Ever found yourself reacting strongly to something, even when it seems like “no big deal”? Or maybe, in a tense moment, you freeze or shut down instead of reacting? If you're a parent of a struggling teen, be it addiction, mental health struggles, suicidal ideation or a different struggle, you've probably felt your own heart skip a beat more times than you can count. Today, I talk with trauma therapist Sarah Allen about why we sometimes overreact (or shut down) in response to certain triggers and how it all comes down to our bodies trying to protect us.Sarah breaks down the idea that trauma doesn't just live in the mind - it lives in the body. Even when our heads know “things are okay,” our nervous systems might still be on high alert, especially if we've been through overwhelming experiences with our kids in the past. It's that part of us that steps in to make sure we don't go through that kind of pain again. But sometimes, this automatic response can show up as a jolt of panic, a wave of anger, or even a complete shutdown. As parents, we're human too. And with the right tools and support, we can navigate our own responses, even when this journey with our kids takes us through some incredibly challenging terrain. In this episode on understanding trauma responses in parents of struggling teens, we explore:Why our bodies sometimes react before our minds even have a chance; How trauma can make it hard to know what's truly safe or dangerous; What over- and under-responses look like as a parent of a struggling teen in treatment or recovery; How to bring self-compassion to the way we show up, even if it's not perfect;Different therapeutic approaches, including tips for finding the right fit for you or your family; And much more!Need support?

I want to hear your thoughts about the show and this episode. Text us here...One of the things that scares me the most is ignorance and the lack of knowledge that can harm us as humans and women. My platform will always be where we have open and honest conversations. I have found that people often choose not to have difficult conversations because they are afraid to disagree. Disagreements are okay. What is essential is to be open and respectful, willing to understand the perspectives and values of others. I want us to stop avoiding the hard. I want us also to understand facts, rise above misinformation fear-mongering, and stand up for the rights of women. In this episode, Jamie Vollmoeller discusses the potential threats posed by Project 2025 to women and explores how recent legislative efforts may restrict access to essential healthcare services. She raises concerns about the targeting of Planned Parenthood, the Hyde Amendment, and defunding women's health organizations. Like a pebble thrown into a pond, childhood emotional neglect can have a ripple effect into adulthood and beyond. In this episode I am joined by Shelley Bradley-Scholey, an accredited trauma therapist. We discuss the often invisible scars of emotional neglect, and provide a roadmap for recognizing and addressing these deep-seated issues. Through our conversation, we delve into generational shifts in understanding emotional neglect and underscore the essential role of self-compassion and practical steps towards healing.Life's inevitable stresses—from work and finances to relationships and personal losses—can further complicate our emotional landscape. His new book, "The Sex Talk You Never Got", was written to help men get past sexual struggle and John Eldredge (Author of Wild at Heart) says this book is "...the most important book on sexuality that you will ever read." As parents, we need to be aware of what happened to us and also how to protect and guide our children. This is an important topic to talk about since 80% of men struggle with lust regularly. -How can we learn how to respond instead of react? -What are some Biblical examples that we might relate to? -Where does our guilt and shame come from and what happens to our nervous system when shame kicks in? Hello beautiful souls! World renowned trauma therapist, Dr. Frank Anderson, worked alongside Bessel van der Kolk (author of The Body Keeps Score) for years, only to find he hadn't worked through his own trauma and that he didn't know how to allow himself to be loved. Today, he talks about how he came home to himself. In To Be Loved, Dr. Frank Anderson shares his confusing experience of growing up an outsider in a typical, midwestern Italian American home that was - at one turn - fiercely loving but at the same time unaccepting, abusive, and rife with secrets. After enduring six years of therapy as a child in the 1970s, he was programmed to be something that he wasn't for decades and became driven to create the perfect life- complete with a family, a successful career and a house with white picket fence in the suburbs- until it all fell apart. It was only then that he realized resilience, forgiveness and facing his trauma were the keys to living an authentic life-and finally knowing what it feels like to be loved. The Heroes and the Female Combatant emerge from their huddle, and turn back toward the center of the arena. The Jester muttered something to himself, and sat down upon the sandy ground. He placed his hands flat on the ground behind him, leaning back to take in the sun. The Female Combatant looked at him confused, then thought better of trying to determine his motives. Looking around the arena, the other groups were ready. Some looked excited to be thrown into the bloody fray, while others nervously hoped they would be able to find a matching tablet discarded by a team that found it useless. The female combatant looked back at her allies and was shocked to see that the Swordsman Hero and Woman had also decided to begin sunning themselves. The Female Combatant felt her heart drop into her stomach. It was an honor to have Sara on the show! PTSD and children—it's a critical topic. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) is increasingly common in our challenging world, and while it's often difficult to recognize PTSD in adults, it can be even more challenging to determine when a child has PTSD. In fact, there was a time when experts believed children couldn't develop PTSD. Fortunately, we now appreciate the obvious truth that children can develop PTSD if they witness or learn of a traumatic event that is terrifying, shocking, or potentially threatening to the life, safety, or physical integrity of themselves or others. As sensitive information is discussed, listener discretion is advised, particularly if children are present. Helpful resources are provided in the show notes. Ladies, how y'all feel? Fellas, y'all alright? SJR says there's great power in emotional awareness, so W.E. begin this episode by dabbling with the feelings wheel. Followed by an intimate conversation with Trauma Therapist, Life Coach, Minister, and New York Times Bestselling Author of “The Garden Within”, Dr. Anita Phillips! Trauma is a word we hear a lot about these days, and if there's one thing we can be guaranteed of, it's that we will all experience big and small traumas during this human life. In this episode, I talk to trauma coach Linsday Poelman about her own journey of healing and understanding trauma. She offers practical ways to start to heal from trauma in your own life. Having navigated her own Betrayal Trauma journey almost nine years ago, Lindsay found herself deeply entrenched in a dual journey of personal healing while supporting her husband through his recovery from non-functioning anxiety, depression, betrayal trauma, and childhood sexual abuse. This profound experience ignited a passionate pursuit of resources and tools for her own support, eventually leading her to leave behind her career in public and derivative accounting to embark on a transformative path as a life coach. With over five years of dedicated work in trauma recovery, Lindsay has not only honed her expertise but also embraced a mission to empower others. Through her Full Trauma-Informed Coaching Certification, she equips individuals with the skills and insights to navigate the complexities of trauma with compassion and effectiveness – and integrate into a new career. Moreover, she spearheads an Advanced Relationship Trauma Certification Program for Coaches, collaboratively created with a Trauma Therapist, aiming to cultivate deep and secure healing spaces for clients grappling with trauma. Lindsay's vision extends beyond individual empowerment; she envisions a world where trauma-informed practices are universally embraced, fostering personal healing and extending vital support to those in need. Currently residing on the French Riviera with her husband and three children, Lindsay finds joy in the warmth of the sun, the vast expanse of the sea, international cuisine, and spending time with people she loves. Her passion for outdoor adventures, her reverence for Mary Magdalene, and her love for travel all reflect her vibrant spirit and zest for life. Lindsay often muses that if given another life, she would relish being a tour guide, reveling in the joy of exploration alongside other people. Y'all know that when I talk about what it means to have an Ideal Practice, I'm talking about building a private practice that is ideal for you. And of course, that's very different from one person to the next. But the one thing that we all have in common, is that we want to make money, good money. And we want to do so in a way that feels good, and is in alignment with who we are. That's exactly what today's guest, Dr. Ajita Robinson, has done. And how she's done it is nothing short of inspiring.Ajita is a Grief and Trauma Therapist, a bestselling author, a TEDx Speaker, and an Income Strategist, along with many other achievements.More than anything, though, she's building a true legacy of mental health care that is impacting lives across the U.S., while still having a life of her own.In this episode, you'll hear about her journey, all the way from trauma survivor to the incredible success of building an 8 figure practice. (!)And the coolest part is that she's doing this in a really unique way that I've not heard much about before: a powerful combination of smart strategic thinking, building the right relationships, and leveraging the power of contracts and grants. My hope is that this will inspire you to think differently as well. But perhaps more than anything, I want you to hear what she did once she realized she was out of alignment with her own values in what had been a really successful career. There's a story there that you're going to love.Isn't it funny how, when you're being called to a certain path, the universe keeps bringing you back to it over and over and over again?
There's no question that sexual sin is something that many struggle with at some point throughout their life. Pornography, premarital sex, extra-marital affairs - they have unfortunately and heart breakingly become too common in our culture and society today. A recent statistic recently projected over 30 million people struggle with problematic sexual behavior, if not addiction - and another stat revealed that over 10 million youth and adolescents regularly view pornography online. Now we understand this is a sensitive topic, but one that needs to be further discussed if we are going to experience freedom from it's bondage in order to expose this darkness into the light. Joining us today to help us develop a better understanding as to this death trap of a cycle related to sexual sin, shame, and addiction is a man who understands its grip and the path to recovery and sobriety. Today's guest is renowned faith-based Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), Certified Partner Trauma Therapist (CPTT), as well as a man who serves on the Executive Advisory Board here for us at the AACC, Jim Cress. In knowing that the internet has really become the “crack cocaine” for sex addiction, as it allows individuals to remain anonymous, as well as being easily accessible and affordable, we need to continually educate, equip, and encourage individuals as to how they can stay alert and fight back from the strongholds of sin. Our prayer is that this episode would help you find and anchor yourself in the hope of Christ as you begin or continue on a path of healing.
