostitutes, both in 1979, as well as masterful, seminal albums including Y in 1979 and For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? in 1980, The Pop Group ignited the revolutionary aesthetic potential of post-punk. The impact of this first incarnation left an immensely significant legacy ultimately leading to the group's reformation in 2010. With 2015's refined return Citizen Zombie and 2016's audacious left-turn Honeymoon On Mars, the group emphatically renewed their relevance, proving as incendiary as ever. Stewart continues to operate as a crucial impetus in the bands ongoing mission. In 1980 Stewart embarked on his solo career inspired by the sounds he had heard during a visit to New York the same year. The virtuosic scratching and early hip hop propagated by Kiss FM's Kool DJ Red Alert, coupled with the impact of a pile driver at a construction site Stewart happened to encounter there, was enough to encourage his visionary next step. In 1982 Stewart consolidated these encounters into coherent possibilities, forming a group called The Maffia and linking up with producer Adrian Sherwood and his cutting edge label On-U Sound. Alongside a rotating cast of session players, initially comprised of members of African Head Charge, Creation Rebel & Dub Syndicate, and later made up of Doug Wimbish, Keith LeBlanc and Skip McDonald (the erstwhile rhythm section of The Sugarhill Gang) Stewart & The Maffia fashioned an abrasive confection of dub reggae, early hip hop and industrial noise that was shattering, seismic and completely ahead of its time. Headed by an iconic version of William Blake's eponymous ancient poem, Stewart & The Maffia unveiled the Jerusalem EP in 1982, swiftly followed by their cult 1983 LP Learning To Cope With Cowardice. Stewart later moved to Mute Records in 1985 for the ferocious proto-industrial militancy of As The Veneer of Democracy Starts to Fade and successive appearances on the label continued to break untold new ground, from 1987's Mark Stewart to 1990's Metatron and 1995's Control Data. Stewart has continued to plot an utterly uncompromising and individual course into the 2000s, with a streak of solo material that has included Edit, The Politics of Envy, The Exorcism of Envy and Experiments. Preserving his vociferous energy and defiant stance whilst advancing, as always, into unfamiliar territories, this work bears all the traces of Stewart's enduring severity and modernism, an exploratory power reinforced by a host of legendary collaborators and artistic descendants including the likes of Primal Scream, Keith Levene (Public Image Ltd / The Clash), Richard Hell, Kenneth Anger, Daddy G (Massive Attack), Lee ‘Scratch' Perry, The Bug, Kahn (Kahn & Neek, Young Echo) and Factory Floor. Stewart continues to exert an inestimable impact on a disparate range of ensuing artists and scenes. His work has been acknowledged and celebrated as a vital inspiration by the likes of Nick Cave, Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails), James Murphy (LCD Soundsystem), Tricky, Massive Attack, St Vincent and countless others, while his eye for unorthodox extremity has instigated myriad new evolutions, blueprinting industrial, trip-hop, noise-hop, dance-punk and many other subsequent conceptions. Through a staunch, unrelenting desire to confront, deconstruct and make anew, Stewart has become of the most influential and forward-looking luminaries of post-punk, or indeed, any other form of music. An artist often imitated but never bettered. Mark's Info https://www.markstewartmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/markstewartm...

Operating on a relaxed schedule, playing a show by the river, and a collection of scattered tracks. Lucas Fitzsimons (The CUSP, The Molochs) "The CUSP, a change, a prophecy, a realization that what once was will soon be no more. For Los Angeles' Lucas Fitzsimons, The CUSP is not just apropos new solo project but a new creative beginning. Disillusioned and stymied by his former band The Molochs, Fitzsimons felt chewed up and spit out by a vague but all too familiar enemy. From Primavera Sound to pushin' popcorn at a local theatre, lost inspiration and a confused mind became good fodder for change. As Fitzsimons recalls, “It took a while to admit I didn't want to do my old band anymore. I just didn't wanna do it. After nearly a decade with the Molochs, I couldn't imagine starting something new without it seeming like some sort of desperate attempt to stay afloat. It was undeniable, though, and I had, I HAVE, no choice. A little part of me had to die in order for the Cusp to be born. Whatever died made room for something new.” Fitzsimons found new inspiration in the off kilter poetry-like lyrics of Happy Mondays' Shaun Ryder, The DIY philosophy of Nipsey Hussle and Tommy Wright III, the bass heavy dub productions of King Tubby and Adrian Sherwood, and the psyched out rhymes of P-Funk. “I started hearing something different in music… the Dylanesque wordiness was shoved away by bass lines, by groovy drum beats, by sparse (yet eloquent) lyrics. I found a sub bass had more to say to me than heady lyrical verses.”" Excerpt from https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com/track/gum-2 The CUSP: Instagram: @luquilasoda Bandcamp: https://thecuspofficial.bandcamp.com The Vineyard: Instagram: @thevineyardpodcast Website: https://www.thevineyardpodcast.com Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSn17dSz8kST_j_EH00O4MQ/videos

Colin Latter - Flux of Pink Indians - in conversation with David Eastaugh The band formed in Hertfordshire, England in 1980 from the remaining members of The Epileptics (who during the first half of 1979 changed their name to Epi-X, owing to letters of complaint from The British Epilepsy Association) by Colsk Latter (vocals) and Derek Birkett (bass guitar) with guitarists Andy Smith, Neil Puncher, and drummer Sid Ation (who was also a member of Rubella Ballet). The group signed with the Crass Records label in 1981. Their debut EP Neu Smell was released on Crass in 1981; it featured indie hit "Tube Disaster".[1] Flux of Pink Indians continued in 1982 with the album Strive to Survive Causing Least Suffering Possible released on their own label, Spiderleg. They released a second album in 1983, The Fucking Cunts Treat Us Like Pricks; this was banned by many British retailers, and copies were seized by Greater Manchester Police from the Eastern Bloc record shop, which was charged with displaying "Obscene Articles For Publication For Gain". Ation left the group to work full-time with his other band Rubella Ballet, and was soon replaced by Bambi, formerly of Discharge, while Smith was replaced by Simon Middlehurst. However, both departed quickly for their original band, The Insane.[1] While auditioning for their replacements, Puncher also left; the line-up was completed by former Darlex and Epileptics guitarist Kev Hunter, and drummer Martin Wilson. An extensive interview with the band appeared in No Class fanzine. By 1986, the band had shortened their name to Flux; in that year they released their third album, Uncarved Block, which was produced by Adrian Sherwood and featured several members of the On-U Sound Records label.

I spoke to groundbreaking electro-dub duo Ree-Vo.  The duo from Bristol, England, Andy Spaceland and T. Relly  recorded, produced and mixed their debut LP called "All Welcome on Planet Ree-Vo" ( Dell' Orso Records/ SRD) at Bristol's Christchurch Studios, known as the home of the Mezzanine-era of Massive Attack's most commercially successful album. In spring of 2022, Ree-Vo released a limited 7 inch of the "Spacebox" EP with stunning original artwork by American contemporary artist, activist and founder of OBEY clothing line, Shepard Fairey  featuring remixes by Batbirds (the duo of Joe Cassidy AKA Butterfly Child and Aaron Miller) and NOISE (the musical collective of Joe Cassidy , Shepard Fairey, Merritt Lear and John Goff). Ree-Vo also released "Combat" and a powerhouse remix of this track by iconic UK electronic music producer Surgeon (Tresor Records).T. Relly is Bristol hip-hop royalty- known in the community variously for his links to all of the city's major club nights, his passion and support for the most disadvantaged (through his work with the youth and prison leavers), through to compering stages at St. Paul's Carnival and his seminal 2018 album with DJ Rogue "Let Them Know." After leaving art school  (Where Brian Eno was his examiner), Andy Spaceland got involved in bass music upon moving to Bristol, first with Static Sound System and a collaborative 12" with Rudy Tambala (AR Kane) as Sugarboat Vs Sufi, before his band Alpha signed to Massive Attack's Melankolic label, whilst also become their tour DJ. His collaboration range from Smith and Mighty and Horace Andy to Elizabeth Fraser and Madonna, having released music on DJ Die's label Gutterfunk as White Bully. Mark's Info https://www.markstewartmusic.com/ https://www.facebook.com/markstewartmusic

Future Beats Podcast Edition

The British Keyboard Wizard of Acid House | AdamskiAdam was destined for a life in the arts. Influenced by the likes of Malcolm Maclaren and the DIY culture of punk. Adam was making music with his brother on cheap recorders, when others were out playing cowboys and Indians. A firm favourite of John Peel, Adam set his sights on a career in the music industry. Influenced by Acid House, Adamski was born in 1989. Everyone booked him to play at their events, the journey took him around the country. The album Live and Direct featured a series of instrumentals produced at home in his bedsit. Singles such as NRG charted and Adamski appeared on Top of the Pops. This wouldn't be his last appearance on Britain's top music show. Adamski teamed up with Seal for the Number One track Killer. Adamski was the British poster-boy of Acid House who continues to produce music to this very day. Perry was a pioneer in the 1970s development of dub music with his early adoption of remixing and studio effects to create new instrumental or vocal versions of existing reggae tracks. He has worked with and produced for a wide variety of artists, including Bob Marley and the Wailers, Junior Murvin, the Congos, Max Romeo, Adrian Sherwood, the Beastie Boys, Ari Up, and many others. After the demise of the Black Ark in the early 1980s, Perry spent time in England and the United States, performing live and making erratic records with a variety of collaborators. His career took a new path in 1985 when he met Mark Downie (Marcus Downbeat) with whom he worked on the 1986 album "Battle Of Armagideon" for Trojan. It was not until the late 1980s, when he began working with British producers Adrian Sherwood and Neil Fraser (who is better known as Mad Professor), that Perry's career began to get back on solid ground again. Perry also has attributed the recent resurgence of his creative muse to his deciding to quit drinking alcohol and smoking cannabis. In his earlier days, the act of producing for Perry was a frenzied and ritualistic one where he stated that "he blew smoke into the microphone so that the weed would get into the song. Perry stated in an interview that he wanted to see if "it was the smoke making the music or Lee Perry making the music. I found out it was me and that I don't need to smoke

John arrived at this week's Quietus Hour recording with a bag of coffee so high-end it came in a packaging made of two eco-friendly materials. With that in mind, we decided to go for a two coffee show and opened with a pair of appropriately momentous bangers by Sex Swing and Robert Hood's Floorplan. OOOF! As well as more new music by Jenny Hval, Denis Sulta and The Invisible we've got a classic overlooked track by The Units, some Family Atlantica and some Adrian Sherwood, not to mention our usual look at the important music news of the day and The Persuader. Plus, Stone Roses fans - a real treat for you in an exclusive live clip from their recent surprise show in Halifax.
