The Art of Drinking with Join Jules and Your Favorite Uncle

Just in time for St. Patrick's Day, the Tipperary No. 1 & 2, a cocktail that's more mysterious than a pub crawl through historical footnotes. Was it born from the rolling hills of County Tipperary or marched out of the Irish ranks in World War I? Join us as we stir and stumble through conflicting cocktail recipes. This cocktail represents the final days of the Golden Era of cocktails, where every bartender had a different story and every recipe was a potential act of liquid rebellion. Get ready for a spirited journey that's part mixology, part historical detective work, and entirely intoxicating!    Framework:  Tipperary   Glass: Coupe  Garnish: none  Directions & Ingredients  In mixing glass add:  1.5 oz of Irish Whiskey  1 oz Sweet Vermouth  0.5 oz Green Chartreuse   2 dash Angostura  Stir for 30 rotations  Strain into chilled coupe glass    Tipperary No. 2  No. 2 is unrelated to No. 1, but they both appear in a 1930's cocktail book by Harry Craddock according to Diffords Guide, what do you think? If you make this, let me know what you think. Do you live No. 1 or No. 2?   Glass: Coupe  Garnish: none  Directions & Ingredients  In mixing glass add:  2 oz of Gin, make it an irish gin  1 oz dry Vermouth  ¼ oz fresh orange juice  ¼ oz pomengranate syrup, grenadine  7 mint leaves  Stir for 30 rotations  Strain into chilled coupe glass    BUT there's another No. 2 out there and I think I like this one more  In mixing glass add:  1 1/2 oz. Irish whiskey  1 oz. sweet vermouth  1/4 oz. yellow Chartruese  Stir for 30 rotations  Strain into chilled coupe glass    TIP: No tips, just therapy for William Scott    The Art of Drinking  IG: @theartofdrinkingpodcast     Jules  IG: @join_jules  TikTok: @join_jules   Website: joinjules.com  Learn more about your ad choices. Episode page It's Episode 50 of the Lean Whiskey podcast with Jamie Flinchbaugh and Mark Graban! tl;dr: Lean Whiskey will transition to a new brand Lean Coffee Talk, so stay tuned for more episodes from Mark and Jamie In their 50th and final episode of Lean Whiskey, hosts Mark and Jamie announce a significant transition, revealing that while this marks the end of “Lean Whiskey,” the podcast will continue under a new title called “Lean Coffee Talk.” The change is partially influenced by Jamie's lifestyle choices, which is reflected in their drink selections for this episode – both hosts opt for non-alcoholic spirit alternatives, with Jamie choosing Almave (co-founded by F1 legend Lewis Hamilton). Mark made a non-alcoholic Manhattan (with Bourbon alternative and a Sweet Vermouth substitute), but as he found it undrinkable, we'll spare you the brand name. The bulk of the episode focuses on the current state of the whiskey industry, which is experiencing its first significant downturn since 2002. Drawing from multiple sources, they discuss how the bourbon boom appears to be over, with distilleries facing waning demand and a supply glut. The situation is particularly stark in Kentucky, where 14.3 million barrels are aging at the start of 2024, representing approximately 2 billion bottles of whiskey. The hosts explore how this oversupply mirrors historical patterns, referencing the 1980s when 22 Scotch distilleries closed between 1980 and 1986 and bourbon sales plummeted 50 percent in the US. They also discuss how this situation exemplifies principles from The Beer Game, a famous MIT supply chain management simulation that Jamie has facilitated many times over 20 years (and Mark has played a few times). The episode concludes with details about the podcast's rebranding to “Lean Coffee Talk,” which will maintain the casual, conversational format while using a loose version of the Lean Coffee structure that has been part of many Lean Whiskey episodes. The new format pays homage to both the Lean Coffee methodology and the classic radio program “Car Talk,” with the hosts emphasizing that while the name and logo will change, the podcast will continue in the same feed, ensuring continuity for their listeners. Cheers!  Links From the Show: Jamie's choice, Almave from Lewis Hamilton Bourbon sales a dropping, as reported by the Wall Street Journal and New Wine Review Signs of overheating include bottle buying restrictions A piece on the cyclical nature of the whisky market The Beer Game as featured by the MacNeil Lehrer Newshour in 1989, talked about by Professor Nelson Repenning at MIT, Professor John Sterman's research on order stability in supply chains Podcast feed at LeanWhiskey.com or leanblog.org/leanwhiskey or jflinch.com/leanwhiskey  Please review us and follow or subscribe on your favorite podcast platform!

We are back with more music and whiskey. Today we dive into 3 whiskies and see if celebrity whiskey can be good. badmotivatorbarrels.com/shop/?aff=3 https://www.instagram.com/zsmithwhiskeyandmixology?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw== And today Whiskeydecisions.beehive.com Celebrity liquor brands are a real gray area when it comes to endorsements. As whiskey grows more popular, and more celebrities hop on the bandwagon, it can be hard to distinguish who's just taking a paycheck, and who cares about what you're drinking. But the good news is that increasingly, the big names attached to these bottles really care about the brand and the people who drink it. Breaking Bad stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul, who recently announced their new Dos Hombres mezcal, are just the latest in a series of famous people taking time out of their artistic careers to make artful beverages. What happens when a heavy metal band makes a whiskey? It's certainly not a quiet process. The Blackened American Whiskey is pummeled with low-hertz sound waves from a Metallica-curated playlist. It might sound like a marketing ploy, but distillers insist the sonic-enhancement process drives the whiskey deeper into the wood of the barrel where it picks up extra flavor. As for the tasting notes, expect honey, cinnamon, allspice, and some lingering apricot. New year, new you, right? Okay, by mid-January a bit of the luster has worn off those shiny new resolutions. In fact, National Today says that January 17 is actually the official Ditch New Year's Resolution Day. Still, even if all your grand plans to walk 5 miles a day, save half your paycheck, and subside off nothing but kale, quinoa, and spring water have come to naught, that doesn't mean you can't make some revised resolutions that will be both easier and more fun to follow. Like, how about you simply resolve to try a few new things? This is hardly likely to hurt, particularly if you choose things you already enjoy, such as sampling a few new bourbons. Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey Heaven's Door and retailers across the country selected barrels that vary in age, mashbill, and warehousing locations, in order to select their own Cask Strength Single Barrel Bourbon. This limited release will be hand numbered and adorned with our partners name, offering a distinctive experience. 750 ML, 49.5% ABV (99 PROOF) A blend of 4-5 yr. old straight rye and straight bourbon mashed, fermented, distilled and aged at the Cedar Ridge Distillery. Direct shipping is available in select markets. Unfortunately we do not ship to the states of AK, AL, HI, ID, MI, MS, OK, UT. Mashbill: 51% Corn, 35% Malted Rye, 14% Malted Barley “Think cinnamon, clove, butter and oak. As it hits the palate, it coats it with this goodness, buttery almost, dripping down the side of the cheeks and warms all throughout. There's a comfort here, cornbread-like, with notes of fried apple pie, apricot and macaroon. It finishes medium to long with a hint of bananas foster.” WAIT AND BLEED Ingredients: 2 oz No. 9 Reserve Whiskey 1 oz Sweet Vermouth 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters Equipment: Mixing glass Stirring spoon Strainer Chilled cocktail glass Instructions: Fill a mixing glass with ice cubes. Pour 2 ounces of No. 9 Reserve Whiskey into the mixing glass. Add 1 ounce of Sweet Vermouth to the glass. Add 2 dashes of Angostura Bitters to the mixture. Stir the ingredients gently but thoroughly using a stirring spoon for about 30 seconds to chill and combine them. Place a strainer over a chilled cocktail glass and strain the mixture into the glass. Optionally, garnish with a orange twist or cherry if desired. Sip and savor the bold and balanced flavors of Wait and Bleed. Enjoy responsibly!

In this episode we are going to give you two beverages for the price of one. The only thing you spend to watch one of our shows is your time-which is very precious, we know-and this week you will be getting added value! For quite a while now we have talked about featuring the Negroni, a cocktail consisting of equal parts gin, campari, and sweet vermouth, on one of our shows but for whatever reason it had yet to happen. It occurred to us recently that there is another drink made with two of the same ingredients but it swaps out the gin for whiskey, thereby making it a Boulevardier. Since we already had the gin and whiskey on hand all we had to do was procure some Campari and sweet vermouth, which we did. For this show we will be making a Negroni and a Boulevardier and trying them side-by-side to see how the swapping of the spirit affects the flavor profile. This show was a little different than our standard format yet still went very smoothly and we had a lot of fun. If you watched us live on Twitch on the Thursday night we recorded this then you also got to see us try the Campari and Sweet Vermouth by themselves which was good entertainment in and of itself. As far as the spirits, we used Gray Whale gin in the Negroni and Michter's rye in the Boulevardier. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below or join us live on Thursday nights to give us your feedback while we are live streaming on Twitch. If you have any ideas for future episodes of "Give It A Shot" or just have a question, you can always send us an email to AboutBeverages@gmail.com.
