[3:02 – Opening Title & Initial Technical Chaos] Intro Voiceover Human Nature, a journey in search of a peaceful and prosperous society with human nature as a guide. Led by your host Adam Haman. [3:24] Adam Haman Hello. Isn't technology just hilarious? I guess so. [3:29] Tyrone You got big plans for your 200th episode celebration and then all of a sudden nothing works. [3:36] Adam Haman I still don't see it on my YouTube, but if you see it on yours, I believe somebody is seeing it somewhere. [3:42] Tyrone Yes, somebody is seeing it somewhere. Well, I guess it's just going to be you and me. [3:48] Adam Haman This is kind of how the last one was. Well, hey, we made it. Congratulations, sir. Even if nobody's seeing this, I don't know. [4:06] Tyrone We do have a couple of guests waiting in the waiting room. Maybe they know. But first, we allow some of these bozos on to come celebrate with us. Congratulations, sir. It's number 200. I didn't know if we would make it. Cheers, my friend. [4:23] Adam Haman When we started this little project two years ago, can you believe that? [4:29] Tyrone It's crazy. Oh, you're getting dinged. Ding-donged. Well, welcome everybody to the fantastic, fabulous, super califragilistic 200th episode of Human Nature. [4:41] Adam Haman Oh, wait. I can get my sound effects going. Yeah, I don't think we're live, my friend. [4:47] Tyrone Yeah, I don't think we are either. [4:53] Adam Haman Oh, this is just so silly. So Stefan and Mark, if you can hear us, apologies. Adam's a dumb [ __ ] when it comes to technology. [5:07] Tyrone Should we pop these fellas on here and just apologize to him? I mean, it's 12:12. Should we just cancel this whole nonsense? [5:13] Adam Haman No. Stefan Kinsella. [5:19] Stephan Kinsella Hi, Mark. [5:19] Mark Maresca Mark. Hey, guys. What's up? Congratulations, Adam. [5:25] Adam Haman Thank you. Hold it. We might have to redo this whole thing. [5:25] Tyrone Yeah, we're almost certainly going to have to redo this whole thing. I could show you. My YouTube studio thinks that we have a live stream. [5:38] Adam Haman It thinks it's happening. [5:48] Tyrone Oh, yeah. It thinks we've been going for 5 minutes, but nobody else thinks this. [5:57] Adam Haman Well, that's interesting. [5:57] Tyrone Mr. Kinsella, I know we've never met, but nice to meet you virtually, sir. I'm going to kiss your ass here in a second, but I kind of wanted to do it when we're actually going, so just pretend we've never seen each other five minutes prior to this. But I like the hat and the pipe. Very deerstalker. I'll start calling you Watson or something. [6:16] Stephan Kinsella Yeah, that is about the pipe. You look amazing. [6:22] Tyrone Oh, I can't hear you though. Are you muted? Who's muted, my friend? [6:30] Mark Maresca No, nobody's muted, but I can't hear Mark either. Mark, say something. [6:30] Mark Maresca Talking talking. [6:36] Tyrone Okay, Stephan, I can't. You are I can't hear stuff now. [6:43] Adam Haman Well, maybe nothing works. Maybe that's the Streamyard let you pick the mic and Oh, how about now? How about now? [6:51] Stephan Kinsella Yeah. Yeah, you're correct. How about now? My mic was muted. My mic, my Yeti was muted. [6:57] Tyrone I don't see anything on YouTube Studio, Adam, saying anything's going [7:03] Adam Haman Well, mine does. [7:03] Tyrone Really? Where are you? 7 seconds.
Is universal expansion slowing? What is the Bubble Universe Theory? Will we control AI, or will AI control us? In this special Chuck GPT episode of The LIUniverse, we answer questions from the Annual Global Summit in Erie, Pennsylvania where Dr. Charles Liu gave a talk on “2050 - The Future of Humanity.” To help ask those questions, Chuck and co-host Allen Liu welcome Stacey Severn, our Social Media Manager/Community Director; and physics student Eleanor Adams, our first intern. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, suggested by Stacey: the recent discovery of one of the most distant and earliest known galaxies observed, existing just 570 million years after the Big Bang. It's got a supermassive black hole 20 times the mass of ours and was found via gravitational lensing by the Canadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey (CANUCS) using the James Webb Space Telescope. Then it's time for the main event. Eleanor reads the first Erie audience question from William W., age 13, who asks, “In Bubble Universe Theory, is the force splitting universes apart the same force causing the expansion of the universe, also known as dark energy?” Chuck explains Bubble Universe Theory, aka “Eternal Inflation,” and then how dark energy is different than the forces that cause expansion. Next question: “Have you seen the latest research from South Korea stating universal expansion is actually slowing, thus reducing greatly the amount of dark matter? If it's correct, what are the implications?” Chuck explains the current state of research around the issue, starting with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey at the Kitt Peak National Observatory telescope. DESI gave indications of a change in the amount of dark energy being produced; this new study raises questions about how we measure the expansion of the universe using type 1a Supernova. Next question: “What percentage of our global warming does science attribute to man-created activities vs. a natural progression? Even though the world is getting warmer, wouldn't it be worse if the temperature were getting colder?” Chuck looks at the natural progression of the increase of carbon dioxide and compares it with the larger and more rapid increase in CO2 levels since the Industrial Revolution began. As to whether warming or cooling is better, Allen says that while it's a question of magnitude, neither extreme is desirable. Mark M's question is next: “Will we achieve control or effective management of AI, or will it control, or even define, our daily lives? Allen, whose book on AI is coming out soon, says the answer is far from clear cut. He explains that while there are many efforts to ensure we maintain control, there's no guarantee that we'll succeed. Next question from Erie: “How do we prepare our young children to be successful in the Age of AI?” Eleanor talks about how, like social media, you can't stop or avoid AI, but also, like social media, parents can give their children the tools to help them use it. Next: “Many advanced countries have declining populations, while third world countries are gaining population. How do we get tomorrow's scientific leaders from third world education systems?” Chuck says the best way to ensure an ongoing stream of scientific leaders is for advanced countries to continue to welcome immigrants, while Allen points out it is also important to improve the educational systems and opportunities for research in those third world countries. Stacey reminds us about the impact the internet is having on this issue. With time running out, we squeeze in one last question from Erie: “How can the average person influence science policy in a positive direction?” Our consensus answer: people need to participate, speak out, and support others when they do, too. Rev. Dr. Matthew Harrison, president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, takes some time during the Gathering to talk about Christ's life and Christian love for all human life. Bio: The Rev. Dr. Matthew C. Harrison has served as president of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) since 2010. As president, he is the chief ecclesiastical supervisor of the Synod and is responsible for the ministries directed by LCMS International Center staff, including the Office of International Mission and its nearly 150 missionaries serving around the globe. Before becoming president, Harrison served for nine years as executive director of LCMS World Relief and Human Care (2001–2010), which expended over $100 million for mercy efforts done in the clear name of Christ. These efforts included caring for people after 9-11, Katrina and many hurricanes, the great Asia tsunami, the Haiti earthquake, and many other disasters and humanitarian efforts. Harrison also managed relationships with some 120 LCMS Recognized Service Organizations and other inter-Lutheran social ministry organizations, worked in consultation with LCMS partner/sister churches to build capacity during numerous mercy outreach efforts, and managed LCMS pro-life efforts. From 1995 to 2001, Harrison served as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Ind. Prior to that, he served St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Westgate, Iowa (1991–1995). Ordained in 1991, he has served in a number of elected and appointed positions in the LCMS and on various entity boards of directors. Harrison is co-founder and chairman of the board of The International Lutheran Society of Wittenberg (Old Latin School), which hosts some 40 students and church planters from the European Union and beyond who are studying to become ordained pastors. In addition, Harrison chairs the board of the Lutheran Center for Religious Liberty and serves on the executive committee of the International Lutheran Council. Harrison is also active in the prolife movement and frequently speaks at such events. A native of Sioux City, Iowa, Harrison holds a bachelor's degree in religious studies from Morningside University in Sioux City, Iowa. He attended Concordia University, Nebraska, in 1984. He has M.Div. and S.T.M. degrees from Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. Harrison has pursued additional graduate study at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. Furthermore, he has received honorary doctorates from Concordia University Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor, Mich., and Concordia Theological Seminary, Fort Wayne. Since 2010, Harrison has served as assistant pastor of Village Lutheran Church, Ladue, Mo. He has translated and edited five volumes of essays and letters by Lutheran theologian Hermann Sasse (published through Concordia Publishing House [CPH]). He has also revised C.F.W. Walther's The Church and the Office of the Ministry (CPH) and written several other books, including Christ Have Mercy, A Little Book on Joy and At Home in the House of My Fathers. Harrison has been married to Kathy (Schimm) Harrison since 1981, and they have two sons (Matthew M.L. married to Courtney, and Mark M.C. married to Tara). The Harrisons have two grandchildren, Rosie and Shiloh. In his spare time, Harrison enjoys reading, writing, vintage Jeeps, old banjos and books, and — most of all — time with family. Mark M and Arron split the time in this panel meeting on the topic of Deepening Spirituality in Recovery at the Ontario Canada Regional Conference held in March of 2024. AA International Update: All the conference reserved hotels are sold out, over 22,000 people have already registered. Efforts are being made to find additional hotel space, some room is still available in the university dorms (your best deal). I added a hotel zone map to the event listing with a link to a more detailed pdf. At the moment you would be lucky to find a hotel close to the venue for under $600 per night with most well above 1k. Streamed live on Aug 27, 2023 Bishop Mark M. Beckwith was the tenth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark. He currently serves as the Bishop Liaison for Bishops United Against Gun Violence, a network of 100 bishops he co-founded after the Newtown, Ct. killings in 2012. He is also the co-founder of Faith Leaders for Ending Gun Violence, a national ecumenical group of diverse religious leaders. He has been part of the leadership team for Braver Angels, a national movement that seeks to depolarize America. Beckwith's book, "Seeing the Unseen: Beyond Prejudices, Paradigms and Party Lines" (Morehouse Publishing, 2022) offers a way forward from opposing viewpoints. Instead of dismissing those whose views and experiences are different from our own, he argues that we must look directly at them and see the goodness that is inherent in all things. From the language we use to the imperative to understand and include, we have a duty to work through opposition and build community. Bishop Beckwith describes "Seeing the Unseen" this way: “We are trained to think, yet the cultural emphasis on thinking has not be applied to our ability to see . . . We are not as well trained in seeing the world's fullness―pain and joy, compassion and cruelty. We regularly receive glimpses of pain and joy, but they are often presented in such a way as to reinforce our thinking.” To help sustain our work, you can donate here To check out what RLC is up to, please visit us www.redletterchristians.org Follow us on Twitter: @RedLetterXians Instagram: @RedLetterXians Follow Shane on Instagram: @shane.claiborne Twitter: @ShaneClaiborne Common Hymnal information: https://commonhymnal.com/
