Mark is an award-winning author, social justice advocate, and retired attorney. He is best known for writing the Zachary Blake Betrayal books. As an attorney, he spent his career trying cases for social justice. Now in retirement, he culled knowledge from those cases and from other social justice issues, and put pen to paper in developing his books. His self-published, 'Betrayal' books, are a series of legal thriller novels. His sixth book in the series, 'Supreme Betrayal' is loosely based on the hearing and appointment of Brent Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a trial attorney, Bello said he witnessed convictions of innocent men who lacked the resources for a strong defense litigator.Zachary Blake, the main protagonist in his books, is based on his own experiences growing up Jewish, and practicing law in and around Detroit. Mark said he created Blake as a young man who was inspired to become a lawyer and pursue justice after listening to his grandfather's survival stories from Auschwitz, chronicled in Bello's novella, L'Dor va Dor (2020).I'm so glad Mark stopped by A Juicy Pear Podcast, to talk about his fascinating experiences, and remarkable life. Renowned professor and feminist icon Anita Hill visited UCSB, speaking on America’s deep-rooted climate of sexual harassment and how to proceed in the wake of the #MeToo movement and Brent Kavanaugh hearings. In her lecture, entitled “From Social Movement to Social Impact: Putting an End to Sexual Harassment,” she talked about speaking truth to power, overarching cultural misogyny, and the importance of trusting survivors. KCSB’s Ashley Rusch has the story.
I flew by the seat of my ass on this one. First up, I go off on Brent Kavanaugh and all the Bret Easton Ellis-y things he did back in his youth. Then, I implore all women to get together and hatch a plan to put a hurtin' on powerful men who are just screwing everything up. Later on, I speak with Yahoo TV critic about the fall TV season and how it's impossible to watch everything that's out there. As for music, I play tunes from Jazmine Sullivan & Bryson Tiller, Telepopmusik featuring Angela McCluskey and Jeremy Jordan. The Sour Hour airs Wednesday nights, 9/8c, on KPFT HD2. With recent events that are happening in the news in the U.S. surrounding the U.S. Supreme court nomination of Brent Kavanaugh and Dr. Christine Blasey Ford coming forward with her story of sexual assault, I knew I needed to have a podcast on the topic of sexual trauma. While I do plan on having an episode where I speak with a friend on the topic of sexual assault, I knew how very important it was to have an expert on to discuss this topic, as well. Because, y’all, I am not an expert in this area, but as many of you know, finding an expert in a given field is something I take very seriously. And that is why I am honored and grateful to be welcoming back to the show, Licensed Marriage and Family and Therapist, Rebecca Bass-Ching. Rebecca is also a Certified EMDR Therapist+Consultant, Trauma Therapist and a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator. Today you’ll hear us speak on the topic of sexual trauma, including: feeling triggered by sexual assault stories in the news, navigating the differencing of opinions to sexual assault, healing and processing from sexual trauma and the all important fact that there is no time limit on healing.Trigger warning: while we go into mostly surface level conversation related to sexual trauma and assault, it’s still a very tender topic. In fact, I let Rebecca really take the reigns in this episode because, as you’ll hear, I am still unpacking and navigating my own feelings too. In this episode you’ll hear: Some reasons why we may be feeling triggered, angered or on edge related to current events about sexual trauma or assault (8 minutes and 29 seconds) How to navigate feedback from people who have different opinions or reactions to sexual assault (14:02) Handling the question and red herring argument, “What if your son was falsely accused of sexual assault?” (21:21) Your memory network and trauma: remembering portions of trauma so very clearly (32:30) Healing from trauma is very inconvenient, plus we touch on residual trauma (34:35) The deep connection between sexism and racism (38:47) http://yourkickasslife.com/252
