The Garbologist Has Your Waste Prescription - Bel Chellingworth is Pursuing Circularity

Today's guest is a really fun one - Bel Chellingworth - none other than the Garbologist - joins to chat all things waste, packaging, circularity, business models, structural change and individual agency.Bel's career to date spans government, corporate and is now Director and Principal Consultant of BC Consulting, continuing to help business and community reduce waste and make circular economy real. Previously she's led the circular economy portfolio for the London School of Economics, The GPT Group, Australia Post, and ALDI Stores AU - always advocating for prevention, reuse and repair to be the first responders to waste issues.Waste is a topic that daunts me. My first few years out of uni were working in and around waste - from compliance driven packaging reporting to staff education on bins to municipal scale biowaste renewable energy projects. It left me pretty scarred, and to be honest it's a problem I am familiar with but not overly involved with or participating in. When I heard the story of Bel and the remarkable feat she has achieved in reducing her own personal waste footprint to essentially zero I was spurred to go and listen to her and the stats and trajectory of basically every product and their waste was overwhelming. I knew I had to get over my own anxieties and avoidance and get Bel on the show. And she doesn't disappoint. I took an absolute tonne from this chat - from the invisible forces of industry power to convoluted regulatory and legislative frameworks that don't serve environmental outcomes, to the ways new types of business are embedding actual circularity into their business models from the get-go as opposed to trying to retrofit existing broken systems and paradigms, and then her own journey and experiences in shifting her own practices. She also appears regularly in the Australian media as an expert 'Garbologist' and has a residency on ABC Radio Nightlife, the program aptly named 'Waste Not, Want Not' fortnightly broadcasting all around the country, demystifying circularity, and making actions for waste prevention clear and accessible for everyone. Bel is an example of personal change and the power of attraction over promotion. How by being the example as a lighthouse she helps inspire and allow others to realise what their potential is and how they can make a valuable contribution to environmental protection and sustainability. I had such a blast chatting to Bel, and she's helped reform me on my own waste system anxieties and avoidance. Events are live and more are coming - follow on Humanitix.Follow on LinkedIn, Substack and Instagram. Today's show is delivered with Altiorem. Bachman, Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia's School of Architecture, discusses his project “Waste Not, What Not.” This project seeks to reduce the amount of materials that go into landfills by transforming them into new designs and building materials. Bachman shares that according to EPA statistics, over 200 million tons of trash end up in U.S. landfills each year. By transforming waste and recycled materials into prototypes and long-lasting functional objects, Bachman hopes that he and his students can show through exploration, thoughtful design, and knowledge sharing that designers and architects can keep more materials out of landfills. Season 18, Episode 21: Brew Session (Orcish Bowmasters) + Flashback (Chrome Host Seedshark) Orcish Bowmasters was flagged early on as one of the top Modern cards from Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-Earth — and, it turns out, one of the most powerful Commander cards to boot. Everyone loved the base stats (a guaranteed 1/1! a free ping! instant speed!) and the potential for so much more. The only problem? No one could actually name a deck where Bowmasters fit. One week after release, questions are beginning to be answered. Is Bowmasters strong enough on rate to slot into fair, low synergy decks? For Rakdos Scam and BG Rock players, the answer seems to be yes. But the ceiling on Bowmasters is much higher, and its baseline strength opens up many further brewing possibilities. Today on Faithless Brewing, cavedan and Manacymbal tumble down the rabbit hole of Bowmaster brews, going deep into the world of Slitherwisp Flash, go-wide strategies with Convoke or Winota, and good old fashioned Sacrifice synergies. But we don't stop there. Down in the icy depths, far beneath the iceberg, more adventurous brews await with forced card draw and “wheel” effects, from Narset + Dark Deal, to Burning Inquiry, and even Waste Not. Many of these strategies have already found success, and there's still so much further to go. Long term, it's unclear whether Bowmasters has Modern legs. But what about their legs? They don't need those. All we know for sure is that meat's back on the menu, and we're here for it. California is leading the United States into the solar panel revolution. And spoilers: it's actually quite boring. Or at least, that's what an OG environmentalist would say.  This episode, Nature N8 walks us through the process of installing solar panels on his parents' roof, in the Californian suburbs. He explains the financial magic of solar, compares it to industrial scale installments, and finds hope in how the once-radical technology has now become ordinary. Today's show is done in collaboration with The Taiwan Take. Taiwan's next referendum will soon vote on activating the nation's fourth nuclear plant, as well as constructing a natural gas plant on an algal reef that's critical for Taiwan's biodiversity. These decisions come as governments around the world are scrambling to meet the demands of the Paris Agreement, and as environmental activists fight for a more sustainable planet.  Green Parties propose an alternative voice in politics to tackle our environmental ruin. All over the world, there are 91 Green Parties that believe in committing our governments to environmental stewardship, through electing green movement leaders into office. In Asia, Taiwan is home to the region's oldest Green Party, which won a National Assembly seat in 1996 - their very first election campaign.  Our guest today is Professor Dafydd Fell, a political scientist at SOAS University of London, and Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies. It is an axe you break down doors with in an emergency. Hope should shove you out the door, because it will take everything you have to steer the future away from endless war, from the annihilation of the earth's treasures and the grinding down of the poor and marginal...
