EPISODE 418 - Andrea Heckner - Crime Thriller Books - Secrets in the Heartland SeriesI'm Andrea Heckner, and I am an author of Crime Thriller Books. I live in Wisconsin with my husband, David. We have three grown sons and three grandchildren. Here's my why for writing: I became an avid reader as a teenager and love to lose myself in a great story, but that is not where my story begins. My story begins with a young girl who struggled to learn to read due to having Dyslexia. Thanks to parents, educators and tutors who were dedicated to helping me to become literate, I was able to not only learn to read and write but to find a true passion in literacy. After starting as a Special Education Teacher, I realized how little I knew about teaching others to read and went back to school. Becoming a Reading Specialist and Literacy Coach allowed me to be able to help other children to become readers and writers. Participating in the National Writing Project helped me to not only become a stronger teacher of writing but also to develop my voice as a writer. Thanks for visiting; feel free to get in touch if you have questions about my books, and don't forget to sign up for my newsletter to be one of the first to get updates.Secrets in the Heartland SeriesThis series of Mystery/Thriller fiction books follows Detective Kass Minor and FBI Agent Robert Matthews as they work to solve crimes in and around the Springfield, Missouri, region of the United States.Book 1-The FarmHave you ever wondered how an ordinary person could know and interact with a serial killer and not know it until it was too late? The Farm, book one in The Murder in the Heartland series, centers on the disappearance of Kelsey Learner, a seemingly ordinary midwestern single mom. Parallel to the investigation into Kelsey's disappearance, a pair of serial killers are murdering in the area for what they perceive to be a higher good. Police have yet to connect their victims and, in some cases, even know they are missing. Is Kelsey their latest victim, or is it a coincidence that a serial killer couple is on the loose and Kelsey has vanished?Book 2- Dismantling the FarmFBI Agent Robert Matthews came from a long line of civil servants, but it was his grandfather's love of a 1930s movie about the FBI that had made being an agent Robert's dream. He had visions of car chases, gun fights, and media releases that featured his name. Instead, he got assigned to the Springfield, Missouri field office, where he spent his days doing paperwork, going out on investigative interviews, testifying in court, or practicing firearms use and defensive tactics. When he is assigned to look into the disappearance of a young man as a favor to a friend of the Assistant Director of the FBI, no one could have predicted how big the case would be.Book 3-Remembering the FarmThe third book in the Secrets in the Heartland series brings the reader back to answer some of their lingering questions. When two boys go missing in Springfield, Detective Kass Minor must move fast to try to bring them home safely. Working with a new partner who is no Mitch Leet, she has no idea what this investigation will reveal. Is Kelsey Learner still alive, or did she perish at the hands of the serial killers? Will learning the truth help Claire to move forward in her life?https://andreahecknerauthor.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/

Beirut Station is a novel pulsating with emotional depth and geopolitical intrigue.   Set amidst the 2006 Hezbollah-Israeli conflict in Beirut, Lebanon, the story follows the precarious journey of a Lebanese-American protagonist entangled with the UN, CIA, and Mossad in a mission to eliminate a terrorist threat. Special guest Paul Vidich returns for a third appearance on Spybrary , offering listeners a rare glimpse into his creative process and the inspiration drawn from historical events and legendary spies like Kim Philby.  This episode brims with lively discussions on Vidich's adept portrayal of Annalise a robust female spy lead character who navigates the moral complexities of her clandestine world. We discuss the seamless blending of fact and fiction and Paul Vidich's layered approach to character development. Beirut Station reminding us once again that heroes and villains in spy novels, much like in real life, occupy grey areas of morality. Join us for this enthralling conversation and then connect with your fellow espionage aficionados in our online community to share your thoughts on Paul Vidich's Beirut Station. So what is Beirut Station By Paul Vidich all about, Shane? A stunning new espionage novel by a master of the genre, Beirut Station follows a young female CIA officer whose mission to assassinate a high-level, Hezbollah terrorist reveals a dark truth that puts her life at risk. Lebanon, 2006. The Israel-Hezbollah war is tearing Beirut apart: bombs are raining down, residents are scrambling to evacuate, and the country is on the brink of chaos. In the midst of this turmoil, the CIA and Mossad are targeting a reclusive Hezbollah terrorist, Najib Qassem. Najib is believed to be planning the assassination of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is coming to Beirut in ten days to broker a cease-fire. The spy agencies are running out of time to eliminate the threat. They turn to a young Lebanese-American CIA agent. Analise comes up with the perfect plan: she has befriended Qassem's grandson as his English tutor, and will use this friendship to locate the terrorist and take him out. As the plan is put into action, though, Analise begins to suspect that Mossad has a motive of its own: exploiting the war's chaos to eliminate a generation of Lebanese political leaders. She alerts the agency but their response is for her to drop it. Analise is now the target and there is no one she can trust: not the CIA, not Mossad, and not the Lebanese government. And the one person she might have to trust—a reporter for the New York Times—might not be who he says he is… A tightly-wound international thriller, Beirut Station is Paul Vidich's best novel to date.

Welcome to this new release feature author episode which also has a good dose of the heart of writing. Guest host Mary-Lou Stephens, chats to debut thriller author Jo Dixon about her new release The House of Now and Then. Over ten years ago, Jo moved from suburban Brisbane to rural Tasmania. Since then, she's been wrangling an ever-growing collection of animals, bringing up two sons, and attempting to transform blackberry-infested paddocks into beautiful gardens. Now, she also writes full-time, creating twisty, suspenseful stories that feature flawed characters who've made mistakes, but who turn out to be stronger than they think. Jo has been a dental assistant, an event co-ordinator, a travel agent, and has run an online shop-never really believing her passion for writing could lead to anything. In 2015, while living in Bangkok with her husband and kids, she completed an MA in writing-realising along the way that she had to stop procrastinating and just write (and finish) at least one book. So with the mantra 'if not now, when?' stuck to her computer, she did. The House of Now and Then is her debut novel. She is now working on her second book. Jo writes stories full of imperfect characters dealing with unsettling situations, and making fatal mistakes. There is intrigue and mystery, the moodiness and underlying threat of the wild environment, and provocative twists and turns. Mary-Lou Stephens was is a born and bred Tasmanian. Previously an actor, singer and radio host, she received great reviews for her memoir Sex, Drugs and Meditation (Pan Macmillan, 2013), the true story of how meditation changed her life, saved her job and helped her find a husband. Her debut novel, The Last of the Apple Blossom, was published by HarperCollins (Harlequin HQ) in 2021. Her next novel will be released in February 2024. Mary-Lou has worked and played all over Australia and now she's slow travelling around the world with her husband and a sense of adventure. Today we have a very special episode for all of you. British Police Sergeant Ralph Kern Interviews American Law Enforcement Officers Adam Richardson And Patrick O'Donnell! As mentioned, on today's show, we have two of the most esteemed guests this show has ever had. We're going to chat with Patrick O'Donnell and B Adam Richardson, the founder of the Cops and Writers Facebook group, along with the books of the same name, and B Adam Richardson, creator of the Writer's detective School and The Writers Detective Bureau Podcast and Facebook group. These are the go-to resources that anyone who wants to write a cop thriller should use. Even those of us who are cops trying our hand at writing should view them as an invaluable resource for articulating our real-world experiences to the page. For those who are a little confused about the role reversal here, when chatting during and after my own show, I realized how fascinating a career and life Patrick and Adam have had and how many questions I had for them. And I can't be the only one in the group who feels like that. It would, pun slightly intended, be a crime not to get that out there for you Cops and Writers. First, can I just express the writing community's thanks for the sheer amount of time and effort you gentlemen put in? The work you do is simply amazing. On today's show we discuss:Who are Patrick and Adam?Tell us about your upbringing. When did that first spark an interest in the Police? Why?What was the application and assessment process? What was the training school like? What was day one on the job like? What was the on-the-job training you received?First ‘sporty' incident? How do your forces work in terms of structure/departments? Response, Detectives, Support, Forensics, etc?Your own career path? Most enjoyable period of your career? An experience that illustrates the real-life harshness of being a cop?Bringing it back telling us an amusing story from your career? What equipment are you equipped with?Ranks and responsibilities? How did you get into writing? What do you get out of it?About your books?About your characters?Realistic books / TV shows / Films which people can use as resources?Tropes that are unrepresentative or you simply dislike. You support writers both aspiring and veterans. What made you go down that line?Discussion on mental health within the Police. Thank you so much for everything you two do.Check out Ralph Kern's website!Visit Adam Richardson over at the Writers Detective Bureau website! Enjoy the Cops and Writer's book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. If you have a question for the sarge, hit him up at his email.Join the fun at the Cops and Writers Facebook groupConsider buying me a coffee :-)Support the show

Mark is an award-winning author, social justice advocate, and retired attorney.  He is best known for writing the Zachary Blake Betrayal books. As an attorney, he spent his career trying cases for social justice. Now in retirement, he culled knowledge from those cases and from other social justice issues, and put pen to paper in developing his books.  His self-published, 'Betrayal' books, are a series of legal thriller novels. His sixth book in the series, 'Supreme Betrayal' is loosely based on the hearing and appointment of Brent Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. As a trial attorney, Bello said he witnessed convictions of innocent men who lacked the resources for a strong defense litigator.Zachary Blake, the main protagonist in his books, is based on his own experiences growing up Jewish, and practicing law in and around Detroit.  Mark said he created Blake as a young man who was inspired to become a lawyer and pursue justice after listening to his grandfather's survival stories from Auschwitz, chronicled in Bello's novella, L'Dor va Dor (2020).I'm so glad Mark stopped by A Juicy Pear Podcast, to talk about his fascinating experiences, and remarkable life. Welcome to Hallowe'en '21. If ever a year required us to find the fun in all things grim, dark and depressing then this is the absolute best year since last year. Appropriately for the lead-in to Spooky Season, our guest this week wrote a book all about fear as an attraction. James Han Mattson is the author of Reprieve – a mouthwatering prospect of a novel set in an extreme, full-contact, haunted house escape room. What could go wrong, right?Well, as you'll hear, James' novel is less interested in fake blood and rubber axes than it is in the very real damage caused by prejudice and discrimination. That's what Reprieve has been likened, in yawn-inducing fashion, to Get Out. In fact, it's something much more interesting than just another social horror satire. James and I talk about a whole lot of heavy stuff, from racial fetishization to the psychology behind liking to be afraid. Meanwhile, I repeatedly seize the chance to put my foot in my mouth with some untypically (according to you guys) dumb questions.Happy October. The fun starts here.Enjoy!Reprieve was published October 5th by William Morrow in North American and Bloomsbury in the UK.Support the show on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com.Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.

Oh eck! This week I get very northern and my working class roots come to the fore. It's all my guest's fault. Tina Baker, the author of Call Me Mummy, is an infectious presence. My typical transatlantic restraint falls away and I follow Tina down endless rabbit-holes – her time as a TV presenter, her childhood mishaps, her cats!Thankfully, her book is fantastic, and gives us something to focus on at least a little.Call Me Mummy is a dark psychological tale of stolen children, toxic media, mental illness and class warfare. That's a lot to fit into one book but, as you'll hear, I think Tina pulls it off with aplomb, and delightful black humour. A warning, this episode does feature discussion of infertility and miscarriage. Tina, of course, delivers her own personal experiences with typical good humour, but it is worth mentioning. We also talk about ideals of parenthood, social media trolls, alcoholism, welsh nuns, babies with horns, and the particular British disdain for the middle classEnjoy!Call Me Mummy was published in paperback on 2nd September by ViperOther books mentioned in this episode include:The Last House on Needless Street (2021), by Catriona WardShuggie Bain (2020), by Douglas StuartSupport the show on Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/TalkingScaredPodCome talk books on Twitter @talkscaredpod, on Instagram, or email direct to talkingscaredpod@gmail.com.Download Novellic on Google Play or Apple Store.

"Interview with James Grippando" James returns to Suspense Radio to talk about his latest book "The Big Lie: Book 16 in the Jack Swyteck series" As the Electoral College battle for the White House lands in a Florida courtroom, Miami attorney Jack Swyteck has never felt farther from the truth, fighting for a “faithless elector,” caught between a corrupt president and his manipulative opponent—with each revelation more explosive than the next. The country is reeling. For the sixth time in American history, the winner of the popular vote will not occupy the Oval Office. President Malcolm MacLeod, the Machiavellian incumbent, was spared from impeachment only because his political foes were certain they would oust him at the ballot box. Now, he appears to have secured a second term, thanks to a narrow victory in the Electoral College. His opponent, Florida Senator Evan Stahl, saw his campaign rocked by allegations of an extramarital affair—with another man. Despite the salacious headline-making scandal and the surrounding media frenzy, most Americans chose Stahl to lead the politically polarized nation. But Stahl is refusing to concede. Backed by millions of supporters, he looks to individual members of the Electoral College to cross party lines. Gun lobbyist Charlotte Holmes is one of Floridas twenty-nine electors who is bound by law and by oath to cast her vote for MacLeod, who won Florida by the thinnest of margins. When Charlotte announces that she intends to vote her conscience and throw the Electoral College to Stahl, the president and his Florida machine haul her into court on felony charges—which, for some, isn't nearly punishment enough. Miami attorney Jack Swyteck is going to use every legal maneuver he can to keep his new client free—and alive. MacLeod's hand-picked prosecutor is determined to prove Charlotte is unfit to cast a vote. Dredging through her past, he's looking for skeletons to humiliate and discredit her, while others with far deadlier intentions have begun acting on their threats. As the pressure mounts, Charlotte and Jack must decide how far they'll go to stand their ground in the stand-your-ground state.
