This coming weekend is the Five Points Festival down at the Brooklyn Expo Center in New York City. Last year we missed out on Five Points and didn't realize what we could have had until it was too late. Now that time has passed and we're a bit older and somewhat wiser the Festival is here again and we're not looking to make the same mistake twice. At least Alex isn't. Because in just a matter of days he and our great pal Jon are going to be traveling to the city to take part in the 2nd Five Points Festival so they can see the sights, gawk at some art, and probably spend too much money. In other words they're looking to experience a great convention. In anticipation of the show we were fortunate enough to have a quick chat with two of the people who make it all possible: Sarah Booz and Josh Kimberg. Despite the fact that they have a show literally hours from now, they managed to make some time for a few dummies looking to ask them some questions. Check out the site and if your interested is piqued there's still time to get your behind to NYC. Tune in next week (or maybe the week after?) ...soon. Tune in soon for our recap and follow our so you don't miss out on any snaps from the show. Enjoy! -Jr.

It’s the Bartender Journey Podcast #235. Listen with the audio player on this page, or subscribe in Apple Podcasts, Android or Stitcher Radio. Bar Institute was in NY last week. Lush Life is the organization that puts this on and they do an amazing job. They also produce Camp Runamuck and Cane Camp. Bar Institute is classes, parties, tastings, and networking. The speakers at the Bar Institute classes are all amazing and all volunteer - great people that want to help raise the industry. One amazing class taught by Jackie Summers, Alexandra Farrington and Joanna Carpenter was An Intersectional Guide to Dismantling Systemic Racism and Sexism in Hospitality #YouToo This week on the show we talk with Josh Davis who works with Lush Life in addition to being Bar Manager at The Bureau Bar in Chicago. Book of the Week comes to us from Hazel Alvarado. The Thinking Girl's Guide to Drinking: (Cocktails without Regrets) We are looking for sponsors for the Bartender Journey Podcast. If you know of anyone who might be a good fit, I’d love to hear from you. You can email me directly at brian@bartenderjourney.net. Cocktail of the Week The Vieux Carré is a wonderful cocktail that was invented at the Carousel Bar in the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans around 1938. 1 oz Cognac 1 oz Rye Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth ¼ teaspoon (Bar Spoon) 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters 2 dashes Angostura bitters Its not traditional, but I add a bar spoon of Grand Marnier. It adds just a little extra complexity to the drink. Stir that up and serve it over ice in an Old Fashioned glass. Lemon twist. Even though this drink was originated in a hot place (New Orleans) its actually a great autumn cocktail. Ok let’s talk to Josh Davis and friends on the floor of the Brooklyn Expo Center. Always a pleasure hanging out with Josh. Josh is talking about starting his own podcast…how’s that coming Buddy?! Toast of the Week: "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life."

Michelle Fern reports live from the 2015 Purina Better With Pets Summit in New York City. The third annual summit shines a spotlight on the emotional wellness of pets and the people who love them. How do pets help us be well? How do we help them in return? The day-long summit, which was hosted by Emmy-nominated comedian and writer, Josh Gondelman, took place at the Brooklyn Expo Center in New York City on Nov. 3 and featured three panel discussions that examined the emotional relationship between pets and people, including the reciprocal effects both have on one another. Keynote speeches were presented by Purina senior research nutritionist Arleigh Reynolds, who has researched the dog and human bond for many years in Alaska and supports of The Frank Attla Youth Program; and author and reality television personality Carole Radziwill, who shared how pet ownership has shaped her life experiences.
