Grab a cold drink and pull up a chair for this episode of Hollywood Hangout, where your host Boxman strips down the cinematic classics and cult favorites you love.On this turn, we're stepping straight into the ring with the criminally underrated 1992 sports-drama con movie, Diggstown. No endless pre-show banter or fluff here—we dive right into the dusty streets of Michael Ritchie's favorite fictional boxing town and get to work.As the scenes unfold, Boxman breaks down the heavy hitters, making this film a masterclass in cinematic grift. We talk James Woods at his slickest, peak silver-screen swagger as Gabriel Caine, and the legendary Louis Gossett Jr. as the aging, artifact-shattering fighter "Honey" Roy Palmer. Of course, you can't talk Diggstown without digging into the villainy of Bruce Dern as John Gillon, or spotting early-career appearances from stars like Oliver Platt, Heather Graham, and Jim Caviezel as they pop up on screen.Expect a steady stream of trivia, deep-dive movie facts, and a look at how this fast-paced script holds up today. It's an unscripted, narrative ride through a 90s gem that deserves way more love.So hit play, hang out, and let's talk movies.Check us out every Thursday at 9:30 PM Eastern. This week on Friday Night Frightfest, we're trading pure terror for some classic meta-commentary and a whole lot of "Wazzup!" In anticipation of the Scary Movie reboot coming out this year, we are going back to the duo that started the parody phenomenon. We're comparing the original slasher-skewering Scary Movie (2000) with its supernatural-themed sequel Scary Movie 2 (2001). Grab your popcorn and watch out for the killer—if he isn't too busy getting high! Scary Movie (2000) Directed by Keenen Ivory Wayans, the first Scary Movie took the late-90s horror resurgence and turned it on its head. Primarily lampooning the meta-horror of Scream and the "guilty secret" trope of I Know What You Did Last Summer, the film follows Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris) and her group of deeply dim-witted friends as they are stalked by a masked killer. From the opening Drew Barrymore parody with Carmen Electra to the "Shorty" (Marlon Wayans) stoner gags, it's a relentless barrage of slapstick and gross-out humor that somehow manages to perfectly capture the aesthetic of the films it's making fun of. Scary Movie 2 (2001) The sequel, released just a year later, pivots away from slashers and dives into the world of supernatural and haunted house horror. Taking its main plot from the 1999 remake of The Haunting, the film sees our survivors (joined by new faces like Tori Spelling) invited to "Hell House" by a perverted professor (Tim Curry) for a sleep study. The parodies here are legendary: the Exorcist opening with James Woods, the Poltergeist clown fight, and the infamous "Hanson" (Chris Elliott) and his "strong hand." It's a chaotic, live-action cartoon that pushed the franchise into even weirder, more supernatural territory. Join us as we break down why these films were such massive cultural touchpoints at the turn of the millennium. We'll discuss which parodies hit the mark and which jokes… well, haven't exactly aged like fine wine. Spoilers start around 5:40.

There's something special about early ‘90s boxing movies. They live in that sweet spot between grit and charm—before everything became overly polished, but after the genre had already gone a few rounds with audiences. For Episode 301 of Not A Bomb, we step into the ring with two films that don't always get a title shot: Gladiator (1992) and Diggstown (1992).Here is the tale of the tape: Gladiator (1992)Gladiator comes out swinging with raw, underground energy. It's a coming-of-age story that doesn't pull its punches, following a young fighter caught in a world where every decision feels like going toe-to-toe with disaster. This movie fights in close quarters, dirty, aggressive, and personal. There's no dancing around the ring here. Every hit lands, and you feel it. It's the kind of film that wins on sheer grit… even if it occasionally looks like it forgot the game plan between rounds.Gladiator Rowdy Herrington and stars Cuba Gooding Jr., James Marshall, Robert Loggia, Ossie Davis, and Brain Dennehy.Diggstown (1992)Diggstown, meanwhile, is light on its feet and heavy on charm. It's less about haymakers and more about the long con—built around a bet that feels like the cinematic equivalent of calling your shot before the fight even starts. This film shadowboxes with expectations. It jabs, it dodges, and every now and then it lands a clever uppercut of a twist. It may not hit as hard as Gladiator, but it definitely knows how to score points with the judges (and the audience).Diggstown is directed by Michael Ritchie and stars James Woods, Louis Gossett Jr., Oliver Platt, Heather Graham, Bruce DernWe Want to Hear From YouGot a cinematic flop you want us to tackle?

On the latest episode of A Life In Movies, the movie interview podcast by All The Right Movies, we're talking to legendary actor James Woods. With a career spanning five decades, James has built a reputation as one of cinema's most compelling performers. An actor drawn to morally complex characters and unafraid to inhabit the darkest corners of human nature. A two-time Academy Award nominee with multiple Emmy wins to his name, his filmography reads like a masterclass in intensity.Speaking to us from Los Angeles, James takes us through the key moments that shaped his remarkable career. From his early days studying Political Science at MIT before the pull of acting proved too strong, to his film debut working with the legendary Elia Kazan. We dive deep into five landmark films: David Cronenberg's prophetic body-horror Videodrome, Sergio Leone's epic Once Upon a Time in America opposite Robert De Niro, Oliver Stone's raw and urgent Salvador (which earned him his first Oscar nomination), the action-comedy The Hard Way with Michael J. Fox, and Martin Scorsese's Casino where he brought the slippery Lester Diamond to unforgettable life.James also shares insights into his approach to those morally ambiguous characters that have become his trademark, his acclaimed television work, the compelling story behind his Executive Producer credit on Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and his most recent artistic endeavour in music. A fascinating conversation with one of American cinema's most distinctive talents.Connect with ATRM: To join our fantastic community of film fans, support what we do, access our archive, listen to exclusive episodes, and a whole lot more, become an ATRM patron:Join the ATRM Community We're available on any podcast platform:Listen on Apple PodcastsListen on SpotifyYouTube: Subscribe to our channelWe're across all major social channels too:Twitter: @ATRightMoviesInstagram: @allthe_rightmovies Facebook: Join our movie groupBluesky: @alltherightmovies.comTikTok: @alltherightmoviesWebsite: alltherightmovies.com

This week we're joined by actor, drag queen, and Debbie Harry fanatic, Love Connie, for a look at David Cronenberg's sexy and sadistic meditation on horror, television, and society: Videodrome. The early 1980s saw a revolution in consumer video. Small UHF stations broadcast trashy movies at night to compete with the larger VHF networks. VCRs and cable introduced theatrical films to the home market uncut for broadcast. Canadian media theorist, Marshall McLuhan, had some real deep thoughts on what that would mean for our society and how it would change our consciousness. Cronenberg saw a movie in there and he cast James Woods and Debbie Harry as pawns in a game played by shadowy figures using television signals to physically transform the viewers. Max Renn is an executive for CIVIC-TV, a small UHF station in Toronto, a station that broadcast violent and pornographic content. He's on the lookout for the next sensation that'll broaden his audience and he stumbles on to what appears to be a snuff show called Videodrome. It's nothing but brutality, no plot, no characters, just violence. The deeper he looks into it, the worse his hallucinations become. What's real? What's fantasy? Does it even matter? What is Videodrome doing to him? So far, there have been three arrests of the main organizers of the Minneapolis church protesters, but a judge ruled they couldn't arrest Don Lemon because he's a "journalist". Even without a Don Lemon arrest we all agree with James Woods when he called Lemon, America's Dingleberry. The latest sob and/or horror story the liberal media has been pushing to villainize ICE is the "arrest" of a five-year-old boy, but we break it down and reveal the truth behind this story. Plus, dems say Trump was horrible in Davos, Jack Smith taken to the woodshed, clowns, and we wrap it all up with our weekly Prayer to Our Heavenly Father.

This week, we're wondering how far is too far with 1988's "Cop." We talk about the violent noir thriller starring James Woods as the world's worst detective, and how his over-the-top (and illegal) methods and morally bankrupt character feel too real in 2026. Listen now.

John Carpenter was ready to retire after escape to LA but making this film with James Woods allowed him to enjoy filmmaking again and it's easy to see why. This episode we take a dive into the most 80's feel film released in the 90's... More slop but hey it's detailed. That's nice. 00:25 – Hanukkah, Bondi and a terror attackJoel (Jack the Insider) opens the Christmas‑eve episode by recounting the Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach that turned into a mass‑shooting, with 16 dead including Holocaust survivor Alex Kleitman and 10‑year‑old Matilda. He notes that one gunman, Sajid Akram, was killed and his son Naveed faces 59 charges including 15 murders and a terrorism offence, while funerals proceed under a cloud of grief.02:05 – Anti‑Semitic threats and the rise of Jew hatredThe Jacks detail an anti‑Semitic threat on a Virgin Australia flight from Denpasar to Sydney, where a 19‑year‑old allegedly made violent gestures and threats toward a Jewish passenger. They discuss how contemporary anti‑Semitism in Australia and the West feels broader and deeper than before, increasingly visible on progressive and left‑wing fringes as well as the far right.04:55 – Jenny Leong's “tentacles” remark and Greens politicsJoel quotes NSW Greens MLC Jenny Leong's 2023 comments about the “Jewish lobby” and “Zionist lobby” having “tentacles” infiltrating community groups, likening the rhetoric to classic Nazi tropes in Der Stürmer.Jack notes Leong is part of NSW's hard‑left “watermelon” Greens and argues such language shows how anti‑Jewish narratives have crept into mainstream progressive politics in Australia, the UK and the US.07:25 – Apologies, anti‑Zionism and the limits of definitionsThey note Leong apologised two months later for “poor choice of words” with anti‑Semitic implications, but Joel says the tentacle imagery hung “like a bad smell” over public debate. The Jacks criticise semantic wrangling over definitions of anti‑Semitism and suggest calling much of it what it plainly is: old‑fashioned Jew hatred, often masked as anti‑Zionism.10:25 – Who failed after 7 October? Government responses under fireJack argues federal and state leaders failed from “October 8th on” by not responding strongly enough to anti‑Jewish rhetoric and protests, suggesting Labor tried to balance Jewish concerns against Western Sydney Muslim votes.Joel pushes back, citing Sean Carney's column outlining how Naveed Akram's jihadist associations, ASIO assessments and gun‑licence decisions date back to the Morrison/Dutton era and pre‑Albanese security failures.13:55 – ASIO, gun licensing and unanswered questionsThe Jacks highlight ASIO's prior knowledge of Naveed's extremist links and question how Sajid Akram obtained a semi‑automatic shotgun with only an AB licence when B/C categories are needed for that weapon. They call for frank explanations from ASIO and NSW firearms licensing about assessments, paper trails and whether bureaucratic or resourcing failures allowed Akram to amass an arsenal worth around $30,000.17:55 – Under‑resourced counter‑terror units and a fearful Jewish communityJoel cites a retired AFP counter‑terror investigator who says counter‑terror units are stacked with officers fresh out of the academy instead of seasoned detectives.Jack reflects on three decades of Jewish institutions in Sydney's east needing armed guards, and shares conversations with Jewish friends who now quietly contemplate leaving Australia because they no longer feel safe.20:35 – “Don't bring your old hatreds here”The Jacks trace anti‑Jewish attacks in Sydney back to the 1982 Hakoah Club car bombing and the simultaneous attack on the Israeli consulate, arguing Jewish Australians have lived with this threat for over 40 years. They say successive governments failed to hammer home a core Australian expectation: migrants must not import centuries‑old religious or ethnic hatreds into their new home.23:05 – Segal anti‑Semitism strategy and hate‑speech lawsThey briefly canvass the Gillian Segal anti‑Semitism strategy; Jack dismisses it as “word salad” and window dressing, while Joel notes the government has been slow to act on its recommendations. On hate‑speech laws, Jack argues bans on offensive political opinions tend to drive hatred underground and make it more dangerous, but both agree incitement to violence must remain a prosecutable offence, possibly with updated legislation.26:00 – Policing protests and the limits of crowd controlThe Jacks explain why police sometimes tolerate ugly slogans at protests: wading in for arrests can inflame crowds that already vastly outnumber officers. They stress the need to balance immediate public safety and officer safety with the longer‑term risk that demonstrators feel they can incite hatred with impunity.29:00 – Bondi's stain and its heroesJoel laments that Bondi Beach, an iconic Australian destination, will now always be associated with a massacre, describing a moment of nausea as the death toll climbed on that Sunday night.Jack reminisces about Bondi's 1990s mix of Kiwis, working‑class locals and a relaxed Jewish presence, and fears that openness has been permanently damaged.32:05 – Old‑school cop and a Syrian‑Australian heroThey praise the middle‑aged, tie‑wearing NSW officer who initiated the “beginning of the end” of the attack and commend off‑duty police who rushed to Bondi and threw on uniforms.Joel celebrates North Bondi tobacconist Al Ahmad, a Syrian‑born resident who tackled the gunman with astonishing courage, noting he now seems certain to receive Australian citizenship along with his parents.35:10 – Patrol strength, long guns and local station realitiesThe Jacks relay reports that only three officers were on duty at Bondi police station, which Joel describes as a relatively minor station compared to Rose Bay or Maroubra. They question why frontline police responding to long‑gun threats were not issued rifles of their own and suggest NSW should review access to long arms for first responders in high‑risk scenarios.38:00 – Multiculturalism, old enmities and what really matters nextJack argues that, in an immigrant nation, the most important response is cultural: reinstilling the norm that old tribal feuds must be left behind, not accommodated.Joel agrees this message should be central in citizenship education and public rhetoric, more important than technocratic hate‑speech tweaks or reactive gun‑law posturing.42:05 – National Cabinet, ASIO and the demand for competenceThey criticise the National Cabinet's muted post‑Bondi meeting, which produced little beyond talk, and suggest the Prime Minister's cautious style leaves a leadership vacuum in national crises. The Jacks insist Australians accept that security agencies cannot be omniscient, but say they must be properly resourced, competent and transparent when they make mistakes.45:25 – Around the world: headscarves, condoms, climate and Reddit vs CanberraThe Jacks whip around global headlines: Austria's ban on headscarves for under‑14s, China's 13% tax on condoms and contraceptives to boost fertility, Denmark listing the US as a security risk, and the US government quietly deleting “fossil fuels” as a named cause of climate change from official websites. They note Reddit's legal challenge to Australia's under‑16 social media ban and question whether Reddit is the ideal platform to front that fight given its often unpoliced content.47:35 – Venezuela, the ICC and the limits of international lawVenezuela moves to withdraw from the International Criminal Court as investigations into alleged Maduro‑regime crimes against humanity advance.Jack says the episode encapsulates international law's limits: states happily sign the Rome Statute until it becomes inconvenient, then walk away.48:55 – Ireland rearms and Russia blocks “unfriendly” callsIreland announces a 55 per cent jump in defence spending to protect undersea data cables and deter drones, reflecting its geostrategic importance as a trans‑Atlantic communications hub.Russia, meanwhile, moves to block incoming calls from “unfriendly” states; the Jacks mock the performative toughness and note how easily scammers will route around any such ban.51:15 – Rob Reiner's murder and a towering film legacyThey react with shock to the murder of legendary director Rob Reiner and his wife, allegedly by Reiner's troubled son, whose earlier violence was itself the subject of a film.Jack runs through Reiner's extraordinary run—This Is Spinal Tap, The Princess Bride, Stand By Me, When Harry Met Sally, A Few Good Men—and argues that if you'd made only those, you'd still have had a remarkable career.54:45 – “This one goes to 11” and Trump's gracelessnessThe Jacks recall how Spinal Tap helped invent the mockumentary form and embedded lines like “this one goes to 11” into pop‑culture vocabulary. They condemn Donald Trump's statement calling Reiner “a terrible human being” after his death, with conservative actor James Woods publicly rebuking Trump and praising Reiner's personal kindness despite political differences.57:40 – Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks and comedy royaltyJoel outlines Rob Reiner's upbringing in a house full of comedic giants, with father Carl Reiner and close friend Mel Brooks holding weekly movie nights together well into old age, as captured in Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. They reminisce about Carl and Mel's influence on Jewish humour and lament the passing of a generation of comic geniuses.01:01:05 – EVs, hybrids and a Two Jacks lunch betThe Jacks revisit their running argument over electric vehicles, prompted by Ford CEO Jim Farley's plan to pivot the F‑150 towards hybrids instead of pure EVs.Joel, a hybrid owner, sees hybrids as a transition technology in countries like Australia where fast‑charge infrastructure is patchy; he cites global EV sales rising to roughly 18–20 per cent of new car sales in 2025, with internal‑combustion shares steadily shrinking.01:03:05 – Charging reality vs theory in AustraliaJoel recounts his in‑laws' BMW EV trip from central Victoria to Sydney using free or cheap NRMA/RACV chargers, but notes fast chargers are often the first to break or get switched off by retailers facing high electricity costs. They swap anecdotes about BYD and Chinese Maxus taxis—fast‑improving but sometimes uncomfortable—and admit they can no longer remember the exact terms of their EV lunch wager, though Joel insists Jack owes him.01:06:10 – Worst political year: Trump, Macron, Starmer, Albanese, Li, PutinThe Jacks playfully debate which leader had the worst year—Donald Trump, Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer, Anthony Albanese, Chinese Premier Li or Vladimir Putin. They characterise Albanese as the “Stephen Bradbury” of Australian politics, a cautious survivor whose luck and endurance have mattered as much as brilliance.01:18:40 – Ashes update: England's fragile top orderIn a late segment, they revisit England's Ashes woes: repeated collapses leaving them three‑for‑not‑many and a top three of Crawley, Duckett and Pope exposing the middle order to the new ball.Joel notes England dropped a bowler as a scapegoat while leaving the misfiring batting unchanged, and questions how long they can justify Ollie Pope at three ahead of the more solid Will Jacks.01:21:15 – Hong Kong racing, Kooring Rising and Japanese fanboy jockeysJack describes Hong Kong's International Racing Day—four Group 1s and 80,000 people—and the rise of sprinter Kooring Rising, winner of The Everest and now on a long winning streak. He shares footage from Japan's Nakayama track where every jockey stopped circling and sat still so they could watch Kooring Rising's race on the big screen, a measure of the horse's star power.01:23:00 – Listener mail, Howard's gun laws and the Shooters lobbyJoel reads a note from listener Ray pointing out that 300 legally obtained guns are still attributed to “Howard's gun laws”, reminding listeners gun‑law reform was necessary but later watered down under pressure from the Shooters and Fishers political lobby.01:24:00 – Christmas, loneliness and a surprise lunch guestThe Jacks close with Christmas reflections: acknowledging how joyful and stressful the season can be, especially for those who are lonely or estranged from family.Joel recalls his mother inviting a homeless man to Christmas lunch—an act of charity met with teenage grumbling from him and his brother—and urges listeners to look out for those doing it tough without necessarily going to that extreme.01:25:45 – Holiday plans and the show's return in JanuaryJack outlines Hanukkah parties and family Christmas plans in Hong Kong, while Joel describes a quieter Highlands Christmas with a Boxing Day visit from the grandkids. They thank listeners for their support through 2025, wish everyone a Merry Christmas, and promise to return in the second week of January after a short break.00:25 – Hanukkah, Bondi and a terror attackJoel (Jack the Insider) opens the Christmas‑eve episode by recounting the Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach that turned into a mass‑shooting, with 16 dead including Holocaust survivor Alex Kleitman and 10‑year‑old Matilda. Two weeks after the Memphis City Council rejected MFD's two percent pay increase, the council will gather to discuss it again. Normally, that wouldn't be major news. HOWEVER, this is also two weeks after Yolanda Cooper-Sutton said MFD has been "raping the city". Also on the show: Rob Reiner's son Nick Reiner has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder, actor James Woods speaks on those berating Reiner for political beliefs, and we play two rounds of Impossible Trivia Tuesday. Safe home, Rob Reiner. Our favorite Reiner movies. His activism was beyond courageous. Donald's hideous response on Troth Senchul and in the Oval Office. The MAGA backlash against Donald. The replies on Troth Senchul. Nick Fuentes and James Woods condemned Donald's reaction. The major takeaways from the two-part Susie Wiles Vanity Fair piece. Wiles says Trump “has an alcoholic's personality.” The BLS jobs report for November is dismal. Donald confesses prices will never return to 2019. As predicted, the Republicans blocked a floor vote on ACA subsidies. You were warned about the Epstein files, Trump voters. Electricity is 13 percent more expensive since Donald took office. It may be that bad mouthing a beloved American Icon on he day he died is too much for even Trump to overcome. Usually, the public expects cruelty from Trump and his outbursts bring a collective shrug. His nasty words about actor/director Rob Reiner being killed because of Trump Derangement Syndrome seem to have been a bridge too far. Even some MAGA faithful are turning away and finding it hard to defend Trump this time. We will talk about it with Pulitzer Prize winning author and investigative journalist David Cay Johnston. It's Tech Tuesday and Jefferson Graham is back from from Japan and ready to talk gadgets. The Mark Thompson Show 12/16/25Patreon subscribers are the backbone of the show! Noirvember closes with James B. Harris's Cop (1988)—the first time James Ellroy's feverish fiction hit the big screen. Mike teams with Andrew Nette and Rod Lott for a deep read of Harris's adaptation, where James Woods's unhinged Detective Lloyd Hopkins hunts a killer across eighteen years of buried violence. The trio digs into Ellroy's original novel Blood on the Moon and the wilder, abandoned incarnation that came before it—L.A. Death Trip, the unsold, manuscript that first birthed Hopkins. Using material from Ellroy's own accounts and critical studies (including the brute-force early drafts, the rewrites demanded by Otto Penzler and Nat Sobel, and the shift to publishable structure), the conversation maps how a doomed finale turned into a tight serial-killer pursuit. The episode also features a new interview with James B. Harris, who breaks down the challenges of translating Ellroy's structure, keeping Hopkins's mania intact, and staying faithful to the narrative rhythms of the novel. What emerges is a portrait of a filmmaker wrestling with source material born in chaos—reforged into the dark, abrasive thriller that helped spark decades of Ellroy adaptations.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-projection-booth-podcast--5513239/support.Become a supporter of The Projection Booth at http://www.patreon.com/projectionbooth

With the Ashes kicking off this Friday, Sam heads to an undisclosed location near Ormskirk to sit down with a very good friend of the jar — and first-timer on the show — James Woods, to talk about golf's close relationship with the game of cricket. We explore the connections between the two sports, how they have overlapped over time, and the characters who excelled in both.A huge thank you to James for his exceptional research for this episode. The podcast is packed with incredible insights, featuring names familiar to many as well as plenty never celebrated on this podcast before.James' passion for golf trivia can be enjoyed on his social media profile here and, more famously, through his regular picture quiz which he curates for Golf Quarterly, among other contributions. As James rightly points out, Golf Quarterly is a superb investment or gift for any golfer, and we'd highly encourage you to sign up for £35 a year for more of these types of tales. Oscar-Winning legend Martin Scorsese (Killers of the Flower Moon, Taxi Driver, The Departed) directs this epic tale about The Rise and Fall of the Mob in Las Vegas, based on true events. It's the story of how mafia handicapper Sam "Ace" Rothstein (Robert DeNiro) took over the Tangiers casino on The Strip and helped bring it to unprecendented sucess, helped by mafia enforcer Nicky Santoro (Joe Pesci). He falls in love with a local hustler named Ginger McKenna (Sharon Stone) and over time, their relationship deteriorates as does his handle on many crazy things being done by Nicky....and eventually the Mob no longer had power in Las Vegas. Nominated for one Oscar (Sharon Stone, Best Actress), this was initially met with some disappointment upon release as many compared it to Scorsese's similarly themed classic mob epic Goodfellas from five years prior. Over time, its reputation has grown thanks to several memorable scenes and performances - the stacked cast also includes James Woods, Don Rickles, Kevin Pollak, Alan King, and Frank Vincent.Host: Geoff GershonEdited By Ella GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a textSupport the showhttps://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

What happens when journalism isn't about uncovering corruption in boardrooms, but surviving on the front lines of a civil war? Oliver Stone's Salvador (1986) throws James Woods into the chaos of Central America's brutal conflict, where photojournalism becomes both a weapon and a death sentence. The hosts dissect how Salvador critiques America's political interests abroad, captures the moral decay of wartime journalism, and showcases one of Woods' greatest performances.
