Today begins a journey into understanding the real enemies that followers of Jesus face and how to stand firm in the victory Christ has already won. Many of us are quick to identify enemies in our lives—people, circumstances, or even cultural forces—but Scripture reveals that our true adversaries are often unseen and spiritual in nature. Drawing from Paul's letter to the Ephesians, we see that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces of evil. Paul identifies three primary enemies: the world, the devil, and our own sinful nature. Each of these will be explored in depth in the coming weeks, but today the focus is on the devil—our spiritual adversary.The devil is not a myth or a mere symbol of evil; he is a real, created being, a rebellious angel who opposes God and seeks to destroy the good work of God in our lives. He is not God's equal, nor is the outcome of this cosmic battle in question—Jesus has already won the victory through the cross. Yet, the devil is active, prowling like a roaring lion, seeking to devour, to sow chaos where there is order, division where there is unity, and despair where there is joy. His primary strategy is deception—he is the father of lies, and his greatest weapon is to get us to believe things that are not true about God, ourselves, and our circumstances.The devil's mission is to destroy, to steal, and to kill. He cannot dethrone God, so he targets God's children, seeking to undermine our faith, our relationships, and our sense of purpose. His accusations and slander are meant to paralyze us with fear, shame, and doubt. Yet, we are not defenseless. Scripture calls us to be alert, to resist the devil, and to stand firm in the truth. Jesus himself modeled this resistance in the wilderness, countering every temptation with the Word of God. The truth is our weapon, and abiding in God's Word is the path to freedom.We are called to live from a place of victory, not defeat. The enemy has been disarmed and shamed by Christ's triumph on the cross.     Slam the Gavel welcomes Darla Hall to the podcast. Darla Hall came onto the podcast to share the story of her son, Nicholas Hall who was recently sentenced to 21 years in prison in Connecticut. Their nightmare began in 2020 when ALLEGATIONS surfaced just weeks after a custody dispute with his then-wife.      One alleged victim later confirmed nothing ever happened, yet Nicholas Hall was still prosecuted AND from the very beginning, his case has been marked by conflicts of interest, COLLUSION, improper rulings, suppression of evidence and POWERFUL political CONNECTIONS that cast doubt on the FAIRNESS of his trial.    In February 2025, Nicholas Hall was convicted on four of six counts, though not on the most serious of charges. Read more about it here: PROJECT23 Our text today is Mark 14:53-65: And they led Jesus to the high priest. And all the chief priests and the elders and the scribes came together. And Peter had followed him at a distance, right into the courtyard of the high priest. And he was sitting with the guards and warming himself at the fire. Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.'” Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.” And the high priest tore his garments and said, “What further witnesses do we need? You have heard his blasphemy. What is your decision?” And they all condemned him as deserving death. And some began to spit on him and to cover his face and to strike him, saying to him, “Prophesy!” And the guards received him with blows. — Mark 14:53-65 It's hard to stay silent when lies surround you. It's even harder when those lies threaten your reputation, your future, even your life. Yet, before a corrupt court and false witnesses, Jesus stands silent, composed, and strong. The council gathers, determined to condemn him. Witness after witness comes forward, each lying and contradicting one another. In the face of these falsehoods, Jesus remains remarkably silent. His silence is powerful—a profound strength in quiet trust. He doesn't retaliate. He doesn't argue. He doesn't defend himself. But when asked directly about his identity, Jesus speaks clearly and courageously: "I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power." At this statement, the courtroom explodes in outrage. They call it blasphemy. They condemn him to death. They strike him, mock him, and humiliate him. Yet Jesus doesn't shrink back or compromise the truth. He stands firm, even though it costs him dearly. Jesus' strength wasn't in loud self-defense or arguments. His strength was quiet, confident trust in the Father's plan. We often want to defend ourselves and speak up when falsely accused. But there are moments when strength is best expressed in quiet trust. There are times when our strongest testimony is silent faithfulness, confident that God sees and knows the truth. Perhaps you're in a season of unjust criticism, unfair accusations, or even false rumors. You might be tempted to retaliate or to loudly defend yourself. But look to Jesus. Remember, God is your defender. Your strength is in quiet trust and integrity, knowing he sees your truth clearly. Your strongest witness might not be your arguments, but rather your unwavering, Christ-like character in moments of injustice.
