A sewing community in St. John's has come out in force to support an Australian initiative to reduce waste in landfills and oceans. We hear about how students at Prince of Wales Collegiate are making Boomerang bags.

What's the deal with plastic pollution and how can we further prevent our oceans from becoming plastic soup? We now know the impact of our dependence on plastic has impacts to both marine life and human health and will be unravelling some of the mysteries, questions and innovative solutions of addressing plastic in the ocean in a three part mini-series. Boomerang Bags is a worldwide initiative diverting old fabric from landfills to make reusable shopping bags. In this episode, Fred talks to some of the volunteers involved in Boomerang Bags Kiama: Karen Fowler, Glenys Watson, Anne Greaves, and Robyn Nightingale. 

Please welcome our new National Council member Edd Moore. Edd is a teacher and Eco Coordinator at Damers First School, Dorchester, Dorset. Edd has built up the eco work at Damers over the last 8 years from a blank canvas. Under his leadership, achieved the Eco Schools Green Flag three times in 2016, 2018, 2020, won Eco Schools Primary Eco School of the Year, Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Schools Champion and Jane Goodall Roots and Shoots Best Group in 2019. With the help of volunteers Edd started a school garden from scratch including a bottle greenhouse so children can garden every afternoon planting vegetables which are then used by them to produce meals. The school gained RHS 5* status in 2017. For three years running the school won the Young Enterprise Fiver Challenge with their environmentally friendly products including: Garden Grenades – recycled school paper mixed with wild flower seeds; Spick n Span – a multipurpose cleaning product; Waxtastic No Plastic – an alternative to cling film raising a total of £7500 in the process which was used to fund a nature area with pond and a giant solar powered stopwatch for the playground. Edd has made Damers into one of the top Eco Schools in the country embedding the environment into the school’s curriculum. He started the Plastic Free Dorchester campaign with the Damers children who have made the school single use plastic free and help the town to achieve Surfers Against Sewage Plastic Free Community Status in July 2019. The children and Edd took their “All in” Deposit Return Campaign to Westminster and met Michael Gove and the children appeared on Newsround. They have also inspired the community and people further afield to collect items that normally cannot be recycled at the curb side such as crisp packets, biscuit wrappers toothpaste tubes to raise money for the school’s eco projects and outside area, saving 100s of kg of waste going into land fill. The community has collected so much of this recycling that the local WI now sort and pack it up on a regular basis. They also formed part of the team to make “Boomerang Bags” an idea Edd discovered in Australia where groups make material bags for people to borrow from shops and so reduce the use of plastic bags. Prince Charles launched this initiative in May 2019 in Dorchester, even providing material for some of the bags. A conversation about the huge problem of plastic overflowing in landfill, floating in the oceans, strangling marine life and causing all sorts of trouble was the catalyst for a fantastic initiative that commenced in 2013 and has enthusiastically spread to over 1100 communities worldwide. Jordyn and Tania, co-founders of Boomerang Bags, said the answer to these problems stared them in the face - with one million plastic bags being used every minute, 10.46 million tonnes of fabric waste created each year, and with the willingness and generosity of people from all fabrics of society they decided to do something about the problem. They created a platform that supports the diversion of post-consumer material (waste- in other words) into reusable bags to replace plastic bags and most importantly, start conversations. In this episode we are very pleased to chat with Jordyn De Boer. Jordyn's reverence and curiosity, inspired by a life-long love of nature in all its forms, led her to study the natural environment, and now implements those experiences to support communities to create change, one reusable bag and conversation at a time. Zero waste campaigner Erin Rhoads from Rogue Ginger once famously put 18 months worth of her rubbish into a single glass jar.But Erin hasn’t always had a low waste lifestyle. In fact she says it used to be “fast food, fast living” kind. She’s shared her journey to reducing her impact on the environment through her blog The Rogue Ginger - one habit, one blog post at a time.Today Erin’s a sought-after writer and speaker. She was a consultant on ABCs War on Waste, and shares skills and practical help to hundreds at workshops, talks and forums, and founded Zero Waste Victoria and Plastic Bag Free Victoria.One of the things I love most about Erin is her complete honesty and transparency with the journey that she’s undertaken, and the emphasis on meaningful change. In this episode of An Environment for Change I speak with Ginny, the force behind Boomerang Bags Castlemaine.  She and a group of dedicated volunteers have been following the Boomerang Bags model; sewing and offering upcycled cloth bags to the public of Castlemaine in the hopes of helping us all transition away from plastic bags and towards more sustainable options. 

Boomerang Bags Wellington is a plastic pollution solution for our plastic bag epidemic. And the mayor wants to get these in circulation to reduce the 9000 tonnes of plastic that is being dumped in the city's landfills every year.
