As a former marketer for the likes of Kip&Co, Milligram, Flexicar and wishlist.com.au, Kimberly Palmer has a toolbox of skills that most hosts could only dream of. Having set up Harper's Cottage in 2019, her first short-term rental in the small yet charming hamlet of Malmsbury, about an hours' drive north-west of Melbourne, Kimberly completed an apprenticeship of sorts in hosting, learning the in's and out's of what it took to host a property that not only attracted incredible guest reviews but was also financially sustainable. More recently, Kimberly, her dog Harper and her now partner Darren closed the doors on Harper's Cottage, and have focused their attention on their exciting, newer joint project, The Botanist's Retreat in Castlemaine. A little larger than Harper's Cottage, The Botanist's Retreat has enabled Kimberly to build on her previous experience as a host and a marketer to create a truly unique offering underpinned by creativity, empathy and a desire to leave her guests feeling truly inspired and restored. And with the added bonus of being located in a town with a growing guest demand thanks to its vibrant arts, cultural and food landscape. I had an absolute blast chatting with Kimberly a short while ago and I'm sure you, too, will love this chat today. Irma and Karen chat about the changing shape of the Australian publishing industry as small publishers are bought up by larger publishing houses. Then Karen talks to short-story maestro Cate Kennedy about how she came to be a writer and then a teacher of writing, how writing (and reading) a short story is like plunging deep into a diving pool, how her career took off after having a story published in a 9/11 commemorative edition of the New Yorker, how she wrote a novel because of an offer she couldn't refuse, what makes a character interesting, how judging prizes has changed her writing, how to overcome procrastination and slumps in confidence, and how a mystery person served her a cup of tea in a green room.About CateCate Kennedy is an award-winning short-story writer of two collections, Dark Roots, and also Like a House on Fire, which was shortlisted for the inaugural Stella Prize. Cate has also written poetry, a travel memoir Sing and Don't Cry, and a novel, The World Beneath, which won the People's Choice Award in the NSW Premier's Literary Awards. It's fair to say Episode 017 of The Crafty Pint Podcast is a special one. After all, you can count the number of people who've achieved what this week's guests have achieved on one hand.It was all the way back in 1999 that Paul and Tash Holgate sold the first Holgate beers, long before “craft beer” was a term – it was “boutique beers” and “microbreweries” in those days – and a full decade before the industry's growth really started to go into overdrive. Little Creatures hadn't yet launched, and Mountain Goat were barely two years into their adventure down the road in Melbourne. Now, 25 years on, they occupy rarified territory: marking their quarter-century milestone while still independent, still running the business hands-on, still making plans for the years ahead, and all while producing some of the finest beers of their history to date.We joined Paul and Tash in the bar of the pub in Woodend that has acted as their home since they moved the brewery out of the family home in their first few years of operation. There, they reflected on the early years, when they were raising a very young family at a time when even getting their hands on things as straightforward and essential as ingredients and packaging was a tall order, and when most venues they approached dismissed their beer as homebrew. We hear their take on the rise of the craft beer industry, how they've navigated the changes as it evolved into something well beyond their expectations, the hurdles they've faced and successes they've enjoyed over the past quarter-century, and how they've gone about celebrating their 25 Years of Beers. You couldn't wish to spend time in the company of a more down-to-earth and genuine couple, or to meet two people still so clearly loving what they do, even in the face of the challenges that have arisen in recent years. The chat with Paul and Tash begins at 09:30Prior to that, Will and I discuss two fun stories we published this week: one on a mini-revival for beer in bottles – notably longnecks; the other looking at the reasons behind the rise of hops from New Zealand both here and globally in the past couple of years. We also touch on the news that Australia's first non-alc brewing company, the Indigenous-led Sobah Beverages, is looking to sell its brewery and taproom on the Gold Coast, and the impending opening of two regional breweries in Victoria: the all-new Bendigo Brewing and a new, larger site in Castlemaine for Shedshaker.Relevant links: Back On The Bottle: https://craftypint.com/news/3617/back-on-the-bottle Choice Az! Melbourne's Medically Supervised Injecting Room (MSIR) in North Richmond opened in 2018. This was the result of a years-long grassroots campaign led by the local community, fed up with constant overdoses in the streets. The MSIR operates on principles of harm reduction which simply work and urgently need to be applied throughout the world. The stigma around drug use, and the criminalising of drug users, must end - and that begins with us. In 1955, Frank Sinatra made a historically significant contribution to the destigmatisation of drug use on film in Otto Preminger's The Man with the Golden Arm. In a depiction that is in many ways still radical today, Sinatra's character of Frankie Machine is a regular person who is trying his best to shake off a heroin addiction but is simply failed by a society that does not have the means to support him. A compelling and empathetic performance by Sinatra, and subject matter which openly defied the Production Code of its era, made this a memorable classic for many and contributed to a better world. This week on SUDDENLY, friend of the show Spike Vincent joins us to watch The Man With the Golden Arm, sharing his thoughts and personal experiences. Meanwhile, Rabia has been reading up on the MSIR and reports back on the experience of touring the facility to see what goes on first-hand. As a thematic wild card, we also watched an Australian DVD of the film called A Night at the Cinema with extra footage intended to replicate the experience of seeing this film in 1955 in a cinema in specifically Castlemaine, Victoria - including "God Save the Queen", a newsreel, cartoon, local ads etc - which leads us to compelling footage of the 1955 Maitland floods. Plus, an update on Bobby Long. In this episode I speak with Dougie Elliot from Rock Solid Stone and Landscaping and also Rock Solid Health. Rock Solid Stone and Landscaping is his stonemasonry and landscaping business, while Rock Solid Health is where he's a holistic health coach.Dougie started out in Castlemaine working for the local council in the botanic gardens, among other areas before working for his dad for 4 years learning stonemasonry, and then moving to Geelong with his wife to start working for himself during Covid. His holistic health views are quite eye opening for uneducated folks like myself, and while not everyone will agree with everything he says, one thing that can't be argued is that poor diet is the common denominator to many health issues, both mental and physical. And if there is something he says that you don't agree with, I'd encourage you to listen to the whole episode, as he has some great points to make and great bits of advice. You can follow Dougie on Instagram @_rocksolidhealth and @rocksolidstoneandlandscaping If you're wanting to sign up to be on the mailing list for The Landscaping School, you can find the link here. You can follow along with the projects we're currently working on via our Instagram page@instyle_gardens@thelandscapingpodcastYou can view each episode on our YouTube channel
Last year I interviewed Peter ‘Lucky' Lukaitis a Policeman from Castlemaine, who was involved in a siege at Kangaroo Flat, here in Victoria, where 4 Police were shot (thankfully all survived). There were many heroic efforts on this day which have resulted in a number of bravery awards, not only for Police, but also members of the public who put their own lives at risk to assist Police who had been shot and lay injured, unable to move. After a 19hr stand off, the SOG were deployed and located the gunman, John Wason, deceased in his home after turning his gun on himself. One of the Policeman shot (not once but twice) was Senior Constable Peter Eames, my guest today. Peter was one of the first to arrive at the scene & was attempting to converse with the gunman when he was shot, first in the chest & then in his leg. Miraculously Peter survived, as did the other 4 Police who were subsequently shot. This siege remains the single largest number of Police shot in the one incident in Victoria's history. But on talking to Peter, the siege pales into insignificance (would you believe) compared with the trauma and grief he endured in Egypt on 12th January 2006. Peter was part of a 90 strong contingent of Australians, made up of police and emergency workers and their friends and relatives, who were on a professional and cultural exchange with Egyptian police, organised through the Egyptian Federation of Victoria and organised twice a year since 1990. Peter was on a bus which overturned on a desert road around 45k from Cairo where 6 people died, 2 of those being Peter's B-I-L Mark and nephew Drew. Many more were injured. Peter miraculously survived (again!!) and was taken to Cairo hospital for treatment for broken bones/ribs, cuts and bruises.Welcome Peter and thanks so much for your time Hosted on Acast. For many years there has been a myth among journalists that journalism and content marketing can't coexist. You either have to focus on journalism work or on content marketing, but not on both. But this belief is based on false assumptions and outdated beliefs. And in this week's episode, you'll hear why you can do both very successfully as a freelance writer. And, in fact, why you may actually WANT to focus on both. My guest is Lindy Alexander, an award-winning freelance food, travel, and lifestyle writer and content creator living in the vibrant goldfields town of Castlemaine in central Victoria, Australia. Her work has been published in numerous digital and print publications including Sunday Life, The Age/The Sydney Morning Herald, The Guardian, Travel + Indulgence, Travel + Leisure Southeast Asia, delicious, Good Food, The Saturday Paper, SBS Life, Dumbo Feather, Peppermint, Essential Kids, Essential Baby, Modern Farmer, Jetstar magazine and Homes+. I had Lindy on the show a few years ago, where we discussed . This time, we're directly tackling the age-old myth that content marketing and journalism are incompatible. You'll hear exactly how Lindy has navigated these waters like a champ. How's she maintained solid journalistic standards and ethics throughout. And how you can combine both to create real synergies in your business.

The Producers Podcast visited Holy Goat's Ann-Marie Monda and Carla Meurs in 2021. We sat on the deck at Sutton Grange Farm with their kelpie and a pot of tea, talking about ethics, pathways and - of course - cheese. Like every meeting with these two, it was a conversation with impact, provoking consideration of life choices, connection and commitment. To commemorate, the announcement of Holy Goat's cessation, we re-share this episode. Since 1999, Ann-Marie Monda and Carla Meurs have been nurturing, creating and crafting at Sutton Grange Farm on Dja Dja Wurrung Country near Castlemaine in Victoria.
